  • Hi.. other youtube recipes for chana masala add onion but am not seeing on your recipe.. was there a reason why you left it out? Looks delish either way but thought maybe you had a specific reason. Thank you as I really enjoy all your recipes.

  • Your channel is very amazing. Kudos!

  • This is the best chana masala recipe I've found online or anywhere else, for that matter. I can convert it to any number of other delicious Indian dishes, too! Thank you for being awesome and sharing your obviously extensive skills in the kitchen.

  • Can I change Chana to Soya and follow the same procedure for a Soya Masala?

  • @SilkRouteTrader

I have never cooked soya but I think this should work.

  • Mrs Manjula, Thank you so much for sharing these great recipies. I made this food and my family and me really enjoyed it. All the best for you.

  • yummy I love this dish and can't wait to make it!

  • This was very good, thank you! Your instructions were very clear and easy to undertand, thank you!! I really liked the results. :)

  • I like the pan you use. Is it stainless steel? Where did you buy it from? food doesnt even stick a bit.

  • @neetabhandarkar she is using a lot of oil which creates a barrier between the food and the metal. ALL stainless steel pots stick to food unless you apply a lot of grease/oil. teflon-based pans are best for non-stick, easy clean up, which is what i use

  • Another great recipe from Manjula--she's a God send for amateur Indian chefs.

  • Hm Auntie. that look soooo delicoius, I'm gonna cook that right now for my dinner to go with the Paratha awww lol Thx Auntie Manjula...

  • Dear Aunty, Which Garam masala do you use. Can you please show me how to make home made tasty garam masala.

    Thanks,

  • @bharamas1

I make the garam masala I will do a blog for it.

  • tinned chick pea?! why ? is it for speed ..

looks very nice though, thank you.

  • this looks delicious!!! I don't know where to get ingredients :-(

  • @mtorres718 at an Indian market. you can find them in highly populated areas. Or, you could order the ingredients online

  • I want to add mango powder. How much should I use?

  • YOur recipes are the best MAnjula Aunty :) you make it look all so simple, thank you .May god bless you always.

  • you say the oil is on medium-high, but it looks so controlled. i initially have it on medium-low and it becomes dangerous as soon as any liquid touches the oil. it also dries up way too quickly and the spices and cumin seeds start to burn.

  • for the tomato puree, did you just puree one tomato in a blender, or is it canned tomato puree???

  • wonderful recipes and you explain everything so well! i AM SO HAPPY TO SEE RECIPES WITHOUT ONION AND GARLIC! Thank you very much

  • i have a question u usually dont fry onions nd dnt add it in ur food like pakitani dishes we make masala with onions

  • you really are a wonderful cook

  • Thank you for posting this. It was easy to follow, especially with the onscreen ingredients. Can't wait to try it. Thanks again.

  • can i use rice flour instead of gram flour?

  • @Lasantamuerte2010

If you do not have gram flour do without but rice flour will not work.

  • @Manjulaskitchen This looks amazing. I love your videos, you're so warm & informative. I've really gotten into making Indian food lately. Quick questions: when you puree the tomato, do you leave the skins & seeds on, or take them out? Also, do you buy ginger paste or make it? Thanks for all the great recipes

  • @heyidaroo I puree the tomato with skin and seeds

  • @Lasantamuerte2010 You can also make gram flour yourself. You just take your dry chickpeas, wash them, then roast them on the stove for a few minutes. I crushed mine a bit with a mortar and pestle so some of the pieces would split, then put them in my smoothie maker/food processor/blender. Its so easy. First time i ever made it & it came out great!!

  • @MrRudra2010

Gram flour gives the nice texture and thickness to gravy.

  • i don't have hing? Do you really need to put that?

  • i don't have tomato puree what should i put? Can i put blended tomatoes?

  • you make this look so easy! you are really great! thank you for sharing!

  • thanks alot you make amazing food look so easy to make.

I live far away from my parents and just watching you cook the recipes that mom/grandma used to make and being able to do them makes me feel so happy. • dear manjula aunty.i realy like your cooking method in your vidoes.your smile is also very nice .can u tell where r u living now?keep cooking and making vidoes.

  • Anjala can you tell me how to cook rice Please?

  • @ufdtrust check the recipe for plain rice.

  • @ufdtrust - get a rice cooker but if you can't do what I use to do. 2 cups rice to 4 cups of water. Bring the water to a boil, add the rice, stir, cover for 20 min. and you should have delicious rice.

  • My God it was So Easy but I wasn't able to cook it properly for the last 2 yrs. Thank You Lady, i will try know. I am sure it lovely, tasty and Halal. You are a good teacher.

  • Manjulaji, I think u r based abroad. we in India use Kabuli chana and boil them with a tea bag in pressure cooker. In the water, we add crushed Garlic. Reserve the chana in water for half hour so that chana becomes blackish. Rest of the recipe is more or less the same. However we add in tempering ajwain and later ajwain powder as well. To finish, I normally add fried green chillies and a little clarified butter.

  • Woah! The oil! I work in a Chinese restaurant and Indians like their food oily. Its too much for me. I do questions: how come they always want all the ingredients chopped so small? How come they always eat soup? Alot of Indians won't eat eggs either. They like heavy, oily sauces and do not like sweet dishes. Or maybe I'm just dealing with specific Indians? India is a big country.

  • @chowmanfu

I not sure what Indian food you thinking of, but 3 tblspns of oil for a dish to serve 4 is really not that much. Most Western food is oilier.

Chinese use sesame oil also, so not sure what part of India you are thinking of friend :)

  • Manjulaji,do you got the recipe for bread masala with lots of small bread pieces, cashews and onions on it and dipped in gravy, this food is famous in Udupi, but unfortunately I don't know the method of preparing it.I need some help about this.

  • I made this the other day - let me say - THIS IS THE BEST chola without onions ever - thanks so much for teaching all of us to be better cooks. You are a God-send!

  • hey i made this curry yesterday it tastes gd!!! i also decided to make chola palak with the same recipe as this and it also taste good!!! i was jus wondering could you use the same recipe for any non meat curry??

  • can i add a bit of tamarind pulp when the curry is boiling to add that extra sourness (as i don't have aamchor powder)which we hyderabadis like a lot lol..???

  • @zairt

    Tamarind will taste good.

  • Namaste aunty,

I made this according to your recipe and it turned out fantastic. First time I have made Chana without onions and it tasted just as great, if not better.

One question though: would it be possible to use Kashmiri Chili powder instead of the normal Red Chili powder?

  • that looks AMAZING!!!

  • hello i was wondering can i use cummin powder instead of the seeds thank you!

  • if i wanted to use fresh tumeric, how much would i use?

  • Just curious... no onions?

  • Manjula...I love you...thank you so much for sharing these wonderful recipes. Thank you for the step by step guidance.

  • Hi,

Can you please tell me how much chola you took in a Can?

    Thanks

  • dosent taste like original chole recipe

  • hello auntiji, do we need to use besan powder?

  • @nantini15

You dont have to but basen in this recipe gives nice texture and add to the flavor.

  • @Manjulaskitchen acha... thank u, aunty.

  • i've only heard if chole but never learnt how to make it. this seems so easy here. was wondering if besan was necessary. if not, what do you suggest i can use as a substitute. plain flour?thks

  • wow its soo good Manjulaji :)

  • can anyone please giv the infredients for this dish?????please!!1

  • Hey..ur recipe is gr8...and it does taste yummy...I made it exactly the way you told..thanks...alot..thank you..thank you... <3

  • For everyone wondering about the besan, it helps if you make this recipe using dried chickpeas so you can set aside some to grind in a coffee/spice grinder to make your own. The flour cooks in the oil and renders the enzymes in the raw bean digestible and saves you a trip to a specialty grocery store. Just a tip! This is one of my favorite recipes.

  • yeah nice tip ,,i put some dried chick peas in my spice grinder and it broke ,,thanx a bunch i hope you choke on your next meal ya plick

  • hi manjula.i am a big fan of yours and my hubby to ur food....but tell me what happened to ur left hand,it looks like u burnt urself, may Allah keep u safe .keep up the good work

  • Can someone please tell me the purpose of adding besan (gram flour)? Is it to thicken the sauce?

  • hello, nice recipe

but how come you don't add onion or garlic , are they not crucial to the recipe?

  • I think this is the Jain version of Chole....cuz they don't eat onions or garlic.

  • Thank you so much for these wonderful videos and such a wonderful website. Your videos are simple and a great tutorial for Indian cuisine.

  • I made this recipe tonight using half the salt and adding chopped spinach and nutritional yeast. It was great! To go with it, I made brown basmati rice, onion nan and a pot of spiced tea. It was as good as going to an Indian restaurant, only healthier. Thanks for posting it!

  • Namasthe Manjula Jii.......Im Raj living in New York thanks for your wonderful recipe. Appreciate if you can post the South Indian Yogurt Rice or known as "Tayirr Sahtam.

  • It's so weird but I can't eat this without the cilantro. I throw it in at the end and garnish with cilantro..Thanks manjula

  • it will alter the taste greatly

  • Question: it always remains hard the chanay after cooking ... can i add bicarbonate soda to soften them??

  • u can soak it into water for 2-3 hours before cooking to make it more soft.

  • Aunti G thanks :)

and I have no gf :(

  • Looks delicious, I will try this today. Many thanks

  • Hi, Ur recipies are really nice. I never used besan in choley masala instead i used 1 mashed boiled potato to thikan the gravy!!!!

Thanks for really nice recipes. :)

  • hi manjula ji

    ur the best

i love u and ur recipes

    thnx lot

  • Looks yummy! I'll try this out one day ^_^

  • I was hesitant to try this recipe as it did not have any onions.

However, tried it yesterday and it came out extremely well....... Thanks

  • choley without onions and garlic.........really unimaginable very very innovative cooking keep it up :) best of luck

  • Looks very testy

  • I made this today for lunch, and it was fantastic! Thank you for the recipe!

  • Hing is necesary in this recipe? because I not have this....And onion?

  • make without hing.

  • I've read that Hing is used more predominantly in Pulse dishes such as this as it helps to stop flatulence. As far as actual taste - i'm not sure although it does have a distinct smell so it must add something to the taste also. x.

  • Manjula Ji: The recipe was fantastic. I cooked for the first time in ten years today. I made this and a couple of Toor Daals based on your recipes for my wife and son who are returning from India tomorrow. I want to surprise them with my cooking ability. The channa came out really fantastic. I could not find the Besan - so my gravy did not have the thickness it needs, but other than that everything was great. I also added some fresh tomatoes and onions to the recipe. Thanks again.

  • hing smells nowhere like onion-garlic paste, and it certainly does not "stink" i think pungent would be the more apt word.

  • I am a student in .this will help me a great deal

  • First Time i have seen someone adding besan to Chole. How does this help?

  • I think its for colour and a thicker consistency.....I think....

  • Besan (Gram Flour) is for thickening the sauce. Pressing some of the peas also helps in some way to thicken the sauce. It also adds a subtle flavor to the sauce.

  • My mouth is watering just looking at it.

  • This is an incredibly easy recipe! Thanks!

  • hi aunti manjula,

you are soooooooooo sweet, thank you so much for all of ur recipes they are truely helpful, I was world's worst cook, but after watching ur videos i have got a sense of what cooking is about, thank you so much, ithink you should have your own show on sony entertainment TV, infact i will send them a message right now.

  • Manjula! You are awesome! Oh I wish I could come and come for dinner one time!!!

  • Wonderful - so rich and flavorful.

  • Hey this is awesome. Thanks so much!

  • I don't have Besan (chickpea flour) so I'm going to try replacing that with wheat flour. I'm hoping that will be ok since I have all the other ingredients.

  • Namaste Auntijee, Superb Recipe!

    Thanks.

  • Awesome recipe.Your videos are also very homely like your recipes Aunty ji.Can you show us how to cook spicy Bhendi Fry to eat in rotis.

  • This recipe turned out great! Any tips on making it spicier I like extreme spiciness lol?

  • Chile oil.

  • Add one or two more green chile's and some additional red chili pepper. BE REAL careful though, too much spicy food can burn the mouth and lead to diarrhea and even anal fissures. Use discretion.

  • Thanks a lot aunty..will try it

  • aunty ..could you please give receipe for stuffed capsicum?

  • u didn't cook with onions any reason why?

  • Actually I also got tips from some aunties not to use onion for some reason! :S...

  • The hing (asafoetida) replaces the onions and garlic, common in Jain cookery. Plus, no tears!

  • This looks great. The only problem is that my girlfriend doesn't like beans or other legumes.

Are there any other things I can use this sauce with instead of chick peas, beans, etc.?

  • with any vegetable

  • aunty i have been making chole but never tried adding besan before - but it's really good and now i use it all the time in my chole :)

  • Hello Manjula.

My friend and I have cooked Chana Masala at our house but we seem to be lacking some flavour.

We use MDH "Chana Masala" spice mix as a shortcut but apart from tomato, onion, salt and oil we do not add any other spice. There is no real evident spice to our food. Is there something we are missing?

    Thankyou.

  • please folow the recipe for once and then make changes ifyou have to

  • hi manjula ji...m looking for maal pooye...i dont know how to make them...its like a pakora with banana n flour...n i donno whther m wat we call tht in india...pls help by telling me receipe pls...

  • hello y have u used besan n y u havent used any onion to this gravy?how can it taste good without that?explain pls

  • just a different method of cooking try one time and then decide.

  • ok will try it out n let u know how it came out tx for the reply.

  • I always use onions in most of my dishes. I though the same as you before I tried this recipe with besan. I actually really liked the nutty flavor of the besan in the gravy. Great recipe!

  • She is a Jain and thats why dsnt use onion/garlic etc, I believe. I am sure it tastes really good without onion too since we make it without onion during navratra. u can add onions if you want. dependes on one's taste and prefernces..

  • wow, that looks good! I love this dish. thanks for sharing this recipe!
