The script says there is a group of 4 that includes somebody dressed up as a monkey in persian robes, playing the symbols, and somebody dressed up as a toy soldier. The script points out that the group plays 'awkwardly' throughout.
After seeing this on tour a couple years ago and even seeing the Phantom's understudy I still can't watch the movie it disapoints me, and even hateing Roaul's caracter I loved Sean MacLaughin in the National Tour
when i saw this at aged ten i was so amazed at how the phantom just 'appears there. now i see it and its sooooooo bleeding obvious. its still great though.
This Red Death costume is a TON better than the one from the movie. When The Phantom arrived to the Masquerade in the film version, I didn't find him all that menacing. But when he appeared HERE, I was terrified. No wonder the whole party went silent! I mean LOOK AT HIM! Plus, that magic trick of his left me wondering "how'd he do that?!", while the film version left me thinking "meh, trap door".
@saychristian Well, to each their own. To Gerard's credit, when I first saw the costume in the movie, I was a little threatened by it. But nowhere near as scared as I was of THIS costume. I think the mask and lack of a hat might have had something to do with it... I dunno, I guess I prefer my Red Death costumes to be more elaborate, the best example of which being in the Robert Englund version (check it out!). The costume in the 2004 film wasn't bad as a design, but it just wasn't scary.
The broadway version is amazing, but we totally beat the movie. It's such a hard musical to do.. it was amazing. I dont know about the other schools that did it (it's not many, I'm pretty sure we were the first in New York state to do it) but we really sounded like broadway quality.
This was amazing in new yorks magestic theater best night of my life so far looking forward to seeing love never dies (sequel to POTO) If you haven't seen phantom of the opera go and see it as you wont regret it and its enchanting :)
I love all the girls outfits, 'cept for Christines, it's just too frilly and the colors don't suit her. My favorite Christine-dress for this scene will always be the one in the movie. Plus, did anyone else notice that she's wearing boots with it? Silver boots. It just doesn't work.
I finally got to see this for the first time two years ago! It was my high school graduation present from my parents. I want to see it again so much! I'm so glad that this year they are going to have a 25th anniversary concert in the West End! And my favorite Phantom, Ramin Karimloo, is going to be portraying him in it! If you've never seen him as the Phantom, look him up here on youtube! That's how I discovered him. Even though I've never seen him live, he's still my favorite Phantom! <3
wonderful thank you for posting this....PO was for me the most spectacular lavish musicals I have ever seen twice on the west end and once in south africa...amazing what incredible effects they echieved on a stage without CGI or whatever it is because of this that I feel the film was an utter failure and a mammoth disappointment completely flat and lacking any kind of theatricality...this little snippet reminds me once again why I feel this way...once again thank you
@XxKelseyxX3 it's a body double. after the phantom disappears, the double "reappears" for him at the top of the stairs. kinda takes the magic away knowing, doesn't it?
the rights can't be out....not completely. my old high schools music director had to go to london and negotiate with them the rites which he got. my old high school is the first to get these rites in america and is doing this show in december. So unless someone is lying which could either be one of the ppl on here or one of the directors, none of you are actually doing the show at your high school lol.
@gabsha1 We're doing it for our Winter musical right now. We open in just less than a month actually, and we still have a lot to do. Unfortunately I'm a lowly (is that a word? xD) Freshman so I'm just chorus but it's still a really fun show.
@gabsha1 You're wrong. They were also released to universities and small scale theatres. And thank god for that. The clips I've seen of high school productions have been deplorable.
@InfinitePlaylist909 Well this is the Tour production so he runs off the stage very quickly and in the Broadway production he goes down a trap door which I would really love to try if I was Playing Phantom. =)
@toddcm24 actually the rights are out. both of my local community theatre companys have told everyone. one of our high schools is trying to get the rights. (of course they'll fail) but the rights are out.
yes, i'm 99% sure that Christine is Marni Raab, and 120% certain that it's John Cudia and not Gary. great video, by the way!! could you post more? specifically music of the night, point of no return, and the final lair, if that isn't too much to ask? i would appreciate it very much!!
@elphabaize omg!!! as soon as i heard "Why" immediately I knew it was john cudia!! OMG!! I LOVE HIS VOICE!!! <3 and I never got to see him as Phantom...man it sucks living in SoCal =*(
@ClassicsWEREandARE I kinda know what you mean. But I always thought her costume was such a contrast to the costumes around her. Hers is flowy and feminine when everyone else is a bit harsh and bizarre. It shows she's still young and "newly" in love, delighted to be a princess with her "prince" Raoul.
@phantomofopera91 Definitely the highlight of the show. His high note on Music of the Night almost brought me to tears. He is AMAZING! And he's very nice if you go to the stage door.
when my vocal group went to new york, we got to meet some people from phantom and we got to learn part of the masquerade dance and when we went to the broad way showing of it, just about everyone in our group was dancing along in our with the show. it was great!
@MusicalGirl4983 They are scoping the place out... if you read the book you would know that the phantom always has a lasso and if they ran into the phantom... well that wouldn't be very good would it.
I love this show! Im seeing it again in a few weeks and im waaayy up front, so excited! The move was great, but it's sooo much more moving and amazing in person!
i like how slow this is...especially during the masquerade part. they say it so slow it makes me want to punch myself i PRAY that they fix it when i see it in sept.
It's a truly beautiful piece. FRom a staging standpoint, I bet it's a pain. It's never easy to have that many people on a stage at once, especially since it's so intricate. I'm not too fond of Christine's dress, but I understand why the full skirt is necessary. But then, I hate pink, so it's probably me. :P
@Bremen25 In "Making of the Phantom" they say dummies were used to fill in the space on the staircase. Notice the ones on the side don't move at all. I guess economics controls how many paid players they can afford. It would be fun to use volunteers or students instead.
@PeaceLovePink223
