It's true. This is NOT a real hologram. A real hologram actually uses optic fibers to suspend light in the air. What they did was just a camera trick done by the movies many many many times before. CNN even explains it that way.

its all digitally added, just like they did with the white house "hollogram" appearing on the table, etc. Its awesome technology, obviously, that all this is done in realtime, but not the same hollogram that people think it is.
its not fake, when i was in france i visited a place called futuroscope and they had a hologram with nothing to project on, and my hand passed through it, it looked like it was spinning on the glass table. so i believe it
fake fake fake...and the "hologram glow" is crappy compositing edges (like chroma keying the weatherman in front of map...same thing only with match camera moves) dont belive me? look up hologram and see if you find ANY technology that actually works.
There are TONS of real holographic imaging systems that work. Most are made completely different from each other, but the priniciples are the same. There just isnt anything yet based in a life size environment without using very large mirrors.
Building a realtime 3d image is not the problem. The problem lies with the projection of that image. In order for it to work, there needs to be a projection medium. Light will only enter your eye if it bounces off something (reflected), or is directly projected.
Clearly here, the projection medium would need to be 3-dimensional (not a flat surface). It would also need to contort precisely to the shape of the image depending on your view. This is not a holographic projection. Fake.
Exactly! They would need some kind of material in order for the light to be reflected. Light doesn't just bounce off air. And the images would have to be projected in a 3 dimensional way i.e. 3 points of projection. I'd say it's fake too...CGI!
the real image is clear (hd cams etc. 21 century technology), cnn added filter so it would look like little crappy (star wars), and it's not a hologram, just a greenscreen w/o the greenscreen.
It is a company in Norway who has developed this hologram for CNN. The company is called Vizrt and has been working with CNN for several years. With the exception of NBC, all the major US TV stations used graphics from Vizrt.
Why are you all suggesting he cannot see her? He clearly states that he's amazed by the fact that he CAN see her in front of him and he feels like speaking to her as if she was there, but she actually is 1000 miles away.
No, he's looking straight at her. If he was looking at a monitor why would he be amazed? Why would she say "we beamed her in"? Why would the crowd applaud?
I read some other comments and I just want to ad some things. This stuff may not be original as it is used in every movie with CGI. In CGI the problem is camera tracking, made here through camera sync movement. But this also not what you may have seen before because first of all it's live so there is no postprocessing and also the camera moves live. There is quite some processing power needed for that (30 frames per second) and everything in HD - I am sure you haven't seen this in Brazil.
actually it's merely two cameras moving synchronized. She is like your average weather man/woman keyed into the studio footage. This is like a virtual studio with a camera in the news studio and another one in her Bluescreenset moving in sync.
The ideea is not new at all, this system was, to my knowledge, first used in Star Wars 1977. Only it took days to setup and sync now it's done in real time....truly amazing. The blue halo is just for show as I am shure their hardware can do much better chroma keying.
This is how it works. The guest stands in a blue screen room. In the host studio the matted image of the guest is beeing overlayed. There are cameras placed exactly in the same position in both studios. The cameras are moved by wire and their motion is synchronized via the internet. The image you see are actually two images overlayed with the green matte removed from the guest image. The sync is pretty awesome as the cameras pan and zoom.
The cameras are not synced, the Chicago cam consists of several cameras filming here from different angles, forming a 3D image. Its nothing new about it.
It's not a hologram. The women is just recorded from different angels against a sort of a green screen. That image is then projected (pasted) into what the viewers see on their TV. The person standing there and having the interview is not actually seeing the hologram. The Software picks up the angle and displays the correct image, so it looks like a hologram on your Television set.
Its a hologram in the sense that is recorded like a hologram, but since there is no technology to properly display the hologram outside of the computer, they have to paste it onto regular flat screen.
You are wrong. A single camera would've been sufficient to give the TV viewers a 3D look, not 26. It could move around the subject in sync with the camera in NY and there you have it. Why do you think they used 25 freaking cameras!? To make a real hologram! DUH!
How the fuck do you know that the person taking the interview can't see her?! Did you work on the project? Didn't think so! If it was just a flat image they wouldn't have needed 26 fucking HD cameras! One camera that could rotate around the subject would've been enough! Some people just don't think.
If she was actually projected into the studio then there would've been reflections on the floor from the hologram, just compare the two when they're in the same shot (1:52). She's a real-time overlay that is syncing the studio camera movements with the 25 HD cameras. So he can't see her, but the viewers can.

Hey you Americans STILL using this crap old holograms? Holograms are OUT OF DATE here in Brazilian TV.
In Brazil we have STAR WARS technology just like in that movies! Brazilian journalists can travel in time and space to bring the Brazilian news! Then, Brazilian TV is much better than this bullshit! Brazilians are the BEST in everything! haaaa!
It is technically complicated but actually really simple. She is surrounded by cameras in Chicago that are positioned similarly to the cameras in New York. The camera's communicate to decide which is currently being shown in New York and pick the corresponding one in Chicago. Then using standard "green screen" compositing tech, they paste her image into the studio in New York for the TV audiences.
Sadly the actual audience could only hear her, rather than see her.Such 3d displays are in progress
It is true that I don't have conclusive proof. I have experience with graphics technology however. The current generation of 3d displaying technology is still very limited (up to 10 colors at most), and usually required a completely enclosed gas chamber. On top of this, the setup she described with the cameras having to be linked up (not necessary in a physical setup), the slight sheering of her image as cameras rotated so that her position moved relative to the set as well as her viewing angle.
it's just post processing, like the elvis thing a while back. only actual technology for projection in nothing is on a stream of air but that's blurry and low quality.

fake fake fake...and the "hologram glow" is crappy compositing edges (like chroma keying the weatherman in front of map...same thing only with match camera moves) dont belive me? look up hologram and see if you find ANY technology that actually works.
trenchrun 3 years ago
There are TONS of real holographic imaging systems that work. Most are made completely different from each other, but the priniciples are the same. There just isnt anything yet based in a life size environment without using very large mirrors.

LOL look at the cameras on the right side of the screen at 1:07...
If you look closely you can see that Jessica is not appering on those screens

Building a realtime 3d image is not the problem. The problem lies with the projection of that image. In order for it to work, there needs to be a projection medium. Light will only enter your eye if it bounces off something (reflected), or is directly projected.
Clearly here, the projection medium would need to be 3-dimensional (not a flat surface). It would also need to contort precisely to the shape of the image depending on your view. This is not a holographic projection. Fake.
krysylys 3 years ago

With the exception of NBC, all the major US TV stations used graphics from Vizrt.

does he see her in 3-d in front of him or not?
paforbo 3 years ago
no, he has to look to a screen to see her like it always was. It just looks like she is in the studio for the tv viewsers
todoke 3 years ago
Why are you all suggesting he cannot see her? He clearly states that he's amazed by the fact that he CAN see her in front of him and he feels like speaking to her as if she was there, but she actually is 1000 miles away.
Znupi18 3 years ago
Sorry, hes looking at her through a monitor on the side, much like a weatherman.
sparks444 3 years ago
No, he's looking straight at her. If he was looking at a monitor why would he be amazed? Why would she say "we beamed her in"? Why would the crowd applaud?

I read some other comments and I just want to ad some things. This stuff may not be original as it is used in every movie with CGI. In CGI the problem is camera tracking, made here through camera sync movement. But this also not what you may have seen before because first of all it's live so there is no postprocessing and also the camera moves live. There is quite some processing power needed for that (30 frames per second) and everything in HD - I am sure you haven't seen this in Brazil.
builder2000 3 years ago
actually it's merely two cameras moving synchronized. She is like your average weather man/woman keyed into the studio footage. This is like a virtual studio with a camera in the news studio and another one in her Bluescreenset moving in sync.
grueni62 3 years ago
The ideea is not new at all, this system was, to my knowledge, first used in Star Wars 1977. Only it took days to setup and sync now it's done in real time....truly amazing. The blue halo is just for show as I am shure their hardware can do much better chroma keying.
builder2000 3 years ago
Not for 26 HD cameras it isn't.
Znupi18 3 years ago
This is how it works. The guest stands in a blue screen room. In the host studio the matted image of the guest is beeing overlayed. There are cameras placed exactly in the same position in both studios. The cameras are moved by wire and their motion is synchronized via the internet. The image you see are actually two images overlayed with the green matte removed from the guest image. The sync is pretty awesome as the cameras pan and zoom.
builder2000 3 years ago
so...its not hologram at all huh? it's just two camera syncing at the same time? man...i thought we really done it :(
harry781012 3 years ago
So he does NOT see her in front of him. She only appears on the screens. Right?

The cameras are not synced, the Chicago cam consists of several cameras filming here from different angles, forming a 3D image. Its nothing new about it.

sparks444 3 years ago
It's not a hologram. The women is just recorded from different angels against a sort of a green screen. That image is then projected (pasted) into what the viewers see on their TV. The person standing there and having the interview is not actually seeing the hologram. The Software picks up the angle and displays the correct image, so it looks like a hologram on your Television set.
BurningZa 3 years ago 3
Its a hologram in the sense that is recorded like a hologram, but since there is no technology to properly display the hologram outside of the computer, they have to paste it onto regular flat screen.
sparks444 3 years ago 2
Then why would it be recorded like a hologram in the first place?
Znupi18 3 years ago
Because the camera in the NY studio is moving about. If it was stationary, regular green screen technology would be sufficient.
sparks444 3 years ago
You are wrong. A single camera would've been sufficient to give the TV viewers a 3D look, not 26. It could move around the subject in sync with the camera in NY and there you have it. Why do you think they used 25 freaking cameras!? To make a real hologram! DUH!
Znupi18 3 years ago
How the fuck do you know that the person taking the interview can't see her?! Did you work on the project? Didn't think so! If it was just a flat image they wouldn't have needed 26 fucking HD cameras! One camera that could rotate around the subject would've been enough! Some people just don't think.
Znupi18 3 years ago

Brazilians are the BEST in everything! haaaa!

Is a virtual(computer generated) is not real hologram
kossxtreeme 3 years ago
someone EXPLAIN HOW IT WORKS!
aznmaplemaster 3 years ago
It is technically complicated but actually really simple. She is surrounded by cameras in Chicago that are positioned similarly to the cameras in New York. The camera's communicate to decide which is currently being shown in New York and pick the corresponding one in Chicago. Then using standard "green screen" compositing tech, they paste her image into the studio in New York for the TV audiences.
Sadly the actual audience could only hear her, rather than see her.Such 3d displays are in progress
NojhLivic 3 years ago
"Sadly the actual audience could only hear her, rather than see her."
How do you know that?
Znupi18 3 years ago
• 35 HD cameras pointed at the subject in a ring
• Different cameras shoot at different angles (like the matrix), to transmit the entire body image
• The cameras are hooked up to the cameras in home base in NY, synchronizing the angles so perspective is right
Only after computers merge the video feeds together do you get a coherent "hologram" + person scenario.
rabieschu 3 years ago
It is true that I don't have conclusive proof. I have experience with graphics technology however. The current generation of 3d displaying technology is still very limited (up to 10 colors at most), and usually required a completely enclosed gas chamber. On top of this, the setup she described with the cameras having to be linked up (not necessary in a physical setup), the slight sheering of her image as cameras rotated so that her position moved relative to the set as well as her viewing angle.
NojhLivic 3 years ago
yes star wars beam people !! R2-D2 showed a hologram of princess Leia

it's just post processing, like the elvis thing a while back. only actual technology for projection in nothing is on a stream of air but that's blurry and low quality.

I's not real. She did not appear on set. She was just composited into the shot in post, so only the TV viewers could see her. Calling it a "hologram" is misleading. Shame on you, CNN, for trying to put one over on people with this tripe.
