Hey thanks so much for this! Also after I did my squats today the top left side of my left knee hurt a little when I would bend down or bend my leg. Is this from improper squatting or just from working out???
i agree i was shy first starting squats because know it all's telling me i'm doing it wrong instead of just helping me out. I'd be doing them while people are staring at me and I'm just like seriously, fuck off!
sorry but the purpose of a squat is not to active the lats. Flairing your knees out is just taking the workload off the quads. The #1 purpose of the squat is to build the quad.. Don't want to sound like a hater but it took me years to realize the best way to do squats is not to use tricks to gain 5-10lbs.. squat the right way and make your legs do the work..
@Nate666m3tal you need to make sure that you dont take protein powder and always keep the right form, also eating several small meals a day will keep you from indulging in load of snacks and give your body plenty of energy to grow and build at the same time. No excercise is going to stunt your growth so long as you do it right, but if you damage your lower back you will stunt your growth, so keep your abs tight and maybe wear one of them large belts which the strongmen wear.

Deffinately need to go a LOT lower, you want to transfer the stress to your glutes at the bottom, by going very shallow your putting all the stress on your knees dude
i was always taught to never let your knees go past your toes when squatting. i was taught that you wanna go down so that your legs are 90 degrees, or so that your hams are parallel with the ground, without having you knees go past your toes. this requires me to stick my butt out more and bend more at the hips. is this correct form?
I forgot to add that you must go all the way down to parallel or lower. Otherwise you will not be activating the posterior chain and will risk knee pain.
Yes, believe it or not, but not squatting lower than parallel will cause knee pain or injuries because your knees have a force being applied to them in such a way they are not designed. Lifting is a combination or physics, human nature, and bio-mechanics. But you don't need a degree to understand that ;)
if stunt growth is true, what would mostly cause it? like benching or squating? cause im 14 right now and i think im doing to much on the bench but i always wondered if squating ever stunts ur growth more?
Hey is my workout good for someone starting strength training? It seems small to me but the last 5 is always extremely hard. I lift 3 days a week and do cardio (swimming like 1.5KM) 2 days a week.
1 set of 5X5 deadlifts
1 set of 5X5 squats
Usually around 50 crunches just thrown in.
I increase my weight like every 2 sets. I only do one set a day though, should I do more? I also do light cardio before lifting.
Good job bro, thanks for the info, this is the best video on the net. I just started doing squats again so I need all the tips I can get. Thanks Again
hey ive been squatting for awhile with 10lb plates under my heels for awhile and ppl say thats bad......but the thing is my heels wont stay on the ground! can anyone help me?!?!
Hey ZKB, Don't put any plates under your heels. You might want to consider wearing flat shoes (like Converse, or wrestling shoes) when doing squats. Also, when you come up you may want to point your big toes upward so that the weight of the bar is concentrated on your heels. Look for Mark Rippetoe's training videos. I learned to squat from Rip. Good luck.
jimmy man doing squats do it improve your vertical leap because i play basketball am 6 feet am hoping to be able to dunk by high school am 14 by the way
man i used to hate squatting .. i started squatting 135 i had trouble doing them and my form sucked now my max is 275 just in 4 weeks :D lol now my fav exercise is squatting .. btw i weight 140.. thanks for the tips
Calves are mostly composed of slow twitch fibers. There not meant for size increases. No matter what you do there not going to grow. There not suppose to. You either got them or you don't.
I actually suggest you do plyometrics, do some research on that, trust me if you want more hops plyometrics is what you want. Some good ones are box jumps, jump squats, and wall touches. Theres a bunch more just do some reasearch.
you could also try some cleans, it helps me explode more, it may help you work on jumping. polymetrics are also a great idea like dameety said, you just have to look them up and have a nice open space.
Thanks for that information Jimmy! I never knew that the legs had to flare apart during the squat. I'm 6'8" and finding it hard to build significant muscle. It seems that I have to work twice as hard as the average height person to see any change, not to mention the eating! How do you handle that with your height of 6'6"?

so in short if you train your legs too, you'll grow more muscle in your upper body as well?
LamWeiXing 1 year ago
Yeah everything on this vidio was correct minus his knees....
they should never go that far past your knees, that puts too much pressure and strain on your knees and will cause injurey....
-Booty arch...
-sholders back..
-stick but out far
-be somewhat mosly on your heels
-dont let knees go over toes.
-when going up keep a booty arch(helps to look up as you lift becuse it keeps your back in good form..)

tommytwigs22 2 years ago
For calves I stick with 3-4 exercises of standing and seated calf raises for 6-12 reps. Drop sets work well for calves.
For the outer sweep, increase your front squatting volume.
