It is always preferable to sand it down in order to get it as smooth as possible. ALWAYS use gloves, and yes, latex gloves are fine, cheap and disposable. And it smells pretty strong. Make sure you are in a properly ventilated area.
Does bondo HAVE to be sanded down? Also, what soap would you suggest to use to get it off your hands? Would latex gloves be alright? Also, how bad does it smell?
can i apply it over my paper mache cause theres lots of cracks? i made a scythe and the paper mache over it is really hard, but im trying to find something i can put over it to smooth it out, would this work?

I usually wear latex gloves and turn on my shop exhaust fan, but if I did turn it on you wouldn't be able to hear me. The fumes are harmful, true.

You can wash it off by using a good degreasing soap as used in any autoshop.
