I was at this show sweet trying to find something from Dec 5th 1969 show I was at also. Altamont was the next day and I left from the Carosuel Ballroom out to Altamont.
I was at this Show The energy was there from the Audiance...But Warren Was not the Answer...Now John Kadlecik from DSO....I GIVE EM A YEAR...AND THEY WILL BE CELLING OUT MSG IN A HEART BEAT.....BRENDON BURNE ARENE....GREAT STUF IN THE FUTURE 4 THIS GREAT BAND HE WAS OUT THERE FOR TAKIN WHAT TOOK SO LONG...DAM THAT BOY IS BAD.
What I love about this song is the way it sneers at the faux long-hairs who flocked the Haight in the Summer of Love. It totally clowns on hippies, especially the poseurs and partiers. The best part: The Deadheads it makes fun of don't even know it's about them.
And it rocks - hard and goofy. The Dick's Picks Vol. 8 (Harper College) is my fave. Even without the benefit of hallucinogens, Jerry's detuning, noisy guitar will melt your brain.
Late in the Summer of Love, the Haight looked like Cancun during Spring Break. The vibe got less radical and communal as the band-wagoners, drunks, yokels, tourists and frat boys crowded in.
As the song says, "Go on home your mama's calling you."
Lot of every one showed up on Haight by summer 67 but think they were talking about all the kids from everywhere who showed up with flowers in their hair & not clue about what the real scene was & fucked it up more than any other group that showed up except for all the bad people who showed up to prey on them who weren't around before they showed up. . Bunch of mostly burnt broke homeless hungry cold kids & all the rip-off scamers that followed them in didn't look like Cancun on Spring Break.
This is so much faster than the studio version. Did they always play it like this?

Is there a live recording of this song with such fantastic slide playing as on the studio version?
larryllama 2 years ago
this is a live version buddy... listen to the end if u dont believe me
Worden26 2 years ago
Yes I know it is.
I will rephrase my question:
Does there exist a live version of this song which has slide guitar as good as the slide guitar that is used on the studio version?
Most live versions have NO slide from what I have heard. If anyone knows of a slide-tastic live version, please tell me so that I can seek it out :-)

If anybody would like I'll send you the complete 10 cd Fillmore West complete recordings from which this great song is a part of.

Cosmic Charlie was one of the best songs they ever wrote. Too bad the left it behind back in 70.

They've been playing it on the current tour. Sounds like they've been revisiting all of the old favorites.
