Never understood this.. how can Thom be Merles Travis's s with the last name of Bresh?? Is it Thom Bresh-Travis ie his stepfather re's referring to?

it's not disgraceful - they didnt TELL him Merle was his dad till Thom was a grown man. I believe they were neighbors, and Thom's mom (Mrs. Bresh) had a little fling with Merle and Thom came out about 9 months later. It was a different world back in those days, stuff like that didnt get talked about.

No intelligent musician would encourage their child to follow their career path.

They pray the dreaded Musician-X-Gene was not inherited by their offspring. A Musicians life is an extremely hard, unpredictable, life.

Our kids should go to university and become doctors/pastors/whatever, anything other than musicians. In the only way he knew, Merle was being kind.

So in your perfect world there would be no musicians hence no music, Ok that sounds like a terrible existence. What if you didn't inherit a good fiming eye from your parents, a director is just as risky a career.

Sadly, most musicians don't make it big time. How many years of college it takes to become a brain surgeon. Let's say 10 years?

Most musicians who've studied/performed for only ten years are still considered amateurs.

Merle got Thom in a movie. That is some encouragment. Thom is handsome. Could have been a movie star. There's much more money in movies than there is in music. Maybe that's what Merle was thinking?
