They did not kiss in the play!!! However, I think the makers of the movie wanted to exaggerate the relationship between the two friends inorder to intensify the tragic effect of Antonio's pain.

I watched this in ninth grade English class. my teacher cut out the bassanio Antonio kiss, but left in the prostitues. Wtf!?!?

Shakespeare's original play is about a wicked jew who tries really hard to murder someone. This jew also chooses ducats (money) over his own daughter!

The movie did not accurately capture Shakespeare's story. The women in the movie were very badly dressed with their breasts and nipples hanging out! Also the ending was completely false with Shylock fishing and daughter looking at him.

However the best part of the movie was Portia's speech on Mercy.

I heard somewhere that they did this because it was by law in Venice that prostitutes [you don't see the 'ladies' with strangers that give money for pleasure] had to wear their clothes with their breasts out to show their state in their economy, just as the Jews had to wear red hats when going out.

No. I think it would have been taboo in Shakespeare's time to write in an actual kiss in the play. This was 1590 after all.
