Palin didn't say what this man claims. She said and I quote "we would live up to our responsibilities". You can read between the lines and get to the meaning of that by reading the NATO charter which says that members will come to mutual aid if a member is attacked. If Georgia was a member of NATO Russia would not have attacked because of that charter and that is why Russia opposes Georgian membership. Same thing with Ukraine.

Buckeye, I suppose you would like to add, "With NATO membership, Georgia's atrocities in S. Ossetia would have been much more widespread while its immunity would have been guaranteed!" Once you consider that assumption, NATO's guarantees to its membership as an all-encompassing deterrent become less promising.

I don't think Georgia committed atrocities and Russia has hampered independent investigations until the last couple of days. It will be more difficult to find the truth after this length of time to verify their claims.

Americans didn't respect the Soviet Union. We hated the the USSR. Russia is trying to piss Americans off by sending bombers and their cruiser to Venezuela but we don't care. This will not make us change our minds about missile defense or Georgian, Ukrainian membership in NATO. Russia could be developing good dialog with NATO and work cooperatively on missile defense but they want their way but are not going to get it.

We had the news that told us about the GDR atrocities with Russian backing that have been documented and proven. We had the knowledge of starving people left to fend for themselves while their government took from them what little they had. That's why we were happy when they collapsed not because we wanted bad things for the people but because we hated their government.

By the way, BuckeyeNation, for your information - Stalin was Georgian (born Djugashvili). His right hand man Lavrenty Beria, responsible for all the atrocities, directed mostly towards Russian people, was Georgian too. Russian people have suffered a lot from their "loving ways" and respected them no more than any other nation. However, past is past - zen buddism has never been America's strong point either. Just remember Vietnam, Iraq, Afganistan...

I'm aware of Stalin's birth place. I think Ukrainians may disagree with your view that ethnic Russians were damaged more by Stalin's atrocities. I see where you may be coming from though. If you are Russian you should know that many Russian people hold Stalin in high esteem. I agree that Stalin is the past but my comment was directed toward the past and not the present. I do not condone America's participation in the Vietnam or Iraq wars. I do support the war in Afghanistan.

True, Ukranian people suffered a lot from Stalin's regime,together with Russians and other nations. Many Russians were holding S. in high esteem (or rather were afraid not to) but many others didn't. Many Americans hold Bush in high esteem, but many think he is a bad news, to say the least. One just can't generalize - it would be simplistic and counter productive.
