Same with me, everyone goes on about how chessy and poor this song is compared to all his others, and even Elton himself said it was shit, but I really like it, Its catchy, cute and has an adhesive pop chorus, its a bit of make believe for me. Its Elton playing it safe, and considering he was zonked out on coke and having ongoing problems with the Sun and its libel and eveything else, its actually quite good.
@ zapkvr Elton really did love Renate but he couldn't hide fact he perfered men over women. He married her because she was different and that she liked making music and was able to play the piano. He did have a go at marriage bought her countless gifts of jewelry and clothes. He was just so miserable on drugs he thought marrying this fantastic woman would solve all his problems. And to this day when he talks about it he tears up cause he put her through all that.
leather jackets was a quick slap together album- he was trying to complete a required contract. He simply wanted out- and used a series of discarded tracks from other albums to put together leather jackets. That being said- you can still feel the talent and abilities he has shining through.
Who would have thought that when Elton married Renate that he wasn't really in love and that he really didn't care for girls all that much. I saw this tour with Elton and the ABC Orchestra in 1987 in Melbourne. The show was so good I went back two nights later. Leather packets stank though.
I thought I had seen every Elton video ever made, but I was wrong. I've never seen this one. I've seen video of him singing this song in concert, but not this one. Love the Jacket.
I'm glad this wasn't more popular. I could easily see myself drunkenly karaokeing this otherwise. Meanwhile, I enjoy Davey Johnstone miming rockin' guitar when there is no guitar on this track.
I don't care what Elton says, I was in high school at the height of my fandom, bought the single, the Megamix and I'm willing to concede Leather Jackets was shitty but goddamit this song is epic. I'm glad Eltons off drugs, but he hasnt managed a hook this killer since.
I hear you.....I was the same had Leather Jacket on Cassette...(You remember the breakthrough in portable music in a cassette) but had this on a 12" single extended version which i admit wasnt so portable but it got a fair workout
I remember an interview Elton did with Molly Meldrum and Elton hated this song...He was congratulated on it and he said he didnt care about it he'd just done it for the record company,,,which is sad cause It was always one of favs
I can see that...this was done during his heavy drug period when he wasn't thinking straight and Leather Jackets was done mainly to put out one more album to finish his contract with Geffen. It's also not exactly one of Bernie's best lyrics or Elton's most thoughtful arrangments.
This is the first Elton John song to miss the US top 40 since 1972! It peaked at #55 and I never heard this until now. The song really isn't too bad, not certain as to what happened. I own both the "Top 40 Hits" and "Top Pop Singles". No disrespect at all, really.
Oh, according to the remastered 2L40 album booklet, "he was enjoying a minor hit", so I thought anything that didn't hit top 40 was not even remotely considered a hit, this song is awesome and should have made it
That's because they used the alternate mix which was available as the B-Side to the dance megamix version. So there's actually 3 versions of this song
Does anyone know if this clip was released on video or DVD anywhere? It's one of my favourite Elton songs and yet none of the video channels here in Australia play it in their many 80s hours or Elton marathons...
@fishslacks That is Jody Linscott. She is an in demand percussionist, and did the percussion on the album Leather Jackets where this song is from. She was also part of the Concert for Diana house band.
This studio album was the last one Elton had produced with his longtime producer Gus Dudgeon, whom he hired in 1970 after hearing David Bowie's "Space Oddity."
The only other 1980s Elton studio album that Dudgeon produced was "Ice on Fire," which also was not as big in sales.
I have the dance single. This has the same intro part The Girls,Girls,Girls part and that 1980's drum crash. Never seen the video before. Love the 1930's silent movie bits in it too. Thanks for posting this.
yeah, I got the dance mix on an EP record off of Ebay a few years back and had someone burn it onto CD for me. I like it just as much as the regular version.
I love this song man listen to the leather jackets album again its not that bad there are some good songs on there like this one,Paris,i fall apart, gypsy heart etc.. I think its a good album-each to there own.
That inferior vocal quality can also be heard on his 1987 live album "Live in Australia," which featured the first version of "Candle in the Wind" to chart in the USA, going to #6 in early 1988.
I bought the album Leather Jacket so many years ago, listened to it once and never again after that. Then I saw this video and decided to give it one more try. No, I don't like it. Elton John has written much better music than this.
It is a lesser album from Elton John's collection. In fact, by its sales, ratings, and reviews, this would technically be just about the worst album Elton ever did. Don't get me wrong now, there is quality in the music we got here! There are good songs on here, but the production was very limited. In addition to that, his contract with Geffen Records was coming towards an end, limiting his production time.
Love this song. I was in Highschool when this was released. Here in Australia this was a top ten song & the album Leather Jackets made the top 5 & went platinum. Very underrated album & song.
This is my favorite Elton John song - mainly because I was in Tokyo (he refers to Tokyo in the song) when it came out. I was also girlfriend-less (married with children, plus a bit on the side now) which made the song resonate for me.

@ipbsf You know, I agree: I was about 5 years old when this song came out, and he'd also come down with potential throat cancer.
But, sometimes a great talent like this benefits from tough times, and this song indeed rocks.
I dare you to put it past my 6 year old self.

Elton's voice was about to give out. He had throat pollups that needed surgery to remove later that year.

princette 3 years ago 2
Is this one of EJ's classic songs? NO
Is it dated and cheesy sounding? YES
But...
Is it one of my top ten Elton songs of all times? YES
Why?
It's fun, I was a child of the '80s and currently being single, the lyrics describe my weekends to a T!
