In linux it can be fixed and you can forget about it 99% of the time. Peoples' lives depend on Linux based systems more than they realize. From secure and stable servers for sites such as Google to CERN to US military applications. The NSA and white house use it for example. What does that say about linux and it's reliability?
I was working for almost a year on a Mac doing video productions and every day I was discovering new ways to get a heart attack. I have 8 years of experience doing video production on windoze with adobe software, never had a problem. Things got even better with Vista&win7

Windows for any kind of work
Linux for very specific work and office work. Safe web surfing and some entertainment (video, music)

yes you can say one os is better than another simply by looking the different asspects, for exaple in security linux is better tha windows, in stability linux is better than windows, in appearance its difficult to say because there are different opinions, in power for server applications linux is better, in managing computer resources efficiently linux is better, in compatibility windows is better, so in conclusion, linux is better than windows in most aspects

I've used all 4 different varidents... windows.. ce and nt linux pre ubuntu and after freebsd(before is even had a gui and even now) and mac which is nothing more than a freebsd rewrite... honestly.... linux and mac and nearly the SAME it's UNIX based... conversion from either or is either than windows to unix.. windows = gamers and instant messengers(sorry) mac nor linux or bsd support video conversations easily.. driver issues exist on ALL OSes... so yea.

This guys right. I have all 3 (mac, linux, windows) now. And they all work very well.
Which is better ? Well, over time probably linux. Why ? cause all the updates come from the automatic updates. Constantly updating flash and vlc. No one tends to do on windows or mac. But linux always updates to the newest versions, without any hassle.
Linux comes with office already installed on most linux's and you can play multimedia, etc..straight from the box. That's why I think linux is better.
If something doesn't work in linux you can just try a different linux and see if it works for you or join a linux forum and discuss the problem with more knowledgeable people. Same with all computer problems. ; )
Once everything works, you will probably have no problems.
Also it's easy to find software you want in the software manager, just search you want to rip dvd and click on the program to install it. Pretty easy compared to windows and mac.
For security and virus protection linux is the safest to use too. As by default it sets up an administrator password that you must use to install software, so no viruses can run and spread to other machines. Mac is good in this respect too and windows is improving, but by default doesn't run in a secure way, especially in the 95/98/XP days, so many virus outbreaks could have been stopped just by including this setup as default.
@SuperTonymr It's a completely different computer system/interface (operating system) to mac and windows but very similar.
It is 'free' ! You can try it without installing it too, you can actually burn it onto cd/dvd and run it from there and install if you wish if you like it. I wouldn't recommended it though if your not having problems with your current operating system, windows or mac. You could try it out though it wouldn't hurt.
I tried it out because my web camera and printer..
...kept playing up in windows. I wanted to web chat with my family overseas and do alot of printing but windows kept saying no printer connected and in skype my video was white you could barely see me.
I tried linux out and have not had any issues with my printer or web cam, they just worked. And it has worked ever since. Very easy to stay up to date and secure with automatic updates and you never have to fiddle around to get new versions of software. Try googling Ubuntu.
Used to be a little bit of a windows fanboy, Installed Linux Ubuntu on a virtual machine, Ubuntu 11.04 to be precise. Unity wouldn't work within a virtual machine so I REPLACED Windows with Ubuntu and I must admit, in all my years of computing. Linux Ubuntu 11.04 x64 is the best OS I have ever used. Try it guys, you will not regret!

A little bit of each - if you want to experience everything, that is. Dual boot your pc with windows and linux, and get an ipad, that way you get to experience windows, linux and a little of apple.
I use windows mainly for itunes, and my cheap but good usb tv tuner. For the internet, and playing dvds etc I use linux.
I use the ipad for playing games, reading my ebooks on the go and what not.

is security, thats why it is used in servers alot, it is extremely secure..even if you do catch a virus, just the system part of your os is taken down and none of the applications are, so it makes them easy to remove them. it also has good support from the linux community, and it plays games almost as good as windows, the only problems with it is it is slightly difficult to get used to and people are scared of it. and it needs more software to be developed for it and needs to be made a little...

windows: medium level computer user, good for gaming, good for hd videos. the bad side is with this ease of use you get viruses easy too..and in time bad system stability and speed follows.
osx: for entry level computer users, good for making videos, alright for gaming sort of, and more secure than windows, but you can still get viruses, the downside to this is apple is snooty about their computers...
Windows is like a cheap car: parts are plentiful and mechanics have known them for years.
Mac is like a foreign car: Shinier look, but when it breaks down (It will happen) there are rarely parts or mechanics close to you that know anything about them.

Windows is an amazing O/S for end users. The problem is the general public all run as administrators instead of creating seperate locked down user accounts!
Mircrosoft tried to help by introducing security privelege prompts from vista onwards, but people just click them without reading the warning, so spyware / trojans still get admin privileges.
Secure windows by LOCKING DOWN THE PRIVELEGES on your account, the admin account is NOT for casual use!
Linux (Ubuntu): Fast, productive, and good for gaming and social life. Also very pretty with Compiz!
Windows: Excellent for gaming, a tad slow, very productive, but confusing to learn at first sight. Also harbors a great amount of viruses, but you can be past that if you're smart.
Macintosh: Pretty, okay speed, iTunes is horrible for me. A little too basic for my liking, bringing me back to Windows. A bare amount of viruses.

is security, thats why it is used in servers alot, it is extremely secure..even if you do catch a virus, just the system part of your os is taken down and none of the applications are, so it makes them easy to remove them. it also has good support from the linux community, and it plays games almost as good as windows, the only problems with it is it is slightly difficult to get used to and people are scared of it. and it needs more software to be developed for it and needs to be made a little...

being the best in the entire world..which makes them only put their operating system on their computers...which is sucky because if you dont know what your doing you cant utilize the software to its true potential on a suped up overclocked computer..other than that its all good.
linux: for advanced users, good for programing games, apps, movies (avatar was made on a linux supersystem with 35,000 cores running ubuntu), its okay for gaming, okay for editing videos(kdenlive) but its stronghold...

okay okay okayy...i'm seeing all this shit..here's the real scoop on the operating systems:
windows: medium level computer user, good for gaming, good for hd videos. the bad side is with this ease of use you get viruses easy too..and in time bad system stability and speed follows.
osx: for entry level computer users, good for making videos, alright for gaming sort of, and more secure than windows, but you can still get viruses, the downside to this is apple is snooty about their computers...

Windows is like a cheap car: parts are plentiful and mechanics have known them for years.
Mac is like a foreign car: Shinier look, but when it breaks down (It will happen) there are rarely parts or mechanics close to you that know anything about them.
Linux is like a group of mad people down the street giving away free tanks and wondering why nobody's jumping at the deal... most people don't know how to drive a tank.

Just because you dumb Linux users "think" that Linux is Unix based like OS X, doesn't mean OS X is based off of Linux. Btw... Linux is CLASSIFIED as Unix-like, not fully Unix. Seriously, you idiots hear rumors and jump to conclusions...

Mac OS X uses the XNU (X is Not Unix) kernel, which is a mixture of the Mach kernel and FreeBSD (originally BSD).
It existed 2-3years before before Linus Torvalds started writing the Linux kernel.
Linux and OS X are both Unix-like, but they don't share any code.

...i switched from windows to the mac, and its been a long time now that i have the mac, and it still runs on top speed, nothing has gone wrong with it...it depends what you do with the computer that makes it bad (eg: hook it up to the internet, run an app, run too many apps, install a lot of software cluttering up ur files, using up space etc)
again, it depends on the user
windows: cheap (worth the price?) <--- think to yourself
mac: expensive (worth the price?) <-- think to yourself

the langauge of windows is so cheaply made, that is why millions and millions of viruses are out there for windows
mac has a complex language which allows no viruses (and i have heard there are viruses for mac, but u need to actually download and run it for it to take effect)...

windows: virus, slows down over time, is not a long lasting os (trust me, the windows ive had, within months, virus, slowed down greatly, and soon broke down and had to re-instal it)...

All these modern operating systems have been in development for 30 years - that's older then you, and billions of hours it has taken for the operating systems to reach a stage that there at Right now. while your reading this message there's probably 100s of people working on the latest Window 8.
Operating Systems are the HARDEST thing, ANY developer can consider- it evolves EVERY aspect of the way your computer is designed and how it run's.
OS dev is too complicated to b e perfect.

Windows is an amazing O/S for end users. The problem is the general public all run as administrators instead of creating seperate locked down user accounts!
Mircrosoft tried to help by introducing security privelege prompts from vista onwards, but people just click them without reading the warning, so spyware / trojans still get admin privileges.
Secure windows by LOCKING DOWN THE PRIVELEGES on your account, the admin account is NOT for casual use!

Linux (Ubuntu): Fast, productive, and good for gaming and social life. Also very pretty with Compiz!
Windows: Excellent for gaming, a tad slow, very productive, but confusing to learn at first sight. Also harbors a great amount of viruses, but you can be past that if you're smart.
Macintosh: Pretty, okay speed, iTunes is horrible for me. A little too basic for my liking, bringing me back to Windows. A bare amount of viruses.
