Do you prefer buying the starters and use containers for gardening which can get expensive compared to using cheap seeds and the regular earth? Also was that water spray a little too hard? It looked like it but it could have just been the angle of the camera.
A few tips.. this soil (amendment) is designed to be mixed with your native soil ...not used alone(read the bag) you will get alot of green growth rather than root growth(especially with the very high nitrogen fertilisers) ..the tomato should not be growing much above the soil during the first 2 weeks instead it should be growing roots.. try to find fertiliser with a low nitrogen number.and add some compost to that soil.the difference will be considerable. thanks for posting this
Great video Kev, i cleaned out the shed today and got out the pots and our large wash tubs to start planting again. Just need to make a trip to the nursery to get some tomato, mint, and pepper plants. Already have some potatoes going to seed.
@survivalistboards looks very organic to me . Even the soil is organic . I was told never use manure for crops you'll eat from only flowers and shrubs. . You did a good job planting them deep.
i also have the grape tomatoes and always have tons that fall off and just sprout come the next spring ,romanio also do the same ,,I delibertly let a few veggies go to seed and fall on my permaculture style garden and relocate the new sprouts when large enough..I do get a later harvest time but the summer heat is perfect to dehydrate the harvest by solar power too !!
The plants need all the sun they can get. Tomato plants need to be able to expand in width in the root ball or your not going to have the produce you are looking for. Do not till or hoe the root ball or you have just stunted the plant. I have been growing a garden for eons and know what I am talking about.
@J0Boa Same here - had same tomatoes in 5gal bucket and some in a raised bed. The raised bed ones got to be 6ft tall, the bucket one barely at 3" total. Only container things I use are sugar peas, bush beans and radishes.
I tried to grow some of those upside down tomatoes and failed misterably I drilled some holes in the buckets and it just didn't work I have an old tub I might just fil that with potting soil and see if I can yield some tomatoes.
what is triple 13 and do i need it?

What you want is heirloom varieties of veggies/fruits. Also always grow organic, miracle grow makes organic soil that works great.
My soil mix:
25% Mushroom Compost.
25% Perlite---not miracle grow perlite because it has fertilizer in it and to much nitrogen can burn the leaves and kill the plant.
50% Miracle grow Organic soil.
Top off the plants with some homemade compost around the base, about 1/2 an inch will do. Do not fertilize until the ferts are used up in the soil.

We planted two grape tomato plants last year, and it produced more tomatoes then our family of 8 could eat!
They were amazing.

I get much better results when planting tomatoes right in the ground. For some reason tub planted tomatoes do not get as big
