This video solved so many of my problems. I am much more consistent and the misses are not bad either. I realized that you got to have a good backswing and set up at the top to be able to get to the ball on the bottom. Many thanks.
It can be your way of hinging the wrists; they should hinge on both snuff boxes simultaneously and you should not try to keep the back of your left wrist flat; see "grip 2 wrist hinge; shawn clement" and "knife the grip; shawn clement" Shawn
Merci
Yes, many many many!! :) Please see "#1 most popular teacher on yt; ridiculously easy" part 1 and 2, "Golf Pro Lesson Tilted spiral" part 1, 2 and 3" and "#1 most popular teacher on yt; feet together and one leg"
the idea that you twist your upper torso against your restricted hips is hogwash...without any hipturn you cannot get a full extention in your arc...great stuff shawn...
Shawn, I believe your method is the most correct way of starting the club..just ask Snead, Nicklaus, Daly, Watson (Bubba and Tom), Jones...the hips must turn in the backswing....
Shawn, you use a one piece takeaway here (I assume!). What do you think of using a right forearm takeaway (eg Stuart Appleby). I find it easier to control the length of my backswing and keep the club on plane if I let the right arm dominate. What is your opinion on this? Cheers
I have only one remark. There is to much hips movement in the backswing in the video. The backswing should be mostly provided by the upper body rotation, the right leg should stay so firm as possible.
This is so typical of someone not knowing what is under the hood of the human body; College golf, mini tours, and all the top tours in the world have an epidemic of back troubles...ALL BECAUSE OF WHAT YOU SAY HERE; the spine has BUILT IN STOPPERS IN EVERY VERTEBRAE CALLED FACETS that ARE DESIGNED TO PREVENT THE SPINE FROM TWISTING; which means that the hips are the turn table for the swing; please see "golf pro lesson learn your golf machine" video!
@clemshaw The hips should start to work in the backswing, but not during the takeaway. The takeaway should be done only by the upper body. If the golfer will tend to start the backswing rotation from the hips (which will happen by a lot of beginners, because its easier), you have to compensate this movements during the downswing and you will hit a lot of wrong balls.
@RobertFromHere Robert; you and I are GRAVITY EXPERTS that have been living on this planet for 2 Million years; When bowling, tossing horse shoes, swinging a heavy axe ETC...the arm-tool unit, in this case, the arm-club unit, TRACKS IT'S OWN ARC and swings freely because the body's WIRED DESIGN is to respond and SELF PRESERVE and get out of the way! PLEASE see my "golf pro lesson Ridiculously easy" and "golf pro lesson how to coordinate arm motion with body turn" before making another comment
@cpbutler567 I use the perpetual motion drill and the hammer drill: See "golf pro lesson feel and let the hammer through" and "golf pro lesson feel your swing plane" as well as "golf pro lesson perpetual motion drill" and "golf pro lesson swing plane"
hi about the closed position when you start your backswing when you turn your sholders and hips it brings it in a toe up position naturaly and when you come through. I think you have to think abot making your arms straight going back
@Golfpro411 Not at all! You just toss them back with a nice heaving action (you never over heave an axe of a sledge hammer); this heaving action is coordinated with the focus of using the weight of the arm club unit to compress through the ball to a target; see "golf pro lesson feel your swing plane" and "golf pro lesson feel and let the hammer through"; Shawn
SHAWN, At address, with your arms drawn taught under your shoulders, imagine there is a "razor sharp" PIRATE'S SWORD suspended only 4" over your grip and pointed down the target line. Now, swing back & through like the "Crane & Wrecking Ball", but keeping your hands well under this sharp blade. WOW ! It's added a lot of effortless power to my swing. Maybe you could demo this in a video? Thanks Shawn for giving me game! Your friend, Tony from Pinehurst
I think this drill makes you swing the club inside on the takeaway. If you take the club outside going back then this drill is for you but be carefull!
@MrMinorman Super important comment!! See "golf pro lesson learn your golf machine" and then you will understand why I came out with "golf pro lesson x out the x factor" which was designed from a misinformed perception and opinion of how the body is made; it is one of the learning curves we all go through as teachers; some choose to defend their theories instead of admitting a mistake; shoulders only have on average 20 degrees of range of motion; 90 degrees is from a different planet...
hi shawn. love your videos. experienced alot of lower back pain lately after a lot of golf. watched your crane video and you seem to go against the 45 for hips and 90 for shoulders and you seem to have similar rotation in both.maybe its a false assumption by me but it takes a lot of pressure off my back.if you can comment thanks.
@MrMinorman When you see "golf pro lesson learn your golf machine", you will see that it is about the pelvis and rib cage turning on top of the hips; this is necessary to allow the arm-club unit to swing freely in both directions; see "golf pro lesson how to coordinate arm motion with body turn" and "golf pro lesson stop crashing" for more!
Shawn, your videos are great!! I purchased your Wisdom in Golf videos and they are a huge help!! Can't wait to get up there for my scheduled lessons in August. Short ride from CT to learn from you in person. Thanks!!
this is a great tip/lesson..i couldnt figure out why i was slicing the ball. i was opening my club face too soon, i went to the range that night and starting hitting clean shots, almost effortlessly. well done shawn!
Shawn, your left wrist though you are not manipulating it at all, is flat at the top. I have a problem over roating the wrists in the takeaway but cannot seem to get this down.
@NikeGolf118 I am guessing you are taking the club inside and rolling the wrists? What helps me to get the club on plane is to keep the left wrist cupped on the backswing and get the wrists cocking early. But remember to stay wide! The key is to video your swing from behind and just try different things until you work out how it feels to swing it on plane then just stick with that feeling.
What a beautiful sound of that club! I understand there are no manipulated positions in your swing but how comes it seems your wrist is flat at the top of the back swing? I am having trouble with this concept even though I have your dvd and have watched the bridging flat wrist video. Thanks
HI Shawn ,Rick, I am the inventor of the csquare golf ball that I sent you . Didn't I tell you I watch your videos . Love the fact that your videos are always created in thought.
I love your videos. One quick question, How can I keep myself from ducking on the backswing? my left knee turns in too much, and causes me to duck. should I put more weight on my right foot? or should i try to straighten my left foot, and not bend it as much.
The person who asks regarding why Shawn isn't on tour is not only grammatically challenged a little, he's also a jerk. Does he not know that only 125 people in the ENTIRE WORLD are on the tour? Let's put it this way: Butch Harmon is not on the tour. Nor is Hank Haney. I'm learning off Shawn FROM VIDEOS ONLY so far. And getting better. Teachers excel at teaching, something which thousands of people experience with Shawn Clement. Keep up the great work, Shawn!
yeah Shawn, why bother to answer a fool, You have transformed my game. I cannot begin to thank you enough for all the FREE instruction you offer. You truly love the game as I do thank you again.
hey I have sent a video message to you. In the vid i'm the blue dude. I was wondering why my shots have the tendancy to hook sometimes, Im sure it's hook and not draw tho. Also how can I make my shots more consistent at this time I shoot (on average) 10 yards left or right of the target I have. Length is not a problem for me, it's mostly the aim or hooking the shot. I don't have any other problems. I hope you can help, thanks!
@drdeathkwp Some people have a natural talent to teach. To be able to express a technique in a manner that many people can both understand and easily incorporate it into their own game is rare. Instead of being snarky and rude appreciate the loads of free content being offered here by Shawn. I do. Thanks.
your personality is a pleasure to watch and your teaching is very sound. there are many people out there who have the knowledge yet cannot bridge the gap.
Shawn, I'm surprised you even responded to this fool, although I did like your responses. Let's see.....how many "great" golf teaching pros do we know that are also touring pros?
Hi Sahwn it's Aldo Here, I'm 5'5 I grip my irons club ver short because it's standard club fit, how do you think has to be the fit's of my club I mean how lenght because I with my long irons especially I feel very longs the club, thanks other think the the only way I can hit very solid shot it;s feeling a very smooth take way I mean very slow of course I snocht my right knee to feel the momentum, please thanks
One observation. We see on tour telecasts(specially Ladies) that the takeaway is very very slow. Does not seem to be a toss at all. How do we reconcile this with inertia and arms getting lifted with the body and not on their own.
Great video, love the crane and wrecking ball analogy.had an horrendous month with shanks and slices this video confirmed the right way to take the club back hitting solid draws again
This is a great video-Shawn thanks, it has helped me with a little issue I have.
My other big problem is re routing the hands to an outside plane-the over the top move (Bsically the opposite that sergio does, it makes me come in very steep and hit it all over the place).
"golf pro lesson perpetual motion drill" and "golf pro lesson timing and tempo update"; letting the momentum from the follow through going into the backswing track the arm-club unit into the proper plane so that it can fall back down the plane to the target; see also "golf pro lesson arms falling down plane" Shawn
Is your first move thought 'move arms' or is it 'rotate round axis/spine' and hence the arms move as well.
If I move I think move arms-I will often takeaway outside the line, but if I rotate and let arms move with rotation this gives what I percieve as a good takeaway, I then just raise my left arm like mad (2 plane swing). Be interested what you think.
Ugh. I'm still taking the club back too far inside, leading to over the top and all the problems that follow. Even doing the perpetual motion drill, the club swings around to the inside, not up and down.
While I've got you here, my hands are also releasing too early, causing the ball to go way to high even though my contact is pretty good.
Yes; see the "golf pro lesson medicine ball drill" and use perpetual motion with that drill; understand that the arm-club unit tracks it's own arc and should never rely on manipulation or the body for placement; it just tracks freely; see also "golf pro lesson allow the arms to swing" and "golf pro lesson timing and tempo update"...Shawn
Hi Shawn, It is about the intensity of the back swing. In the perpetual motion drill one is using the momentum to come back into the back swing like the crane smoothly. However when it comes to swinging in a shot, even using a waggle(as in video-"Tempo and Timing") the intensity does not seem enough to levitate the arms unless the move of the butt is quite fast and almost jerky. This does not bring about a slow and smooth back swing. Can you please comment on this. Thanks and have a great day.
Reminds me of Ray Floyd If you watch his pre-shot he always had his feet in motion back and forth back and forth "catching the next one through" thats a good one
Great Lesson. Question..What starts the forward swing ? Do you get a feeling of the upper still going back as the bottom starts to move forward ? Thats the way a crane would swing a wrecking ball..the boom will start moving forward before the ball stops going back causing a drag motion (lag)
Yes; like that boom, it is in response to the predicted momentum coming back down; it must be instinctive and not mechanical; see "golf pro lesson perpetual motion drill" and "golf pro lesson momentum toss" part 1 and 2; Shawn
Straightening of the back leg usually indicates a collapse into your forward side. Make sure you remain braced against your forward side and not collapsing on top of it. You should feel leverage on the inside of your back foot, if it rolls to the outside you've lost your leverage and the back leg will over straigthen. Hope that helps!
Shawn, I just want to thank you for all the great instruction. You're truly an exceptional PGA Golf instructor. About 55 seconds into this video you stated pay no attention to this. It was the right wrist rotating up on the backswing! I've been playing for almost 4 years now, I've had three lessons and all this time my right wrist would rotate forward as my arm would bend! As you can imagine your way feels much more powerful. I'll be at the range tomorrow for lunch again. From Denver.
Yes; you need to feel how the right foot stays on the ground through impact with the feet together drill as well as the uphill shots, ball below the feet shots and fairway bunker shots; the key is to feel how you can whip the club with effortless power without needing to use the right side! I have videos on all these subjects! Shawn
Have used a few of your tips, and they seem to work :) Only have one problem and its me taking the club too much inside in the backswing ending up with at 10degree in out swing. Any more advice or swingthoughts that could help me get a steeper backswing?
press the butt end of club on belly button then let ur body rotate you will get a feel for one piece takeaway rather than using ur arms take the club back
Eddiebutt1 's tip is not bad! You can also see my "golf pro lesson timing and tempo update" as well as my "golf pro lesson perpetual motion drill' videos; another fantastic drill to get the whole system balanced properly is the "golf pro lesson feet together drill"; if you are off plane or out of sequence or sync, you simply fall down...:) Shawn
Same thing happened to me, contact was super, great speed through the ball but it got me swinging inside to out with a shut face. I think it is also related to the hips kind of reversing at the top and then if I slide forward you get major plane shift to the right. Great stuff by Mr. Clement though.
The Drills you need to go to are the "Golf Pro lesson perpetual motion drill" and combine this with the "Watch Dog Blog Hunter Mahan Power Fade"; You need to perfect the fade and the draw to keep the system balanced! Shawn
Shawn, I am an avid viewer of your videos and they have been an immense help. I try to model my swing to yours. With regard to the takeaway - is the crane and wrecking ball feel a deliberate motion in the initial part of takeaway or after the forward knee press is it then just a carefree toss of the arms up into the backswing?
Hi Shawn, Great videos. What do you feel about 3/4 backswing as advocated by Don Trahan. My back is suffering but it seems to be made worse when I 'snatch' at the top and start down with the shoulders and hands. So I thought about shortening it. Really appreciate your help.
WIth the x-factor swing I was starting to get a middle of the back twinge and right hamstring tendonitis. Now all of my joint issues went away with Shawns swing. The big hip turn really alleviates an lower to mid back pressure.
Go to his Top 25 Golf Pro Lesson Feet Together Drill video. This will help out A LOT!!!
Thank you so much. from being an 8 handicap I have slipped to 15 because i started freezing in my backswing-your right knee inward move to start the swing has really helped me focus on core body turn instead of a hands and arms pick-up move, It will take time but yesterday i shot an 82 with that more relaxed feel. Keep up the great work!
Shawn this move specifically along with your other great vids. have helped so much. That little kick to get started and then "toss" are all I think of in my swing and I hit the ball so solid. Again your other vids. have def. helped as well. You are the best instructor I have ever seen and I live in Phoenix where there are alot of them.
Someone out there is jealous of your success, what with them giving the comments the old thumbs down. Guess that must mean your doing something right. Ive got your DVDs and they are so well thought through and easy to understand. Im always reverting back to hear what Shawn Clement had to say about this and that!! Keep up the good work.
Fantastic! After watching your DVD Disc 1 just now, I went to the range to try out the levitation in the takeaway, and it works. It really is effortless momentum.
Hey guys, I have a buddy (retired golf pro) who has been selling a golf training program and doing real well with it. He'll get you under 80 in no time.
I've seen many people doing that little nudge forward as you describe. They are usually athletic and good golfers, so they understand that concept. Now I get what they are instinctly doing. The crane and medicine ball are great analogies. Thanks.
PS. I hear so many people including pros talking about hitting down on the ball with irons and leaving a divot after hitting the ball. I'm confused.
I wish I had this the other day. I have been doing a mini perpetual motion drill in lieu of a waggle. WIth this swing change, I like to have my legs and shoulders feeling well oiled before I swing. However I got into weird rut where I ended up looping badly in the backswing. I turned a tossed backsing to into a one plane one piece takeaway that forced me to loop and come over the ball badly.
The next day I realized what I did and shot an ok 82. I feel like a moron.
Great set of vids, Shawn. Also brilliant DVD set. 61 years old and my handicap is going down plus distance, direction and ball flight are vastly improved. I've had trouble with the arms falling but practice is the key.
in fact the takeaway starts firstly in ball of your left foot to counter balance the pull of your left forefinger. most people over analyse but forget basics. 95% of people grip too tight. it should only attain 100% 6" from impact. 12-20% is all that is needed to keep hold of the club on the upswing. muscles are connected and if 1 is overtight- so are the rest. concentrate on the feeling of restriction in your left stomach muscle (seratus anterior) and external obliques. know your body!!!!!
Either or! The key is to feel the weight of the arm club unit at address and feel like you are going to use this weight to compress through the ball to the target! Shawn
Hey shawn im a bit confused. My father in law is a scratch golfer and is currently trying for the pga senior tour, and he told me the take away starts with the arms and shoulders and then that forces you around. That you are not supposed to let your left side turn much that the only reason it turns is because your lower body resists the upper body turning. I like what you have to say but just a bit confused. Which one is right? Thanks so much for the help. Your videos are awesom. Just supscribe
Hey Jamison; I was doing what your father in law is doing about 15 years ago...:) I found this much more efficient and this is what they were teaching until the era of video analysis where teachers started giving their opinions as to how to swing the club but they did so without looking under the hood! (anatomy, physiology, neurology) See "Golf Pro lesson learn your golf machine" and it will clear certain things up for you; Thanks for your comment! Shawn
Shawn, I've noticed every single time you hit the ball, you do something with your right knee, why is that? does that help you with your backswing? you move your right knee to your left before you take away the ball
See "golf pro lesson golf swing medicine" then "golf pro lesson momentum toss" part 1 and 2 and finally "Golf Pro lesson perpetual motion drill"; very important subject!!! Thanks for your question! Shawn
I'll believe those numbers when I see them. I bet your short game sucks. I'm guessing you can throw a 98 mph fastball, and throw a football 80 yards with full pads on.
There isn't a better instructor online, period. Def. not one that offers this much GREAT information for free.
nah . i play all the time and all i see is INFLEXIBILITY. you lot make me laugh . oh and yeah i earn good cash out ofcoaching and side betting. like 94,000,00 last year. not bad for a supposedly amateur. maybe im just 1 in a million. and just for fact this guy is pants. aint got a stomach muscle in him..
you have a poor grasp of basic numbers and english durs6, go back to school. you really are one in a million: 1 arogant twat, among a million people who want to improve their game by listening to a great teacher....
arrogant!! yes i am. and that is what makes me better than you. in fact thats what makes champions, in golf and every other sport. i used to feel sorry for players but now i much prefer to play 2k a round per person. im not here to cuss people ,just explain things. 1 if you aint got aggression you wont find it in you to adapt. 2 if you dont spend at LEAST 5-6 hours per day to golf -training/fitness/flexibilitytechnique/strategy/recovery you wont adapt. 3 i trained people since 19. 38 now
i,ll do a video and show you how easy the game is. if you havent got rhythm, forget it. give you a tip- EVERY shot you play for the next 6 months count from 10 to 0 at onset of swing ,with 0 striking the ball-practise until EVERYTHING you do after that becomes a habit. why? do you actually think that golf and tennis dont have players with mental illness. there are players out there with ADHD,compulsion disorders, and variants. thats why were better. enjoy your sanity. i HAVE TO PLAY GOLF.
man i dont even play and still hit 300+ dead straight and no worries. ALL THE PROBLEMS IN GOLF START IN YOUR HEAD. damm if you cant play with wrist break and a twist fro the hips (not the top half) then sort out flexibility. i also hit a tennis serve 121 mph. it aint hard fellas --- unless your born cack handed. like this fella...
It looks a damn good takeaway to me, well connected, no manipulation of the hands or wrists and everything bang in front of him as it was at address. As for casting, I can take the club outside, inside or zig zag between the two whilst doing a little pixie dance all the way up to the top , it doesn't mean i will cast it on the way down. This is such a simple, efficient and natural way of swinging a club and you dont need the strength and suppleness or a tour pro to use it. Great stuff Shawn.
so are you saying its fine to have the club that far inside the swing plane at the start of the backswing? this would more often than not result in them casting the club on an out to in line. if i was one of the 71 students being taught this i would not be happy.
I like the idea of 'catching the next swing' as it creates a sense of rhythm and can counteract tension, which is a killer. However i don't like the idea of 'a little nudge forward' to start the momentum of the swing. I think a lot of golfers, including myself (5 handicap), fight the problem of forward movement at the start of the backswing - resulting in too much weight in the left leg and difficulties completing a proper transference of weight to the right side.
I find you videos extremely instructional and helpful, but could you clear something up for me?
In your backswing, when you toss the arms up and the wrist hinges, does the right arm stay straight? It appears to but I can't see from the camera angle.
How would you compare your sequence to Ben Hogan's "Hands-Arms-Shoulders-Hips" take away? Looking at this video, it seems like the hips and body start first and that motion then take the arms for a ride. From reading the "five lessons", it seems like Mr Hogan starts his upper body first and the resistance ends up pulling the hips back.
Hey Hunter; very good observation; Remember Hogan was a very fast swinger of the club and his lower body would only catch up at the top of the backswing when he shifted back to his left side from behind; see "golf pro lesson downswing weightshift" and you will understand; Shawn
Thank you, I will check that out. I am a notorious "arms only hitter", so thinking about "hands and arms first" really messes me up. I end up going all arms the whole time. I like this method. It helps keep my whole body involved in the golf swing.
To get a complete picture, make sure you see "Golf Pro lesson Swing plane", "golf pro lesson perpetual motion drill", "golf pro lesson Golf Swing Medicine", "Golf Pro Lesson momentum toss"; then you will have your answers;
watched em' all pro. no mention why you're close to a good plane at 1:20-1:30, but when you make a fuller swinger you get so vertical your hands wrap around your head. seems like you talk the talk, but don't walk the walk
excuse me but are you in charge of a golf course? do you teach people the game? if you don't, your honestly not in a position to talk. especially over the internet.
i've been playing now for 3 years and i'm a mid to low 80's golfer. i was not taught to swing this way. i set my wrists first, then turn my shoulders. was i taught the right way? i hit it pretty good.
Great for you! Don't fix what is not broken! Remember that I teach over 80 people per week and the vast majority (90%) need to use this method which, by the way has been taught since the 1900's by people like Bobby Jones and Harvey Penick; oh and BTW, see my "golf pro lesson learn your golf machine" for the complete picture of why Payne Stewart was such a great player as his takeaway was the very same...Shawn
you can watch 10 golf lessons,on how to swing, you will get 10 different answers.best thing to do is find a big field near where you live and practice there, once your hitting the ball ok and in a straight line then your ready for the golf course.a lot of these golf videos are confusing and contradict each other.
You will see from all my videos that I do this for every shot!! very important aspect of the swing and you will understand from "golf pro lesson golf swing medicine" and Golf Pro lesson Momentum toss" part 1 and 2; Thanks for the great comment! Shawn
I am carlos from Mexico i have learned many stuff from you when i started to see all those good exellent videos i actually i am working as a caddie i started that job without know nothing, all that i know is thanks to you i am greatfull for that i actually receve many tourist from canada and i asked for you and they told me that they have heard something abaut you also my boss is the Pro from canada callgary and every week i look for the newest video please don´t stop of doing thosegreatvideo
Hey Shawn, thanks for the great videos! I have a question. I recently had my swing analyzed by a PGA pro. I set up to the ball like you said. Stacked on my left side. From the down the line view. The pro made the comment that my feet were square, but my knees, hips and shoulders were closed. He said that makes me take the club back too shallow. I watched the video and he is right. My take away is well under the shaft line of the club. What do you suggest? How do you counteract that?
It used to be a draw; but I love working the ball both ways and have simply adapted to each shot; but I always choose the bias for the shot; it will either be a small draw or a small fade which will end up being a straight shot; Shawn
Hi Shawn, love ur vids, watched all 140+ of them, have ur DVD (nice soundtrack btw) and have to say this is one of my favourite lessons...I think it would be great if u addressed "the shoulder turn" in one of ur video and maybe even some stretches to achieve a full shoulder turn...I've been struggling with this one (and up until recently had a "fake" one -dipping shoulders...On a closing note - thank u for all ur generous teaching - I shoot low 80's and am confident will get into 70's
Have a look at my "Golf Pro lesson Proper spine tilt angle" where I talk about the overswing; I would also get my DVD series where you will find all this info and more in a priority sequence so that you do not miss out on anything important that could "Short circuit" the whole deal; 4 hours for $40; you cannot miss! Shawn
Tell that to Bubba Watson; alL the commentators were going gaga over his takeaway which is EXACTLY LIKE I DESCRIBE HERE! Many more on Tour like this as well as the very best ball striker who ever lived, Moe Norman; you should revisit your sources carefully...I did! Shawn
Hi Shawn, my backswing was coming more around my body which is a flatback swing, do I take the club more straight up and down while turning my shoulders? Or is it a bit of both, it is the confusing on the take away that's making my swing either flat or upright
See my "golf pro lesson Swing Plane", "Golf Pro Lesson perpetual motion drill", "Golf Pro Lesson timing and tempo update" and "Golf Pro Lesson Momentum Toss" part 1 and 2; if you have any doubts after those, I don't know what to say...:)
Shawn I noticed that your wrist don't turn, so I tried this today and started to hit the ball better. Does rolling the wrist cause a hook? I think that was what I was doing.
It can...The wrists and forearms will turn by themselves when the right arm folds going back; see the "golf Pro Lesson arm motion" and also See what I wrote for jwsmith000 and wgharwell below!
Hi Shawn, I've incorporated this concept into my golf swing. The only problem is that I have big hands. I can't buy golf gloves, not even XXL. And I use almost the entire grip of the club. Because of all that "weight" or maybe what you would call powerful hands on the grip, when my club is supposed to go to "toe up" (1:00), it doesn't. My wrists don't really hinge until I get to the top of the swing. Any tips for the shreks of the world?
Shawn--I love your videos and feel like I "get it." I practice your "crane" analogy everyday and although I think everything is in sync, every time I take a full swing at a ball I roll my left wrist on the takeaway and my swing gets very flat, causing me to come over the top (as much as I try not to). I am sure you have seen this before. What recommendations do you have to fix it. BTW, I am ordering your DVD b/c I find your approach to instruction very intuitive.
The key is to not start from a static position; go to the "perpetual motion drill" video and see how the arms and club go into the backswing when coming from the follow through; get what I mean? Also see the "Golf Pro Lesson Timing and Tempo update" video;
hey shawn this is the best tip i have ever received in the golf world it helped me get on plain and added 20 yards to my drives having said that i have problems with keeping my clubs parallel with my shoulders at the top of my backswing like john daley and phil which one of your videos would help me out the most to cure this bad habit btw i have a new video of me hitting a driver please take a look at it and tell me what you think thanks Josh
Shawn: I recently moved down to Austin, Texas. To my wonderful discovery, I ran into a man name Bobby. I always try to be a student of golf and better myself as humbly as I can. Bobby said that you two know each other real well. Anyways, today was the first day I used your swing technique. It's going to take awhile to perfect, but I am loving it already. Bobby doesn't beat around the bush, and was very kind in helping out for the love of the game. I am excited to keep learning
I am working very hard on keeping my left arm "long" and getting the left shoulder moving at the initial part of takeaway. I normally bend my right elbow too early and then have no shoulder turn going back. Thinking "one-piece" really helps me, AND not letting my right elbow bend too early in the takeaway.
It can go up to 6 weeks to get down under; depending on the timing of the different flights it needs to get on to get there; it will normally take a couple of weeks to get into the US depending on how long it takes to through the border...:) And sometimes you can get lucky and get it within the week! It is worth waiting for though...Shawn
Just a question regarding your left handed swing. I swing the golfclub right handed but i am a left handed person i throw the ball, skipping stones etc with my left. What dominates your left swing as you are right handed. i get the skipping stone drill but i wish i didnt have to throw it the wrong way boy its ugly with my right hand.....
this is my fav video. I started playing golf in Jan this year after 6 years not playing. got a 28 handicap(my lowest ever was 18 back then) and have used this nearly everyday i have lost 14 shots in 6 weeks and had 2 awesome rounds of 76 to win medal day with a net 53 and 75 on the weekend for a net 57. I love the wrecking ball..
This video solved so many of my problems. I am much more consistent and the misses are not bad either. I realized that you got to have a good backswing and set up at the top to be able to get to the ball on the bottom. Many thanks.

Shawn, I am doing what you show in the video but my clubface is closed at the top. Is my grip to strong?

@LoganCarr1 Hi Logan;
It can be your way of hinging the wrists; they should hinge on both snuff boxes simultaneously and you should not try to keep the back of your left wrist flat; see "grip 2 wrist hinge; shawn clement" and "knife the grip; shawn clement" Shawn

Shawn, you use a one piece takeaway here (I assume!). What do you think of using a right forearm takeaway (eg Stuart Appleby). I find it easier to control the length of my backswing and keep the club on plane if I let the right arm dominate. What is your opinion on this? Cheers

@cockywatchman1976 See answers I gave cpbutler567 and Golfpro411
clemshaw 1 year ago
I have only one remark. There is to much hips movement in the backswing in the video. The backswing should be mostly provided by the upper body rotation, the right leg should stay so firm as possible.
RobertFromHere 1 year ago
@RobertFromHere Buzzzzzz; wrong answer!!
This is so typical of someone not knowing what is under the hood of the human body; College golf, mini tours, and all the top tours in the world have an epidemic of back troubles...ALL BECAUSE OF WHAT YOU SAY HERE; the spine has BUILT IN STOPPERS IN EVERY VERTEBRAE CALLED FACETS that ARE DESIGNED TO PREVENT THE SPINE FROM TWISTING; which means that the hips are the turn table for the swing; please see "golf pro lesson learn your golf machine" video!
clemshaw 1 year ago
@clemshaw The hips should start to work in the backswing, but not during the takeaway. The takeaway should be done only by the upper body. If the golfer will tend to start the backswing rotation from the hips (which will happen by a lot of beginners, because its easier), you have to compensate this movements during the downswing and you will hit a lot of wrong balls.

hi about the closed position when you start your backswing when you turn your sholders and hips it brings it in a toe up position naturaly and when you come through. I think you have to think abot making your arms straight going back
Golfpro411 1 year ago

WOW ! It's added a lot of effortless power to my swing. you seem to hav equal rotation in your hips and your shoulders not the usually taught 45 /90 degree.maybe i have a wrong perception of your video
MrMinorman 1 year ago
@MrMinorman Super important comment!! See "golf pro lesson learn your golf machine" and then you will understand why I came out with "golf pro lesson x out the x factor" which was designed from a misinformed perception and opinion of how the body is made; it is one of the learning curves we all go through as teachers; some choose to defend their theories instead of admitting a mistake; shoulders only have on average 20 degrees of range of motion; 90 degrees is from a different planet...
clemshaw 1 year ago
hi shawn. love your videos. experienced alot of lower back pain lately after a lot of golf. watched your crane video and you seem to go against the 45 for hips and 90 for shoulders and you seem to have similar rotation in both.maybe its a false assumption by me but it takes a lot of pressure off my back.if you can comment thanks.
MrMinorman 1 year ago
@MrMinorman When you see "golf pro lesson learn your golf machine", you will see that it is about the pelvis and rib cage turning on top of the hips; this is necessary to allow the arm-club unit to swing freely in both directions; see "golf pro lesson how to coordinate arm motion with body turn" and "golf pro lesson stop crashing" for more!

Shawn, your left wrist though you are not manipulating it at all, is flat at the top. I have a problem over roating the wrists in the takeaway but cannot seem to get this down.
NikeGolf118 1 year ago
@NikeGolf118 I am guessing you are taking the club inside and rolling the wrists? What helps me to get the club on plane is to keep the left wrist cupped on the backswing and get the wrists cocking early. But remember to stay wide! The key is to video your swing from behind and just try different things until you work out how it feels to swing it on plane then just stick with that feeling.

The person who asks regarding why Shawn isn't on tour is not only grammatically challenged a little, he's also a jerk. Does he not know that only 125 people in the ENTIRE WORLD are on the tour? One observation. We see on tour telecasts(specially Ladies) that the takeaway is very very slow. Does not seem to be a toss at all. How do we reconcile this with inertia and arms getting lifted with the body and not on their own.

This is a great video-Shawn thanks, it has helped me with a little issue I have.
My other big problem is re routing the hands to an outside plane-the over the top move (Bsically the opposite that sergio does, it makes me come in very steep and hit it all over the place).
What are the best drills for this?
cockywatchman1976 1 year ago
"golf pro lesson perpetual motion drill" and "golf pro lesson timing and tempo update"; letting the momentum from the follow through going into the backswing track the arm-club unit into the proper plane so that it can fall back down the plane to the target; see also "golf pro lesson arms falling down plane" Shawn
clemshaw 1 year ago
Shawn, I have a question re.takeaway.
Cheers

You have given your tuoughts on a question:" In Gravity golf they talk about "heaving the club back""
Can you elaborate as it seems very very critical
mjs0039 1 year ago
Ugh. I'm still taking the club back too far inside, leading to over the top and all the problems that follow. Even doing the perpetual motion drill, the club swings around to the inside, not up and down.
While I've got you here, my hands are also releasing too early, causing the ball to go way to high even though my contact is pretty good.
Thoughts?
Thanks
reif99 1 year ago
Yes; see the "golf pro lesson medicine ball drill" and use perpetual motion with that drill; understand that the arm-club unit tracks it's own arc and should never rely on manipulation or the body for placement; it just tracks freely; see also "golf pro lesson allow the arms to swing" and "golf pro lesson timing and tempo update"...Shawn
clemshaw 1 year ago
Hi Shawn, It is about the intensity of the back swing. In the perpetual motion drill one is using the momentum to come back into the back swing like the crane smoothly. However when it comes to swinging in a shot, even using a waggle(as in video-"Tempo and Timing") the intensity does not seem enough to levitate the arms unless the move of the butt is quite fast and almost jerky. This does not bring about a slow and smooth back swing. Can you please comment on this. Thanks and have a great day.

Have a look at my "golf pro lesson winter drill"; it feels very similar to that! :) In Gravity golf they talk about "heaving the club back"...Shawn

Great Lesson. Question..What starts the forward swing ? Do you get a feeling of the upper still going back as the bottom starts to move forward ? Thats the way a crane would swing a wrecking ball..the boom will start moving forward before the ball stops going back causing a drag motion (lag)
golfdaddie69 1 year ago
Yes; like that boom, it is in response to the predicted momentum coming back down; it must be instinctive and not mechanical; see "golf pro lesson perpetual motion drill" and "golf pro lesson momentum toss" part 1 and 2; Shawn
clemshaw 1 year ago
Shawn, thanks for all the great instruction. Do you have any advice on how to keep the back leg from locking/straightening in the back swing?
Thanks,
Keith
PouncePony 2 years ago
@PouncePony,
Straightening of the back leg usually indicates a collapse into your forward side.

Shawn, do you have any youtube vids on the right foot staying down thru the swing?
mattisagolfer 2 years ago
Yes; you need to feel how the right foot stays on the ground through impact with the feet together drill as well as the uphill shots, ball below the feet shots and fairway bunker shots; the key is to feel how you can whip the club with effortless power without needing to use the right side! I have videos on all these subjects! Shawn

Eddiebutt1 's tip is not bad! clemshaw 2 years ago
stern,
Same thing happened to me, contact was super, great speed through the ball but it got me swinging inside to out with a shut face. I think it is also related to the hips kind of reversing at the top and then if I slide forward you get major plane shift to the right. Great stuff by Mr. Clement though.

I feel like a moron.

in fact the takeaway starts firstly in ball of your left foot to counter balance the pull of your left forefinger. most people over analyse but forget basics.

Great stuff Shawn.
footstink35 2 years ago
so are you saying its fine to have the club that far inside the swing plane at the start of the backswing? this would more often than not result in them casting the club on an out to in line. if i was one of the 71 students being taught this i would not be happy.
alexg113 2 years ago
I like the idea of 'catching the next swing' as it creates a sense of rhythm and can counteract tension, which is a killer. However i don't like the idea of 'a little nudge forward' to start the momentum of the swing. I think a lot of golfers, including myself (5 handicap), fight the problem of forward movement at the start of the backswing - resulting in too much weight in the left leg and difficulties completing a proper transference of weight to the right side.
davearmchair 2 years ago
Dear Shawn
I find you videos extremely instructional and helpful, but could you clear something up for me?
In your backswing, when you toss the arms up and the wrist hinges, does the right arm stay straight? It appears to but I can't see from the camera angle.

You mean the left arm? Yes, very important and you can see my "golf pro lesson arm motion" and "golf pro lesson left arm straight?" for that one;
Thanks for the question and kind words! Shawn

HunterDT 2 years ago
Hey Hunter; very good observation; Remember Hogan was a very fast swinger of the club and his lower body would only catch up at the top of the backswing when he shifted back to his left side from behind; see "golf pro lesson downswing weightshift" and you will understand; Shawn

Thank you, I will check that out. I am a notorious "arms only hitter", so thinking about "hands and arms first" really messes me up. I end up going all arms the whole time. I like this method. It helps keep my whole body involved in the golf swing.

I like you i like your lesson.

if you check the club on your backswing it is a long way inside the correct swing plane, a mistake most golfers make. i dont like this video

wondering why this guy gets so steep and handsy too, with such a focus on body leading hands/arms/club shaft

To get a complete picture, make sure you see "Golf Pro lesson Swing plane", "golf pro lesson perpetual motion drill", "golf pro lesson Golf Swing Medicine", "Golf Pro Lesson momentum toss"; then you will have your answers;

watched em' all pro. no mention why you're close to a good plane at 1:20-1:30, but when you make a fuller swinger you get so vertical your hands wrap around your head. seems like you talk the talk, but don't walk the walk
fredwadegolf 2 years ago
excuse me but are you in charge of a golf course? do you teach people the game? if you don't, your honestly not in a position to talk. especially over the internet.

he's probably a fine player, better than other instructors. im just wondering why he doesn't do what he says
fredwadegolf 2 years ago
i've been playing now for 3 years and i'm a mid to low 80's golfer. i was not taught to swing this way. i set my wrists first, then turn my shoulders. was i taught the right way? i hit it pretty good.
stackleft 2 years ago
Great for you! Don't fix what is not broken! Remember that I teach over 80 people per week and the vast majority (90%) need to use this method which, by the way has been taught since the 1900's by people like Bobby Jones and Harvey Penick; oh and BTW, see my "golf pro lesson learn your golf machine" for the complete picture of why Payne Stewart was such a great player as his takeaway was the very same...Shawn
clemshaw 2 years ago
you can watch 10 golf lessons,on how to swing, you will get 10 different answers.best thing to do is find a big field near where you live and practice there, once your hitting the ball ok and in a straight line then your ready for the golf course.a lot of these golf videos are confusing and contradict each other.
ibanez777vbk 2 years ago
so during your actual swing, you rock forward a bit before taking the club back? or was that still part of the drill?
SDRE1005 2 years ago
You will see from all my videos that I do this for every shot!! very important aspect of the swing and you will understand from "golf pro lesson golf swing medicine" and Golf Pro lesson Momentum toss" part 1 and 2; Thanks for the great comment! Shawn

How do you counteract that?

sup shawn! love ur videos man! i was wondering, what is your natural ball flight? straight, draw or fade?
oh and btw, how is the weather like in toronto in the summer?
dopekr 2 years ago
It used to be a draw; but I love working the ball both ways and have simply adapted to each shot; but I always choose the bias for the shot; it will either be a small draw or a small fade which will end up being a straight shot; Shawn
clemshaw 2 years ago
Hi Shawn, love ur vids, watched all 140+ of them, have ur DVD (nice soundtrack btw) and have to say this is one of my favourite lessons...I think it would be great if u addressed "the shoulder turn" in one of ur video and maybe even some stretches to achieve a full shoulder turn...I've been struggling with this one (and up until recently had a "fake" one -dipping shoulders...On a closing note - thank u for all ur generous teaching - I shoot low 80's and am confident will get into 70's

Shawn,
Great vid, I am now the crane operator.. works really well.
How does one stop the ball before it gets too far? Ive been told my back is hungry and "eating" the club!!!
skynetop 2 years ago
Have a look at my "Golf Pro lesson Proper spine tilt angle" where I talk about the overswing; I would also get my DVD series where you will find all this info and more in a priority sequence so that you do not miss out on anything important that could "Short circuit" the whole deal; 4 hours for $40; you cannot miss!

Or is it a bit of both, it is the confusing on the take away that's making my swing either flat or upright
eddiebutt1 2 years ago
Hey eddie!
Thanks for the comment! Shawn

Ok thanks and the DVD rocks. I really like the putting advice about the grip and reading the putts from behind the ball.
scott4525 2 years ago
Shawn I noticed that your wrist don't turn, so I tried this today and started to hit the ball better. Does rolling the wrist cause a hook? I think that was what I was doing.
scott4525 2 years ago
Hey Scott!

Any tips for the shreks of the world?
jwsmith000 2 years ago
PS ball flight is really good with this tip. As long as I keep my head still throughout, I hit the ball well with a very beautiful slight fade.
jwsmith000 2 years ago
Shawn--I love your videos and feel like I "get it." I practice your "crane" analogy everyday and although I think everything is in sync, every time I take a full swing at a ball I roll my left wrist on the takeaway and my swing gets very flat, causing me to come over the top (as much as I try not to). I am sure you have seen this before. What recommendations do you have to fix it. BTW, I am ordering your DVD b/c I find your approach to instruction very intuitive.
wgharwell 2 years ago
The key is to not start from a static position; go to the "perpetual motion drill" video and see how the arms and club go into the backswing when coming from the follow through; get what I mean? Also see the "Golf Pro Lesson Timing and Tempo update" video;

Excellent tip, i had problems with being frozen at address, the use of momentum really helps with consistency of shots. Thanks

hey shawn this is the best tip i have ever received in the golf world it helped me get on plain and added 20 yards to my drives having said that i have problems with keeping my clubs parallel with my shoulders at the top of my backswing like john daley and phil which one of your videos would help me out the most to cure this bad habit btw i have a new video of me hitting a driver please take a look at it and tell me what you think thanks Josh

Hi Shawn i actually ment the youtube clip, but i ordered your dvd today cant wait.
many thanks Paul

do you no how long the dvd normally takes to get to Australia? been over 2 weeks and cant wait to watch it
cheers Paul
paulmoorfoot 2 years ago
It can go up to 6 weeks to get down under; depending on the timing of the different flights it needs to get on to get there; it will normally take a couple of weeks to get into the US depending on how long it takes to through the border...:) And sometimes you can get lucky and get it within the week! It is worth waiting for though...Shawn

Hi Shawn. i got the dvd yesterday Thanks.
Many thanks Paul
