  • I already know how to replace it but where do you buy the parts?

  • I just replaced the motherboard in a Dell 1300 laptop with the mb from a donor unit. Everything bolted right up but now I can't get the original HDD to slide into the connector in the HDD bay. Looking at the old MB, the connector looks just like the new MB. The HDD carriage looks the same as well. Any idea what might be causing this. The HDD fits in the bay but won't quite fully seat. I've used a reasonable amount of force but I don't want to break anything.

  • will that let me play minecraft on it if i do that?

  • i have a newer dell laptop that has a cracked screen can i buy a shell and put my old hard drive into it? i dont want to lose my data but to replace the screen is like $

  • Hi, My Dell Studio 1537 laptop's hard drive failure is imminent. Could you please advise which hard drive i should go for (size, speed etc) ? and, is the procedure for changing the hdd is same or different?

  • how about using a usb to ide cable to transfer the information stored on the drive to another laptop... i recently bought one of these cables for my dell inspiron 5100 so that i could transfer the data off of that on to my macbook pro! the cord i bought originally says it fits any ata/ide drive but it does not work with mine! why?

  • Hey guys, I really need your help, here's my problem my DELL INSPIRON 1525, is damaged, I dropped it on the ground near the hard drive, and now it makes a weird self repeating sound and it says this whenever i turn it on: "internal hard disk drive not found, to resolve this issue, try to reseat the drive.", tried that and still the funny self repeating sound and still the damn error message, please help me, thank you.

  • u can replace the dell hard drive with a non dell hardrive?

  • @XxheartlessAngelxX most hdd (hard drive disk) are compatible with any components, size is what you will want to look out for

  • your a freemason >_<

  • I just replaced mine, so easy. Thanks for the help!

  • Great idea, thanks!

  • This is looks easy. I think it would work for a Dell Inspiron 600m too. Any advice on what brand and size of hard drive? The original one was a Hitachi 30gb drive and I would like to at least double it. Since I can't find it at Dell.com, I can get it from Ebay.

  • @wzb3 - It would probably be cheaper to buy a bigger drive - around a 120 or 250GB, since these are the standard nowadays.

  • @iftibashir Yer! Personally I would push it to a 500gb if you want to future proof!

  • When I turn my laptop on it says read failure on internal harddrive can someone help?

  • Thanx alot man, you saved me from castrating my laptop to find the damn hard drive!

    10 out of 10! Thanks!!!

  • This helped a lot,thanks =D

  • what did u mean by 2:43 plz?

will we lose the date after removing/replacing ?

  • @mnb222 - When changing your hard drive, the replacement drive will have no data on it. Therefore you will need to re-install your operating system and all software etc from scratch.

  • i am getting the gtx 260m graphics card and the intel core i7-720 with the 4gb dual channel ddr3 1333mhz!!! and 1920x1080 hd screen is this good together?

  • our dell inspiron 1200 won't boot the OS. I've tried several options including safe mode, it just freezes where it normally should start loading windows. I ran a diagnostics test too and it fails...and repeatedly plays these sounds. Anyway i'm gnna try removin the hdd and fit it back again, shouldn't be too different from this vid - might work.

  • Same thing happened to me. That's a sure sign of hard disk failure.

  • My harddrive dead on my dell and I would like to replace it myself> what is the best type of hardrive to get or does it matter its a latitdud d630 . Thanks in advance :)

  • @MochaSmooth247 - Go for a Seagate Momentus. They are pretty quiet in operation and also run cooler then usual. Cant beat em'!

If you want better then a hard drive, but dont want to spend as much on a SSD drive - check out the Momentus XT - it comes in between both.....

  • @iftibashir thanks so much.

  • @iftibashir Got I have a Dell Studio 1735 what should what should I replace my old one with Hope u can give me advice thanks in advance

  • Thanks, buddy. That's a big help.

  • Where did you get the cylinder shaped screwdriver? My harddrive crashed and I bought a new one, but I couldn't take the back out. I took it to best buy and they could'nt remove the screwdriver either! So now my laptop and new harddrive is just sitting in a corner because of the stupid screws!

  • My set is specific for laptops.

  • I tried to make my new hard disk work on my laptop, It says that no hard disk has been found while booting. It says something about checking a cable. I dont have the OS Windows XP cd with me. I have backed it up on my external drive though. So, please, tell me what I am doing wrong.

  • If it states no HDD found - then the issue could be:

    1. HDD not properly installed.

    2. HDD is faulty.

    3. BIOs settings are incorrect for the HDD. Ensure it is set to auto-detect.

  • mine got blue screen does any one know how to fix it

  • it is much much harder to change ur hard drive on a mc than on a dell REALLY

  • Yes, thats because Apple restrict what you can do with a MAC. Everything is built in. Apple like you to go through them for upgrades, so they can charge you!

  • I bought a WD Scorpio Blue PATA/IDE for a Dell Latitude D810. After replacing the hard drive I realized that the new hd doesn't connect to the motherboard. The older HD had a outreaching piece of plastic with metal to connect it but the new one doesn't connect, though it should. What should I do?

  • @Ryguy1450 return it, get the proper type, u need IDE harddrive, not sata hard drive.

  • you just change it and your pc starts working? or do I have to back up my system first?

  • No. You need to back up your data before replacing the drive. Then you need to reinstall the operating system and all your programs, after which you restore your backed up data.

  • I'm trying to delete things on my c drive and alot of stuff its not allowing me to delete. its saying I need permission to perform this task.

  • Are you the administrator of the system?

  • naw someone who owned it before me is because I bought it from a pawn shop

  • I would reformat and complete a fresh install in that case.

  • Thanks u really helped me but do u know how to change ram on dell latitude?

  • I'd suggest that the easiest way is to probably install it under the cover for extra RAM that this guy briefly mentions in this vid...

  • Thanks man... Great job!!!!

  • ummm i need help my pc wont go on to the part were you log on to windows. you know.\

it just gos to the intel inside thingy then it should go to the log in part but it just has a '-" think like a _ at the top left oner of the screen help plz...

  • You need to install the operating system - or reinstall it, since it seems some of your boot files are either missing or corrupt.

  • Any issues with the image are down to one of the following:

    1. Display settings

    2. Faulty GPU

    3. Faulty screen

Try connecting the laptop to an external display and see if the issue continues. If it does, its probably your GPU. If it is OK on an external screen, the issue lies with your laptop screen.

  • HI, how would i install the device drivers on again?

    Thanks

  • You'll need the discs that came with each device

  • Thanks for this! Made it super easy!

  • I actually had mine changed before the end of the video (really!)

  • is there a way to tell out my old hard drive and use it as a external hard drive on my new laptop??

  • Yes, you can purchase a HDD enclosure, or caddy, which you install the HDD into and can use as a USB device.

  • just buy an external encloser on ebay for about 5$

  • ok thank u sooo basicly if it fits it should work. it wont blow the laptop or the hard drive up would it? looool :)

  • Correct!

  • can you replace any hard drive with another hard drive from another laptop.

basicaly i v got a nec laptop and a dell one and i want to replace my dell's hard drive with the nec hard drive in the dell laptop is that possible?

  • Yes - as long as the drive is the same type - either an IDE or a SATA.

An IDE connection has lots of pins on the rear connector.

A SATA has a neat small connector, with no visible pins.

  • When replacing a drive in the same system, such as in this video, you can use an imaging program, like Norton Ghost, Powerquest DriveImage, Vista backup, etc to create an image of the entire drive.

This includes the OS, all drivers, programs, documents, and so on.

You can then replace the drive and load the image back onto your new drive, and everything will be axactly how it was before the upgrade - with the addition of the larger Hard Drive.

  • and also will it copy the device drivers

  • hey thanx for the help but what software would i have to use to copy the os over

  • Awesome video. You were spot on, replacement took 2 minutes!

  • thank you!

  • and also how do i transfer the data on my current hdd to my new hdd?

  • Good question KoolJayJ about transferring data from your current hard drive to your new one!

By any chance, did someone answer that for you?

  • There are 3 ways to do this.

    1. Use some third party software and clone the HDD. This is the only way to also transfer the OS etc across.

    2. Use an external HDD and backup all your data, then transfer it across to the new HDD once installed.

    3. Purchase and external HDD caddy for your old HDD. Once the new one is installed, use the old HDD in its new caddy as an external HDD to retrieve all your data.

  • Hey I got a XPS m1530 it has 2gb ram and duo 2.4ghz, how do i upgrade the Ram?

  • You do not need to open the laptop up.

With the M1530 you will find a large panel under the laptop, with approx 3 screws holding it down. Simply remove this panel and you will have access to both RAM slots - easy peasy!

  • Thanks for the help! Your video really helped us fix our laptop!!!!

  • Good video, thanks. However, my Latitude X300 requires me to open the entire casing and get under the keyboard! Uuurgh.

  • im getting a x300 in about a week, do you know if they handle vista good?

  • Sorry my friend, i've no idea, XPPro.

Whatever you do, do not ever buy a 2nd hand laptop, even if it says 'refurbished'. I've been burned twice!

  • how have you been burned, like what went wrong with them?

    thanks

  • Well, funnily enough, the hard drive usually needs replacing after a short period of time. Also, you don't know how often they've been bashed around.

  • thanks alot, it doesn't seem that scary now ;)

  • Aw shucks Dell is a whole lot easier! My ASUS isn't as friendly as that. xD

  • i put a new hdd in my dell laptop, the bios reads the hdd but when i try to boot from cd it says :no boot sector on internal HDD"

  • The laptop is trying to boot from the empty HDD and not the CD.

Enter your BIOs and go to 'Boot Menu'. This will show you a small list of bootable devices. Make sure that your CD drive is ABOVE the HDD.

Then save and exit the BIOs - making sure the CD is in the drive.

The laptop will then search to see if there is a CD in the drive, and boot from that, rather then the HDD first.

  • i was wondering,, is the hard drive is the ID of the computer? I need the new ID for my computer.,, this one website dont allow my computer to play their games.. i can change the IP....

  • Clear your cookies and delete your browsing history.

Remember, resetting your internal IP wont work - most websites log and restrict your public IP - hence you need to try restarting your router/modem, or contact your ISP and request your IP be refreshed. You cannot reset your public IP by any other means.

  • Nice post thanks. Mine is a : DELL INSPIRON 1520 Vista 32 bitt Home Premium, 4GB RAM DDR2 667MHZ (5300), 160GB SATA 5400RPM, 4ML2 CACHE, 8600MGT 256MB CARD, T7100 C2DUO 1.8MHZ PROCESSOR, BLUETOOTH, WEBCAM, 15" 1440X900 PIXELS. DVDRW, £600. What do you think? PS: How do you find out how much Cache is in your 1520 home premium?

  • PS: What is the "strike zone" on the back of the laptop for? Thanks...

  • my had drive diskette is going out is that the same thing in this video

  • Depends. Which laptop do you have? If its a SATA drive, then the process will be the same ;o)

  • I have a Latitude D610 and want to upgrade the hdd. Are all hdds compatable with my laptop or only certain types? I want to make sure I'm buying some that will work!

  • someTHING that will work, I mean!

  • You will probably need a SATA drive - so any SATA 2.5" drive will work fine.

  • Thanks. Really helpful video, so thanks for that also!

  • will my dell D610 HHD fit the Dell d620?

I wonder that 'cause I want to sell off my dell D610 and upgrade to a dell D620, but I dont' want to sell it with my current hard drive for security purposes.

Help me please and tell if my current Dell d610 hard drive will fit into the dell

    D620.???

  • I believe the D610 has an IDE hard drive, whereas the D620 has a SATA hard drive - hence, unfortunately, you will be unable to use the same Hard drive in the D620.

  • thanks a lot, your cool, mate!!!!

  • Hi my dell came with a genuine copy of windows vista. Once I put the new hard drive in, can I just install windows vista? Microsoft doesn't care that I changed the hard drive?

  • Correct. Since the remaining hardware has not changed you can just install Vista on the new drive with no issues, as the license is on the sticker under the notebook.

You will not be able to use the drive you removed in another system without formatting and installing a seperate OS on it first though.

  • Nice vid, solid advice. Thanks for putting it together!

  • Many thanks

  • thanks!

  • ok once you do that how do you install the OS and drivers from scratch. i need a step by step guide if you know where i can find one

  • thankyou very much, crystal clear

  • hi how do you ground yourself before touching the components? is it necessary to buy a ground bracelet?

  • Touch something thats bare metal. Radiator, metal pipework, etc.

  • you said batry

  • Very informative stuff, thanks a lot man.

  • Thanks for the instructive video. I suggest correcting on important ommision. On the old drive, use a small jewelers screwdriver to carefully remove the adapter connector. Move the adapter connector to your new disk drive, being careful not to bend the pins on the disk drive (press slighty on one side, then the other, going back and forth).

    Happy trails, Michael

  • i have no idea if i have SATA or w/e i know i have 120 gb 5400rpm thats all

  • hi i have a dell inspiron 1520 do you know of a cheap 250GB compatible hard drive i can buy to replace my old one?

  • If your laptop takes a SATA hard drive, I am currently selling a 200GB 7200rpm HDD - which is the largest you can get with a spindle speed of 7200rpm. If you are in the UK and are interested, contact me and we can come to some arrangement ;o)
