i want to record some games and after 10 to 11 minutes the file size is at around 1.8 Gb please tell me the best settings to decrease the file size but still keeping a good quality. here are my settings: video: -compressor: camstudio lossles -quality 100 -frames 10 audio: - audio capture stereomix (but the ingame sound is too silent in the finished video) - recording format 22.05 kHz, stereo, 16-bit -compressed format lame mp3 -mci recording please help me
@lieseed For games, do not use CamStudio Lossless, as it was created for slideshow presentations. Use Jawor's Xvid (google that). Try these settings: SKFE 30, CFE 40, PBR 25 in Video Options. for audio, you'll get best sync if you check "Use MCI to record", but file size goes up from full-size audio. You can compress that later using AnyVideoConverter or Freemake Video Converter, among others. Turn up your audio playback volume to get more signal sent to Stereo Mix. Tell me how it goes!
well, i tried to record but camstudio said that it is not able to record the avi file with the current compressor, then i tried to record with the lagarith, but the finished file is just a picture of the first recorded second with the sound and after 7 minutes the file was about 1.7 gigabyte
(are there any restrictions of Xvid using windows 7 or/and Camstudio 2.6b?)
@lieseed Yes, actually - with all MP4 style codecs, the height and width have to be even numbers. If you like dragging with your mouse to create a region, use the "Fixed Region" option and click on the set button, drag out your selection, and then edit the numbers so they are even. Then it will work correctly with Xvid. Sorry - I always forget to mention that part! I don't know why Lagarith is having trouble, but you do not need a lossless codec to record games, and Xvid will be smaller
thank you for this advice, i have only one question left, i hope i am not annoying, the game was lagging while recording and also the finished video is lagging, should i chance the frame settings or anything else
@lieseed When the game is lagging, it sometimes is because CamStudio is taking too many resources for it to run smoothly. When that happens, you sometimes have to sacrifice faster playback rates/capture rates, so try SKFE still at 30, CFE at 50 and PBR to 20 and see if it improves. The main thing is to keep CFE X PBR = 1000, so experiment a bit. I wouldn't suspect CFE 100 and PBR 10 will look very good in games, though. If the problem is not CamStudio try CFE 25 PBR 40 but that's a push
@tbritton33 Thanks do the help! I have a question. If the video starts to come before the audio after a while ( a minute or so), what settings do I need to change? And if the audio starts comming before the video, what do I need to change?
@Sprangeful The video is all about what settings to use, so I'm not certain what your question is about. Use MCI to record should be checked in "Audio Options for Microphone" and Capture Frames Every TIMES Playback Rate should be 1000. (25|40, 40|25, 20|50, 50|20, 100|10, those all work well - try them for your situation. 100|10 only for slide shows).
@tbritton33 Thanks for the fast reply, I think I nailed it! Have had trubble getting it to sync, or even record before, but I think im set now. Thanks allot :)
@TheSimpsonFriends961 I now use Xvid, and provided a download link to Jawor's Xvid in the notes, because it is considered one of the best versions. Quality at 1 and you'll still get very good file sizes. I've recorded webinars up to 3 hours at 1280X720 using that codec, and now recommend it to everyone.
@TheSimpsonFriends961 no, but always get your software from the original download source. Realtek is a company that makes many of the audio systems on most motherboards lately. Only update your drivers through them directly.
If you use Camstudio at all, my channel would be perfect for you! I upload Camstudio Test/Settings videos and sometimes a tutorial. In my Camstudio Test videos, I show you the settings I use in that video. So you can see the settings in that video + how they perform at the same time! I upload at LEAST 1 video a month with different settings each time. If you like my videos, please subscribe to stay updated on which settings you can try out or possibly use as your regular settings!
@CamstudioTests Thanks for telling us about what you are doing! Cool! If your tests raise any questions, feel free to ask me - either here or via private message. I'd like to see some tests of Xvid and a little more information on what the tests show off. But great beginnings! Keep 'em coming!
@xanikarasl2rc Google for Jawor's Xvid and install the 32-bit version and use that. It is great for most purposes. Make certain your region's height and width are even numbers (use fixed region with the "Select" feature and make them even numbers).
Thanks so much for putting all these videos together. Whew, lots to learn and appreciate the help. When I check my video settings, there isn't an option for CamStudio Lossless...I have both 2.0 and the beta version loaded. Is there something else I need to do?
@MamaRedSpeaks CamStudio Lossless has been having trouble appearing lately with the old installer. But I've been getting such great results from (Google this) Jawor's Xvid that it is the only one I use now. And it appears with no problem in all versions. Make certain you download and install the 32-bit version, even if your machine is 64-bit (or install both) as CamStudio is a 32-bit program and needs 32-bit codecs.
@tbritton33 Thanks so much for the response. I saw the Jawor's Xvid reference in your video and thought it was specifically for games and high movement video (I'm doing the stuff you're showing here...how to use one software tool or another). I'll get a copy & get it loaded! FYI, I found a post on your forum and following it, got the CS 1.5 to load. If this is better (and I'm so new at this I may not know the dif, smile). I'm in! Many blessings!

Hey, I use DivX 6.9.2 Codec (2 logical CPUs) and same setting as yours.
Whenever I record, it brings up an error msg saying: Error Recording AVI file using current compressor. User Default Compressor? And won't continue.. If I press Yes, it defaults back to MS vid 1.... Anyone encountering same thing? (Im on W7, 32bit)
@danroh001 I removed DivX recently due to errors, but one thing to make certain of is that your height is divisible by 4 and your width is divisible by 2. (Or, I admit, I may have that reversed...) Most other codecs lately want both divisible by 2, but DivX has that one dimension that has to be divisible by 4 for some reason. Let me know how it works - like I say, a recent version crashed on me, and sent me over to Xvid (which many are saying is better now anyway...)
@tbritton33 I have MCI record on. I have recording format 44.1 kHz, mono, 16-bit. Compressed Format is PCM 44100 Hz, 16 Bit, Mono 88200 Bytes/sec. Interleave every 100 milliseconds. My compressor is CamStudio Lossless Codec v1.5. Quality: 100% Set Key Frames Ever 25 Frames, Capture Frames every 5 milliseconds. Playback Rate: 200 frames/second (I have a TB drive so I don't have to worry about disk space). Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
@Doommaster1994 I've un-checked "Interleave" recently, due to some article -- I admit to not knowing why, exactly... The only doubtful setting I see is your hard push of the processor, but that should not be affecting the sync (though it might cause the game or other programs to stutter). I'd still go with CFE of 25 and PBR of 40, or CFE 20 PBR 50. Keyframes are fine. How large a region are you capturing? Could you be overwhelming the processor? Many games only capture well when run in a window.
@thegamingdream Yes! I love Media Coder - I use the FLV edition, which allows you to create MP4's as well, and the batch-processing feature is not disabled. Plus it is much easier to use. One caveat I discovered is that the MP4 settings need to be set to "Baseline" for the vids to work properly with Windows Media Player. Otherwise, it was pretty straightforward to use. Try using Xvid and Intel IYUV - I hear they make small files right out the door.
@Zaptross As long as you keep the CFE times PBR equal to 1000, many settings are good. But for your compressor, download Jawor's Xvid - the CamStudio lossless won't record games well at all. I'd recommend CFE of 40 with PBR of 25 for pretty smooth game recording. You can set the SKFE to 40 as well, in that case.
@tbritton33 I am uploading my latest playthrough and it actually synced quite well. The games I record take up a good deal on the screen, I'd say about 1/3.
I was having issue's with sound on XP MCE SP3, no ,matter what option's i tried the sound recording in camstudio would come from my microphone ( add on external creative webcam, my 5 year old HP laptop doesn't have a built in cam or mic).
So .. remember from before having issues with cam / video source's, i unplugged my external creative cam..
Camstudio's sound recording WORKED now from my conextant AMC Audio speaker as the source. (cont)
hey how come i got all the setting that u have but i can only pull about 5 or 6 fps i have AMD Phenom II X3 (its got 3 cores) so i can easily handle it and when i run the program im only using about 30% of it
@jacobdorp How big a region are you capturing? That has everything to do with it, usually. I keep my regions at 1280X720 (YouTube's 720p) for just about everything on my quad-core, though sometimes use 856X480 (480p). Try a lower number for "Capture frames every" and a higher number for "Playback Rate" keeping the values so they multiply together to be 1000. 20/50 should push your machine as hard as it can go.25/40 is good. I use 40/25 for most stuff except tutorials, where I use 100/10.
@tbritton33 thanks it increased the fps but now i got another problem i had uninstalled it an reinstalled it but now all it does is it caputers about 1 frame and when i go to play it back it only dispales the 1 fram thw hole time and plys the audio so its like looking at a picture with audio with it
@jacobdorp Jacob - are you using (or have you installed) the recent version of DivX? I just had done that and got the exact same thing you have until I uninstalled DivX. Then everything returned to normal. If not DivX, did you install anything lately that could be causing this?
@cheeseguy1995 This one could be complicated. Could you join the camstudio dott org forum and post the question there, please? Or post all your Video Options settings here and I'll try to sort it out here for you.
great video! i had 15fps with "capture frames every" at 66 and changed to 45x20 and audio is sync now. i also want to ask you what is the best free program to convert 3gp movie files to avi or other formats, because i want to import them at windows movie maker
@ManoloGr1980 PapaJohn has reported great results from the "FreeMake video converter" for making WMM or WLMM compatible files. I also have had good luck with "any video converter free" - Google for those two both and their links will be at the top. PapaJohn has begun a Windows Movie Maker Facebook group you should find via the Facebook search and join. Excellent group!
Hey man, thanx for the tutorial, but I need you to help me with this: Those Camstudio settings can be used to record games?? I'm using "Record sound from speakers" in Camstudio 2.0 . The only thing I need is that my video can sync with the audio for the game recording.
@MetalBlueYoshi The main thing is to make sure to check "Use MCI to Record" in the audio settings, and follow my rules for the CFE and PBR settings (CFEXPBR=1000 always!) Let me know how you do! - Terry
@TheSabresMania There is no "lowest" acceptable fps setting - go with what looks good by doing some tests. Just keep the "Capture Frames Every" setting multiplied times the Playback rate equal to 1000, and set "Use MCI to Record" in the audio settings, and you should be OK. I think CFE 50 PBR 20 looks fine for games, but CFE 100 PBR 10 seems a little too choppy for them (that's fine for tutorials, but just looks jerky on games). But your machine's limitations may dictate what you can do. Test!
@AQWORLDSCHRISTIAN Heh - thanks! I've been hearing a bunch of nice comments on my "nice narrator's voice" lately. It's the content that counts, though. More videos soon!
The audio set up really isn't much of an issue - just use the "Record as Microphone" settings and you'll be golden. Watch the video about capturing both speaker and microphone on Windows 7 as some of what is mentioned there relates to some Vista set ups. (You do not HAVE to capture both!) Anyway, glad I could help!
@SoonToBeAwesome I hope it helps. Be certain to use Lagarith Lossless or some codec OTHER than CamStudio Lossless (designed for screens with little motion) - let me know how it goes!
@bubbalee97 Just to add a bit of recently learned knowledge, I've been receiving reports from many people that they've gotten great game recording results from using the Lagarith Lossless codec. The latest version is available from the author's site - just google for "lagarith lossless codec" and it should be the first one. Let me know how it works for you!
@tbritton33 Im having a problem installing the Lagarith Lossless Codec. A couple seconds in installation a message comes up saying "Installation Failed." Is there anything i can do?
@SageXGames If the Lagarith installer from the author's website failed, perhaps try the installer in the K-Lite Codec Full or Mega pack. Do not install everything in those packs! Only what you need! Let me know how it goes.
@bubbalee97 hey im making a lets play in minecraft and this helped alot i have some lets plays up already but u can add me on skype and u can be in one my skype name is Josh_saranthus
@glennda2 You're welcome! Thank you for the kind words. It was an issue I had wrestled with and finally found the reference to myself, so that compelled me to make this video in hopes I might help out others like ourselves! :-)
Thanks for describing the issue. I tried recording frames every 50 milliseconds and set the playback rate to 200 FPS and the playback rate was 10x faster than recorded. Now I understand why the video was going out of sync with the audio.
2 cookies to you man. If you hadn't provided those links to wikibooks, I'd still probably be trying to figure out how to get things to work. Unfortunately, I need to figure out how to get my FPS higher now though. x_x Probably only way to solve that is to upgrade from a 2.0 Ghz dual-core CPU. =/
Hay tbrittion33 i have a query if you could answer i would much apperciate it.
Basicly i tryed to make a tutorial and i put in a intro using Sony Vegas pro 9. I put the tutorial and intro together in sony vegas, i saved it , then when it came to uploading to youtube it said "could not verify audio codec" then the video failed to upload. Could you please tell me what to do to sole this problem, and information would be a great help, please . thankyou.
@MagikAcidProductions You must have a setting in Vegas for a sound compression type that YouTube cannot recognize. Set it for either .mp3 or PCM (uncompressed). Can you find out what compression you were using? I'd like to know what doesn't work! :-)
@moom1000 What settings are you using? I've been doing some tests, and found that the 50*20FR setting is the best to ensure that no matter what codec I use things stay in sync. I've been having good results with the Camstudio lossless codec 1.5 as well as with DivX set to the 720 setting at 32 bit resolution.
Give me more information and perhaps I can test the same settings on my machine to see if I can replicate the same issues.
@tbritton33 After some more testing I believe the problem lies within the audio codec settings. Using mp3, I cannot get it in sync, but using PCM or ADPCM it works OK. In the video settings I currently use 25/40/25, for audio Microsoft ADPCM with interleaving every 100 milliseconds. These settings seem to work, although I'd rather use mp3. Thanks for your reply.
@moom1000 Great to hear you have sync now. I had the same experience with the MP3 settings lagging me. I'm going to try using VirtualDub to convert the audio to MP3 after doing the recording process.
I did find out that checking the "Use MCI" box completely overrides the other settings, so you get stuck with stereo even with a mono mic. I'm going to switch to using the Microsoft ADPCM like you are doing, with the 22kHz Mono setting selected.
Found 10/100/10 or 30/100/10 is working well, also.
@moom1000 Though it is an extra step, I've been told that using VirtualDub you can re-save the video and audio using different compression codecs than it was created with. Try that out - I will also and let you know how it works out.
i have a problem when i record some thing it doesnt record sound. and i dont have a microphone like you do. all i have are two speakers to listen to sound. can you help
Camstudio 2.5 allows recording "What U Hear" from the speakers (but 2.0 does not). Search for Camstudio 2.5 online, or check out the blog article I have at my blog, as it has a direct link to the download for that version. To use the "What U Hear" feature, go to your audio control panel to the recording settings and check the check box under that volume level slider (also called "Stereo Mix" in Realtek sound cards). See the video comment I just posted up there!
@blackjt222 This is a file that normally is included with windows, but can be downloaded and placed either in the camstudio folder itself or into the system32 folder in your windows folder from the same download location as you found camstudio itself (at sourceforge). There is another dll file there you may need also - may as well get both of them! Hope that helps.
@jmans25 I use e-texteditor. It is an excellent porting to Windows of the very popular Textmate for the Mac. I paid for the lifetime ownership, it was so good (it is free as a demo).
@Webtutz Thanks - hopefully this video will slowly be discovered and ranked and thus eventually build up some views. I had trouble finding this information, so the more easily people find it, the better!
i had grat picture quote in till i updated now it shit all the setting are the same as thay where but in not as crisp as it was and i cant get the peveus verson back it pissed me rite off
@Hi675445 What version did you update to? You probably had some good settings in your original setup that were wiped out to the (BAD) default settings when you re-installed. You'll have to go through the options pages and set everything back up again from memory as best as you can.
When you find your optimal settings, please go ahead and post what you used!
do you know anything closer to 60 fps. also, why isnt your mouse choppy? look at my video (annihilation-engine) i used this tutorial. and my mouse was choppy in it so i cut it out. any ideas?
@TheMachinimanator Probably your hardware acceleration settings - most of the articles and tutorials I've watched recommended turning Hardware Acceleration completely off (In the Display Properties control panel/Settings Tab/Advanced Button/Troubleshooting Tab). Also, I typically see it suggested to switch the color depth to only 16 Bit rather than the default of 32 Bit In the Display Properties control panel/Settings Tab.
@TheMachinimanator I think 50 fps with 20 in the other setting (so 50X20=1000) is probably the fastest you can go and keep the video sync, though you could also try something crazy high like 100 fps with 10 as the other setting.

so what i do is use media coder
a program that will change the avi into mp4 and reduce the file size drastically
i was recording super mario bros and my 10 minute video was 370 mb
so i used media coder and it changed it to a mp4 sized 104.3 mb
and amazingly it kept the same quality
had it uploaded to youtube in about 10 mins
did i mention its free
thegamingdream 6 months ago
@thegamingdream Yes! I love Media Coder - I use the FLV edition, which allows you to create MP4's as well, and the batch-processing feature is not disabled. Plus it is much easier to use. One caveat I discovered is that the MP4 settings need to be set to "Baseline" for the vids to work properly with Windows Media Player. Otherwise, it was pretty straightforward to use. Try using Xvid and Intel IYUV - I hear they make small files right out the door.

To sum up... if your having issues with sound recording from your sound card / device... check your USB or other add-on sound capable device's.
For testing, un-plug the add-on's and see if your recording issue is fixed...
22HotTin 7 months ago
The problem wasn't with Camstudio, its my HP and the 4 multiport USB device i use .
Apparently, XP / HP / the multiport USB device drivers don't always play well together.
On occasion even my external 1T & 500G USB drives act up, and it all seems to be a driver issue & USB ports. (cont)

@tbritton33 hey i want to tell you,are these video settings good for games like terraria or minecraft? if they arent please tell me thank you :)
Zaptross 6 months ago in playlist How to Use Camstudio Tutorials (18 vids in Playlist)
You can set the SKFE to 40 as well, in that case.
tbritton33 6 months ago
@tbritton33 I am uploading my latest playthrough and it actually synced quite well. The games I record take up a good deal on the screen, I'd say about 1/3.
Doommaster1994 5 months ago
I was having issue's with sound on XP MCE SP3, no ,matter what option's i tried the sound recording in camstudio would come from my microphone ( add on external creative webcam, my 5 year old HP laptop doesn't have a built in cam or mic).
So .. remember from before having issues with cam / video source's, i unplugged my external creative cam..
Camstudio's sound recording WORKED now from my conextant AMC Audio speaker as the source. (cont)

hey how come i got all the setting that u have but i can only pull about 5 or 6 fps i have AMD Phenom II X3 (its got 3 cores) so i can easily handle it and when i run the program im only using about 30% of it
jacobdorp 7 months ago
@jacobdorp How big a region are you capturing? That has everything to do with it, usually. I keep my regions at 1280X720 (YouTube's 720p) for just about everything on my quad-core, though sometimes use 856X480 (480p). Try a lower number for "Capture frames every" and a higher number for "Playback Rate" keeping the values so they multiply together to be 1000. 20/50 should push your machine as hard as it can go.25/40 is good. I use 40/25 for most stuff except tutorials, where I use 100/10.

@tbritton33 thanks it increased the fps but now i got another problem i had uninstalled it an reinstalled it but now all it does is it caputers about 1 frame and when i go to play it back it only dispales the 1 fram thw hole time and plys the audio so its like looking at a picture with audio with it
jacobdorp 7 months ago
@jacobdorp Jacob - are you using (or have you installed) the recent version of DivX? I just had done that and got the exact same thing you have until I uninstalled DivX. Then everything returned to normal. If not DivX, did you install anything lately that could be causing this?

great video! i had 15fps with "capture frames every" at 66 and changed to 45x20 and audio is sync now. i also want to ask you what is the best free program to convert 3gp movie files to avi or other formats, because i want to import them at windows movie maker
ManoloGr1980 8 months ago

Please respond.
MetalBlueYoshi 9 months ago
@MetalBlueYoshi The main thing is to make sure to check "Use MCI to Record" in the audio settings, and follow my rules for the CFE and PBR settings (CFEXPBR=1000 always!) Let me know how you do! - Terry

Dragonsoft22 9 months ago
@TheSabresMania There is no "lowest" acceptable fps setting - go with what looks good by doing some tests. Just keep the "Capture Frames Every" setting multiplied times the Playback rate equal to 1000, and set "Use MCI to Record" in the audio settings, and you should be OK. I think CFE 50 PBR 20 looks fine for games, but CFE 100 PBR 10 seems a little too choppy for them (that's fine for tutorials, but just looks jerky on games). But your machine's limitations may dictate what you can do. Test!

Works like a charm.. Thank you very much !
Ain't even going near audio though. looks like alot of work tweaking system and loading drivers etc for Vista 32bit.
TheEuropeanOnion 11 months ago
@TheEuropeanOnion Cool! Glad it worked!

Could you please tell me what to do to sole this problem, and information would be a great help, please . thankyou.
MagikAcidProductions 1 year ago
@MagikAcidProductions You must have a setting in Vegas for a sound compression type that YouTube cannot recognize. Set it for either .mp3 or PCM (uncompressed). Can you find out what compression you were using? I'd like to know what doesn't work! :-)
tbritton33 1 year ago
Interesting concept, but doesn't work for me. Still out of sync.
moom1000 1 year ago
@moom1000 What settings are you using? I've been doing some tests, and found that the 50*20FR setting is the best to ensure that no matter what codec I use things stay in sync. I've been having good results with the Camstudio lossless codec 1.5 as well as with DivX set to the 720 setting at 32 bit resolution.
Give me more information and perhaps I can test the same settings on my machine to see if I can replicate the same issues.
tbritton33 1 year ago
@tbritton33 After some more testing I believe the problem lies within the audio codec settings. Using mp3, I cannot get it in sync, but using PCM or ADPCM it works OK. In the video settings I currently use 25/40/25, for audio Microsoft ADPCM with interleaving every 100 milliseconds. These settings seem to work, although I'd rather use mp3. Thanks for your reply.
moom1000 1 year ago
@moom1000 Great to hear you have sync now. I had the same experience with the MP3 settings lagging me. I'm going to try using VirtualDub to convert the audio to MP3 after doing the recording process.
I did find out that checking the "Use MCI" box completely overrides the other settings, so you get stuck with stereo even with a mono mic. I'm going to switch to using the Microsoft ADPCM like you are doing, with the 22kHz Mono setting selected.
Found 10/100/10 or 30/100/10 is working well, also.
tbritton33 1 year ago
@moom1000 Though it is an extra step, I've been told that using VirtualDub you can re-save the video and audio using different compression codecs than it was created with. Try that out - I will also and let you know how it works out.

blackjt222 1 year ago
@blackjt222
Block User
Camstudio 2.5 allows recording "What U Hear" from the speakers (but 2.0 does not). Search for Camstudio 2.5 online, or check out the blog article I have at my blog, as it has a direct link to the download for that version. To use the "What U Hear" feature, go to your audio control panel to the recording settings and check the check box under that volume level slider (also called "Stereo Mix" in Realtek sound cards). See the video comment I just posted up there!

@tbritton33 i downloaded it but its asking for MC71.DLL. what is that
blackjt222 1 year ago
@blackjt222 This is a file that normally is included with windows, but can be downloaded and placed either in the camstudio folder itself or into the system32 folder in your windows folder from the same download location as you found camstudio itself (at sourceforge). There is another dll file there you may need also - may as well get both of them! Hope that helps.

Hi675445 1 year ago
@Hi675445 What version did you update to? You probably had some good settings in your original setup that were wiped out to the (BAD) default settings when you re-installed. You'll have to go through the options pages and set everything back up again from memory as best as you can.
When you find your optimal settings, please go ahead and post what you used!
tbritton33 1 year ago
do you know anything closer to 60 fps. also, why isnt your mouse choppy? look at my video (annihilation-engine) i used this tutorial. and my mouse was choppy in it so i cut it out. any ideas?
TheMachinimanator 1 year ago
@TheMachinimanator Probably your hardware acceleration settings - most of the articles and tutorials I've watched recommended turning Hardware Acceleration completely off (In the Display Properties control panel/Settings Tab/Advanced Button/Troubleshooting Tab). Also, I typically see it suggested to switch the color depth to only 16 Bit rather than the default of 32 Bit In the Display Properties control panel/Settings Tab.
tbritton33 1 year ago
@TheMachinimanator I think 50 fps with 20 in the other setting (so 50X20=1000) is probably the fastest you can go and keep the video sync, though you could also try something crazy high like 100 fps with 10 as the other setting.
