Maybe it's me but he sounded a little off. Yeah, his vocals aren't perfect but if you sound anywhere close to the record version, you're doing a helluva lot better than most artists today!
If you check out his VH1 Storytellers concert, there's no auto-tune.. and its in my own opinion, his best professionally recorded live performance (as far as vocals go). Go torrent it or something.
At least you can tell it's not auto-tuned. He nailed those falsetto notes towards the end anyway. And I think I actually like the quality of his voice more in this video when it's not super edited, at least when he's in tune.
C'mon guys, he's not a good singer. But it doesn't mean he's not a good artist. You like an artist by the whole pack, not just because of one thing. I don't like his singing sometimes, but I must say that I really appreciate him as an artist, singer, songwriter and guitarist. Obviously there are lots of better singers out there, but for sure there are a lot worse. Anyway, if you enjoy watching and listening to him perform so you feel alive, that's what really matters. Cheers!
I *actually* like this version better. it's like..much more HIS, you know?["it used to be you know who"] not just the great cover we know it is. I mean, just listen to 2:50. come on, could it be any better?
his voice does sound different from WTLI, but not even in a bad way. and it seems obvious to me that he's trying to sound different, too, so i don't get why people are complaining as if it's a bad thing. he still sounds absolutely amazing!
isn't the fact that where the light is has been re-dubbed and most likely re-recorded and cleaned up mean that this gig obviously won't sound as clean.
all the same, its a great song by a great songwriter, let JM do his thing, he does it better than most.
@FreaquedeMusique I've seen videos of people that were at the concert and had just there own cameras and he sounded exactly the same. There was no doubt editing to edit out the crowd and things like that, but no autotune. I think the most logical thing would be that he was sick right here. Nobody (not even John Mayer) can be dead on every time.
People get sick and have sore throats etc and it affects them, he's only human like the rest of us.. 99% of his videos on youtube he sounds amazing, people should appreciate he done the show, with whatever was going on with him that day/night and not be so picky!
the only other person i know of that has the vocals, guitar playing and songwriting skills of a god that i have NEVER heard less than perfect, live OR studio is Steve Lukather. look him up. while ur at it, listen for his rendition of 'while my gtr gently weeps' by harrison.
if u guys wanna bitch, bitch at Taylor Swift. Pleeease.
john mayer is one of the worlds foremost guitarists with every great blues god vyying to guest with him and he to guest with them. john mayer is one of the worlds foremost songwriters writing hit after hit. john mayer is an awesome vocalist in and out of the studio. he experiments onstage and, granted, some moments here were less than perfect but by all that is good, find someone else to bitch about.
idk if anyone else realizes this..... but he's just up there havin fun. his singing is less raspy than it was, and now his vocal chords will b healthier. He is a great performer and musician. dont hate lol
runs into falsetto, not so perfect, damn, just different. I think it just lacks the backing vocals by David Ryan for you all to shut up. Of course, until 4:38, which is just painful...
i just wonder how everyone manages to insult someone who actually makes a classic song their own. in my opinion the vocals are awesome.. john mayer = amazing performer
Sometimes he has off nights with his vocals, I read an interview where he said his vocals are temperamental and sometimes it makes him more nervous when its not going his way. Also, Where The Light Is had pitch control and some editing done for the CD/DVD release.
@HalfBillion Finally, someone else who knows about PitchControl... You won't believe how many times I've tried to explain it to people... Shame a lot of artists use it, even live, and even when they don't NEED it. John Mayer sounds great, live, for real, without PitchControl. But I guess it's too easy to use it...
Can't you people stop complaining about his vocals and just enjoy the show? After all, it's John Mayer, the guy's a genius even at a bad night! Give him a break:)
people are talking about he's voice... is he's natural voice, in every concert... i'm sure that you guy haven't always the same voice, sometimes better sometimes worst (even speaking, our voice is different sometimes)
putting aside the vocals, i am surprisingly inspired by this raw emotion that he projected in this song. especially, when he said thank you for making him feels good doing music again. Every musician will have a saturation point where they feel disconnected with music, playing with an empty soul..and yet, the fact john had rediscovered the pure love for music, really send a strong message of encouragement to the budding musicians out there. thank you, john.
It's call post production, they put pitch correction and autotune on his voice after the recording of the concert, much like they do in the studio, they then sync the polished audio with the video and there you go.
I am asuming that this concert went out live on fuse so they did not do any post production/post mixing of the audio. That is why it does not sound as polished and you can hear his off notes. Where the light is= polished post production, this show......... not so much.
guitardaze this is true but if you watch some of the videos on youtube of john mayer - free fallin' where he's been filmed by members of the audience you'll notice his voice is pretty much the same as on Where the Light Is DVD
c'mon. he had shows back to back. probably playing his more intense songs. he didn't punk out when he couldn't hit the note, he gave the people what they came for and sacrificed throat. keep in mind when john hit the stage he was a lot younger. his voice has gotten deeper since then. stop trying to put people in a box.
where the light was edited to make his voice more crisp duh.... its called pitch correction, thats what all your beloved pop stars are using.. mayer has mad talent though.. but yea thats why the DVD sounds better.
I'm with you xionix87. John's a real person. Living, playing, and singing. Some days are better than others. But he's up there unafraid dealing with the good and the bad. I wonder if the people of some of these negative comments could ever have as much courage. I think not.
in where the light is he also has harmonizing vocals and two back up guitars so it just has more depth to it. I still love seeing someone just get up with just their voice and a guitar and play. just something so raw about it. very real.
I agree. But i still like John, maybe he just had a bad day or whatever. Maybe he had shows earlier, and he has to get used to doing big shows again. Voice a little sore or w/e
i saw him the night before at the music hall of williamsburg, a myspace secret show with 300 people or so and he was on FIRE and played for about 2 1/2 hours. i think he was a bit fatigued to play another really long set the night after.
I'm a proffessional singer and can tell you that a gig of this magnatude would take it's toll even before he's got on stage. That and the fact that as you get older you realise that you don't have to scream everything to death. If John wants to continue into his twighlight years without noddules on his vocal chords, he's doing the right thing. BE A FAN, NOT A CRITIC!
I've seen him three times and in 2007, live he literally sounded better than the continuum album. I know that sounds crazy but it was amazing, truly. I just think he's alomst peaked, which is sad. Maybe a come back with a new trio album.
@AgentZeroForTheWin On the Where The Light is show, John Mayer uses a stupid technology to straighten his voice. Before you start insulting me and stuff, I LOVE John Mayer. But even a talented guy like him, who doesn't NEED any voice control at all, uses it a lot. Mark my words, the majority of big artists out there uses it, even live! It is a very simple technique, known to most as PitchControl, and it's very easy to use live. And 95% of all people don't hear it...This is John Mayer FOR REAL!
@Lorror69 Exactly. ....The fact that Where the Light Is was a live recording that was sold in stores nation- wide, you can be rest assured they did a TON of mixing, pitch correction, balancing, etc etc to make it sound perfect

@AgentZeroForTheWin thats because here he hasn't performed in front of a big crowd for a while and on where there light is he was in his prime and was very comfortable with all of his songs
Every singer knows that we have our good and bad days vocally. We may be doing the same exact thing but even the tiniest factors even in just weather can throw everything off.
