The Florida All State Band just played Ecstatic Waters. It was amazing. We used a four foot long two inch diameter dowel attached to an 8" by 8" by 12" block of wood.
While the idea is very funny, it would be very inadvisable. Unless you know the exact speed at which the block falls, and you can time it so that the block will hit the bottom with the orchestra's downbeat, it would be very difficult and impractical.
@adachir87 Actually, the percussionist did exactly that, and it worked beautifully. It helps that there's a click track in the piece at that point, so the timing is exactly the same every time. I believe he had to release it a beat and a half in advance.
