As one of the younger listeners and a newbie to classical music, I can honestly say I have found no one except Vladimir Horowitz who can play this piece perfectly, especially from 8:40 onwards with no mistakes and perfect flow. If anyone has any suggestions of pieces they think I might like please feel free to let me know... :)
this is the definite recording of this piece. It has the most sublime pianissimo and fortissino I have ever heard.... for example at 7:02 it is just marvelous I hear those bass notes and I can feel chills it is wonderful. Also the speed is just right, it's not super fast or super slow it is just right. The pianissimo notes are also delightful such as in 04:55 and so on...
@asdfqwervd It's really funny that you think you're capable of judging this man. I assume you're quite the professional when it comes to playing the piano?
@FatToti I got a glimpse of your last message b4 u deleted it. in all seriousness by your logic, we also cannot praise horowitz because, heck I can't play the Ballade in G-minor by Chopin so what do I know about good or bad playing, right? The problem is people can only accept praise for those they love, and not criticism. What I said about Horowitz is very true...you ever listen to his take on Schubert's Gb impromptu? Holy smokes it's slow with xtreme rubato.
@asdfqwervd What do you mean you got a glimpse of it? Did my comment load in parts on your computer screen? I have no idea what you're talking about, honestly. Do you have schizophrenia?
@FatToti you know what I'm talking about you stuck up little shit. you have the dumbest logical arguments I have ever heard...that's probably why you removed that comment, but it's okay, a copy of it is in my inbox since you hit the reply button already.
Just an amateur observation: few people can relieve the tension that builds up before the A major section with the high A major chord, like Horowitz does here.
@Ratoscruvy well it depends what you mean by trust. it is by no means a scholarly source but it is useful if you want to learn the basics of a subject without getting overloaded with technical jargon... you could say i'm not a wiki sceptic.
but anyway that's beside the point if you are referring to this piece, because you can always use your ear to compare other versions of this piece with horowitz.
@Chopinrocks71 I disagree as well, I think this piece was played beautifully and its become my favourite version amoungst the others I have heard so far. In fact, many pianists agree that Horowitz has set the standard on how to play this piece. Don't believe me? Check wikipedia :)
I was actually surprised at how much insight there is in this performance. A number of new inner lines, connections, long-term patterns are brought to the surface very explicitly. It's not exactly subtle, but as a road map to just what is contained within the piece if you look hard enough, it's actually rather impressive.
At 5:43 he really starts to butcher this piece, no unity or symmetry as he changes the tempo or mood of the passages. This instantly made me cringe and want to stop the pain. I guess you either love Horror Witz or hate him. I think I can safely say where this version can go.
@rushnovodic Everyone is entitled to their opinions. All you have to do is click on comment and proceed to type. Last I checked, anything that is available to voice an opinion can be commented on. This I have done. Here's another opinion. It takes brains to memorize music and project it through your hands on to the keys, however it takes talent to transcend beyond memorization. I'd rather listen to someone making technical errors but playing with soul than a robot like him.
Totally blown away. That passage which starts aproximently at 8:45 is hard enough to pull off at any tempo. Horowitz's incredible flat fingered technique allows him to bring that particular passage to a level of unheared dimension.
Does anyone know if Horowitz ever met or communicated his teacher Sergei Tarnowsky after the latter moved to the United States? I have a vicarious curiosity about the life of Horowitz and some information is hard to find.
@jacgallo Very likely, Tarnowsky settled in the USA before Horowitz did, but in the 1930's all of the Russian emigres had occasion to meet and communicate - I mean, Rachmaninoff, Horowitz, Heifetz, Milstein, The Lhevinnes, Siloti, Hofmann, etc... were all in/around New York/Philadelphia. There are many great biographies of Horowitz published in the USA.
@iniohos2 Are you speaking about Chopin...XD? Because the composer hated the Jews. Chopin's talent and Horowitz's virtuosity is not related to the religion. To attribute a talent to the race of the subject already the Nazi did it
I think you should reconsider your comment!! Don't let the propaganda influence you mind, every man is for him self, making stamp in history if he can. Horowitz can make his stamp in books of history, but not because he's a Jew but because he has grate talent which he managed to develop to maximum level.. Are you aware of fact that there are tons of successful people who r not Jews? And guess what, it doesn't matter, at all! When you grow up, you will understand! Piss:)))off
Is Horowitz the only pianist that can hold the right tempo on the presto in the end? Everyone seems to play it way too slow, but this guy is brilliant

I have been waiting several decades for this historic recital to be available on DVD but have since given up.I am therefore infinitely grateful to Sissco for making this event available, so that serious piano students everywhere can watch the greatest pianist that ever lived at the peak of his transcendental artistry. When Horowitz first visited Rudolf Serkin at his home, he played this G minor Ballade, and Serkin said he almost fell over, and had never heard playing like that before.
I've been working on the Ballade, i turn 16 in two weeks...I played it, and I have a few mistakes, but if you guys could tell me what you think about my version of Chopin's Ballade No. 1, I'd be happy. Go to my page and click on the video, "Chopin's Ballade No. 1 in G Minor." Thanks. :)

@TheDoucheChanel You may be right, it's just that I had several eargasms listening to this interpretation of the first ballade, and I definitely prefer his Chopin. But it's just my opinion :)
Kissin plays this piece sooooooooo much better. I've yet to find any version by any pianist who even comes close to playing this piece as good as Kissin. Unfortunately his version just got taken down youtube =(
Words are not necessary! Why do we even listen to some shitty musics nowadays where they just say bullshit when we have this treasures?! This is just perfect!
@DiniGama I hate modern music. Its getting worse too. on the radio they were talking about a new genre of music that's becoming more popular and they played a song. it is a blend of noises that happen at very random times. it is the most horrible thing i have ever heard. there's no depth or technique. music now is all about one key and a drum beat. its shameful.
i always tell people nothing is perfect, that all finish product are always a work in progress. Although Horowitz may had minor mistakes, every time i listen to this recording, i feel, this is more than merely perfection, this is what makes good music, Horowitz has made this his own.Anyone can perfect a technique, but to let someone in your world, to make someone feel something almost divine, transcending this world, that is not even worthy of perfection but in the places of angels and saints.
As one of the younger listeners and a newbie to classical music, I can honestly say I have found no one except Vladimir Horowitz who can play this piece perfectly, especially from 8:40 onwards with no mistakes and perfect flow.
