i read something in wiki about this. when zhuge liang died, the shu forces withdrew to their camps while keeping his death a secret. when sima yi found out about his death, he gave orders to attack shu. jiang wei sent someone to pretend to strike. sima yi thought that zhuge liang was feigning his death and his army retreated. the fact that sima yi "got scared" of a dead zhuge liang went across the land. when he have heard about this, he said "i can do battle with the living, but not the dead"
