I have a question can you actually potty train them, does it work, can they follow it, I'm getting a shih tzu puppy so I'm wondering if any one litter trained their puppy and if it work. Please answer it would be appreciated :)
I have a male Shih Tsu their hair is hard to keep up with. They are stubborn but lovable. Mine is not destructive. I have noticed he does not like to go for car rides, even in his kennel. He cries or barks when you leave for work or to go shopping. He is good and housebroken. I think he likes to have a companion, so we got a dachshund and they get along fine.
I have a Shih Tzu im 10 years old. My grandma gave it to me. Her name is Zoe i think she is 2 years old but she is soooo sooo calm she never barks and all she does is lay. Sometimes she does bark but you really have to get her excited which is kind of hard. Does this mean my dog is very old or is she having a baby or she just calm or she has a disease? And she never licks unless you have food or sauce in your hand or she wants to be pet. Are all shih tzu's like this?

They may be stubborn but they are so attached to their owners that their need to please seems to overcome the stubborn streak. I have one who's very laid back and one who's very playful. They are well behaved but I haven't done much in the way of tricks...the breed is so cute who needs tricks?

They really do! especially the females.They like to be near you, lay on you make you rub their tummy when your hands are close to them. They are so the most adorable dog ever!

I have 4 chih tzu 1 male and 3 females 2 that are 12 week old pups, None ask for the door I used to have the older ones sleep in my room until they started doing their business on my carpet so i had to go and get a crate to put them in at night now they hold it in and in the morning i let them out no more mishaps. But the pups also have a crate and they do it in the crate anyway one of them keeps eating her poo which is grosse! What do i do to make them hold on till am and stop eating poo.
My 16week old shih tzu has the same problem!! she keeps eatting her own poo and licking her own pee. At first we joke about it and like well at least she cleans up after herself, but it gets to a point where she stinks. We ask the vet he said its a nasty habit. He prescribed us something to eat with her food so her poo dont taste good.
Have 19 month shih tzu male, neutered @ 6 mos., 7 weeks when I got him.
Pee pads in every room to start. Took him to pad or same place outside every hour PLUS immediately every time he woke up PLUS within 10 minutes after he ate PLUS within 10 minutes after every playtime. NEVER gave free run of house til he was a year old. When left alone he was ALWAYS in small confined area (portable pen) w/pee pad even outdoors. Not one accident. Since 6 months he barks at door or goes to pad alone.
@cooleyedbabe - thanks for that info, my puppy is 9 weeks old and the person that I bought him from was using a litter box to train him. He goes using that but he makes his pee mistakes every now and then. I don't know how normal the litter box is but for him to be 9 weeks and about 80% trained that is good. I am gonna use your method along with mine, hopefully I will have good results. Did you have them on a schedule?

maybe he doesn't KNOW how to tell you he has to go. every time you are going to take him out say "outside" and before opening the door show him to scratch it. never pick him up to bring him, then he would think that's how he will be taken out.
signs he needs to go is sniffing around and/or circling an area. on a feeding schedule youll get an idea of when he will go, usually 5-30 minute after they eat. a walk after each feeding would be great but if you cannot pull that off then just watch him.
Shih Tzus are notorious for being difficult to house train. You MAY be able to train him or her, but there may still be that 5% of the time when your dog goes in the house. My shih tzu's 6 years old, and by 3, she still peed once in the house at least every week, if not twice a week, despite us having our own yard to let her out in. I suggest settling for a litter box with a doggy pee pad. It worked for us :) Especially if you live in an apartment...

My Shih Tzu will not eat dog food. Ever since the first day we got him. I tried the old "he'll eat when hes hungry enough" thing by just leaving his food out. But he went days without eating! We brought him to the vet, and he said we better feed him something or else! So he eats people food. Over the years we tried to get him on dog food, but it was the same story everytime!

We found a shih tzu on our backyard not too long ago. Little guy was clearly neglected. 18 months old never been groomed in his entire life, never been house broken. So we've got one of those plastic playpens for him where we put him and his litter box when he has an accident. If he uses his litter box or goes outside he gets a treat. We're down to 1-2 accidents a day comparing to the 10 when we first got him. He mostly uses that litter boxthough, which is fine with us.

after reading some the comments i see that it s mostly the same problems i had th e use my house as toilet , it was hard at first but i kept at it after 6 months my dog is trained i would also suggest , buying a few products to help , a rug cleaner(if you carpets), dog repellent spray for peeing, large puppy pads, and a cage for when you go out, so your house does not smell like a kennel, when you go out don't come back till they do the business at least twice they will get the message

its okay it will take time it took my shih tzu about a month or more. try getting a doggy door and it will help. we used to do what you did and now my dog just uses a door and rarely has accidents
Just be consistant and if you catch your Shih Tzu peeing or pooing dont yell but make a sudden noise like saying "no" quickly/sharply as they hate sudden noises. Dont yell as it really doesnt have too much effect on them, and constantly praise them "going" outdoors. Mine took time to walk downstairs and so I kept finding presents upstairs in my hallway, but a little encouragement and practice will help your dog be obedient. I can actually walk my dog with no leash and he will follow tightly.
try not to carry your dog wwhen you can avoid it, they very easily get used to not having a leash on. use a lease that does not choke and dont pull the dog. It really helps if there is another dog that in on a leash as your Shih Tzu can see "how its done"

I have one "Scribbles" which is now 8 months old, the most practical lesson/trick to teach a Shih Tzu is to wait/stay. I put a treat in front of him and wont let him eat it until I give the order, this comes in handy as I live in London and traffic can be hectic so its good to know that he will stay if I command. Also, when we get to a street corner he sits and waits for me to give the order to cross. They are smart dogs but very independant so teaching them early is wise and advised.
I have a shihtzu and he is 7months now . i got him from mah local pet store. and we had him since he was 2months and he is poty trained he knows how to fetch but he wont eat his dog food he perfers our food. and my mom said that it is not healthy so we try diffrent foods but so far we found nuthin that worked
give him nutro for puppies until he is 10 months old the bag even has a shih tzu on the front, give him only twice a day
and dont leave the food there, give him in the morning and evenings if he does not eat take it away after like 10 or 20 min eventually it will eat and in mid day you can give him a snack

I have a shihtzu and he is 7months now . i got him from mah local pet store. and we had him since he was 2months and he is poty trained he knows how to fetch but he wont eat his dog food he perfers our food. and my mom said that it is not healthy so we try diffrent foods but so far we found nuthin that worked

zomg no no no dont feed him your food
give him nutro for puppies until he is 10 months old the bag even has a shih tzu on the front, give him only twice a day
and dont leave the food there, give him in the morning and evenings if he does not eat take it away after like 10 or 20 min eventually it will eat and in mid day you can give him a snack
