The people complaining about the number of religious vs the number of atheists in the room are foolish. Since when did numbers of people make an argument stronger or weaker. If Atkins arguments are so strong they should hold up against 100 followers of God.
I facepalm at the comment about explaining love, SO FRICKING WHAT THAT WE CANT EXPLAIN IT. Maybe we never will, but again, so what? That does not mean that we should just jump to the conclusion of god.
Yeah, out of the whole universe. The millions of planetary bodies and countless space in the universe there is only one planet (that we so far know) where life can survive. And on that planet there has been multiple mass extinctions. And thousands upon thousands of species have been left behind. And we're now loosing another species ever couple of days. That doesnt seem like a fine tuned universe to me and certainly no evidence of a higher power. Aside from the power of nature and its laws.
Agnostisism and Atheism are not mutaully exclusive, i for example am an Agnostic Atheist, A/Gnostisism lends itself to knowing and A/Theism to believing.
Atheism is the rejection of a claim made by theists it would not exist if theists did not make the claim they believe a god exists.
That psycologist is an idiot and the scientist should have schooled him on this simple fact.
So his first argument is that the universe is finite, and must have been created by a creator who didn't need a creator. What a joke. Every argument has already been refuted. Creationists love using the staples easy button.
These are ancient debates and will probably go on for a number of years to come. Not sure if anything new is added to this debate by the participants of this debate as compared to before.
'With regards to fine tuning concept,we need imagination.Science is all about imagination!' oh the irony when they redicule the God concept which has more weight than their claims
Good programme. Liked the point about love around the 10-minute mark and the point about agnosticism around the 14-minute mark, although they don't directly answer/address the question posed by the programme 'Is there any evidence for God?'.
Yes, we cannot tolerate your belief in god because for centuries you and your like have been slaughtering anyone who did not buy into your nonsensical superstitions.
Religion has been the basis of science? Are these scientific facts? The virgin birth; resurrection; splitting of the moon; turning a rod into a dragon?
I must thank professor Peter Atkins for standing against such scientific illiteracy.
yes it is fined tuned for the thorny devil, so to is it fined tuned to support cactus plants, snakes, reptiles and whole swot of creatures. Including humans who have inhabited desert land and still inhabit the deserts today. Just google Bedouins, Khoi Khoi or San and i'm sure you will be surprised to find that these people are desert dwellers.
I could comprehensively and immediately refute each of the "arguments" put forward by the army of imbeciles apparently wheeled out to play the part of the audience.
Professor Atkins mumbled and stammered his way through the poorest responses possible as the pack of jackals leapt and tore at him. How diabolical. A very unbalanced broadcast that gives a false picture of the "issue".
A shameful hash. The BBC should issue an apology and redress what was said.
10 speakers for religion vs 1 guy for atheism, nice balance! this type ofTV format is not suitable for discussing any argument put forward with any detail.
Cosmological argument is based on a general relativity view of the big bang which results in singularity, of course we know that GR is not the final word as it does not include Quatum Physiscs Fine tuning is an argument from ignorance, again we don't have a unified theory of physics yet so constants might be just an artifact of our ignorance
goodness gracious... come on Atkins you hand striped your self of your title as Professor by pulling that word LUCK in this discussion ..for me i have to say you crowned your opponent Professor Adam Deen he scored and everyone saw it and heard it ....on this note i have to say sense was made before book ....
adem deen s initial proofs are enough for a normal human being. but Im not sure about anormals..

Ridiculous debate. Every single argument put forth by the theists were either directly refutable or unable to prove the existence of God.

Religion gives answers without question

Is there evidence for God? No

Atkins just seemed puffed up with pride, physically illustrated by the height he can reach with his eyebrows.
This was good work by Adam Deen, it would have been great if the presenter gave him more time to speak.
