You need to try this in to see. Palm down, thumb out makes a 'V' it 'cannot' slip, it falls into the 'V' made by the thumb and first finger every time, when the baton is taken and the hand brought forward the baton faces forward ready for hand over, no adjustment needed it is always taken at the front end not half way. Also takes all the strain from the shoulder as the arm is held at a lower angle this makes for a better sprint action. It is a slick safe handover which absolutely does not fail.
@andersonec1 It really doesn't end up that way in reality. If your palm is facing down, the upsweep from the incoming runner results in you grabbing the baton at the top with the rest of it protruding down from your hand. I've been doing relays for almost 20 years and palm up is safer as if it falls, it falls into your hand and when the baton is passed, it is gripped at the bottom every time. You could not be more wrong, sorry. Watch the Jamaican WR slo-mo and see why.
It could happen again if they changed their baton exchange technique. The receiver must have his hand palm down with the thumb pointing outwards, this makes for a failsafe, quick handover, I could expand on the benefits but they don't listen.
@andersonec1 Maybe for anchor leg upsweep may be better, but downsweep is safer for first 2 as it doesn't require moving the baton before changing over. More chance of dropping it if your hand is facing down also.
I watched this live and I was standing up yelling at the TV ''Move it Mark MOVE MOVE MOVE - OH SHIT....HE'S COMING.....OOOOOHHHHHHHH MARK YOU BEAUTY!!!!'' - most exciting relay race I've ever seen and a great GB sporting moment - up there with 4x400m Tokyo 1991
Typing right now- I'm not american. But I have to say: when Mark Lewis Francis saw the VT of the last 50 meters by Maurice Greene, I bet Lewis became at least a little less arrogant.
This was great because up until then Colin Jackson and Michael Johnson were rubbishing British sprinters saying that had absolutely no hope of getting into the sprint finals etc..okay they did not.. Darren Campbell had the last laugh in his interview " Colin Jackson I;ve got an Olympic Gold Medal !"
Its the relay and if you can't get the baton properly you lose thats what cost the Americans but who cares
Fuck those boys must have had one fuck of a rush winning that. Amazing. Legends. You've got to win the race, they did. Maurice was coming like a bull though.
American sprinters are all on steroids which makes this even better. They really are the biggest cheaters in athletics. STeroids is part of their culture.
I love watching this video then re-reading all the comments. "If Greene had more to run" this and "If USA had 3 clean changes" that. Bitter pill to swallow isn't it?! Which we could actually get some tips from Justin Gatlin about........
Maurice Green looks so pissed off when the anthem is playing. I understand disappointment immediately after the event, but he could be a better sport on the podium.
When you are playing at that level, and you lose because of poor mechanics, something that you practice over and over and over- not because your are slower or even that you tripped....believe me I understand.
@kvocalist But lewis francis would have won by more distance if they had less to run so what you said didn't make sense. Everyone runs the same distance and the UK did it first, USA couldn't keep up and UK won.
@FieldDave44Tent Well duh of course francis wud have still won if the distance was shorter cus his team ran a good handover...i aint knocking them at all...they did great! as i said its good to see UK beat the USA for once! i just feel if it was abit longer, maurice wud have bust his ass! usa team was shite to me, except maurice.
Come on guys we have to give it to Britain they perofrmed, and we messed up. Plus it wouldn't be fun if we won all the time. I like our pattern of winning; which is the other 95% of the time over britain.
@racewalkingrules I'm talking about athletes. Not elitist sports. plus I hate to bring up a cliche but I'm an avid fan of watching cycling as well, and a guy named Lance Armstrong wasn't to shabby for the U.S.
@P27Barreta how exactly are any of those elitist? lance armstrong is a ROAD RACING CYCLIST you fucking moron. google search "chris hoy" and educate yourself. typical yank, idolising steroid infested athletes, yeah he's never tested positive, but how many of his former rivals have said he used to inject? 3 is it now? and counting...
@racewalkingrules Look Dude you need to calm down. First off what i meant by "elitist" is that you don't need to be an athlete to do those sports(nothing wrong with them). Second, not everyone can get good at cycling or sailing because most people do not have access to what is necessary; and I'm sure, due to England's history, you guys should be the best at sailing. Anyways Congratulations on the win all the same, now just repeat it multiple times, and i'll retract my original statement. Cheers.
@P27Barreta u idiot, look how many more people u have in ur country compared to ours and the sports system u have in ur colleges, we have none of this in the UK, we produce good sportsman time and time again, give credit where it is due, if we had ur money pumped into sports and a higher population we would piss all over u yanks everytime,
@racewalkingrules cycling... His name is Lance Armstrong.. but the other 2 sports you listed who gives a fuck about sailing and boat rowing lol. Its called a motor look them up they are nice
@extreme4767 shut up you fucking idiot, seriously. Great brit team, trademark bend running from Devonish, greatest finish from Lewis Francis, without forgetting Campbell who always has a knack for winning medal, great starter like Gardner........poor US relay exchange = Gold for GB !!
@fantastischfish yeah right, so if they had lost or dropped the baton then these black athletes would have been failures? The world is sadly still not in a place where race is not noticed or mentioned anymore....
as a american all i can say is this. Usa was the faster team, however like always they mess up on the exchange.GB is not as fast however the clean handoffs get the job done. I loved the mo run at the end. wow that was great. also great burst of acceleration from MLF his first 10meters was amazing burst. was also great to hear a commentator actually make it exciting.
Look we hardly win much in sport so give us credit when we do. Just as we give credit to great American sportsmen and women. Can't see past the Jamaicans for the forseeable future. Their C team at the Commonwealths gave our A team a run for it's money. Can't wait for 2012 gonna be a cracker!!

Enjoy it while it lasts GRB cos you will never ever see gold again in relay. your commentators are pathetic its like its the end of the world. arseholes
@trishaashraf erm bruv, at least half of that american team has been banned at some point for doing drugs....and u still couldn't beat 4men from a tiny lickle island - ....haha
@trishaashraf we just won gold in the 4 x 100m at the commonwealth games so you were wrong there m8. think before you type stuff out m8 as anything can happen in sports. i will admit the commentators were a bit nuts though but no one ever thought we had a chance compared to the americans
@trishaashraf - waa, waa, we lost so we must cry about it. Go develop another drug so you can confess & screw up the result in 10 years time after robbing clean athletes of their moment of glory.
Gatlin was a vein-spiker & Campbell matched him stride for stride, then Campbell changed cleanly to Devonish while Gatlin(probs had on his roid-eyes)screwed the change with Miller then MLF holds off Mo Greene, the most dominant 100m runner in history, to win the gold for GREAT. FRICKIN. BRITAIN! GOLD!
@pondguard22 And for your info i don't give a fucking shit whether the so called Great Britain or the USA win a gold medal, cos to me they are both plastic countries. bye bye
@pondguard22 thanks, tell your papa to send me some. can i give you my address?though on second thought i don't need a lollipop from you. you can save it for yourself. thank you
i rmember watching this live back in 2004, and the goosebumps were unbelievable when Mark Lewis Francis gets the baton in the lead and the sound of the British crowd going nuts...
Watch from 0:12 I gotta say Darren Campbell kept up with and maybe even gained some ground on Gatlin on 2nd leg. He definately didn't lose any ground on him anyway...
Deserved this for Darren Campbell, he was robbed of an individual gold in 2000 Olympics by a Drug Cheat Greek, and had his silver from the 2003 World champ relay taken from him cos of the the Drug Cheat Dwain Chambers being a total idiot. Darren you are a legend

too bad america>britain, dont get me wrong. britain is a beautiful country, ive been there many times. but if i had to choose a place to live my life, i would choose america without a doubt
@MarcSAFCCUFC ohh denial is a bad thing, but im pretty sure u will get over it. and yeah thnx for the spelling lesson, just thought i'd let u know since nothing was spelled wrong genius
@Ducksrule123 "too bad america>britain, dont get me wrong. britain is a beautiful country, ive been there many times. but if i had to choose a place to live my life, i would choose america without a doubt" Learn to use capitals.
"apparently u do since u replied to me u piece of shit" *You, you and you.
"ohh denial is a bad thing, but im pretty sure u will get over it. and yeah thnx for the spelling lesson, just thought i'd let u know since nothing was spelled wrong genius" *thanks etc.
@Ducksrule123 Nope, why would I be in denial to someone that lives over 3000 miles away. Can I ask what parts of Britain you claim to have visited as you've probably been to London and that's it.
@Ducksrule123 So no experience of the North-East, meaning you missed Newcastle, Sunderland, Hartlepool, Yorkshire in general. Oxford and Cambridge so you haven't seen the uni's, or ANY of the midlands. Great to see that you can judge the country on 4 locations.
@Ducksrule123 I quite evidently do know how to read. Another thing wrong with your statement is you saying Britain is a beautiful country when the only places you've visited are in England, and considering Britain is England, Wales and Scotland, you have missed out two countries on your visits.
@Ducksrule123 I would call it missing out on a massive part of culture. No, I haven't, but I'm not the one trying to claim my country is better than someone else's.
@MarcSAFCCUFC i wouldnt call it massive, i didnt visit there to learn more about the culture anyways. and once again, i never said that the US was a better country than britain. i said if i had to choose a place to live it would be the US.
@Ducksrule123 Yes, which would suggest that the people are better, the culture is better etc. Perhaps you should recheck your poor communication and people won't question you in future.
American comments include - if, but, we, us, usually, oh, baton, best = shut up, we won cause we crossed the line first. Best of British, as you's have learned everything you know from the best, GREAT BRITAIN!! Rule Britannia!
4x 100 aint about just the talents its about the TEAM WORK, just look at the changes of the brits compared to the americans, no doubt every american in that team was 'faster' than every brit but we did it!!!!
I'll never forget watching this on tv, Kelly Holmes had just won her 2nd Gold of the games and it almost felt like 'oh well, we've done for today.. but let's watch this final anyway'. I doubt anyone would have thought we'd win it and that final baton change when we realised we were ahead, we all jumped out of our seats and screamed!! Pure ecstacy!
I personally think that is how you should enjoy a win, remarks on here (however much in jest) are a disgrace to a proud moment IMO
@Ferg1985 i jumped up and down for this.the only other time i did that was when jonny wilkinson kicked the winning drop goal in aussie2003.oh and when steve claridge shinned a flukey winner to send lcfc up in 1996 lol
now now no need to be rude.the usa wins most of the time due to money ivested and the millions of people to choose from.saying that....its nice for the underdog to win.god save the queen!
fairs fair usa shit on us when it comes to athletics but when it comes down to music thats another thing and if you dont like it lump it comprende and they collectivly have 1 thing in common they're all drug cheats oh ye forgot to mention we have the best comedians 2

That's like the first and last time GB has ever won a track and field event so don't get too excited! When the 2012 Olympics come around you guys are not even going make it to semi finels! It's going be a battle between USA and Jamica no Brits!
@djcheff Yes, GB may not get medals in the sprints, but we get medals in track and field, think jessica ennis, christina hurogo, philip idowu, kelly holmes, denise lewis. And of course you guys will always beat us medal wise, you do have a population of 300million, we have one fifth of the population you do and still manage to produce amazing talent!
I agree with you one everything except the population bit. The population does not really matter. I mean it is the support the athletes get. For example, India has a billion people; yet barely barely any medals. There getting one medal is a big deal. China, with similar population won a lot of medals. It comes down to the support the athletes get.
Like MrBethGodwin said GB has had some great track and field athletes over the years.
Also the US has almost 5 times the population that GB has and you only won just over 2 times as many medals and less than double as many Golds at the 08 Olympics.
And at 2012 it ain't exactly gonna be a battle between USA and Jamaica in the 100. It's gonna be another stroll in the park for Bolt and a host of other athletes working their asses off to stay in the same camera shot.
and the irony of that is we could win the last 1 with it being on home turf and it being 2012 and all sorry compatriotos had to break the lingo down so these dumb cunts can understand zurox my ass and your face you cunts
I think that the Hispanics in the US will be the majority in about 50 to 70 years - which means that the official language of the US will, in fact, be Spanish.
13 dislikes must be american

Boom shah town! They will always be the 2004 winners. That counts! They're the only ones to get a wreath on their heads too!

@trishaashraf we just won gold in the 4 x 100m at the commonwealth games so you were wrong there m8. think before you type stuff out m8 as anything can happen in sports. i will admit the commentators were a bit nuts though but no one ever thought we had a chance compared to the americans
camaster2004 1 year ago
@trishaashraf - waa, waa, we lost so we must cry about it. Go develop another drug so you can confess & screw up the result in 10 years time after robbing clean athletes of their moment of glory.
Gatlin was a vein-spiker & Campbell matched him stride for stride, then Campbell changed cleanly to Devonish while Gatlin(probs had on his roid-eyes)screwed the change with Miller then MLF holds off Mo Greene, the most dominant 100m runner in history, to win the gold for GREAT. FRICKIN. BRITAIN! GOLD!

@Ducksrule123 Nope, why would I be in denial to someone that lives over 3000 miles away. Can I ask what parts of Britain you claim to have visited as you've probably been to London and that's it.
MarcSAFCCUFC 1 year ago
@MarcSAFCCUFC london, liverpool, cumbria, and gloucestershire
Ducksrule123 1 year ago
@Ducksrule123 So no experience of the North-East, meaning you missed Newcastle, Sunderland, Hartlepool, Yorkshire in general. Oxford and Cambridge so you haven't seen the uni's, or ANY of the midlands. Great to see that you can judge the country on 4 locations.
MarcSAFCCUFC 1 year ago
@MarcSAFCCUFC looks like u dont know how to read, i said britain is a beautiful country but i would rather live in america if i had the choice
Ducksrule123 1 year ago
@Ducksrule123 I quite evidently do know how to read. Another thing wrong with your statement is you saying Britain is a beautiful country when the only places you've visited are in England, and considering Britain is England, Wales and Scotland, you have missed out two countries on your visits.
MarcSAFCCUFC 1 year ago
@MarcSAFCCUFC i wouldnt call it missing out, the only reason ive gone to england is for family visits anyways, have u ever been to the USA?
Ducksrule123 1 year ago
@Ducksrule123 I would call it missing out on a massive part of culture. No, I haven't, but I'm not the one trying to claim my country is better than someone else's.
MarcSAFCCUFC 1 year ago
@MarcSAFCCUFC i wouldnt call it massive, i didnt visit there to learn more about the culture anyways. and once again, i never said that the US was a better country than britain. i said if i had to choose a place to live it would be the US.
Ducksrule123 1 year ago
@Ducksrule123 "too bad america>britain" > means greater than. That is all.
MarcSAFCCUFC 1 year ago
@MarcSAFCCUFC in terms of places to live, yes. third time i've had to say this
Ducksrule123 1 year ago
@Ducksrule123 Yes, which would suggest that the people are better, the culture is better etc. Perhaps you should recheck your poor communication and people won't question you in future.

@MarcSAFCCUFC hahaha and this is coming from the one who apparently, "didnt care". nice job buddy
Ducksrule123 1 year ago
@Ducksrule123 I didn't care about what you said, but when you try and twist your way out of your original statement, yes, I do care.

@MarcSAFCCUFC hahaha riight, obviously u took my statement in a different manner than what it really meant, its ok

4x 100 aint about just the talents its about the TEAM WORK, just look at the changes of the brits compared to the americans, no doubt every american in that team was 'faster' than every brit but we did it!!!!
numba1danman 1 year ago

That's like the first and last time GB has ever won a track and field event so don't get too excited! When the 2012 Olympics come around you guys are not even going make it to semi finels! It's going be a battle between USA and Jamica no Brits!
djcheff 2 years ago
@djcheff Yes, GB may not get medals in the sprints, but we get medals in track and field, think jessica ennis, christina hurogo, philip idowu, kelly holmes, denise lewis. And of course you guys will always beat us medal wise, you do have a population of 300million, we have one fifth of the population you do and still manage to produce amazing talent!
MrBethgodwin 1 year ago 7
@MrBethgodwin very well said
sgh95 1 year ago
I agree with you one everything except the population bit. The population does not really matter. I mean it is the support the athletes get. For example, India has a billion people; yet barely barely any medals. There getting one medal is a big deal. China, with similar population won a lot of medals. It comes down to the support the athletes get.
Zamir143 1 year ago
Like MrBethGodwin said GB has had some great track and field athletes over the years.
Also the US has almost 5 times the population that GB has and you only won just over 2 times as many medals and less than double as many Golds at the 08 Olympics.
And at 2012 it ain't exactly gonna be a battle between USA and Jamaica in the 100. It's gonna be another stroll in the park for Bolt and a host of other athletes working their asses off to stay in the same camera shot.

I think that the Hispanics in the US will be the majority in about 50 to 70 years - which means that the official language of the US will, in fact, be Spanish.
So don´t worry - just wait. *gg*

Just goes to prove that a team can have the fastest runners, but not necessarily win the relay... it's all in the baton-changing!
