  • I've got a 2002 Insight and after 5 replacement battery packs have been contemplating what I would do with the car after this battery pack gives up the ghost. I think I found the solution.....right here. I can live with a diesel no problem. The mileage would probably be equal to or greater than what I'm getting now which is 48 city and 53 hwy with CVT. If the current batteries fail, selling the car would be impossible. But now, it appears as though I have an alternative.

  • Vtec just kicked in YO! no wait...

  • Very impressive. Your conversion looks as though it came from the factory that way.

  • @peterbilt2004 Thanks. We spent a lot of time researching components to use as many off-the-shelf automotive parts as we could to avoid custom fabrication thereby reducing cost while still maintaining the durability of the vehicle.

  • Wow, that is an elite swap my friend.. i bet that car has a lot more torque now.

  • @neptronix Yes. The diesel engine is a lot better fit for this application. I will say the hybrid system fills in nicely while accelerating and climbing hills. Without it operating there's a big difference in the performance of the car.

  • @TheDiddlysquat so ure saying that when i bought a new lupo 3L in 1999 it had a bad engine??? cause it sounded same. if so it must be a miracle that it did 300000km's

3cilinder tdi's just sound like that thats a fact

  • @TheDiddlysquat Well the only thing I hear making noise is the injector pulse. I guess 23 years of rebuilding gasoline engines wont tell you that one. This engine is running great, so try talking shit on another video where the people who watch it also know nothing about it.

  • @TheDiddlysquat its a 3 cilinder u idiot

  • What happened to the Honda engine that was in it?

  • @bobthebagger01 The original engine is in a wooden box. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it...yet.

  • This car has inspired me to stick a 1.2 TDI in my 1997 Toyota Tercel.

  • @SakoTGrimes Slick. Check out Fred's TDI Club for pointers on how to get the job done.

  • where are you located in Maryland? i might wanna check this out

  • @volkswagen300 I've moved locations to Portland, ME.

  • If I want to have a 1.2 TDI inside my 2000 Insight, where should I start? Did you get your IMA working with the TDI? Do you have MIMA? What do you get for MPG at 45, 55, 65, and 75 mph?

  • @frostysmores If I had it to do all over again, I'd probably do what the guys working on Project Sipster (internet search for details) did. Converting an Insight requires an exemption from the US EPA which I got for this project but it wasn't easy.

IMA does work with the TDI. I do not have MIMA although that would be a worthwhile system to use.

I haven't done extensive mileage samples at different speeds. I can tell you that I got 93.5mpg averaging 55mph over 1800 miles of highway driving.

  • Where did you get that motor?

  • I got the engine from a Lupo 3L that I had imported from Munich, Germany. Yes, it was a lengthy process but it was worth it in the name of science! The nice thing about Federal regulations is that everyone has access including car nuts with oddball ideas.

  • @024reredrum The engine came from a Lupo 3L that was imported from Germany.

  • Well done! I run one of the only 1.2 TDI Audi A2s in the UK - I have seen 103 MPG (imperial) in rush hour commute over 28 miles. Best with your project!

  • Thanks. Nice job topping 100 MPG. What amazes me about VW's 1.2L is that it will deliver tremendous fuel mileage even without resorting to hypermiling techniques.

  • @jpstaub I have actually found that with this engine the more you rev it the better it runs. I have a 1.2 polo and that thing gets 115 mpg with a custom 6 speed.

  • @adamslurch71 How's that even possible?

  • @gountzas Its called engineering, with the right amount of power, and gearing not only in the transmission but also the final drive you can achieve huge mileage numbers. But sadly most Americans ( mind you I did say most not all ) are only interested in how fast their car can go that's why you see morons in hybrids going 95mph on the freeway. dumbasses.

  • @adamslurch71 Going to a 6 speed would be pretty trick. Unfortunately, trying to swap to a 6 in the Insight would cause an wide array of problems which would require a lot of engineering/customization.

  • how the hell did you guys do it?

  • A lot of detailed study, creativity, and perseverance. This project would not have been possible without the internet. There's no way I would have found the information and people required for the job without it.

  • I think all you folks who are uneducated on the modern diesel should go to Europe for an education. Stand at a roundabout during rush hour and what do you smell/see? Even though 60-80% of the cars will be diesel the only thing you will see is the blue haze and unmistakable smell of poorly running gas engines.

  • There is this misconception that Diesel engines pollute more than gasoline engines. Even when the Diesels blew loads of black smoke (which they don't do anymore) the only thing they made more of were some NOx emissions and visual pollution all of their other emissions are lower than a regular gas burning engine. Now they burn cleaner because of the low Sulfur fuel requirements and they will run on things other than Petrollum Oil. No Honda Hybrid will do that. Except this one of course.

  • Your comment really says: I don't know nothing about engines...

The 1.2 TDI engine from VW is very high tech. And enviorment friendly.. it gives motion to one of the most enviorment friendly cars in the world... the vw lupo 3L and the audi a2 3L

    All 3 liter ( or even less ) for 100 KM. That's like 70MPG..

Honda has great gasoline engines.. but germans have the best diesel engines for sure !

  • Tell me about it, I had 2 Golfs with Diesel engines, what a couple P's.O.S. Then I stepped over to a Golf with a LPG powered engine, which was better but could not reach 200,000 km without major problems. Then a Mazda with a LPG engine, already way better, no engine problems when I traded the car in with 200,000 km.. A next Mazda had a normal engine so does my Honda now, with it Vtec engine, a marvelous piece of machinery. Honda's Clarity is the cleanest, as it is a Hydrogen powered engine!

  • As the other comments have mentioned, VW's 1.2 TDI is one of the most efficient diesel production engines and very clean. Diesels really aren't like they used to be. Not to mention that it's already more miserly than the Honda's IMA unit, and diesel uses less energy to produce than petrol does as it requires less "cracking" than petrol.

  • Yes, the unit is noisy at idle, but at a cruise diesels are as quiet, and often more quiet than petrol engines because they operate at lower revs. And with particulate filters as fitted to modern diesels, there's a large reduction in unburned hydrocarbons.

In all likelihood, Honda hasn't brought out a small diesel because they've already committed a large sum of money to hybrids, whether they're the better idea or not.

  • VERY NICE!!!!!! That car should have had a diesel in it at the first place. 80-90MPG?

  • Over a 3,000 mile cross country trip the car averaged 92mpg once I got the driving technique down. This is without a fully functionaly electric side, a minor diesel engine sensor fault, and the original fuel/air maps. With a bit of straightening out and tuning we should see 100mpg+.

  • What the hell!! Its like pulling your hart out...

  • ...and putting a more efficient heart in.

  • Hell yeah Jake!!!!!! Congrats!!!!! Could have used that on the road trip to florida...would have only needed about 30 gallons of gas there and back...SWEET!

  • I hear you. I'm hoping to use about 30 gallons to make it from Maryland to Washington.

  • Sweet conversion, good luck with the MPG goals!

    -BB

  • Thanks. I'll be able to post additional clips along the cross country trip I'll be making in a few days. We'll see how she does in the MPG department.
