It's interesting that you emphasize hope. I guess I'm not the first one to see that the theme of hope, redemption, and damnation is central to McCarthy's novels. This idea of hope and salvation is central to my own analysis of Blood Meridian. I have three videos devoted to the topic.
@DeathNeedsTime Yes, I looked at his (Tommy Lee's character) speech near the end as the redemptive/hopeful piece...but look at McCarthy's other book-to-film project, The Road...and there's a strong "hope, redemption, and damnation" voice in there as well...
lol manny I think that he was saying....Is it justifiable to have hope..... Is it really a realistic possibility that the world rewards the good. One of the two major themes in the movie. He was referring to the theme of chance, and how random and often unfair life is, the other theme being the inevitablility of death.
You know I've seen a couple of Tommy Lee's interviews and he is not that receptive. But with you, he seems to be opening up more. More than the others at least.
Oh no problem...yes, I'm having a blast...seeing great films, interviewing great stars :) I'm truly blessed...and so are you! Have a great week ahead :) Manny
:) it's all about having fun you know? life is too freaking short to get cranky, uptight, specially in the world of youtube :) Thx and have a great weekend! Manny
I was hoping at some point Tommy Lee Jones would just walk out of the interview... Just very unprofessional of someone to act like such a dick to someone as talented as Tommy.
OK, I disagree with you very much about the hope thing. I would say NCFOM has one of the most hopeless endings EVER! Look: Ed Tom has his peaceful place in the desert where nothing happens, than Anton shows up, the pur evil in some way, kills a lot of people, also Lewlyn, which Ed Tom promisted to protect and leaves again, while the Sheriff couldn't do anything, so he resigns. HE FAILED! He is too old to handle the evil, he don't even sees it at any time of the movie. He failed and he knows it.
thanks sooo much...Tommy Lee is supposed to give journalists a hard time...there was a story once, where a blond female journalist walked out of an interview with him...balling her eyes out...so needless to say, I was shaking my hands in the beginning...but...Tommy Lee warmed up...and even gave me a nice compliment at the end :) Thx for watching, and for your good words! Manny
I think Tommy Lee Jones inside there is a sweet and sensitive guy. I just suspect this, and this is why i like him. Good interview too by the way. = )
Ah, that is so adoreable, your hands shaking! Perhaps that is why he went easy on you. :) I like the fact that, knowing what a difficult man he is, you had the courage to contradict him. It challenged him to delve deeper into his thoughts about his characters' feeling, and to come up with a touching final thought. Great job, Manny! :)
Boy has he aged by the way! Does he still have some of his old charisma? Thankfully, his skills have matured also, he has become a sensationally gifted actor. :)
Thx solveig24 :) You know what? He still has his old charisma...but he's got that aura, that you just can't help but shake...like a father figure :) And you're 100% correct...he's grown into a sensible actor, and I love him for that :) Manny
:) Yes, I heard he was a tough interviewee, and he saw my hands shaking in the beginning...but...it all worked out in the end...and I did relish contradicting him :) I have no idea about his liquid lunch...but I interviewed him at high noon, so he must be thinking about it :) Manny
Manny - thank you for the grammar lesson. However, next time you get an opportunity to interview artists of this caliber, though unlikely based upon your performance here, say something insightful rather than relying on your subject's sense of affirmative action. Didn't you pick up on the fact that he thought you were a dullard - flamboyantly gay but nonetheless dim-witted?
Tommy Lee has always been known to detest any interviews like this...it's not because of the journalist's sexual orientation or anything...he's known to give every journalist a hard time...I actually like it when he told me "the question is far more important than the answer." It showed a little love from him....but thx for the insight! Check out my site sometime okay? Manny
I don't think it has to do with your sexual orientation. Your interviews are fun, but I guess I might agree that there might be some deeper questions to ask...Tommy Lee's clearly saying he's not sure whether there's hope or not, and you keep insisting "but there's still hope!" Which is not what I believe the movie is saying either.
Oh you're welcome I'm just a very hopeful person. But here's what I cut out of the interview, the deleted scene if you may., Cormac McCarthy, the author, is known for his religious undertones and what I'm really seeing the movie to be was the father, the son, the holy ghost -- the holy trinity...with Jones (father), Brolin (son), and Bardem (holy ghost)...the religious metaphor is evident in the last monologue about "trumphet" very much like the Revelations? If so, shouldn't there be hope?
I saw that metaphor in your other interview, I don't understand it. Just because there are three characters? The whole meaning of the trinity is redemption and salvation (John 3:16). Clearly no character in this movie is a savior--certainly not Brolin's. There's nothing in the last monologue about a trumpet...
I really like your interviews. I am 6 4, 235, and consider myself a mans man. I find your interviews exact, to the point, and highly intelligent. Who cares about style or all that other stuff. I am carefully interested in the details and the actors perspective. Keep up the excellent work. I look forward to seeing you more often.
I'm reminded of the central theme in Shawshank that gets rised inseveral scenes about the validity of Hope and if it can actually be a dangerous thing. Obviously that movie ends up picking a truly optimistic side, but I think, as this film appears to be arguing, that it might also be a damaging delusion as well.
You guys need to get rid of your pre-conceived notions of hollywood films before you watch this. Not ever film has to end like a perfect story picture.
I agree...the film's narrative structure is not your typical Hollywood three-act film...that's why when I interviewed the cast, I mentioned to them that many people will hate the ending, as much as love it, I do :) Manny
I just went and watched this movie. It sucks. Almost like Big Lebowski in that the last thirty minutes seem like a confusing afterthought slapped together in a huge hurry to finish in time, no matter how intolerable the result.
Yeah, tell you what fer bddc201, right after your sister wipes her chin from your afternoon visit, you may want to contemplate a bit further and cogitate on the fact that you is a inbred mongaloid.
Hm, odd interview. I do not like the fact that the ending received so much criticism! If these people would read the book it would make things a lot clearer. Hell, even a second viewing would.
I'd like to think I know more than just blowjobs LOL...but hey flipflopping...that's what's great about movies...it's objective...and I'm glad that's how "No Country" made you feel...IT'S THE BEST FILM THIS YEAR!!!
i'm not gonna lie, in this interview, Tommy Lee Jones looked like he was gonna tear your friggin head off because you sound really really gay. Just look at 1:20 in this video, he looks he's gonna BEAST on you.
thanks doobooman...but along that 1:20...right around 1:27, he said, "that question is far more important than the answer"...trust me, I've seen Tommy Lee in worst interviews, and he actually gave me love...not because I sound, or act gay...it's really beside the point!
I know some people are confused/miffed about the ending, but I thought it was powerful, poetic, and in keeping with the mood and theme of the movie. On one hand, evil is still out there, but, as Tommy said here, there is a dream of hope in the midst of the cold and darkness.
that's right Ashiman, that's why I asked Tommy Lee about the ending to clarify it. I see the religious implications of it, based on the book by Cormac McCarthy. But you're absolutely right -- powerful, poetic...words used to describe No Country for Old Men! GREAT FLICK! WATCH IT FRIENDO :)
