Good sushi restaurants use freshly grated wasabi, or even give you a piece of the root and a little ceramic grater. You can tell even if they served finely grated because it falls apart in tamari/shoyu as tiny flakes instead of a dissolving paste.
I bought a bag of Wasabi peanuts the other day and wow they are delicious. Must eat only one at a time or they will blow the top of your head off. So glad you showed me how they are cultivated Kurt.... Thanks for another great video...... Doug.....=)
@tbone1143 Not to burst your bubble, but if it's dry and it's spicy, it's not actually wasabi.
It's horseradish, mustard and food coloring.
Wasabi loses all its distinctive spice once it dries out, and it can't get it back. (Chemical reaction on dessication blah blah look it up if you care)
@TheGzeus You mean that green putty thing they put in packaged sushi in the States? That's sad. I'll have to see if they have the fresh stuff at the local Korean market.
@LordBalto Yeah. The taste is similar (but not the same), but the sensation is wholly different.
"Hon-wasabi" (real wasabi) is actually more cooling to the mouth than natural mint! It's got zing, but no heat.
What's so intense about even small amounts wasabi is the vapours that float up your nasal passages. It kind of sizzles and explodes your face, then suddenly ceases, and you grab a tissue.
Most electric fences (at least all the ones I've ever worked with or around) electrify in pulses. So the fence may have a second or two without anything, then a quick pulse, another second, another pulse, and so on. I imagine only high security fences or somesuh are constantly electrified.
Your behaviour means somewhere out there some poor product risk assessment guy will be trying to work out how to simulate a scenario whereby some young guy decides to take a leak on their product! Not to mention modelling what people in the real world are likely to do when encountering an electric fence with a prominently displayed warning sign!
Wow! That's a beautiful looking sight Kurt, thanks for sharing! Question though: If you ate a wasabi leaf as seen in the video, would it taste anything like the paste stuff you normally see it restaurants and other similar places?

so what animals do you think the fence was meant to keep out?

The electric fence sends pulses of electricity instead of one main stream, that's why you didn't get shocked at first.

lol NEVER pee on an electric fence haha that must of been terrible.
someone actually died from peeing on a train track, its the fastest way to get a shock to the system.

Beautiful setting. What an ingenious terrace system... love the innovative use of water.
