  • I want to take Elizabeth Chambers to pound town

  • so they stole my money through taxes to fund there solar panels , so the truth they are living of the tax payer , this family are just theives

  • Can someone please explain to me why some people get so damn offensive and mean-spirited on YouTube? What is the fucking problem? Why can't some folks just enjoy the video or not and leave? Why attack the videographer? This isn't porn. This video wasn't made to get you off. If you want to be pandered to, rent a porno.

  • I think that Justin made some notably intelligent and relevant points and explanations - while the host seemed distracted in moments and...superficial in her presence/presentation? We humans could (and do) find something to be critical of about every other human. This family (and if one watches a number of the different videos about them - a lot of useful information is presented) is living in a noteworthy and admirable manner. How many of us could be inspired (as I am) by their example??

  • in the video description, why would anyone limit toilet flushing and baths/showers? That is great that utility bill is only 15 dollars a month though for them. Strange to hear someone's utility bill went higher after making the switch. I wonder why?...

  • @Sharoney- So you have no family drama? You don't have your own religious/spiritual beliefs- which you are free to believe? You don't have people in your family who have philosophical differences on how to live life? Everyone in your family has successful relationships-there is no divorce? You don't believe in the right to start a home business and have a website? Don't try to discredit what this amazing family is doing for the planet...I think you are a mean person for claiming these things.

  • The family have a website with lots of pretty pictures but they tell you NOTHING about how they do something except in the vaguest possible terms. They want you to pay for that information (or donate to their "institute").

The father is a former member of a evangelical church who left because they weren't strict enough for him. His wife left him; another son who decided to have a life has been basically disowned, all references wiped from their website. The girls almost never leave the house.

  • im stoned

  • @xcombine arnt we all

  • No, the electric bill is NOT $15.00 a month, it is $15.00 a month plus the 14,000 they spent on all the solar equipment. The system won't start paying for itself for more than 10 years. Terribly NOT "green".

  • no solar shower

  • @lestrueseek

There was a brief shot of a shower right at the beginning. 0:17

Title is still a bit misleading, though. I was expecting to see more about the shower.

  • I agree. The HOST looks like she smokes good homegrown green.

  • I'm sorry as the title shows Urban Homestead - Solar Outdoor Shower .. Where is the SHOWER part of this video?

  • So they have 12 panels at 165 watts. That means 165(watts) x 12 = 1.98kw. They say the average sunlight is about 6 hours per day, so 1.98kw x 6 hours = 11.88kw per day. If they use 6 kw per day, that means 11.88-6kw = 5.88kw sold back to the electric company. Hmmm....Is my math right? I agree, they shouldn't have to be paying any electric unless the company doesn't buy the power from them.

  • @amberstorck Name plate capacity is the amount of electricity generated in full sun. Some days are good, some days are bad, but there is an average on the NREL website: If there were 6 hours of sun this system would produce the 11.88 kW/h you need to add the unit of time to make it of any use. the way electricity use is described in these comments is like how saying how much gas you put in your car by describing the nozzle size!

  • The panels should be higher angle- at least about 35 deg. You would double your winter efficiency.

  • I bet they are way happier than most anyone....

  • this is a rep off

  • Sorry, I don't see any financial benefits from going off grid. My electric bill runs $35-$50 a month. The repairs & up keep long term on these systems would probably figure more than that. I try to use the smallest possible energy but would rather have the dependability of the grid. When I flip a switch at 3 in the morning the grid is there. I'll cut waste in other places, I want electricity.

  • @999Atwood Do you live in a cave and have one light bulb? $50 a month; really?

  • @jc8ward No but I do keep all lights off except the light i'm using at the time. My bill this month $54.21 I have an electric dryer, electric cooking stove, Frig, I go light on the central air & use a fan in the room I'm in at the time. Water heater & furnace are gas, gas bill runs about $50 also in the summer & $100-$125 in winter. I just can't see the benefit of solar when I can get the grid electric so cheap. I have a newer home, well insulated 1000 sq ft

  • @999Atwood I see. Here in New Orleans Entergy combines gas and electric and my bill ranges from 90 in Spring and fall and 200-225 in Summer, 125 in winter, for 1000 sq ft. But you don't have to drop the grid with solar power, in fact, in most states the power company has to buy excess electricity and you only buy electricity at night. My neighbor installed a system 3 months ago and he has about the same size house. His last 3 bills have been under $30. The IRS gives a 30% tax write off

  • @jc8ward I would be interested if the up keep expenses are not too much. I will have to research.

  • @999Atwood Solar panels require almost no upkeep. They need to be washed occasionally, but that is it. They are usually guaranteed for 25 years but they will last far longer than that, more like 50 years. Find a local installer and find out about rebates and tax deductions. Most companies offer No payments or interest until you get your tax return.

  • @999Atwood Oh, Solar water heaters are very cheap, circa $1000, and you get the same tax benefit.

  • What does this video have to do with a solar shower?

Using Energy Star fridge, washer and ect, cut their usage in 1/2? I don't think so!

$15 a month vs. probably 125 in electric a month, multiply by 12, they might have that system paid off in about 10 + years, if they stay in that home. They're also still tied to the grid. It would cost 1000's more to add.

I hope solar cost comes down so the average family can have it. As it is now, it's cost prohibitive for the average person (unless DIY)

  • More is good! WTF!

  • Video title FAIL. Solar panel WIN

  • what did this have to do with a solar shower?

  • THE HOST IS STONED.

  • that's all they grow back there!

  • 12KW!! Why are they paying any electric bills? That more than suffices.

  • @Anothercoilgun Probably wire maintenance charge from their power company or some bs like that. You still have to pay for the hookup even if you don't use the service, right?

  • Help me out here........solar power should also be limited?? Why?

  • i would love to do this, just cant afford it!

  • Build your own. There are resources online to help you. If you don't live where an HOA will screw with you, consider building wind turbines as well.

  • She keeps cheesing at the camera about that dude's super-sweet 'stache.

  • Thanks for sharing!

Did you check the weight load on the roof!

You'll get an earthquake, make sure

to add more structural support to the building. Looks like good mounting, ventilation under and around those panels is important!

    Heat decreases the power output.

  • lol elizabeth is from the internet.

but that does look great and i wish i had solar pannels.

  • this sounds pretty cool but the cost way to expensive. plus i live in Massachusetts we don't get much uv rays.

  • lol i live in seattle dont even talk about not getting uv's, people here have solar panels + solar hot water

  • @storm104 They work great in Germany and that is further north than you.

  • i saw on the news here in Australia everyone in the street got a solar panel and now they want to build a big building over it so they had to change the plan but it still blocked so now they have gone to the government as also they are making 700$ a day selling solar energy

  • I'm interested in what you have to say because I'm from Australia but I didn't understand anything you said! I'm a low income earner in Queensland... can I get free or rebated solar panels at the moment??? thanks. No offense by the way.

  • no everyone in the street got one not free or rebated

  • I'm from the us and didn't understand anything you said, either. Probably for a different reason, though. hahaha

  • creativity and will are the only tools needed to change and use energy from resources like the sun and it's all for free too!!!

  • a great addition to this video would be resources or more information about purchasing and/or installation.

  • Elizabeth Chambers looks beautiful. It distracts me from the video. Anyway, this family is on the right track.

  • this was about solar panels and not a solar shower.

damn it stop playing with the shingles.
