She's a doctor of psychology, which is the study of the mind a study that is grounded in science. Therefore, some psychologists can not think beyond an imperial level. There is much more to life than the physical existence. Try as hard as we may, I don't think we are supposed to find the answers just yet. I think that we are allowed a glimpse every now and then to remind us, that there us much more to our existence than this physical world.
my gran had a heart attack about 10 years back. i asked her not to long ago what it was like for her to die (she had been dead for 3 minutes). she told me that, she felt better than she had ever felt, she said she felt she was at peace with everything. she said it wasent a tunnel or a bridge she saw. she said it was more an orb like thing that slowly drowned her in light. and when the doctors had almost revived her, she told me she didn't really fancy going back to life because she felt so good.
Susan has come to the same conclusion atheists have. Throw out the baby with the bathwater. While many things can be explained, many can't. Skeptics say eventually there will be no mystery, believers are not so sure. It's the mystery that makes it special.
life energy is very different than all other types of energies, it's related to the energy that created the universe and controls and gives it's rules, we all going to the same place maybe today, maybe in 100 years, but there is no place to hide, we have to face it. sooner or later. let's try to live a good life, what do we really want for the really short period of time on this world is what really matters. peace and health is all I have, for now. and just a little of $.
you have to weed through the christians and athiests taking the bible literally. Look at it from a standpoint away from christian beliefs. Why not another dimension, a loving light?
shame that she have done so much experience!!! .. that she still doesn't get it.... if you had NDE .... you would know what the truth is ... to her research.

@darthvatrayen, I don't think people have a problem accepting a higher being, they just have a problem with the other people who also accept it and push there world view and thought of that higher being on them.
LOL The female skeptic..... "I believe it's not because we go to heaven but because we have similar brains"
What a surprise a skeptic using "theories" and trying to pass them off as fact. She has no more evidence that it is the result of the brain hallucinating... than the NDE people do that they have been to heaven..... but somehow she comes to that conclusion that hallucinations are the reason.
That's called having pre-conceived bias also called scientific brainwashing in universities
It's called using what we DO know. We DO know that the brain releases certain chemicals upon it's death, or during the time when one would be in shock. Most Neurologists think it's the body's defense mechanism to shut out the pain. Chemicals like melatonin, serotonin, adrenaline, etc, are all released during our death in massive amounts. We also know what kind of effect those chemicals can have. It's not too much of a stretch to say it's natural to see such things.

OK, I know he must be stupid simply because he's Dutch. Not to mention American, French and German scientists which have an entirely different stance on the issue.
No matter how you look at it, if you are reading this - you are going to die! Scary? Yes, very much so. Yet I find some kind of comfort in the idea that since the beginning of time our ancestors have believed in something on the other side. People today are still dying, we bring them back to life, we ask them if they saw anything, they reply with stories like these, and we still don't believe them! "Oh there must be a scientific explanation!" Sure, but what if there isn't?
@crackercookies It's true that we are all going to die, but in a way, that means we are the lucky ones, because life is wonderful, sunsets, music, art, poetry, love, nature, friends, science, literature....It is important to enjoy this life and live it to the full and make the most of it. If you believe that there is another life to come, an eternal one, you might not make the most of this life.

@darthvatrayen I don't know what you mean by 'prepare for an afterlife'. mind goes elsewhere not soul? Its hallusination? Because of brains? This made me ANGRY its because of god not our brains or maybe both because god created our brains
Here's what I've been thinking. If a soul is able to leave a body, and see the world around for itself, why not simply prove that by means of an experiment. In other words, let the soul of a suitable person read some text placed somewhere where the person' eyes can't reach. If such an experiment could be duplicated any time, no cheating of course, then that would be pretty much enough to believe that, 1) soul exists independently of the body, and 2) soul could actually survive physical death.
The problem is that it cannot be easily duplicated, meaning the conditions required carry out the experiement. Apparently the ideal conditions are under cardiac arrest, when the person is closest to dying. However, there have been numerous reports when a clinically dead person has been able to tell the doctors after the fact about the conversations they had while operating on them, gesticulations and other things. Doctors did not know what to think of it because it scared them to a degree.
As much as I know that experiment that you are sugesting it was done in a hospital(I have to check it on the net wich hospital was that and the name of the doctor who was doing this experiments in a emergency room) and actualy those peoples who survived and they where taken from the emergency room to the intensive and they woke up, they where able to tell the number or a name wich was placed on the top of the operation light. Peoples who died they where able to see the room from above.
There has been this kind of a proof before. Example, there was one case where a person believed he was dead, heres what he remembers: a second nurse came in running and he remembers what the nurse and the doctors were saying (now this part is when he was declared dead) so I believe that he told who came and what discussion was going on I think that is enough to show there is life after death.
Dr Blackmore is a scientist and allows no room for the metaphysical, ergo, her opinion is just that, an opinion. Take it or leave it; personally, I leave it.
I'm personally not much of a believer, but it is a somewhat comforting thought that you may have an afterlife of sorts. We may never know (in our alive state, of course) if there is an afterlife, because the settings where they artificially "kill" the subject they don't let it go past the point of revival, maybe the body and "soul" knows it's not going to really die.
I would really like to hear what the lady doctor has to said about born blind people that see for the first time in that state.... She looks like the inquiscition negating what she obvioulsy doesnt understand.... but some day she will hehe... sooner or later...
jocheluich: how right you are. She sounds silly and even scared. Most of the people I know who don't believe in an afterlife don't WANT an afterlife. Hm, hm....I don't think anybody who hasn't read a ton of books on the subject should have an opinion. They should completely inform themselves first. Period.
Yep.. I guess is a long winding road for all of us... and after some reading, suffering, learning, and time you begin to realize that anything is posible... we are just limited by our thoughts.. and this lady is limited by her Dr. title... :)
how the hell did he survive this, im glad he survived, but once my grandma said she had a nde where she saw a light and was moving towards it because she stopped breathing and her heart stopped beating but she came back to life and im glad :)
@superpheonixfire Then explain why some people that have had a NDE can see everything around them. I just seen this one video where the lady died and she could see the doctors trying to save her then she was on top of the hospital and seen a white shoe then came back into her body. She told the nurses what happened and they went up to the roof and found a white shoe. Coincidence? I don't think so. Many of the same stories though-out history.
While I can understand the oxygen-deprived state that the person is in at the time can lead to hallucinations, I would think that it was highly unlikely that everyone would have almost the identical hallucinations. Our brains are not "alike" at all. Neurosurgeons usually do operations with patients awake so that they can be sure not to be affecting vital areas which though they are usually (not always) in the same general area, the specific areas are very individual.
Actually...I understand it's not so much the lack of oxygen but the brain's pineal gland that excretes DMT at the time of death (or when the body thinks it's dying {also, when we sleep}) which is the cause for these hallucinations. Apparently, they've done studies on people from different walks of life and religious perspectives whose near death experience is relative to their beliefs. So...who knows.
no actually she is quite wrong ( they all are to put her in this video) this is bullshit!!if the mind would react in some way so that the morphine and other intoxicants took over the mind it would harm the brain and damaging the memory ( in other words if she is right then non of the people that have had near death experiences remember it!!!
Actually ,if you listen to The other guy,he postulates that the brains of these individuals are damaged-I think he says destroyed,if THAT were the case none of the people would be able to remember or tell of it. Also, not everyone has the same experience.Recent research by believers in NDE states that around 15% have horrible experiences of hell, darkness demons etc. They think the figure may be higher, as many people are too ashamed and afraid to admit it.There was doc on discovery about it
isnt that women STUPID !! FUCK I HATE SCEPTICS how can you explain that the old guy stayed in the water and survived more than after 22 minutes? explain that EINSTEIN BITCH!! NOT even the handicaped Smartest man in a weelchair can't explain this BUT SHE can!! SHUT THE FUCK UP and suck my dick!! i'm tired of dumbasses.
I would think her explanation is hypothermia, which is reasonable, given the circumstances. Its a pity you cant make a point without using obscenities,do you find her arguments frightening as well as tiring ?
She's at the University of West of England. That tells one all one needs to know. Besides, her hypothesis cannot account for the diversity in experience and the fact that people also remember what was happening around the room itself during the experience...so I guess her notion of hallucinations is something out of the self. Recall also she says 'I believe' not 'I know'. Very different things both!
Sorry to be long winded, BUT, I actually pointed out that there was variance in experience in reply to a comment that similarity in the anecdotes validated them in some way. you cant have your cake and eat it.There is little difference in "I believe " and "I think", They are both totally subjective, and add nothing to the sum of human knowledge unless qualified by "I can prove " and "I can replicate" Both sides of this argument bandy these terms around. Lazy thinking, flabby argument , shame.
they always have to have a NORMAL explanation for things cant they just accept that mabye people do go somewhere after death, asking them to even think about it for a moment is like asking a pig to fly !
@MCRMY107 - Well, the truth is in your heart, to be honest. Sounds cheesy, doesn't it? But it's true.
The fact of the matter is, is that if we don't have people like HER then society will have claims that THEIR god is the one true god cause S/HE presented him/herself so therefore they WIN! lol we need a good balance of science to keep society in check, don't you agree?
But the secrets behind the science shall always remain. So worry not. ;)
@ahmedwalymek86 We can feel air, we can see the physical effect air has on things. As much as hardcore believers like to bring in the "we can't see air, but we know it exists" card into such a discussion, it's of no use, 'cause of my above points. I really would love to believe in life after death, and all the other supernatural things. Trust me, I do. But I am a rational and skeptic human being, I question everything, but with these things, I don't get a logical answer. I still love it though.
She might have a point, electrical stimulus applied to portions of the brain can induce identical responses. But anyway ,we all get to believe what we want to, and if it make people feel and act better, fine
I read about some research being conducted on NDEs.
A lot of people describe being able to look down on their body and what's happening from above, as though they're floating near the ceiling of the room.
The researchers have put pictures and pieces of writing on the tops of cabinets and shelves - places you couldn't see unless you were in such a position near the ceiling - and if someone has a NDE in the room, they ask them whether they've seen the pictures or words.
not really it is when you say a summary because you would think that when you say a summary "Why didn't his family help him? Why was he depressed?" Because you would figure a family would like to know where he was going and would probably go with him. At least that's how my family is.
Susan Blackmore- Rent-a-sceptic!! She's on loads of paranormal shows!!!
One point I would make to her is if NDE's are casued by 'random firings of cells' then how come everybody's experince of them are THE SAME? Surely if they were caused by random firings' the experiences would be more 'random' and diverse.
This is an interesting question. Tests have already been made in which signs withs letters or symbols where put at different locations in a patient's room. The aim: if somebody should "leave his body," he should be able to see the signs -- whereas he can't do this without leaving the body.
Unfortunately, none of these experiments have had positive results.
Yes, I would because I would have the greatest interest in prooving the afterlife to the whole world. I couldn't do a better favour to all mankind than prooving an afterlife.
And statistically, at least ONE of the people having had a near death experience should have been thinking like me -- but none of them did it. Very said.
Actually there are people who have near-death experiences all the time who have seen or heard things they otherwise could not have. Go to a search engine and type in Nderf, that is the Near-Death Experience Research Foundation.
And anyways even if there were positive results, the people that believe will keep on believing, while the people who disbelieve will still go on disbelieving. It happens all the time no matter what happens.
Frog: Have you heard of Dannion Brinkley? He took a severe electric shock while talking on the telephone during a thunderstorm. He had prolonged and repeated NDEs during his recovery. He now works with hospice care.
No, but I haerd of one guy who got electrocuted. The entry and exit wound was such that the electricity should have passed right through his heart, yet he lived. He experienced his soul leaving his body, among other things.
I agree...every time one of these programmes is on, they bring out Susan Blackmore, who's so skeptical about everything that she still wouldn't believe in buses even if she was knocked down by one as she crossed the road.
@brandybuck1984 not only that, but she made her explanation based on some strong ass weed "trip". That doesn't say much, you know?. She says "could be, might be". You just heard a piece of what she said. I've seen alot of interviews with her.

No. Eyeless sight is the ability to read by means of one's fingers.
I meant an experiment which may be duplicated any time when a one's soul reads a text nor reachable to the one's eyes.
If there are some very credible sources on the subject, please let me know.
I'd appreciate it.

Take it or leave it; personally, I leave it.
skylur44 2 years ago 2
I'm personally not much of a believer, but it is a somewhat comforting thought that you may have an afterlife of sorts. We may never know (in our alive state, of course) if there is an afterlife, because the settings where they artificially "kill" the subject they don't let it go past the point of revival, maybe the body and "soul" knows it's not going to really die.
It's just a thought of mine and not a theory..

I would really like to hear what the lady doctor has to said about born blind people that see for the first time in that state.... She looks like the inquiscition negating what she obvioulsy doesnt understand.... but some day she will hehe... sooner or later...
jocheluich 2 years ago 2
jocheluich: how right you are. She sounds silly and even scared. Most of the people I know who don't believe in an afterlife don't WANT an afterlife. Hm, hm....I don't think anybody who hasn't read a ton of books on the subject should have an opinion. They should completely inform themselves first. Period.

Yep.. I guess is a long winding road for all of us... and after some reading, suffering, learning, and time you begin to realize that anything is posible... we are just limited by our thoughts.. and this lady is limited by her Dr. title... :)
jocheluich 2 years ago
how the hell did he survive this, im glad he survived, but once my grandma said she had a nde where she saw a light and was moving towards it because she stopped breathing and her heart stopped beating but she came back to life and im glad :)

I agree w/ the doctor at like 2:20 or something.

you have a lot to learn my friend.... just give it some time and open your mind..
jocheluich 2 years ago

Neurosurgeons usually do operations with patients awake so that they can be sure not to be affecting vital areas which though they are usually (not always) in the same general area, the specific areas are very individual.
mmedefarge 2 years ago
Actually...I understand it's not so much the lack of oxygen but the brain's pineal gland that excretes DMT at the time of death (or when the body thinks it's dying {also, when we sleep}) which is the cause for these hallucinations. Apparently, they've done studies on people from different walks of life and religious perspectives whose near death experience is relative to their beliefs. So...who knows.

Susan Blackmore has made a career out of denial. Some of her explanations are weirder than what she's trying to debunk.

Point- Electricity exists, we use it everyday BUT scientists still cannot explain it or what it is. So why can't an afterlife exist??
You can't see the wind but it's still there. So I guess the wind doesn't exist either.
BooteyMasta 2 years ago
no actually she is quite wrong ( they all are to put her in this video) this is bullshit!!if the mind would react in some way so that the morphine and other intoxicants took over the mind it would harm the brain and damaging the memory ( in other words if she is right then non of the people that have had near death experiences remember it!!!
Gromnix 2 years ago

Lanfeust22 2 years ago
I would think her explanation is hypothermia, which is reasonable, given the circumstances. Its a pity you cant make a point without using obscenities,do you find her arguments frightening as well as tiring ?
gaiushelen9 2 years ago
She's at the University of West of England. That tells one all one needs to know. Besides, her hypothesis cannot account for the diversity in experience and the fact that people also remember what was happening around the room itself during the experience...so I guess her notion of hallucinations is something out of the self. Recall also she says 'I believe' not 'I know'. Very different things both!
goebels99 2 years ago
Sorry to be long winded, BUT, I actually pointed out that there was variance in experience in reply to a comment that similarity in the anecdotes validated them in some way. you cant have your cake and eat it.There is little difference in "I believe " and "I think", They are both totally subjective, and add nothing to the sum of human knowledge unless qualified by "I can prove " and "I can replicate" Both sides of this argument bandy these terms around. Lazy thinking, flabby argument , shame.
gaiushelen9 2 years ago
i HATE people like her !
they always have to have a NORMAL explanation for things cant they just accept that mabye people do go somewhere after death, asking them to even think about it for a moment is like asking a pig to fly !
MCRMY107 2 years ago 24
@MCRMY107 - Well, the truth is in your heart, to be honest. Sounds cheesy, doesn't it? But it's true.
The fact of the matter is, is that if we don't have people like HER then society will have claims that THEIR god is the one true god cause S/HE presented him/herself so therefore they WIN! lol we need a good balance of science to keep society in check, don't you agree?
But the secrets behind the science shall always remain. So worry not. ;)

@MCRMY107 i agree with you
i want this susan to explain to me why cant we see the air lol
ahmedwalymek86 1 year ago
@ahmedwalymek86 We can feel air, we can see the physical effect air has on things. As much as hardcore believers like to bring in the "we can't see air, but we know it exists" card into such a discussion, it's of no use, 'cause of my above points. I really would love to believe in life after death, and all the other supernatural things. Trust me, I do. But I am a rational and skeptic human being, I question everything, but with these things, I don't get a logical answer. I still love it though.

-But, she misses the point of the experience. He chose to live!
If he went across the bridge, I doubt that the body would have sustained him, until help arrived.

She might have a point, electrical stimulus applied to portions of the brain can induce identical responses. But anyway ,we all get to believe what we want to, and if it make people feel and act better, fine

She failed as a parapsychologist and now went to the other extreme and became a dogmatic believer in materialism.
Oddly enough, this woman had an out-of-body experience herself when she was young and now criticizes near-death experiences.

I read about some research being conducted on NDEs.
A lot of people describe being able to look down on their body and what's happening from above, as though they're floating near the ceiling of the room.
The researchers have put pictures and pieces of writing on the tops of cabinets and shelves - places you couldn't see unless you were in such a position near the ceiling - and if someone has a NDE in the room, they ask them whether they've seen the pictures or words.

coincidence that a depressed guy out at night by a cliff had a heart attack and just happened to fall off the cliff.
cnevill2 3 years ago 5
not really it is when you say a summary because you would think that when you say a summary "Why didn't his family help him? Why was he depressed?" Because you would figure a family would like to know where he was going and would probably go with him. At least that's how my family is.

My mother had a near death experience when my sister was born. Her story remains consistent 37 years later.
She has no fear of death and, because we grew up hearing about it, my sister and I have no fear either.

Susan Blackmore- Rent-a-sceptic!! She's on loads of paranormal shows!!!
One point I would make to her is if NDE's are casued by 'random firings of cells' then how come everybody's experince of them are THE SAME? Surely if they were caused by random firings' the experiences would be more 'random' and diverse.
brandybuck1984 3 years ago 14
That is a great point you just made!
SilkenWinds 3 years ago 4
Exactly. And how do they know things that are happening elsewhere in the hospital etc?
Steeleperfect 3 years ago 3
This is an interesting question. Tests have already been made in which signs withs letters or symbols where put at different locations in a patient's room. The aim: if somebody should "leave his body," he should be able to see the signs -- whereas he can't do this without leaving the body.
Unfortunately, none of these experiments have had positive results.
SamHawkens 2 years ago
Do you think if you died and saw the afterlife and relatives you would be looking out for signs with symbols hidden on top of the cupboard?
Macguyverman 2 years ago
Yes, I would because I would have the greatest interest in prooving the afterlife to the whole world. I couldn't do a better favour to all mankind than prooving an afterlife.
And statistically, at least ONE of the people having had a near death experience should have been thinking like me -- but none of them did it. Very said.
SamHawkens 2 years ago
Actually there are people who have near-death experiences all the time who have seen or heard things they otherwise could not have. Go to a search engine and type in Nderf, that is the Near-Death Experience Research Foundation.
And anyways even if there were positive results, the people that believe will keep on believing, while the people who disbelieve will still go on disbelieving. It happens all the time no matter what happens.

Frog: Have you heard of Dannion Brinkley? He took a severe electric shock while talking on the telephone during a thunderstorm. He had prolonged and repeated NDEs during his recovery. He now works with hospice care.
k0smon 2 years ago
No, but I haerd of one guy who got electrocuted. The entry and exit wound was such that the electricity should have passed right through his heart, yet he lived. He experienced his soul leaving his body, among other things.
Nderf is a really great site for these stories.
Frogstomp121 2 years ago
I agree...every time one of these programmes is on, they bring out Susan Blackmore, who's so skeptical about everything that she still wouldn't believe in buses even if she was knocked down by one as she crossed the road.
DavidRayner1947 3 years ago 2
@brandybuck1984 not only that, but she made her explanation based on some strong ass weed "trip". That doesn't say much, you know?. She says "could be, might be". You just heard a piece of what she said. I've seen alot of interviews with her.
