Flies straight very fast and that`s about it. A couple of these had an emergency landing in the UK for repairs years ago and I knew one of the guys who helped fix the one of planes that had trouble,He said he had a new found respect for the Russian pilots because theres no way in hell he would have flown in one of those rust buckets.Russian planes and choppers look impressive but they only seem to be able to do one thing good and you need aircraft to be more than that.

@ProjectFlashlight612 man, it was designed to be a high altitude recoinnance and interceptor, it was never ment to compete against fighters, it was ment for bombers, plus it is built effictivly, for its own purpose, not to show off!!

The MiG-25, in the hands of a good pilot and a little luck, could take out some superior aircraft. 1. It can completely avoid a mess with speed. 2. It has long-range missiles. No Western aircraft uses long-range missiles, not even the F-15 or F-16. It's only weakness is that it has no short-range missiles, no guns, and from what I've heard, fairly average-poor handling. It flies very fast straight, and little else.

If you look at the timing, it seems as though Russian Intelligence learned of the Arrow and realized they would need a fighter that could counter it. The fighter would have to be fast enough to counter-intercept the Arrow and armed enough to repel it. IMO, the Foxbat was designed as a direct competitor to the Arrow. When the Arrow project was scrapped the Foxbat had to be repurposed, but at least it didn't suffer the untimely death of the Arrow

It's that 'death' I have a problem with as the Arrow was not just shelved due to costs or even partnered up with NATO Allies, but rather chopped into bits & the plans destroyed. Some still feel America played a big role with some heavy handed 'arm twisting' & I'm not sure they were wrong.

If you believe the CBC movie, and in some ways I do, the Canadian government was swindled into believing that fighters where obsolete. After the Arrows cancellation they realized how wrong they where and wanted to make sure the plane would be forgotten to preserve their integrity. Unfortunately for them, in doing so they turned an aircraft that could have just been shelved and ignored and made it a national icon that secured that administrations reputation as a failure

I have not seen the movie, however I would saycalling what transpired as a' failure'as too kind. The Soviet threat was real as were our alliances.

There can be no justification for the destruction of Crown Assets in light of this. I can not help but feel what was done bordered on treason as it hurt the defense of Canada &her allies. Regardless of the stage of production all that had been developed was paid for by Canadian taxpayers and was essentially their property.

Hello. There is no way. The Foxbat has far superior records accomplished. Like the Arrow it was designed as an interceptor and bomber, not as a fighter. Some Foxbats are still in use. I just read a British book on war planes, and they say the MIG 25 was a superior airplane. Check Wikipedia buddy.

@harris3693 I'm not sure I follow you Harris? This aircraft appeared on or about '65(?), where as the Avro Arrow was airborne in '58. Then, even the Yanks were flying 'Cigar Tubes'. I suspect there was some heavy arm twisting from the USA to 'scuttle' Canada's program for fear the Soviets would infiltrate & steal designs. To this day I consider the actions of the PM Diefenbaker to be borderline treasonous as the destruction of 'Crown Assets' is now, & was then inexcusable.

Worth noting: the only confirmed Iraqi air-to-air victory of the Persian Gulf War was by a Foxbat against a US Navy F/A-18.

A very good and successful plane of the USSR, Iraq imported a quite good number of these planes against the Iranian F-14 and Phanthom F-4 during the Iran Iraq war.
