  • Beck destroyed this song- surprising, cause i like him!

  • apparently pomplamoose did not invent the videosong...

  • this song is better if you imagine that the man he's waiting for is Santa

  • He's just fucking around. Jesus, don't you people have any fun?

  • no good...okay ... have you tried something for you but it is not better in other songs ..... .....

  • Holy shit, that was great, and I don't fucking care whether or not it's out of tune.

  • HEY BECK, YOU'RE SHIT IS OUT OF TUNE.

oh that's just the the shtick of the song. carry on.

  • enticingly weird :)

  • I love the velvets, and I love Beck... this kinda works. Good job Beck.

  • Can't blame the guy for having a stab at it.

He did it for the love of the music, it's not like he released it for money or anything.

  • Beck is a god-damned genius.

  • this is not safe for a yaoi fangirl to listen to.

    in short, great job, Beck!!!

  • he's waiting for his scientology man to sell him some more high priced L.Ron Hubbard books

  • I like Beck a shit load! Sea Change and Mutations are classics. I like him to do whatever he wants. I am always going to listen to the original though...

  • Just watched this again and to be honest, it still dosen´t convince me.

Deconstructing a song is one thing, but this just sounds uninspired and lifeless to me. And it has the same arrangements as some of the other covers.

Compare this to the version I´ve uploaded of John Cale performing this song (Rockpalast 1983&84) or a different version femmeBanale uploaded (Barcelona1985)

Maybe then some of you will understand my case.

  • @ForARide It's hard to sound inspired next to Lou Reed. I don't hold anything against you for your opinion, though.

  • brillant so far ahead

  • There's something about this cover that I really like... can't quite put my finger on what that is, but it just seems to work for me, and I'm old enough to remember the original by the Velvet Underground. Have heard many covers of this classic since, and this one can certainly stand with some of the best. Well done.

  • Classic cover! =) its great to hear beck with that kind of guitars n strings again!

  • If he covered this song exactly like the way velvet did, people complain that he doesn't have style.

If he covered this song in a very innovative and creative way, people complain that he's murdering the song.

Stop being a smartass guys, just chill and enjoy.

    Remember:

"Smart has the brain, but stupid has the balls.

Smart critics, but stupid CREATES." - - quoted from a random poster on the street

  • i think lou reed would be proud that beck didnt simply ape the song completely. the velvets were all about innovation and creativity. that is what beck represents in an age of watered down garbage of music. if only more musicans were influenced by the velvets

  • the video effects are cool... what vj software was used?

  • Didn't know there were any sacred cows in rock n' roll. I happen to like Beck's take on Velvet Underground. I also like Velvet Underground's take on VU. So what? It doesn't take balls to cover or record anything--just a willingness to do something and the recording studio to do it.

  • vlevet undergorund is fucking god damn insane. seriously they are fucking out of this piece of shit world

  • sorry Becky, I don't buy what yer selling.

  • @tejaspics yer hard o herin ya basterd

  • @becksongs No he knows good music and you don't.

Try the Velvet Underground version with Lou Reed.

The Beck version is not listenable.

"Now go home and get your fuckin' shine box!"

  • @fntime Maybe you didn't hear but I don't do shines anymore!!

  • @TheDragon2k Touche, you are funny! (lol)

  • @tejaspics he's not selling but buying, hence waiting...

  • @tejaspics That's funny, I got it and it was free for me.

  • incredibly ballsy by Beck to try covering something like this, but i think he pulls it off brilliantly...looking forward to seeing him when he tours again

  • Whoa what happened lol

  • Hey, white boy, what you doin' uptown?

Hey, white boy, you chasin' our women around?

Oh pardon me sir, it's the furthest from my mind

I'm just Lookin' Forward To Two dear friend of mine...

    ( Lou sings so,!!)

    -Beck either way awesome too!!

  • @warmonotan

I'm just looking for a dear dear friend of mine.

  • i whant this album on vinyl ...

  • great version ... love the crazy sounds from the chinese violin...

  • Beck is tha shit..

  • grandious version - !!!

  • beck proves he's american by kicking ass everyday. seriously? all these posts about blah blah blah....he's the king of hannukuh robot science so you watch your fingers.

  • I like Beck...but he just trashed a great song...I realize they do these album covers in one day...but hells bells this just sucks!

  • this is poor

  • I love this fucking shit. At first, I didn't like it at all, but half-way thru the brilliance of it dawned on me.

  • @mussman717word

Actually, that's kind of how I thought of the original version, lol. They're both excellent.

  • Comment removed

  • I like to hear what Lou has to say about this project, not to mention the rest of the V.U.

  • this bring so much shame to this song. go ahead every one attack me but this fuckin sucks

  • @spam1iam ...to each their own, but i think allen ginsberg would have been proud.. the eclectic coffee house flair of the poetry of any of the old beats, allen or jack in particular, would match the flair of the notes of this composition...albeit modern day coffee haus...it's only meant for a few to understand & nothing else matters. consider dead weather's WCPAEB 'child of a few hours.' all these people r doing is jamming, with their own spin, which translates to a compli- ment to the original

  • funky!

  • transports the mesmerized to the nether regions of their psyche while imploding their sensory cortex

  • he managed to make it sound different, without stomping all over your memory of the original. which is a tough balancing act. I like it. but I wouldn't, like, put it on my iPod and hear it every day.

  • I wish they'd make Eno's "Taking tiger mountain by strategy"....... and Can's "Tago--Mago"....... uuuufffffffff!!!!

  • i'd like to hear record club do rain dogs by tom waits.

    that would be amazing.

  • Bottom line: this song (and really, the whole experiment of Record Club in general) is for the truest of Beck's followers. I think a lot of people pick him up at various points in his career, and expect similarity between albums (or projects). Record Club is showcasing his versatility on complete overdrive.

I mean, he even states in the description that everyone detuned their instruments just to see what would happen. The result: a honky tonk carnival of dissonance.

  • honestly,i don't like that

  • they've changed it, im not sure if any of you guys have actually heard the velvet underground, but they were often totally unlistenable. and always innovative. so beck et al are doing the most velvet underground thing they could

  • I love the concept of this...

but I really hated this song, sunday morning was alright

  • thats the most retarded thing i ever heard, if u dont like im waiting for the man then u dont like velvet underground

  • LOL if I don't like the BECK version then I don't like Velvet Underground?

  • u might wanna be a little more clear about how u say that next time

  • Yeah I'm just commenting on the beck video, it's a real difficult concept to grasp. Did you assume the 50 other comments were about the original version for no reason too?

  • "but i really hated this song, sunday morning was alright"

  • "I love the concept of this" the "concept" being Beck covering a whole album every week. I really hated THIS song, and sunday morning was alright. AKA I like the concept but the execution was bad. WHY WOULD I BE TALKING ABOUT ANYTHING BUT BECK

  • great cover. reinterpreted the spirit for now. without styling.

  • @ideotek

...or melody. Or any of the right lyrics. Or right chords.

You're right- it's very "now." Which helps explain why "Now" sucks so bad...

  • LOVE IT!!!

Does anyone know if Beck is planning on releasing a purchasable version of the Record Club experiment? I'd like to be able to buy the full version on a CD.

  • The best tracks on this album are the ones that have at least a couple of instruments in tune.

I know that the whole oceanic overdubs of out-of-tune instruments & fucked-off vocals is a "thing" right now, but really- once you get to that point it's just bad. It's not abstract or oblique or postmodern or whatever; it's just lame (and more to the point, it's distracting. but then that's teh whole idea, isn't it?).

That being said, All Tomorrow's Parties is fucking brilliant.

  • Hahaha

  • the velvet underground's guitars were out of tune half the time on purpose bro guy. maybe it's the "thing" to do in your head, but in reality your generalizing a whole bunch of different approaches to rock music happening right, because it needs to stay fresh to be rock and roll.

but yeah lou reed's guitars in something like venus in furs, just listen to it or read an interview. out of tune

  • Okay, I didn't think it required taht much explaining, but when I simply wrote "in tune" I meant in tune WITH EACH OTHER. VU downtuned their instruments from standard tuning, but they were all IN TUNE WITH EACH OTHER. It's a basic rule of ensemble performance (and common sense). Unless you're all about the Fuck-off / we're-too-cool-to-care-enough-to-tune-so-whatever aesthetic of music. Which was my other point. And it's THEIR "thing" to do. As evidenced by the recording above.

  • like...you completely explained it in the 2nd half of your post. i know you were just trying to be a douche, but thats really whats goin down.

  • is there a record club lp or ep somewhere?!

  • What's all this about? Does it have anything to do with the Beck/Thom Yorke I'm Set Free? Can it be purchased?

  • brilliant.

  • genius as always...my crack dealer will love this!

  • I love how this is so much more Beck than his cover of 'Sunday Morning' Great cover!

  • can't wait to hear Heroin!!

  • NO kidding!

  • People should know what this project is all about. The group of musicians collectively chose material to re-interpret and then they recorded the FIRST unrehearsed take, all impovised and spontaneous.....

  • I have to say that I really like Beck very much and practically all his work, but The Velvet underground is one of the most important bands in my life and I have to say that I'm very disappointed in this cover

    sorry

  • He's got a pair for trying to cover it as others have stated.

To get the Velvet feel, it doesn't mean have a different guitar tuning, a bad ass personality, or have a German blonde singer in your band.

Its truly about making it your own. Good job, Beck.

  • @AirHendrix91 take this guy's word for it because he's important

  • @natedog2069 Trollmonster ftl

  • @AirHendrix91 sarcasm does not necessarilly equal trolling

  • These guys are genius just for daring to do this, I loved the results!! I can´t wait to listen more.

  • Okay I give up guys, trying to figure out who wrote what comment here is impossible if youdon't read all the comments in order from the beginning. Some guy(don't remember the name)wrote an even stupider comment than the other fool.If someone does a Beatles cover, does it mean they want to be Paul McCartney LOL! man the dumb comments on here make me want to close my acct, but the music is way too great

  • Seeing how these comments threads are so disjointed sometime my comment was for that admiralmoses creep, in case it wasn't obvious! I had to read all dumb comments myself to see the realtime sequence

    Beck RULZ!

  • woooooohoooo! what a great song!

  • As expected with online networks, some pretty silly discourse on here. Why people waste their time make ficticious assertions and idiotic comments on things they know nothing about always baffles me? What a waste of time...

This is a new collective, improvised side project folks, go to his site and learn the details of the concept. They really captured the dissonant vibe of the song, thnks for posting

  • And how much time did you waste posting this particular comment? Hmm?

  • Congrats chump, top marks for showcasing your ignorance and futility. Here's a radical revealation for your small mind Einstein, you can't stop people from contradicting false propaganda aka/b.s,, and sharing legitimate information and love for the arts.

Best of luck with your fascist mindset.....

  • Oh. I see how it is. You have the nerve to call me ignorant, eh?

  • Wow is your syntax ever atrocious! Are you 5 years old by any chance?

Not nerve Einstein........PROOF, evidenced by YOUR own words. Now run along and look up the definiton of ignorance, you might learn something despite yourself.

ROFL, now if you would kindly stop wasting my time,

    Thank you ever-so kindly

  • get a brain, moran.

  • Atrocious spelling as well.

    Tsk, tsk....

  • "ROFL, now if you would kindly stop wasting my time,

    Thank you ever-so kindly"

    In your own words, ma'am.

  • Zoot alors...( I don't expect you to understand any other languages, lord only knows you have a 3 years old's command of english)I guess you need to yank out the dictionary AGAIN for that one!

Try this on for size dimwit; go bother someone else, and get a life s'il te plait.

    domo arigato

  • How about you get a life, and not be bothered by me? Though, it would seem that you enjoy being pretentious and that you must really enjoy arguing for no real benefit than sustaining your own 'precious' ego.

As well, it can be easily assumed that you voted all my comments down yourself.

Congratulations. I do hope that you are proud of yourself.

  • Whoa dude you got pretty owned by that guy! I'm only 13 but you're not very bright and besides anyone who hates Beck must hate music, Beck is the shiz fo sure

  • ..."anyone who hates beckmust hate music"...

truer words were never spoken (or in this case typed)

  • Funny, I always say "If you don't like beck, then I don't like you." >.^

  • ppl who dont like beck arent ppl at all...

  • High 5 to that.

  • Comment removed

  • right on! i agree 100%

  • thank u man!

  • This is a comments post about the musician Beck, why do you pollute a music post with dumb comments insulting tuber's right to comment, which is what the post is for in the first place! It's not your business what the 50million tubers do and you contribute to nothing positive or constructive for that matter?. If you hate Beck you are obviously only coming on here to incite hate and be a cyber troll. What I really don't get is why target a Beck post, he's such a cool guy. TAke it elsewhere man.

  • Is the user LIFEONPLANETBECK actually Beck?

  • If it's possible to be dumber than stupid, you've done it, why do you hang around a beck post when you obviously know nothing about the guy's music? People like you wreck YouTube wasting people's time,CAn't you find somewhere else to play your childish games?

  • This series of posts really has no relation to Becks music, so I don't know why you would say that i 'obviously know nothing about the guy's music'. I do, however, know where you're coming from, though.

  • Oh and for the educational benefit of that ignorass further down below, John Cale can't cover the material he wrote HIMSELF, you stupid jackhole, grow a brain and try to make an intelligent comment based on reality, too much of a stretch for you I'd imagine

For those who actually care about music and art, you can check out Beck's site for details of this music club project....they collectively untuned all their instruments to play this!

  • i think is a good cover...like a tribute...he dosnt have to prove anything

  • he's not trying to prove anything.

  • Are you for real? What an IGNORANT comment! FYI idiot, John Cale was a founding member of the Velvets, and every band on the planet has covered their tunes, along with multitudes of other classic material.

You obviously know NOTHING of the origins of this project....Educate yourself here bozo; the BAND he's playing with collectively vote on an artist's music to improvise a spontaneous interpretation..

I know...you're just another cyber troll inciting hate, take a number jackhole..

  • Cool down man! I was just asking questions. There´s no reason to insult other people only because they have other opinions. I think your behavior to be very imature, there are civilizted ways of discussing issues. I´d expect more from a Beck fan than pure intolarence!

  • Pretty lame pal, you can b.s.till doomsday, however the fact remains...your ignorant, false, and insulting, comment is THERE for everyone to read. Try as you may to evade ownership of it....your pathetic attempt doesn't change the fact that you are contradicting YOUR OWN words. If the shoe fits...as the expression goes.

You might consider cultivating some critical thinking skills before you spew nonsense. Beck and others have been covering the Velvets long before you were born

  • man that was just a bad comment yo

  • @ForARide It's just a cover you idiot.
