@BigPhil1982 all the horses you mentioned were fabulous, but i agree that Kauto is the best. remember, people, that racing has changed - courses change, rules change, trainers change and horses have different breeding. you can never full compare one horse to another.
however, Kauto has won one more Gold Cup than Desert Orchid and the same number of KG's, plus 4 Betfairs etc. i personally think he's better.
i'm 18, though, and never knew the others horses, Kauto is my generations hero <3
lol, i forgot i'd commented here before. SO GOOD to see him win the Betfair!! <3
i don't know what he should do next... everyone admires the Gold Cup much more than the King George, people are saying skip boxing day and head straight to Cheltenham, but in my heart I think Kauto so just have one crack and the King george then retire. he loves Kempton and it's his race, i think He deserves a chance of a 5th win in it. if he was to win i think he should retire straight away.
Does anyone know if Kauto will race again? I've not kept up to date with any racing news this year. Judging by His last few runs, He looks like He's given up the ghost... He was pulled up! Is He retiring or will He have one more crack at the King George? I'd love to see Him race again, but only if He puts up a fight. I think i'm being selfish, that I want to keep watching Him run and jump when perhaps age has caught up with him.
This race makes my hairs stand on end every time... phenominal <3
@sweetypie000 So lets say we completely ban Horse Racing okay, all well and good for the Horse, are you so arrogant you don't think about all the people that lose their jobs. All the jockeys, All the trainers, All the bookies, All the people that work at Horse Racing meetings and festivals preparing things as well as making food. What about them, are you that arrogant you think we should cost all those people their jobs just in case a horse gets injured. Shit happens, horses get injured, so what
@alexnzxVersion2 The jobs only existed when people started to abuse horses. Talking about 'job loss' is a weak debate and no contender - do try harder.
They are all ponces, getting fat off a creatures misery.
"Arrogant" ? me ? I'm not the one thinking I am better than a horse and wish to take over it's life and do with it as I wish. YOU are arrogant - just like the bookies, jokeys and trainers.
I think we should put a saddle on you and whip you naked around a 2 mile track
@sweetypie000 The debate is a no contender? So this time during a recession more people losing their jobs and going back to their husbands and wives who also don't have jobs, then they are trying to support their children and give them a good education but they CANNOT afford it all because a very small amount of people have no idea about Horse Racing and think it should be banned just so stupid four legged animal doesn't get injured. That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard.
@alexnzxVersion2 "That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard." you said it - most of what you've said has been ridiculous I agree. I appreciate your honesty.
You know, I recon we need more exploited blacks down the diamond and gold mines in Africa because of all the requirements for rings for newly engaged couples. You of course will agree and afterall it gives them blacks 'a job' dosen't it ? Exploitation is exploitation.
@alexnzxVersion2 p.s I noticed you didn't in any way object to putting a "saddle on you and whip you naked around a 2 mile track" I know your kind - panama hat, green corduroys, calf skin shoes, ruddy cheeks and a right plum and yuppie !
@sweetypie000 I have no idea what you just said. Your just too much of a softie, its a horse, if it was human getting whipped around a course it would be another thing. I think you should spend more time trying to help little children starving in africa then you should trying to get horse racing banned. Horse racing will never ever be banned.
@sweetypie000 lol - horse racing will be banned huh? When will this be happening please? Im sure its news to every government in the world. You fucking moron.
@sweetypie000 There is not a ONE motion in ANY parliament in the world to have horse racing banned. It is your deluded hope to have horse racing banned - it will never happen. It brings too much money to the government in terms of taxes, it gives too many people jobs, it's not a bloodsport, it's not done specifically to hurt and kill animals - so comparing it to fox hunting is moronic. I am against fox hunting. You would stop these horses doing what they enjoy & are bred to do? You're an...
@sweetypie000 ...ignorant and clueless retard. I bet you don't know of the hundreds of cases every few years where racehorses are retired to live in a lap of luxury (I bet you haven't seen the facilities for horses going to stud at places like Coolmore or Juddmonte) yet end up depressed because they are no longer in training and running against their friends and family members. I bet you don't know of the hundreds of cases of horses being retired when they don't enjoy racing anymore. You think..
@sweetypie000 ...you could make such a strong and powerful beast run against his/her will? So I guess you don't know of the thousands of cases every year when a horse refuses to race and no matter how hard the jockey pushes and shoves the horse just stands there? As I said, you are fucking clueless. Here's a little tip for you - before entering into a conversation on any given topic, at least have a little bit of knowledge of that given topic, or this happens - you get annihilated & embarrassed.
@sweetypie000 You are a clueless moron. -_- I know people who own racehorse farms.. If a horse won't budge they don't whip the crap out of them like you "say". They will simply try to work with the horse. If the horse still doesn't do anything.. they sell it. I DOUBT they would not run no matter what though because these horses are doing what they love. The ones that are "Destroyed" from this sport died doing the thing they loved and they wouldn't have put it any way else.
all you lot arguing about who is the best horse. just enjoy the quality. they are all legends. ratings differ over the years - impossible to put one ahead of another.
Kauto Star , YEATS , Sea the Stars, Master Minded <<< LEGENDARY HORSES.... always give u a good account n perform to the best of there ability .... imperial commander on the other hand is an absolute flipping donkey
Ill think you will find his place is cemented in history...level if not higher than Dessie! That extra Gold Cup is far better than any Whitbread/National.
The horse that has created history in the two biggest races in the NH calendar is certainly in the top 5 of all time. Its only opinion which puts them in their specific order. Off level weights i think KS beats Dessie at both Kempton and Cheltenham.
But you are i guess entitled to your opinion as well.
@Jamie2462A Kauto Star tried conceding weight twice. Just ten pound to handicapper Lami (who was badly out of form & in decline) & 14lb to veteran Monet's Garden. He scraped home by a short head vs Lami & was beaten comprehensively by Monet's. Desert Orchid conceded 35lb to a Grand National winner & beat it 19l & 28lb to a grade one placed horse & beat it 8l going away. Not to mention countless other weight carrying efforts. Kauto Star has the fight of a kitten!!!
that was early on in kautos career, last few years its been the betfred at haydock or the 3 miler at down royal then king george/gold cup, kauto has not outdone dessie, all hes done is win level weight races, when he runs in a whitbread/racing post chase/national and gives 2 stone + to a decent field then he can join the imortals like dessie, Arkle, burough hill lad
dessie and kauto both won top races over a variety of distances but dessie would do it in the same season, he would win the tingle creek over 2 miles then step up to 3 in the king george, 3 2 in the gold cup and finish the season in the irish national 3 5 or whitbread 3 5 furlongs, kauto won his 2 milers early in his career and has been basically a 3 mile chaser for the last 4 years, he was a versatile horse but not nearly as versatile as dessie who galloped with 6 furlong sprinters at home
@john131349 - Kauto won the tingle creek, king george and Gold Cup in the same season. Back to the Kauto never ran in a handicap thing again. In time you are judged by competing in the pinnicle of your sport. Kauto has outdone Dessie.
The way Kauto has cruised around Kempton from 06-09 there is nothing to suggest he would mess up. He hit one in 06 but never looked like falling. Dessie was prone to the odd mistake as well.
Either way nobody can dispute that both are in the top 5 horses of all time. Nobody can say that one is better than the other with any confidence.
The thing is KS jumping is suspect when he's put under pressure. While Kauto is probably quicker over a flat track Dessie could have slipped the field and jumped him into the ground.
Both great horse and we will never know. Dessie at Kempton though IMO.
Dessies 5:50 was on good to firm ground...Kauto has never ran on good to firm ground you fool. Oh yeah...Long run also ran on good to soft not soft as you suggest. I suggest that makes you a fool.
KS may not be the best now and i can accept that. What i cant accept is people saying he is not in Dessies league, when he is higher ranked and achieved more in the 2 biggest races in the NH calendar. Times do vary slightly on the same ground as its not perfectly accurate. You are funny!
Long runs time was very good. Quicker than KS and far far quicker than Dessie on the same ground. NACARAT is probably a fair comparison on the last 2 KG's.
Hense my Long run is rated 10lbs loower than KS's best on his win. Over 2-3 miles plus oiff level weights, there is nothing to suggest that Dessie beats KS at Cheltenham or Kempton.
@Jamie2462A Desert Orchids 5m 50s after an early crawl DOES suggest he would have the measure of Kauto Star you fool. Nacarat went off too quick in 2009 & faded badly thus you cannot compare his run this year. KS clocked 6m 7s on good to soft....Long Run 6m 3s on SOFT? Which is best??? You Kauto fans cannot handle the fact that KS is no longer top dog & it is quite sad really!
@foriamonlyahorse1 Around Cheltenham Kauto as Dessie's measure that is for sure. Dessie hated Cheltenham and I was there when he won his only Gold Cup and it was a moment I will never forget it was a true testiment to the great grey's courage but Kauto I feel would have had too much class around Cheltenham. You was probably not even a twinkle in your Dad's nackersack when that happened. Its interesting around Kempton as good as Kauto Star as been around that track in years gone by...
@ASupremeOwl What is your problem? I am 42 not a kid gobshite! Kauto Star ain't so good around Cheltenham either...very weak when the going gets tough. Long Run has already eclipsed Kauto Stars best ever run at Kempton. He clocked 6m 3s on SOFT ground when beating Kauto out of sight (KS clocked 6m 7s on good to soft when winning by 36l) . Nicholls has already gone on record saying if all had been well he would not have beaten long Run that day.
@jkamwal2 Unfortunately the handicapper Smith has taken a biased view towards Nicholls horses. Kauto Star has two outstanding performances to his name of which the handicapper rated him a stupid 193 after the 2009 KG win over handicappers...12mth later its 174! The time for that KG was very average for the ground. Best Mate used to swoop late to win his races thus was never going to win by wide margins thus get high handicap marks. As a chaser Best Mate's jumping was sublime - fast, safe & neat.
@jkamwal2 I actually think Best Mates rating of 179 was very fair & correct. I am just a bit concerned with ratings of 170 plus banded about willy nilly nowadays. A 170 rated horse was a rarity. I am also of the belief that Arkles 212 rating is crap too. Does anyone seriously believe Arkle would have given Best Mate, Desert Orchid or Kauto Star two stone & a beating? His times are not superior to those racing today. The whole handicapping system needs looking at again by someone with some savvy!
@foriamonlyahorse11 yes i would agree. They (timeform) said that Best mates rating would have been higher had he raced in more handicaps but he was fragile as a foal also very ill and they wanted to save him for his gold cups. Do you think he would have got four coz im not sure
@foriamonlyahorse1 I think Im leaning more towards Desert Orchid around Kempton. He loved that track and would have been a tough nut to crack even for Kauto's ability. But if Kauto ran like he did in 2009 against Dessie who knows?! Both great great horses and I've been lucky enough to witness both....
@ASupremeOwl There is a civil tongue in your head then?!! Desert Orchid would have nailed Kauto at Kempton as he would have had him under considerable pressure. KS jumping went to pieces when pressured. KS would have had the edge around Cheltenham although Denman probably better suited to Cheltenham than both. KS is a good horse but not as good as some like yourself think....blew hot & cold too often for my liking. Long Run...now you are talking...a serious racehorse!!!
i dont think its possible to get carried away with arkles ratings when he regularly carried huge weights against decent horses and ran them ragged if the handicapper hadnt have been hard on him the opposition wouldnt have even bothered to take him on , not even small fields !!!
The Kauto Star/P.Nicholls fans are deluding themselves. KS was dominant in a very weak 3 mile chase era, the weakest I have known in 35 years. As with Arkle before him, the handicapper got carried away his ratings.
This years winner, Long Run was the first seriously good horse KS has ever faced in his KG efforts. He beat KS with a time of 6m 3s, an amazing effort in soft ground. KS has had things his way beating 150 rated handicpapers but yet again can't deal with the big boys at this level.
this is becoming very boring what is it that a horse who fell when beaten in the gold cup and king george is given such a high status i mean even now there are mugs so blinded by kauto they still think hes better than arkle i have nothing more to say its ridiculous!!!!
@littlebay75 This is becoming boring ? Did you expect to be able put a post belittling Kauto Star's achievements against a video of his greatest performance without attracting the odd dissenting opinion ? And for the record, IMO only a fool would regard Kauto (or Dessie) as better than Arkle.
in his king george wins dessie beat forgive n forget, the fellow 2 gold cup winners, also horses like sabin du loire, kildimo, very promising, seagram, pegwell bay, panto prince and he did beat pearlyman at ascot i think
john 131349 and man utd for life thanx for your comments they are so true .my grandad followed racing and knew racing folk all his life and he said dessies whitbread win was the best he had seen since arkle
@littlebay75 Well if that's true then presumably Kildimo, who was giving Dessie 2lbs and was only beaten a length if memory serves me, was a better horse than Dessie ? His 12 length Tingle Creek win and the Racing Post Chase win giving lumps to Delius were far better form than his Whitbread.
Desert Orchids win in the racing post chase were he carried 12 stone 4 to victory over horses like delius was the best weight carrying performance since Arkles days, he also gave weight and a beating to the top 2 milers and the stayers in the Irish national and whitbread gold cup, i also think Burough Hill Lad would of beaten kauto & denman his henessy win under 12 stone was outstanding, i think thats it now for kauto but it would be interesting if denman was entered in the national
@john131349 That Racing Post Chase win over Delius was amazing, as was his Tingle Creek victory the season before. But I stand by my statement, none of Dessie's 5 wins in GC / KGs come close to this performance. And both Timeform and the Official Handicapper agree with me.
Nothing wrong with Dessies final win in the King George either, despite rising 12 he crushed twice Gold Cup runner up Toby Tobias & Gold Cup winner/dual KG winner The Fellow, among a host of young pretenders.
His amazing performance as a 12 year old when a close 4th in the Victor Chandler afterwards is often forgotten, conceding 17lb to 24lb to much younger Champion chasers elect Katabatic, Young Snugfit & Blitzkrieg.
Amazing horse was Dessie, NOT seen his like since!!!
you are entitled to your opinion but i feel the majority of racing people would disagree the opposition in the days of arkle dessie etc were household names unlike today when most people only know the nicholls pair kauto is a very good horse denman even better but they are not in the league of the big 3
@littlebay75 Who were these household names Dessie raced against ? Pearlyman in the Champion Chase maybe, but he was beaten. Wayward Lad in his first King George maybe, but he was way past his best by then. I can only really think of Barnbrook Again as being top class opposition. I'm certainly not here to slag the Grey Horse off, he gave me some of the best racing memories ever, but based on both Timeform figures and Official Ratings Kauto has faced tougher opposition.
Desert Orchid beat the great Barnbrook Again, Toby Tobias, The Fellow, Yahoo, Seagram, Delius, Pegwell Bay, Kildimo, Panto Prince, Wayward Lad, Bolands Cross, Forgive & Forget, Vodkatini, Cavvies Clown, Charter Party, Carvills Hill, Very Promising, See You Then, Burrough Hill Lad, Door Latch...want some more??? The whos who of 80's /90's racing!
Outisde of Denamn ONCE, name me just three seriously good horses KS has beat? Good luck joker!
@foriamonlyahorse1 The problem with your list of "the who's who of 80s/90s racing" is that there are several horses in there who themselves were nothing more than decent handicappers. Do you really think I would struggle to name 3 horses better than Seagram who KS has beat ?
Fair play, there are at least 5 top class horses in your list (I'm not letting you get away with BHL though, if you mean his Wincanton comeback). But I will give you your list, backed up by official ratings not opinions.
@w869cpa Why pick the only handicapper I mention? Seagram!!! Dessie gave that horse 35lb & a 19l beating yet he was rated higher tahn some of those placed at level weights vs Kauto Star...who incidently has now been 'reassessed' as a 174 rated horse!!!!!!!
OK, if we use 170 as a benchmark of "seriously good" (or tell me what number to use) - Imperial Commander, Official Rating 185. Exotic Dancer, OR 177. Voy Por Ustedes, OR 173. Neptune Collonges, 174. Beef Or Salmon, 174. Our Vic, 171. The Listener, 170. The last two wouldn't fit my definition of "seriously good" but who am I to argue with the Official Handicapper ? So 8 (inc. Denman) > 170.
Not checked but I doubt there are 8 in your list rated > 170.
@w869cpa Your research is poor. Cheltenham specialist IC was rated 174 when 'beaten' at Kempton (nearly fell twice on unsuitable course). Past it Our Vic was rated 163 when 11L 2nd. Glorified handicapper Exotic Dancer was 172. Beef Or Salmon was miles past it!! Do you really think IC is 7lb better than the great Best Mate on ONE GC win? You that gullible?
One fact you omit....THE CLOCK DOESN'T LIE unlike idiot handicappers!
PS. Kauto Star rating now - a more realistic 174!!!
@w869cpa The handicapper has seemed wrapped up in the similar media frenzy that surrounded Arkle in the 60's but at least he had numerous 'impossible' weight carrying efforts to his credit!!
Thus everything that has run within 10l of KS has had to be reassessed thus pushing up ratings to riducullous levels. 175 rated horses were as rare as rocking horse shite now we have a whole bunch of them even after one good run?? Neptunes Collognes a 174 horse...seriously, he is a f***ing plodder!!
@w869cpa Fuck the shite ratings you found..lets look at records of the main horses Dessie beat!! Barnbrook Again 2 CC W; Toby Tobias 2 GC RU; The Fellow 2 KG W 1 GC W 2GC RU; Wayward Lad 3 KG 1 GC RU; Forgive & Forget 1 GC W, Charter Party 1 GC W, 1 GC P. Thats just a few.....
Kauto Star has beaten nothing of note....not a single CHAMPION among them at the time of running...just over-rated horses that the handicapper has had to do to follow the KS hype. IC is good but only @ Cheltenham!!
@foriamonlyahorse1 Its about ratings this sport. Thats why Arkle is rated as the best. As soon as KS got a rating higher than Dessie i knew the Dessie fans would get all defensive. 3 months later IC went on to win the GC and win it well. Our Vic won a Ryanair well the year before. Albertus won went on the win the Ryan air after this.
Some of these are good horses. He not only beat them, he finished in a different time zone!!
@Jamie2462A firstly even Arkle's rating has recently been questioned. He kept beating the same 10 horses, so how do assess how good he was? KS rating above Dessie lasted 3 races!!! He is now rated a just 174! What excuses do you have now? our Vic was never a true 3 miler was too good for KS on one occasion on an easy track. Albertas can't run two races alike. Long Run's time of 6m 3s in SOFT GROUND is OUTSTANDING far superior to anything KS achieved in the race! KS was king in a very weak era!
@foriamonlyahorse1 So a past his best KS is now rated 174 - SO WHAT ? Do you judge all horses historically by their final ratings ? Should we judge Desert Orchid by his last few runs when he was, for example, getting run ragged by Sabin Du Loir ? Or judge Flyingbolt by when he was finishing mid div in h/caps as an 11yo ? Of course not.
I repeat, it's not just the Official H-capper who shares my opinion, Timeform do aswell. Their opinion counts for more than any Youtube posters in my book.
@w869cpa You are missing the point. Kauto Star wasn't being questioned as being in decline by many, especially his fans. He has ONLY JUST turned 11. Dessie was rising 13 when beaten over inadequate trips by a top class horse who was still far more effective at the shorter distances. All KS fans were talking about how far he'd win, but he has never met a horse of Long Run's calibre. Lets wait & see what happens in the Gold Cup...i'd bet on a fall or a pulled up I am afraid!! Sad, but.....
@foriamonlyahorse1 You my friend are a fucking idiot. Kauto Star as beaten horses rated well about 170 plus in races from 2miles to 3 miles. You don't get many horses like that winning grades one over all distances...
@ASupremeOwl Name me a horse that KS has beaten over two miles rated over 170? Screw the stupid ratings Smith dished out (& retracted VERY quickly...193 to 174 in 12 months lol!) Desert Orchid as a TWELVE year old rtan in the Victor Chandler conceding 20lb upwards to the top three in the betting for that years Champion Chase. He was beat less than 6l!!! Conceding just 10lb Kauto Star scraped home against Lami in decline & out of form & was floored by veteran Monets Garden receiving just a stone!
@Frostbite7000 I'd love to see it happen, But the likelyhood is Long Run will have come on a ton for his run in the Betfair Chase and with Kauto a couple of days away from his 12th birthday I doubt is constitution is the same these days. If he can replicate his Betfair run then he will be in with a shout, I doubt Long Run will want to mix it with him too early because we've all seen is jumping can crumble hes just an exceptional stayer with bundles of class. I've backed Master Minded...
@Frostbite7000 purely because if he stays he will give Long Run alot to think about, Its hopeful more than anything but he gets 2 and half easily enough and Paul Nicholls is bullish. I would happily do My money to see Kauto win his 5th King George. He is without doubt the best I've seen in My lifetime and I was around to see the great Desert Orchid. Lets just appreciate a racing legend...
@foriamonlyahorse1 This could go on for ever. Of course I've quoted the peak ratings of IC and others. But are you really going to say, for example, Wayward Lad was at his peak when Dessie beat him in the 86 KG ? You belittle Exotic Dancer as a h/c'er but lets face it, Charter Party was one of the shittest GC winners ever.
I'm not some Johnny-come-lately to the sport. The late 80s was prob the era I followed most closely. But in hindsight I've come to realise it was a weak NH era with 1 star.
@littlebay75 I was Dessie's biggest fan back in the day, but sorry, he never put up any performance in a weight for age race remotely the like of this. NH racing has changed so much in that the top horses (excepting Denman) don't race in handicaps now. Arkle, Flyingbolt, Mill House, Dessie - they all acheived their highest ratings in handicaps. We'll never know what Kauto could have acheived if campaigned the same way, but his demolition of Armaturk in the 06 Old Roan Chase gives an idea.
@w869cpa The problem is there are stupid soft Group 1s that have been created, for instance the Betfair Chase, what a pointless race, all it does is give the good horses an easy race instead of conceeding Top Weight in the Hennessy. Everyone knows its far easier for the likes of Denman, Kauto and Imperial Commander to go for the Betfair Chase and compete for similar prize money to the Hennessy, thats why i always favour Denman as he has always gone the Hennessy route, and won it twice
@MANUTD4LIFE171 I agree to an extent, but all they are doing is trying to create a pattern of level weight races as have existed on the flat since year dot. I know it ruins comparisons with NH champions of the past, but is it really fair to expect top class animals to give lumps away to earn their corn? Nobody would expect Frankel next year to be running round Ascot giving 2 stones away to handicappers. As Luca Cumani once said, handicaps are racings version of communism !
@w869cpa Flat racing and jump racing are worlds apart so im not buying the comparisons, the Hennessy, Grand Nationals and Whitbred are massive races, and any horse that can win those off high handicap marks is very special, the fact remains you only realy find out how good a horse is when it runs in handicaps, the real champions are found in Handicaps and the paper ones are found out. To be considered as one of the greatest staying chasers you need a top weight performance on your CV
sad day today, unable to gain his 5th King George... but hey, 5 would be greedy now, right? he's got 4 in the back already, maybe it's time he hand over his crown. <3
For me I would like to simply wish Kauto Star and his team the very best of luck on boxing day...I was their last year and he is incredibly beautiful to see in the flesh with such beaming eyes...... his best mate Denman had his heart problems and Kauto Star paced his stable up and down and didnt stop untill Denman come home... I could never comp[are these 2 because they are so different and so special at the same time. Lets enjoy that fact and embrace these amazing equines... ride like the wind
@westies07 lol Burton Port 3 mile at Kempton lol hed be more at home in a grand national. Running him against Kauto round Kempton is like running a 6yo girl against Usain Bolt
@PhantomOftheOpera25 i think planet of sound or burton port but really u should just put everything on kauto star at even money he just doesnt get beat around kempton
@frconvey i had him last year to win and the £5 on the forecast but didnt no Madison had come 2nd as was on the phone to me mate (thoght Barber shop come 2nd)until i checked me account later on,but me mate told me the other day ,think its paddy power are doulbing odds for new customers and hes got kauto at 100/30,What a price.
@TheBardyCharver I have not doubted Kauto's greatness...he just isn't a weight carrier like Dessie or Arkle. His opposition in the King george has thus far been weak. Imperial Commander would have been much closer but for that horrendous error, however he is a stayer & this speed track does not suit. One Man won by a massive 6 seconds faster than Kauto thus yes he would have won this by a distance - with or without Kauto in the race you half wit!
@addyginsh Love how you just mention Cheltenham and 'only' two Gold Cups. Yea, lets forget the fact he has won 4 King Georges or 14 Grade Ones, or over £3,000,000 in prize money, or been rated in the 190's, or the fact he has won Grade Ones over 2 mile, 2 1/2 mile, 3 mile and 3 1/4 mile, or the fact he is not ground dependant, or the fact he can do it on flat tracks and undulating tracks, or the fact he can do it left handed and right handed. Yea, in fact, Kauto isn't that good actually, is he?
@cmcgrath10 nice come back, hate theses Kauto haters,no horse can do what he has done and will never do again, just because kauto can't win hadicapps makes him not good,LLLLOOLLL,well can denman win at Kempton? talk about banter between football teams it has started in horse racing.
Imperial Commander was in this race, so was Nacarat. Our Vic was also a very good horse and albertts run went on to win the Ryanair chase.
Imperial Commander is not far rated below Dessie and Kauto is rated...higher. When the ground is the same Kauto's times are simply quicker than Dessies.
Where do you think Dessie would have finished at his peak here. I would like to know. I would say 2nd place!!
@vixitrixalina he always needs his 1st run as i've been at both bet fairs hes won but today his jumping showed that the fall had not left his mark on him, pitty that ruby has broken his leg which will proply rule him out of the hennsessy, just hope ruby gets fit for his 5th King George.Fingers crossed.
@PhantomOftheOpera25 Are they serious about the Hennessy with Kauto Star? I just can't help thinking that this is merely an effort to prove a point that their horse is as good as the handicapper says he is. He is no Desert Orchid. Dessie was hard as nails, unique with limitless courage. I do hope poor Kauto survives this ordeal 3m 2f with 12st+ especially if the race contains the usual progressive chasers. A real bad idea unless the race really cuts up.
@foriamonlyahorse11 i doubt they will go with ruby now proply out for months, they should have done this a couple of years ago,he's not going on to 11,he found giving weight to monets garden hard in the old roan chase, can he give weight to Denman,i doubt it.
@PhantomOftheOpera25 i agree he usually wants a race to wake up after his summer holiday, so to come back winning by 4 lengths was great! he jumped brilliantly, seemed a bit tired but i think he'll improve so much from that, especially round his favourite course in the King George :) but yeh... who should ride? Sam Thomas and McCoy have both ridden him... i vote AP but what do you think?
@vixitrixalina i wouldn't want Ap,would not suit Kauto style,Sam would be better because hes won on the horse and knows him but Timmy Murphy would suit kauto to a tee, nice waiting ride that what kauto needs, his jumping was amazing, usually on his first run he amke the odd mistake but he was perfect all the way around, but Down royal fences don't look as big as haydocks or Kemptons.
AP has ridden Master Minded & Denman but never Kauto Star, Sam Thomas & Mick Fitzgerald are only other Jockeys ever to ride him in the UK when Fitzy won the tingle creek on him. I would be happy to see either of AP or Sam Thomas really though on him he seems straightforward enough of a horse.
i'm interested in forpaddytheplasterer for the 2010 race, his trainer has said that its gonna be his main target this season, i thought he was a 3 mile chaser in the making when he first ran at the cheltenham festival but they brought him back to 2 miles for the arkle then the queen mother last march, he's got a high cruising speed and jumps well he could surprise a few of these plodders
@TheBardyCharver Yours is the silly comment sir! Your ignorance about racing is clear. Kauto Star is the only genuine grade one horse in the race! Dessie lined up against other grade one horses! Imagine what he or One Man would have done to this lot! Imagine what Arkle would have done to Kauto? Lets just enjoy Kauto Star for what he is & keep our feet on the ground.
Why would he not win a Champion Hurdle when around 5 or 6? Around the time he got injured. We will never know but i think he probably could have won all 4 of the big races at his peak. In 2007 he could have won what ever of the big 4 he was entered in. Obviously not in the same year.
Dessie did indeed do it in 5:50secs...on good to firm ground. He did it in 6:04 on good ground, this bettered by Kautos 5:57 on good ground. Dessie also did it in 6:12 on good to soft, this bettered by 6:05,6:07 and 6:09 by Kauto. The other Dessie time i could not find.
@Jamie2462A When Dessie won in 5m50secs there was little pace & it ended up a sprint over the last three fences. Sherwood didn't even need to pick up the whip despite all being ridden to the line. One Man was very quick around Kempton & it must be said both Dessie & One Man beat much better company, although no question about the breath taking manner of this victory by KS.
he looks spectacular in this but what did he beat, imperial commander ran a shocker, the runner up is a handicapper and the queens barber shop hasnt won for about 3 years, as for him being better than dessie has anyone got kautos times for the race i know dessie did it in 5.50 and one man did a 5.45 one year, has kauto broke 6 minutes?
@john131349 Spot on John. People can rant & rave about how far Kauto has won by but times suggest he would not have beaten Dessie or One Man. Not only that but look at what he is beating? An above average handicapper. Dessie beat grade 2/3 class horses & improving top class handicappers OUT OF SIGHT when winning the Racing Post Chase over this C/D giving them all 2st 2lb PLUS! Now that was impressive.
John, we will never know for sure though. In my opinion on this day Kauto Star beats any horse that has ever lived. Just because he does not run in handicaps does'nt make him any worse a horse. You hear the "he could never give weight away and win a top handiccap!!!" I don't give a monkeys...He beat a high class field by 35-100 lengths. Not all of the horses could have had a bad day. Dessie never did it quite like this. As much as Dessie is a great, Kauto simply cruises past him here.
@Jamie2462A He did give weight away and won a big handicap at Sandown- whoever said that to you is a prat! However, when comparing him with Dessie!Dessie was second favourite for a Champion Hurdle and also won an Irish National with top weight. He was every bit as versatile as Kauto Star.Lastly, you can`t compare generations because Dawn Run won both the big ones at Cheltenham(unique) Kauto Star would not win a Champion Hurdle.
@bigphil did you see Dessie run live? he would have done what denman did when he galloped him into submission, kauto looks good when he gets a steady pace and can show his turn of foot but dessie would have beaten him
@BigPhil1982 I think It's gonna be close phil , im going for kauto , Sizing europe should come on alot , Can't wait for the jumps though beats the flat , Fucking new horses every year on the flat then retired a year later , bullshit like , Nothing like national hunt on Boxing day lol
He has achieved more in terms of big races than any national hunt horse since Arkle. His achievements are very similar to that of Arkle. To think he is nearly 2 stone behind Arkle is a bit of a joke. Nothing gives Kauto Star 20lbs and beats it round Kemnpton, just as nothing could beat Denman around Cheltenham giving it 25lbs. So as much as Arkle was amazing i dont think he was as good as his legend is letting it be. Just my opinion.
I have to say I prefer Denman to Kauto if I had to pick, but this really was a class performance from Kauto. They are both champions and I hope they both come back to their bets for the 2011 Gold Cup!
I'm not much of a hurdles or hunt racing fan. I've always been much more of a flat race fan. But I have taken the time to watch some of Kauto Star's races. Incredible!! The stamina this horse has. Still competing at the highest levels at 10 years old now. First or second in 21 of 24 lifetime hunt races. Remarkable. Just like Rite of Passage, because of his stamina from hurdles racing, winning the 2010 Ascot Gold Cup. I'll bet if Kauto Star ran in the Ascot Gold Cup, he'd win the race. JMO.
@GBeret83 It's a shame the 2009 Gold Cup isn't up here because that is one of his best races. I've been following Kauto since 2007 when I got into horse racing and I love him! Nearly screamed myself hoarse during the 2009 Gold Cup and practically cried after the 2010 Gold Cup when he fell.
Arguably the greatest performance ever seen by a racehorse. Other than Denman they were all here, trying as best they could to beat the champ. Just a shame the gold cup was not won by him this year. I dont think ill see anything else as good in my lifetime that will keep me on the edge of my seat like him.
One more KG then retirement into racing immortality i hope
This cheltenham festival 2010 was the most damn rigged and fixed, wholy soly bookies were the incharge, they way they operated simply outstanding.the bets of only Place market on Kauto star,Punchestown, Captain ceebee, and Go native were in millions so one can imagine if KT wouldnt even win it but did managed to get place bookies would have gone bust.the integrity of sport is way damn down the drain, its such a higtech and well organised scam.
@salllu It wasn't rigged. Kauto Star fell, that's the way it goes in racing sometimes. The smart money was always on Imperial Commander at 8-1. A lot of the favourites lost at Cheltenham. The only favourite that was really guaranteed to win was Big Bucks, which it did.
shame King Kauto had to crash out at Cheltenham - he didn't deserve that. but he had nothing to prove- he already won the race twice we already knew he was the best! he never really liked Cheltenham, but he comes to his brilliant best at Kempton, i think he is unbeatable around there! stick Denman and Imperial Comander in this race in 2010 and see them struggle! they go 2mile pace like the Tingle Creek but over 3miles. Kauto has the highest cruising speed ever! x
I think this is the best performance by a horse in the last 30 years plus, the nearest comparison is Captain Christy in this race in the 70s ..i also think the second best steeplechaser of all time behind Arkle
they have started to water gods race course kauto wins and he will have to be compared with himself after, but where does the ew value lie? tricky or cooldine
if mccoy leaves denman to jump himself, he will surely win ,he just has to sit and fiddle and let denman find his only stride,he wont come out of mccoys hands. which is why denman didnt win the aon. look at the vids every one. thanks 4 the vid
People who know very little about horseracing think kauto is better than arkle.Around kempton kauto may have given arkle a race.

Got goosebumps watching this. What a horse Kauto is.
Really hope he performs in the George on Boxing Day. LEGEND
printartistv8 2 months ago 2
lol, i forgot i'd commented here before. SO GOOD to see him win the Betfair!! <3
i don't know what he should do next... everyone admires the Gold Cup much more than the King George, people are saying skip boxing day and head straight to Cheltenham, but in my heart I think Kauto so just have one crack and the King george then retire. he loves Kempton and it's his race, i think He deserves a chance of a 5th win in it. if he was to win i think he should retire straight away.
the King <3
vixitrixalina 3 months ago
Truly one of the greatest horses in history, looks like he's back to his winning ways in the Betfair :) You can't keep a good horse down!
Frostfireglade 3 months ago
He should be racing in the Betfair chase on 19th November
earringlizard 3 months ago
Does anyone know if Kauto will race again? I've not kept up to date with any racing news this year. Judging by His last few runs, He looks like He's given up the ghost... He was pulled up! Is He retiring or will He have one more crack at the King George? I'd love to see Him race again, but only if He puts up a fight. I think i'm being selfish, that I want to keep watching Him run and jump when perhaps age has caught up with him.
This race makes my hairs stand on end every time... phenominal <3

RIP Rewilding
It is not good enough so many horses die in this sport. England has no consideration for these poor animals forced to do this barbaric 'sport'.
It is not good enough these horses are used for high priced sports and when they break a leg are destroyed and cast off.
Money is, as usual, taking preference over moral decency and animal welfare.
There have been something like a minimum 500 deaths of horses on UK horse tracks this year alone
Animal abuse absolutely.
sweetypie000 7 months ago
@sweetypie000 Okay shit happens. People die in car accidents every year, does that make driving a car human abuse?
alexnzxVersion2 7 months ago
@alexnzxVersion2 driving a car is someones choice, having a saddle shoved on them and whipped to exhaustion is not the horses choice.
You can't win, give it up fella
sweetypie000 7 months ago
@sweetypie000 So lets say we completely ban Horse Racing okay, all well and good for the Horse, are you so arrogant you don't think about all the people that lose their jobs. All the jockeys, All the trainers, All the bookies, All the people that work at Horse Racing meetings and festivals preparing things as well as making food. What about them, are you that arrogant you think we should cost all those people their jobs just in case a horse gets injured. Shit happens, horses get injured, so what
alexnzxVersion2 7 months ago
@alexnzxVersion2 The jobs only existed when people started to abuse horses. Talking about 'job loss' is a weak debate and no contender - do try harder.
They are all ponces, getting fat off a creatures misery.
"Arrogant" ? me ? I'm not the one thinking I am better than a horse and wish to take over it's life and do with it as I wish. YOU are arrogant - just like the bookies, jokeys and trainers.
I think we should put a saddle on you and whip you naked around a 2 mile track
sweetypie000 7 months ago
@sweetypie000 The debate is a no contender? So this time during a recession more people losing their jobs and going back to their husbands and wives who also don't have jobs, then they are trying to support their children and give them a good education but they CANNOT afford it all because a very small amount of people have no idea about Horse Racing and think it should be banned just so stupid four legged animal doesn't get injured. That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard.
alexnzxVersion2 7 months ago
@alexnzxVersion2 "That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard." you said it - most of what you've said has been ridiculous I agree. I appreciate your honesty.
You know, I recon we need more exploited blacks down the diamond and gold mines in Africa because of all the requirements for rings for newly engaged couples. You of course will agree and afterall it gives them blacks 'a job' dosen't it ? Exploitation is exploitation.
Good boy, now, go get some rest
:)

@alexnzxVersion2 p.s I noticed you didn't in any way object to putting a "saddle on you and whip you naked around a 2 mile track" I know your kind - panama hat, green corduroys, calf skin shoes, ruddy cheeks and a right plum and yuppie !
sweetypie000 7 months ago
@sweetypie000 I have no idea what you just said. Your just too much of a softie, its a horse, if it was human getting whipped around a course it would be another thing. I think you should spend more time trying to help little children starving in africa then you should trying to get horse racing banned. Horse racing will never ever be banned.
alexnzxVersion2 7 months ago
@alexnzxVersion2 horse racing WILL be banned :)
and you still haven't denied you want to be whipped naked around a racetrack.
Anwayz, I don't talk to people involved with animal cruelty so bye.

@sweetypie000 There is not a ONE motion in ANY parliament in the world to have horse racing banned. It is your deluded hope to have horse racing banned - it will never happen. It brings too much money to the government in terms of taxes, it gives too many people jobs, it's not a bloodsport, it's not done specifically to hurt and kill animals - so comparing it to fox hunting is moronic. sweetypie000 6 months ago

TissuePrices 11 months ago
Ill think you will find his place is cemented in history...level if not higher than Dessie! That extra Gold Cup is far better than any Whitbread/National.
The horse that has created history in the two biggest races in the NH calendar is certainly in the top 5 of all time. Its only opinion which puts them in their specific order. Off level weights i think KS beats Dessie at both Kempton and Cheltenham.
But you are i guess entitled to your opinion as well.
Jamie2462A 11 months ago
@Jamie2462A Kauto Star tried conceding weight twice. Just ten pound to handicapper Lami (who was badly out of form & in decline) & 14lb to veteran Monet's Garden. He scraped home by a short head vs Lami & was beaten comprehensively by Monet's. Desert Orchid conceded 35lb to a Grand National winner & beat it 19l & 28lb to a grade one placed horse & beat it 8l going away. Not to mention countless other weight carrying efforts. Kauto Star has the fight of a kitten!!!
foriamonlyahorse11 11 months ago
that was early on in kautos career, last few years its been the betfred at haydock or the 3 miler at down royal then king george/gold cup, kauto has not outdone dessie, all hes done is win level weight races, when he runs in a whitbread/racing post chase/national and gives 2 stone + to a decent field then he can join the imortals like dessie, Arkle, burough hill lad
john131349 11 months ago
dessie and kauto both won top races over a variety of distances but dessie would do it in the same season, he would win the tingle creek over 2 miles then step up to 3 in the king george, 3 2 in the gold cup and finish the season in the irish national 3 5 or whitbread 3 5 furlongs, kauto won his 2 milers early in his career and has been basically a 3 mile chaser for the last 4 years, he was a versatile horse but not nearly as versatile as dessie who galloped with 6 furlong sprinters at home
john131349 1 year ago
@john131349 - Kauto won the tingle creek, king george and Gold Cup in the same season. Back to the Kauto never ran in a handicap thing again. In time you are judged by competing in the pinnicle of your sport. Kauto has outdone Dessie.
Nothing makes Dessie any better that Kauto
Jamie2462A 11 months ago
The way Kauto has cruised around Kempton from 06-09 there is nothing to suggest he would mess up. He hit one in 06 but never looked like falling. Dessie was prone to the odd mistake as well.
Either way nobody can dispute that both are in the top 5 horses of all time. Nobody can say that one is better than the other with any confidence.
Jamie2462A 1 year ago
@Jamie2462A Fair comment.
foriamonlyahorse11 11 months ago
The thing is KS jumping is suspect when he's put under pressure. While Kauto is probably quicker over a flat track Dessie could have slipped the field and jumped him into the ground.
Both great horse and we will never know. Dessie at Kempton though IMO.
noblewestham 1 year ago
Dessies 5:50 was on good to firm ground...Kauto has never ran on good to firm ground you fool. Oh yeah...Long run also ran on good to soft not soft as you suggest. I suggest that makes you a fool.
KS may not be the best now and i can accept that. What i cant accept is people saying he is not in Dessies league, when he is higher ranked and achieved more in the 2 biggest races in the NH calendar. Times do vary slightly on the same ground as its not perfectly accurate. You are funny!
Jamie2462A 1 year ago
Long runs time was very good. Quicker than KS and far far quicker than Dessie on the same ground. NACARAT is probably a fair comparison on the last 2 KG's.
Hense my Long run is rated 10lbs loower than KS's best on his win. Over 2-3 miles plus oiff level weights, there is nothing to suggest that Dessie beats KS at Cheltenham or Kempton.
Jamie2462A 1 year ago
@Jamie2462A Desert Orchids 5m 50s after an early crawl DOES suggest he would have the measure of Kauto Star you fool. Nacarat went off too quick in 2009 & faded badly thus you cannot compare his run this year. KS clocked 6m 7s on good to soft....Long Run 6m 3s on SOFT? Which is best??? You Kauto fans cannot handle the fact that KS is no longer top dog & it is quite sad really!
foriamonlyahorse1 1 year ago
@foriamonlyahorse1 Around Cheltenham Kauto as Dessie's measure that is for sure. Dessie hated Cheltenham and I was there when he won his only Gold Cup and it was a moment I will never forget it was a true testiment to the great grey's courage but Kauto I feel would have had too much class around Cheltenham. You was probably not even a twinkle in your Dad's nackersack when that happened. Its interesting around Kempton as good as Kauto Star as been around that track in years gone by...
ASupremeOwl 11 months ago
@ASupremeOwl What is your problem? I am 42 not a kid gobshite! Kauto Star ain't so good around Cheltenham either...very weak when the going gets tough. Long Run has already eclipsed Kauto Stars best ever run at Kempton. He clocked 6m 3s on SOFT ground when beating Kauto out of sight (KS clocked 6m 7s on good to soft when winning by 36l) . Nicholls has already gone on record saying if all had been well he would not have beaten long Run that day.
foriamonlyahorse11 11 months ago
@foriamonlyahorse1 Can anyone tell me why Best Mate has such a low Timeform rating compared to KS etc?
jkamwal2 11 months ago
@jkamwal2 Unfortunately the handicapper Smith has taken a biased view towards Nicholls horses. Kauto Star has two outstanding performances to his name of which the handicapper rated him a stupid 193 after the 2009 KG win over handicappers...12mth later its 174! The time for that KG was very average for the ground. Best Mate used to swoop late to win his races thus was never going to win by wide margins thus get high handicap marks. As a chaser Best Mate's jumping was sublime - fast, safe & neat.
foriamonlyahorse11 11 months ago
@foriamonlyahorse11 So Best Mate deserved a higher handicap you reckon
jkamwal2 11 months ago
@jkamwal2 I actually think Best Mates rating of 179 was very fair & correct. I am just a bit concerned with ratings of 170 plus banded about willy nilly nowadays. A 170 rated horse was a rarity. I am also of the belief that Arkles 212 rating is crap too. Does anyone seriously believe Arkle would have given Best Mate, Desert Orchid or Kauto Star two stone & a beating? His times are not superior to those racing today. The whole handicapping system needs looking at again by someone with some savvy!
foriamonlyahorse11 11 months ago
@foriamonlyahorse11 yes i would agree. They (timeform) said that Best mates rating would have been higher had he raced in more handicaps but he was fragile as a foal also very ill and they wanted to save him for his gold cups. Do you think he would have got four coz im not sure
jkamwal2 11 months ago
@jkamwal2 We will never know. He had nothing else to prove after winning three Gold Cups with ease.
foriamonlyahorse11 10 months ago
@foriamonlyahorse1 I think Im leaning more towards Desert Orchid around Kempton. He loved that track and would have been a tough nut to crack even for Kauto's ability. But if Kauto ran like he did in 2009 against Dessie who knows?! Both great great horses and I've been lucky enough to witness both....
ASupremeOwl 11 months ago
@ASupremeOwl There is a civil tongue in your head then?!! Desert Orchid would have nailed Kauto at Kempton as he would have had him under considerable pressure. KS jumping went to pieces when pressured. KS would have had the edge around Cheltenham although Denman probably better suited to Cheltenham than both. KS is a good horse but not as good as some like yourself think....blew hot & cold too often for my liking. Long Run...now you are talking...a serious racehorse!!!
foriamonlyahorse11 11 months ago
i dont think its possible to get carried away with arkles ratings when he regularly carried huge weights against decent horses and ran them ragged if the handicapper hadnt have been hard on him the opposition wouldnt have even bothered to take him on , not even small fields !!!
littlebay75 1 year ago
The Kauto Star/P.Nicholls fans are deluding themselves. KS was dominant in a very weak 3 mile chase era, the weakest I have known in 35 years. As with Arkle before him, the handicapper got carried away his ratings.
This years winner, Long Run was the first seriously good horse KS has ever faced in his KG efforts. He beat KS with a time of 6m 3s, an amazing effort in soft ground. KS has had things his way beating 150 rated handicpapers but yet again can't deal with the big boys at this level.
foriamonlyahorse1 1 year ago
this is becoming very boring what is it that a horse who fell when beaten in the gold cup and king george is given such a high status i mean even now there are mugs so blinded by kauto they still think hes better than arkle i have nothing more to say its ridiculous!!!!
littlebay75 1 year ago
@littlebay75 This is becoming boring ? Did you expect to be able put a post belittling Kauto Star's achievements against a video of his greatest performance without attracting the odd dissenting opinion ? And for the record, IMO only a fool would regard Kauto (or Dessie) as better than Arkle.
w869cpa 1 year ago
in his king george wins dessie beat forgive n forget, the fellow 2 gold cup winners, also horses like sabin du loire, kildimo, very promising, seagram, pegwell bay, panto prince and he did beat pearlyman at ascot i think
john131349 1 year ago
john 131349 and man utd for life thanx for your comments they are so true .my grandad followed racing and knew racing folk all his life and he said dessies whitbread win was the best he had seen since arkle
littlebay75 1 year ago
@littlebay75 Well if that's true then presumably Kildimo, who was giving Dessie 2lbs and was only beaten a length if memory serves me, was a better horse than Dessie ? His 12 length Tingle Creek win and the Racing Post Chase win giving lumps to Delius were far better form than his Whitbread.
w869cpa 1 year ago
Desert Orchids win in the racing post chase were he carried 12 stone 4 to victory over horses like delius was the best weight carrying performance since Arkles days, he also gave weight and a beating to the top 2 milers and the stayers in the Irish national and whitbread gold cup, i also think Burough Hill Lad would of beaten kauto & denman his henessy win under 12 stone was outstanding, i think thats it now for kauto but it would be interesting if denman was entered in the national
john131349 1 year ago
@john131349 That Racing Post Chase win over Delius was amazing, as was his Tingle Creek victory the season before. But I stand by my statement, none of Dessie's 5 wins in GC / KGs come close to this performance. And both Timeform and the Official Handicapper agree with me.
w869cpa 1 year ago
Nothing wrong with Dessies final win in the King George either, despite rising 12 he crushed twice Gold Cup runner up Toby Tobias & Gold Cup winner/dual KG winner The Fellow, among a host of young pretenders.
His amazing performance as a 12 year old when a close 4th in the Victor Chandler afterwards is often forgotten, conceding 17lb to 24lb to much younger Champion chasers elect Katabatic, Young Snugfit & Blitzkrieg.
Amazing horse was Dessie, NOT seen his like since!!!
foriamonlyahorse1 1 year ago
you are entitled to your opinion but i feel the majority of racing people would disagree the opposition in the days of arkle dessie etc were household names unlike today when most people only know the nicholls pair kauto is a very good horse denman even better but they are not in the league of the big 3
littlebay75 1 year ago
@littlebay75 Who were these household names Dessie raced against ? Pearlyman in the Champion Chase maybe, but he was beaten. Wayward Lad in his first King George maybe, but he was way past his best by then. I can only really think of Barnbrook Again as being top class opposition. I'm certainly not here to slag the Grey Horse off, he gave me some of the best racing memories ever, but based on both Timeform figures and Official Ratings Kauto has faced tougher opposition.
w869cpa 1 year ago
@w869cpa LMAO - typical Nicholls sycophant!!!
Good luck joker!
foriamonlyahorse1 1 year ago
@foriamonlyahorse1 The problem with your list of "the who's who of 80s/90s racing" is that there are several horses in there who themselves were nothing more than decent handicappers. Do you really think I would struggle to name 3 horses better than Seagram who KS has beat ?
Fair play, there are at least 5 top class horses in your list (I'm not letting you get away with BHL though, if you mean his Wincanton comeback). But I will give you your list, backed up by official ratings not opinions.
w869cpa 1 year ago
@w869cpa Why pick the only handicapper I mention? Seagram!!! Dessie gave that horse 35lb & a 19l beating yet he was rated higher tahn some of those placed at level weights vs Kauto Star...who incidently has now been 'reassessed' as a 174 rated horse!!!!!!!
foriamonlyahorse1 1 year ago
@foriamonlyahorse1
Not checked but I doubt there are 8 in your list rated > 170.
w869cpa 1 year ago
@w869cpa Your research is poor. Cheltenham specialist IC was rated 174 when 'beaten' at Kempton (nearly fell twice on unsuitable course). Past it Our Vic was rated 163 when 11L 2nd. Glorified handicapper Exotic Dancer was 172. Beef Or Salmon was miles past it!! Do you really think IC is 7lb better than the great Best Mate on ONE GC win? You that gullible?
One fact you omit....THE CLOCK DOESN'T LIE unlike idiot handicappers!
PS. Kauto Star rating now - a more realistic 174!!!
foriamonlyahorse1 1 year ago
@w869cpa The handicapper has seemed wrapped up in the similar media frenzy that surrounded Arkle in the 60's but at least he had numerous 'impossible' weight carrying efforts to his credit!!
Thus everything that has run within 10l of KS has had to be reassessed thus pushing up ratings to riducullous levels. 175 rated horses were as rare as rocking horse shite now we have a whole bunch of them even after one good run?? Neptunes Collognes a 174 horse...seriously, he is a f***ing plodder!!
foriamonlyahorse1 1 year ago
IC is good but only @ Cheltenham!!
foriamonlyahorse1 1 year ago
@foriamonlyahorse1 Its about ratings this sport. Thats why Arkle is rated as the best. As soon as KS got a rating higher than Dessie i knew the Dessie fans would get all defensive. 3 months later IC went on to win the GC and win it well. Our Vic won a Ryanair well the year before. Albertus won went on the win the Ryan air after this.
Some of these are good horses. He not only beat them, he finished in a different time zone!!
Jamie2462A 1 year ago
@Jamie2462A firstly even Arkle's rating has recently been questioned. He kept beating the same 10 horses, so how do assess how good he was? KS rating above Dessie lasted 3 races!!! He is now rated a just 174! What excuses do you have now? our Vic was never a true 3 miler was too good for KS on one occasion on an easy track. Albertas can't run two races alike. Long Run's time of 6m 3s in SOFT GROUND is OUTSTANDING far superior to anything KS achieved in the race! KS was king in a very weak era!
foriamonlyahorse1 1 year ago
@foriamonlyahorse1 So a past his best KS is now rated 174 - SO WHAT ? Do you judge all horses historically by their final ratings ? Should we judge Desert Orchid by his last few runs when he was, for example, getting run ragged by Sabin Du Loir ? Or judge Flyingbolt by when he was finishing mid div in h/caps as an 11yo ? Of course not.
I repeat, it's not just the Official H-capper who shares my opinion, Timeform do aswell. Their opinion counts for more than any Youtube posters in my book.
w869cpa 1 year ago
@w869cpa You are missing the point. Kauto Star wasn't being questioned as being in decline by many, especially his fans. He has ONLY JUST turned 11. Dessie was rising 13 when beaten over inadequate trips by a top class horse who was still far more effective at the shorter distances. All KS fans were talking about how far he'd win, but he has never met a horse of Long Run's calibre. Lets wait & see what happens in the Gold Cup...i'd bet on a fall or a pulled up I am afraid!! Sad, but.....
foriamonlyahorse1 1 year ago
@foriamonlyahorse1 You my friend are a fucking idiot. Kauto Star as beaten horses rated well about 170 plus in races from 2miles to 3 miles. You don't get many horses like that winning grades one over all distances...
ASupremeOwl 1 year ago 15
@ASupremeOwl Name me a horse that KS has beaten over two miles rated over 170? Screw the stupid ratings Smith dished out (& retracted VERY quickly...193 to 174 in 12 months lol!) Desert Orchid as a TWELVE year old rtan in the Victor Chandler conceding 20lb upwards to the top three in the betting for that years Champion Chase. He was beat less than 6l!!! Conceding just 10lb Kauto Star scraped home against Lami in decline & out of form & was floored by veteran Monets Garden receiving just a stone!
foriamonlyahorse11 11 months ago
@ASupremeOwl do you thin kauto will win the king george on boxing day ?
Frostbite7000 2 months ago
@Frostbite7000 I'd love to see it happen, But the likelyhood is Long Run will have come on a ton for his run in the Betfair Chase and with Kauto a couple of days away from his 12th birthday I doubt is constitution is the same these days. If he can replicate his Betfair run then he will be in with a shout, I doubt Long Run will want to mix it with him too early because we've all seen is jumping can crumble hes just an exceptional stayer with bundles of class. I've backed Master Minded...
ASupremeOwl 2 months ago
@Frostbite7000 purely because if he stays he will give Long Run alot to think about, Its hopeful more than anything but he gets 2 and half easily enough and Paul Nicholls is bullish. I would happily do My money to see Kauto win his 5th King George. He is without doubt the best I've seen in My lifetime and I was around to see the great Desert Orchid. Lets just appreciate a racing legend...
ASupremeOwl 2 months ago 2
@foriamonlyahorse1 This could go on for ever. Of course I've quoted the peak ratings of IC and others. But are you really going to say, for example, Wayward Lad was at his peak when Dessie beat him in the 86 KG ? You belittle Exotic Dancer as a h/c'er but lets face it, Charter Party was one of the shittest GC winners ever.
I'm not some Johnny-come-lately to the sport. The late 80s was prob the era I followed most closely. But in hindsight I've come to realise it was a weak NH era with 1 star.
w869cpa 1 year ago
kauto star is a very good horse but please can we now put to bed once and for all he is as good as arkle or mill house or desert orchid
littlebay75 1 year ago
@littlebay75 I was Dessie's biggest fan back in the day, but sorry, he never put up any performance in a weight for age race remotely the like of this. NH racing has changed so much in that the top horses (excepting Denman) don't race in handicaps now. Arkle, Flyingbolt, Mill House, Dessie - they all acheived their highest ratings in handicaps. We'll never know what Kauto could have acheived if campaigned the same way, but his demolition of Armaturk in the 06 Old Roan Chase gives an idea.
w869cpa 1 year ago
@w869cpa The problem is there are stupid soft Group 1s that have been created, for instance the Betfair Chase, what a pointless race, all it does is give the good horses an easy race instead of conceeding Top Weight in the Hennessy. Everyone knows its far easier for the likes of Denman, Kauto and Imperial Commander to go for the Betfair Chase and compete for similar prize money to the Hennessy, thats why i always favour Denman as he has always gone the Hennessy route, and won it twice
MANUTD4LIFE171 1 year ago
@MANUTD4LIFE171 I agree to an extent, but all they are doing is trying to create a pattern of level weight races as have existed on the flat since year dot. I know it ruins comparisons with NH champions of the past, but is it really fair to expect top class animals to give lumps away to earn their corn? Nobody would expect Frankel next year to be running round Ascot giving 2 stones away to handicappers. As Luca Cumani once said, handicaps are racings version of communism !
w869cpa 1 year ago
@w869cpa Flat racing and jump racing are worlds apart so im not buying the comparisons, the Hennessy, Grand Nationals and Whitbred are massive races, and any horse that can win those off high handicap marks is very special, the fact remains you only realy find out how good a horse is when it runs in handicaps, the real champions are found in Handicaps and the paper ones are found out. To be considered as one of the greatest staying chasers you need a top weight performance on your CV

PhantomOftheOpera25 1 year ago
@TheBardyCharver I have not doubted Kauto's greatness...he just isn't a weight carrier like Dessie or Arkle. His opposition in the King george has thus far been weak. Imperial Commander would have been much closer but for that horrendous error, however he is a stayer & this speed track does not suit. One Man won by a massive 6 seconds faster than Kauto thus yes he would have won this by a distance - with or without Kauto in the race you half wit!
foriamonlyahorse11 1 year ago
@addyginsh Love how you just mention Cheltenham and 'only' two Gold Cups. Yea, lets forget the fact he has won 4 King Georges or 14 Grade Ones, or over £3,000,000 in prize money, or been rated in the 190's, or the fact he has won Grade Ones over 2 mile, 2 1/2 mile, 3 mile and 3 1/4 mile, or the fact he is not ground dependant, or the fact he can do it on flat tracks and undulating tracks, or the fact he can do it left handed and right handed. Yea, in fact, Kauto isn't that good actually, is he?
cmcgrath10 1 year ago
@cmcgrath10 nice come back, hate theses Kauto haters,no horse can do what he has done and will never do again, just because kauto can't win hadicapps makes him not good,LLLLOOLLL,well can denman win at Kempton? talk about banter between football teams it has started in horse racing.
PhantomOftheOpera25 1 year ago
I genuinely cannot wait for Boxing Day - the cheers that go up from the crowd at Kempton when he gets over the last two fences are amazing.
dixhuitstone 1 year ago
Imperial Commander was in this race, so was Nacarat. Our Vic was also a very good horse and albertts run went on to win the Ryanair chase.
Imperial Commander is not far rated below Dessie and Kauto is rated...higher. When the ground is the same Kauto's times are simply quicker than Dessies.
Where do you think Dessie would have finished at his peak here. I would like to know. I would say 2nd place!!
Jamie2462A 1 year ago
brilliant at Down Royal today - his first race back and he won by about 4 lengths!! can't wait for Kempton now :)
vixitrixalina 1 year ago
@vixitrixalina he always needs his 1st run as i've been at both bet fairs hes won but today his jumping showed that the fall had not left his mark on him, pitty that ruby has broken his leg which will proply rule him out of the hennsessy, just hope ruby gets fit for his 5th King George.Fingers crossed.
PhantomOftheOpera25 1 year ago
@PhantomOftheOpera25 Are they serious about the Hennessy with Kauto Star? I just can't help thinking that this is merely an effort to prove a point that their horse is as good as the handicapper says he is. He is no Desert Orchid. Dessie was hard as nails, unique with limitless courage. I do hope poor Kauto survives this ordeal 3m 2f with 12st+ especially if the race contains the usual progressive chasers. A real bad idea unless the race really cuts up.
foriamonlyahorse11 1 year ago
@foriamonlyahorse11 i doubt they will go with ruby now proply out for months, they should have done this a couple of years ago,he's not going on to 11,he found giving weight to monets garden hard in the old roan chase, can he give weight to Denman,i doubt it.
PhantomOftheOpera25 1 year ago
@PhantomOftheOpera25 i agree he usually wants a race to wake up after his summer holiday, so to come back winning by 4 lengths was great! he jumped brilliantly, seemed a bit tired but i think he'll improve so much from that, especially round his favourite course in the King George :) but yeh... who should ride? Sam Thomas and McCoy have both ridden him... i vote AP but what do you think?
vixitrixalina 1 year ago
@vixitrixalina i wouldn't want Ap,would not suit Kauto style,Sam would be better because hes won on the horse and knows him but Timmy Murphy would suit kauto to a tee, nice waiting ride that what kauto needs, his jumping was amazing, usually on his first run he amke the odd mistake but he was perfect all the way around, but Down royal fences don't look as big as haydocks or Kemptons.
PhantomOftheOpera25 1 year ago
AP has ridden Master Minded & Denman but never Kauto Star, Sam Thomas & Mick Fitzgerald are only other Jockeys ever to ride him in the UK when Fitzy won the tingle creek on him. I would be happy to see either of AP or Sam Thomas really though on him he seems straightforward enough of a horse.
jonnybeeston 1 year ago
i'm interested in forpaddytheplasterer for the 2010 race, his trainer has said that its gonna be his main target this season, i thought he was a 3 mile chaser in the making when he first ran at the cheltenham festival but they brought him back to 2 miles for the arkle then the queen mother last march, he's got a high cruising speed and jumps well he could surprise a few of these plodders
john131349 1 year ago
@TheBardyCharver Yours is the silly comment sir! Your ignorance about racing is clear. Kauto Star is the only genuine grade one horse in the race! Dessie lined up against other grade one horses! Imagine what he or One Man would have done to this lot! Imagine what Arkle would have done to Kauto? Lets just enjoy Kauto Star for what he is & keep our feet on the ground.
foriamonlyahorse11 1 year ago
The best performance of a race horse i've seen, had kauto to win and the forecast.
Kauto will not have his own way this year but i hope he gets win No 5 and get a rating of 200+
PhantomOftheOpera25 1 year ago
Why would he not win a Champion Hurdle when around 5 or 6? Around the time he got injured. We will never know but i think he probably could have won all 4 of the big races at his peak. In 2007 he could have won what ever of the big 4 he was entered in. Obviously not in the same year.
So who beats him in the big 4 in 2007?
Jamie2462A 1 year ago
Dessie did indeed do it in 5:50secs...on good to firm ground. He did it in 6:04 on good ground, this bettered by Kautos 5:57 on good ground. Dessie also did it in 6:12 on good to soft, this bettered by 6:05,6:07 and 6:09 by Kauto. The other Dessie time i could not find.
Jamie2462A 1 year ago
@Jamie2462A When Dessie won in 5m50secs there was little pace & it ended up a sprint over the last three fences. Sherwood didn't even need to pick up the whip despite all being ridden to the line. One Man was very quick around Kempton & it must be said both Dessie & One Man beat much better company, although no question about the breath taking manner of this victory by KS.
foriamonlyahorse11 1 year ago
he looks spectacular in this but what did he beat, imperial commander ran a shocker, the runner up is a handicapper and the queens barber shop hasnt won for about 3 years, as for him being better than dessie has anyone got kautos times for the race i know dessie did it in 5.50 and one man did a 5.45 one year, has kauto broke 6 minutes?
john131349 1 year ago
@john131349 Spot on John. People can rant & rave about how far Kauto has won by but times suggest he would not have beaten Dessie or One Man. Not only that but look at what he is beating? An above average handicapper. Dessie beat grade 2/3 class horses & improving top class handicappers OUT OF SIGHT when winning the Racing Post Chase over this C/D giving them all 2st 2lb PLUS! Now that was impressive.
foriamonlyahorse11 1 year ago
John, we will never know for sure though. In my opinion on this day Kauto Star beats any horse that has ever lived. Just because he does not run in handicaps does'nt make him any worse a horse. You hear the "he could never give weight away and win a top handiccap!!!" I don't give a monkeys...He beat a high class field by 35-100 lengths. Not all of the horses could have had a bad day. Dessie never did it quite like this. As much as Dessie is a great, Kauto simply cruises past him here.
Jamie2462A 1 year ago 2
@Jamie2462A He did give weight away and won a big handicap at Sandown- whoever said that to you is a prat! However, when comparing him with Dessie!Dessie was second favourite for a Champion Hurdle and also won an Irish National with top weight. He was every bit as versatile as Kauto Star.Lastly, you can`t compare generations because Dawn Run won both the big ones at Cheltenham(unique) Kauto Star would not win a Champion Hurdle.

4743stephenf 1 year ago
He has achieved more in terms of big races than any national hunt horse since Arkle. His achievements are very similar to that of Arkle. To think he is nearly 2 stone behind Arkle is a bit of a joke. Nothing gives Kauto Star 20lbs and beats it round Kemnpton, just as nothing could beat Denman around Cheltenham giving it 25lbs. So as much as Arkle was amazing i dont think he was as good as his legend is letting it be. Just my opinion.
Jamie2462A 1 year ago

This cheltenham festival 2010 was the most damn rigged and fixed, wholy soly bookies were the incharge, they way they operated simply outstanding.the bets of only Place market on Kauto star,Punchestown, Captain ceebee, and Go native were in millions so one can imagine if KT wouldnt even win it but did managed to get place bookies would have gone bust.the integrity of sport is way damn down the drain, its such a higtech and well organised scam.
salllu 1 year ago
@salllu It wasn't rigged. Kauto Star fell, that's the way it goes in racing sometimes. The smart money was always on Imperial Commander at 8-1. A lot of the favourites lost at Cheltenham. The only favourite that was really guaranteed to win was Big Bucks, which it did.
debevecisback 1 year ago
shame King Kauto had to crash out at Cheltenham - he didn't deserve that. but he had nothing to prove- he already won the race twice we already knew he was the best! he never really liked Cheltenham, but he comes to his brilliant best at Kempton, i think he is unbeatable around there! stick Denman and Imperial Comander in this race in 2010 and see them struggle! they go 2mile pace like the Tingle Creek but over 3miles. Kauto has the highest cruising speed ever! x
