You know, the older I get the more wisdom this piece has to offer. I had a friend who use to work with Hanson up at Eastman and he talked about him as if he were a god. He get's over shadowed by a lot of European composer contemporary with him, but geez his contribution to contemporary music now and then is pretty amazing. Thanks for the post.
Thanks for posting, qedgeexcalibur. I'd seen the William Tell video a couple years back, but this was a new discovery today. Need to dig out my old CHS videos, 1986-1988...
i didnt even know high school orchestras this good even existed! i mean yeah there are some pretty youth orchestras out there like the cleveland orchestra youth orchestra and the san francisco youth orchestra but a school orchestra? wow. though i guess this was almost 20 years ago now. love howard hanson, thanks for posting this video!
@tchaik4th Search the orchestra "Carmel High School Orchestra" and you can see more recent videos of them under their new director Soo Han. They are still incredible.
This sounds pretty darn good. This is from 93. I wonder what happened to alot of the musicians playing? If they went on to become professionals? Just curious. I have played this music before. It's a neat sounding piece.
@LLJtbone My brother was the principal cellist in this group. He became Janos Starker's Associate Instructor at Indiana University and is now a professor of cello and conducting. A horn player in the orchestra is Director of Orchestras at Purdue University, and another is a violin professor in Oklahoma. Search the orchestra "Carmel High School Orchestra" and you can see more recent videos of them under their new director Soo Han. Tom Dick retired after having taught there for almost 20 yrs.
God, I can't believe this is a high school orchestra. When I was in high school in Indiana, years ago, we sounded nothing like this. Great choice of music. My hat is off to those guys and gals.
It's amazing to see "people" openly critizing the composer and the orchestras work on "Romantic", like you could do any better. Or better we DO NOT WANT TO HEAR YOUR PROFOUND OPINION, don't like this upload by qedgeexcalibur then keep your mouth shut, thanks.
I'd love to here it if you can post the link after the "/"
Although I maintain that this is a public high school not a regional youth orchestra, I played this with a regional youth orchestra and it was better but at a PUBLIC high school this is hard to find.
i agree with what you're saying, but really in this context, i don't think it's their fault. the conductor is really taking this way too fast for such a hard piece. i mean, even the trumpets who have a pretty important part at 3:32 have trouble getting all of their notes out, and when they do, they're extremely out of tune.
this is a great piece, but i think it's taken a little too fast to really enjoy it.
and i personally like the band arrangement a little better.
I believe the reason it was taken so fast; we had a 30 minute time slot for 3 songs. Anything over that time period, the group would be penalized points, including getting off the stage in time.
This is a wonderful piece of music. It is interesting to hear a different interpretation of this movement. This symphony plays it much quicker than the symphony I am in.
I think this is Hanson Symphony no 2, 3rd movement. As a current CHS orchestra member, I can't express how happy I am to be able to listen to the old orchestra under Mr. Dick's baton. It has high historical value to me. Many thanks to the poster for posting these videos!
Haha, CHS orch is amazing!!! At first when I heard this I was like...wow, this orch is good...it is better than CHS!!! Then, I read the description, rofl. Happy ^^

I've played this piece before when I was in high school. Definitely something to do with plenty of time to spare, not during a contest.
But ambition kudos to y'all.

Please keep profanity off the comments. If you're a critic, fine, but no need for vulgar words.

he graduated from butler university

Cool. I like his conducting. He looks like a number of teachers at my University, and they all studied at University of Iowa. just curious.
