Frank was wrong about one thing. The MPAA and the movie industry is very much a part of hte "candy coated dictatorship" Which he so eloquently described. Look at ACTA and SOPA.
I LOVE Frank. I don't like his music, but I respect the hell out of him. BUT...Frank, who always did a good job of cutting through the BS, bought into the Rep/Dem thing. To be direct, Dems are just as big as scum bags as Reps. I don't know how he ever believed Dems were "good
@headlesssoldier I am sure Frank would have caught onto what is really going on with the continuity of agenda throughout the "two" party system if he was around today. The sad thing is a lot of us all have caught onto it late; and, maybe more so, there are way too many people still totally blind to it (especially considering how blatant it is). All I can say is we have got to keep educating those lesser in tune. Mankind is soon in for dark days if people don't get it.

It's too bad Frank wasn't around to see the Democrats and the state run Media that we have today. He would have freaked when they told him what he could and couldn't say in his music. Along with what he could eat or smoke or drive. Hilarious!
Interesting how the rise of the internet happened just as FZ passed away. What would he think of today's technology-dependent culture? What issues that he wrestles with here would he see resolved, and which exacerbated?
Democracy is one big fat lie. It's such utter and complete bullshit that not one its supporters actually believes in it. It's just a word people use because they think it somehow means something good, but it's undefined and undefinable. What it means in real life is that you will be ruled by people with guns. That's ALL it means. It means you are a slave and you will submit, but you will like it and think it's your choice because, after all, it's "democracy." What else is there?
And you can't have a real democracy if the voting population's choice is narrowed down to corporatocracy/banker/warmonger hand-picked candydates fit to be become puppet Presidents. Ron Paul would make a great free-thinking President, but I'm afraid it won't happen.
Frank.I love you,you will be remembered, you said it didn't matter how or if people remembered you...but you knew everyone would! i think you meant that, you won't be here so in that respect it doesn't matter, your right! But you knew the world would continue without you and all your efforts and things you loved to do for money, fun whatever your art, your talent your attitude, your intelligence is loved by so many and will be remembered and honored and appreciated etc. for all time.Thank you!
I swear, sometimes I think Frank was a prophet. He was so ridiculously ahead of his time musically, politically, and the way he viewed life in general.
YT comments indicate that people think there was once a time when musicians like Zappa were played on radio. Ha! Maybe in LA or NYC, but not most places. Finally (late) they would play one Zappa song --Yellow Snow. There was no Dylan except Blowing/Wind, and no J Airplane except (bet you can guess)White Rabbit. It was a culture war and they were not about to play the music of the side they hated. They always choose wrong tee hee.
@dancolyton well then you are an idiot, he clearly said it was for the republican party. You cant just jump to the conclusion that the card he says represented the republican party was actually, for certain, the illuminati instead. what makes you think this? and to be honest, if I ran a secret society, i would be pretty pissed off if I found out that someone was just sending membership cards out to famous people. kinda gives away the secret, right?
I have always been a very big Zappa fan dating back to the 70's but do not agree that one political party does business any differently than the other. I too believed what he did back then. My opinion has evolved to not trust either major political party. They are both corrupt, they just pander to different special interest groups that get favors back, in the form of taxpayer funded goodies. He is above most all of us and if you think he and you are the kindred spirits which vote, learn, and protest together- you oughta think again
I agree with Zappa's views on politics. Much as you might not like Obama, I don't think you're right about him talking about Obama. Mainly he detested the efforts to control the airwaves and specifically the religious right, which has grabbed hold of the Republican party. Essentially, he was a libertarian -- and not one of the fake libertarians who still persist in crusading for religious-right "moral" issues by turning a blind eye to the culture wars in which the government regulates privacy.
Zappa does a pretty good interview, but I can't help but think the interviewer really didn't draw him out enough... of course, being a writer and huge fan I'm here saying "ask him about the censorship of his third LP"... etc. :o)
I like Frank's approach to politics. He was open minded and seemed to be able to see more than one point of view, and he wasn't bragging or trying to impress with his thoughts either. And he wasn't a hater-fundementalist type either, he viewed things independantly where most people would filter everything through their ideology.
Modern day politics is like religion, and I hate that.
@hpw59 "Constitutional Republic" is a recent replacement for the phrase "democratic republic," a republic where our leaders are nominally chosen by citizens and who govern with their consent, although historically these elections have been manipulated in various ways. The Democrats have no agend...a, and when they speak on any topic, they want to sound as Republican as possible... - FZ

@fiddlercrab3 Qualified People? Are you serious? Obama is a monstrosity of a President and an even WORSE HUMAN BEING. Read jumpbackon's comment above for more. ZAPPA RULES AND LONG LIVE THE REPUBLIC.
@fiddlercrab3 Because he is being disingenuous and deceitful to us and because of who he is placing around him, Are you really trying to convince me that Obama is a good human being? He is a combination of a fascist and a socialist, I know opposite ends of the spectrum right? But if you look at his actions and see that he has nationalized the banks, health care and motor ind. and appointed total socialists AND he bailed out his wall street buddies and is a puppet of the corporations A FASCIST.
in his time they really were a threat. nowadays, the establishment has taken control of mass marketing and uplifted un-artistic ppl as artists. but those of us in the know realize that those people arent truely artistic at all; but are just puppets. the true artists are in the underground these days. :)
Finally! Someone who publically said wha I have always contested about Democracy. You can't have a true democracy with a bunch of "ignorant" people. Unfortunately the US has become so "ignorant" and doesn't even know what a democracy is! Edward Bernays sure did a great job on "America" and now it is becoming a global phenomena. Poor us.
but the governments create ignorance by not telling us what we need to know...
i believe that even a minimun educated person can make a right choise, IF the news and election candidates just give the real and relevant information about their politics...
But the news and the government are controlled by corporations. In addition people's choices of life styles also influence their ignorance. You have freedom of choice that is "guided" by MASS media, a brainwashing technique that leads you to beleieve that your are making your own choice while in reality those choices are influenced by the media.
Frank Zappa was absolutely right, people who deliberately call him paranoid are the people who don't want to see the world for what it really is.
Frank lived his own live without censoring himself and without compramise, in other words a good life and the life we should all have. Take a look at Britain's laws then look at this video again and tell me that has wrong; do that and I'll be impressed there's anyone that brainwashed.
no statue necessary. buy some books written by zappa and give them to your local library. they still can't refuse to shelve them.. do the same with his cd's. really. how would zappa like to be remembered? "doesn't matter." - fz in his own words. educate! for free
Democracy states that any one person has the right of free speech. The moment that a person speaks out against the government directly in America, germany, the slime-pit england that I live in or wherever, they are imeadiatly either arrested, or interrogated for 'suspected anti-governmental activities'.
Therefore, democracy does not exist in these places, and I find it hard to beleive it does anywhere.
People need to be more accepting of individual freedom like frank was.
pfff..... The founding fathers of the "constitutional republic" were un-elected slave and property owners who condoned the killing of the Native Americans and stealing land from the Mexicans. Every type of nation and sovereignty was built on autocratic bullshit!
@bukhavul The threat that artists present to totalitarian governments is the threat of exposure. Governments use a media filtering system to limit the amount of access that the general masses have to artist's work, things like criticism, rating sytems and censorship are the only weapon the government needs. If the artists were eliminated completely then the masses would be alerted to the true nature of the totalitarian government
And somehow that's contrary to the facts? Tell me this then - why is it that the most celebrated artists always get killed in some inconceivable way...
@bukhavul Al quaida is a group too you know. And they exist does they not?
Maybe they are not highly skilled musicians, but who cares. They had supporters enough to get attention in media right? Someone drives plains in skyscrapers others plays guitars in a rock group. There are more links between all the things in media then you have thought about. There is always a system containing politics and religion who tells you what you should fear.
Paranoia can be defined in some cases as knowledge observed by the uninformed. Everything Frank said has transpired, if anything, his perceptions fall a little short of the extent.
@Pighood Paranoid Whack Job? He was far from that. Either you are not paying attention to what is happening around you or you have drank the Kool Aid.
Frank Zappa missed the point. Democracy is not the problem it is the ignorance of Liberty. Blaming democracy is like blaming gravity for airplane crashes. In any form of democracy the populist dogma becomes the norm and if that dogma is: Sharia law, some party's agenda, or a cult figure, then - the rest is history. For those who are US citizens and would like to preserve their Liberty you must demand the study of Americanism in K through 12!
I don't think he was necessarily blaming democracy itself. I think he was saying that democracy is essentially useless BECAUSE of the massive amount of ignorance.
Love Frank but what party is acting like the communists now?

He is a combination of a fascist and a socialist, I know opposite ends of the spectrum right? But if you look at his actions and see that he has nationalized the banks, health care and motor ind. and appointed total socialists AND he bailed out his wall street buddies and is a puppet of the corporations A FASCIST.

Artistic people a threat to the establishment?Don't you mean puppets of the establishment Frank?
shine350 2 years ago
in his time they really were a threat. nowadays, the establishment has taken control of mass marketing and uplifted un-artistic ppl as artists. but those of us in the know realize that those people arent truely artistic at all; but are just puppets. the true artists are in the underground these days. :)

Poor us.
vanderbiltst 2 years ago
but the governments create ignorance by not telling us what we need to know...
i believe that even a minimun educated person can make a right choise, IF the news and election candidates just give the real and relevant information about their politics...
aakkoin 2 years ago

"doesn't matter." - fz in his own words. educate! for free

Zappa needs a statue or something. The man should be a national hero. Americans, get your act together!
Kitsua 2 years ago 7
He does have a statue, somewhere in Lithuania. He has a street named after him in Berlin too i think.

fuck democracy... REPUBLIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So you're a communist? Pro-dictatorship?
Gazhole 2 years ago
Democracy states that any one person has the right of free speech. The moment that a person speaks out against the government directly in America, germany, the slime-pit england that I live in or wherever, they are imeadiatly either arrested, or interrogated for 'suspected anti-governmental activities'.
Therefore, democracy does not exist in these places, and I find it hard to beleive it does anywhere.
People need to be more accepting of individual freedom like frank was.
PneRobinho619 2 years ago 2
If you want true freedom you need something like a Constitutional Republic which is what we are supposed to have in America
theoriginals 2 years ago
pfff..... The founding fathers of the "constitutional republic" were un-elected slave and property owners who condoned the killing of the Native Americans and stealing land from the Mexicans. Every type of nation and sovereignty was built on autocratic bullshit!

@TheNilesLeshProject bullshit. if artists were danger for governments then they wouldnt exist.
bukhavul 1 year ago
@bukhavul The threat that artists present to totalitarian governments is the threat of exposure. Governments use a media filtering system to limit the amount of access that the general masses have to artist's work, things like criticism, rating sytems and censorship are the only weapon the government needs. If the artists were eliminated completely then the masses would be alerted to the true nature of the totalitarian government

Gook Luck.
Mike10four 2 years ago
I don't think he was necessarily blaming democracy itself. I think he was saying that democracy is essentially useless BECAUSE of the massive amount of ignorance.
SuzyandtheZodiac 2 years ago 3
He doesn't blame democracy he states that the United States was moving away from a democracy towards a candy coated dictatorship.
