  • So San Diego's own Paul Bloom used to anchor was then known as Channel 11 News in the 1970s, right?

  • this is some stone age shizznet

  • One nice thing about Dish Network...I no longer live in NYC, but I do have both WPIX and WWOR once again thanks to the Superstations package. I'm watching the Honeymooners on 11 now. Great way to bring back a childhood.

  • Does anybody know the title of the early morning music played in this clip. Thanks.

  • @chriskvideochallenge It's Holst: The Planets - Mercury, The Winged Messenger. I have this on my iPod and this track always reminds me of when I heard this on TV as a kid.

  • WPIX came all the way to Buffalo Ny in the 80's it's how I discovered The Honeymooners when I was 9

  • Cool video, gives me an idea what the station was like back then.

  • wow, that logo causes me to zone out!

  • WPIX, before CW.

  • And before the "Dubb-ya Bee"

  • This music kinda reminds me of what you hear when walking through the Port Authority building in NYC.

  • while you also happen to be in a tim burton movie.

  • @johnissoevil - I've noticed that too...these were such great days, boy do I miss them!

  • JOE BOLTON AND JACK MCCARTHY RULE!

  • It's cool to see how WPIX has decided to go back to a slightly modified circle 11 logo. I guess the powers that be felt like the station was losing its identity.

  • you saw it too right?! im glad they change it too. CW11 logo sucked. so you think other stations and companies will copy and go back to thier old logos too? that would be awsome

  • Tough to say, at least in New York anyway. WWOR did it already for a while back in the mid 90's when they became UPN and it's not like any of the other stations with the exception of WCBS and WABC had logos that made a long term impression on viewers. There are other ways to reconnect though like when WNBC went back to their 4 New York campaign. It's time to reconnect with the community this is the best way to do it.

  • It seems like they were having some technical difficulties there.

  • this music always stayed in my head for all these years, as a kid staying up late watching WPIX. Thanks a bunch for posting this! :)

  • Glad you like it :)

  • Here is a good old history lesson. The WPIX TV Station was located in the World Trade Center In New York City.

WPIX Went off the air waves here when the wtc fell on 9/11/2001

The large aetna on the roof of the wtc could reach distance`s all the way to South Jersey

  • Did you mean WPIXs antenna? I read something about this, a document from a week after 9/11: WPIX operated on low-power from the Daily News Bldg 220 E. 42nd St, then from the Empire State Bldg along with Chs 2, 5, 9 and 13. Chs 4 and 7 from Alpine, NJ. And Ch. 31 had to use 2 LPTV xmttrs (NJ and Long Island) on other frequencies, with their main xmttr gone and no back-up, I presume.

  • @MSTS1 Well Michael, or as I can call you Mike, Is WPIX a tribune station?

  • @johnwest19995 - They were in 1987, but since I don't get that station anymore, I don't know what goes on with them now, or who they are owned by..

  • Yeah, and friends of mine down in Philly would pull in WWOR a few times. They had the labotomized EMI feed on cable, the antenna brought in the better feed.

  • WPIX was not located in the World Trade Center, however the station had it's signal feed off the antenna of the World Trade Center. When the 2nd plane hit the WTC, WPIX lost it's feed. After a few hours, they were able to feed off of the Empire State building, which they do to this day.

  • Actually, the NYC stations set up temporary facilities in Alpine, NJ just days after the attacks. The stations moved back to Empire about 2 months later.

  • @MikesMegan916 I think that 2 WPIX workers got killed up there on 9/11 Mike while doing maintenance checkups.

  • he sounds like the guy who used to do the voiceovers for Kraft recipies in the 1980s on the CTV Television Network

  • Ok Roy now everything is finally cleared up.Its been so many years and still going.Godd to hear you are still with WPIX at times. Coming up in our era we identified with voices because we did not have the techno that we have now(cable ect!)My brother would always recognize voicesat different times and places on TV and Radio. You and other reporters played major roles in peoples live growing up!!

  • I don't consider myself ancient, but did spend a large part of my life at WPIX--starting in 1968. Glad I contributed some pleaant memories!

    Roy Whitfield

  • Oh YEAH!!I also remmeber Roy Whitfield doing the news for WWRL-1600 for a period of time.Does anyone recall?

  • I think this was the late 1960's, before he moved on to WPIX. I have to admit this was before my memories began coalescing, but I did read about him being at 'RL in the past.

  • Actually, I worked for WWRL full-time from 1964-1970, then worked part-time through 1980 while at WPIX. I still work at WPIX a few times a year, filling in for Jim Cutler, who is the voice of the station.

    Roy Whitfield

  • Many thanks for the background info. 'Tis most appreciated.

  • Does anyone remmeber the Editorials? Whats your opinion,we"d like to know? What was this guys name?

  • Richard N. Hughes, Vice-President & General Manager for much of that time. As synonymous with WPIX as Peter Kohler and Sue Cott were with WCBS-TV, Joe Michaels and Bud Carey were with WNBC-TV, the likes of Robert Fennimore and Marsha Kaminsky were with WOR-TV, such WABC-TV execs as Ken MacQueen, Phil Boyer and Bill Fyffe . . .

  • Hughes was the best of that group in presentation, IMO, while Michaels always seemed as if he was constipated.

  • Interesting observation. What about the other stations' editorialists whose names I mentioned?

  • Again, based solely on presentation, I thought Bill Fyffe was personable and engaging. I felt Marsha Kaminsky was on the cold side, but she was kind of cute, so I let her slide on that. :-)

As for the others, I don't have a strong reaction either way at the present time. I would need to see an old video clip to give you my impressions of them. It's so many years ago.

  • Thanx so muchwmbrown6.I really miss Paul and Roy!! Great Memories!!

  • In response to the comment below!! Roy Whitfield!! This is Roy Whitfield,Good Morning!! Thanx so much!! Roy left a few years earlier!!

  • I forgot the Public Anouncers name! I think it was Paul Bloom?

  • I.I.N.M., Paul Bloom left WPIX around the time of the revamping of "Action News" in 1977 to the form we all know. Last heard from, Mr. Bloom was working at KUSI in San Diego - the proverbial "elephants' graveyard" where TV news talent on their last legs go. (B.T.W., this was also where Steve Bosh worked, likewise last heard from.)

  • I remember when I was 6 years old that logo with the orchestra tune would wake me up every morning

  • Holst's "The Planets", right?

  • i didn't even know it had a name, did they use that same song in 1989 and 90 or was it just my cheap tv that made it sound different. I remember around 1991 they changed the licensing routine and took the song out. After that I forgot what it sounded like, then I came across this and it sounds very familiar

  • Ahhhh I loved seeing that symbol again.

  • The announcer who handled that slides-only weather report was Roy Whitfield, from what I recall.

  • You are correct!

    Roy Whitfield
