  • 6 long years on your trail

  • you play that well my friend ! I'm buying one of those.

The 12 string takes me somewhere else.

  • Awesome. The capo's on the 2nd fret?

  • @Hruundi good job. do you have any more stupid questions?

  • @Adamkoehler11 Why are you here?

  • Fake!

  • Just simply perfection!!

  • I play this and sing a long to it ever day after work and it makes me feel good.

  • You are without a doubt one of the best contributors on Youtube. I'm glad that you have some great Smiths' songs posted. Please keep the excellent work!

  • Sounds great. Very cool guitar.

  • niice, lovely tone

  • That is a SWEET sounding guitar...great playing, too!

  • Real nice dude!

did marr use a 6 or 12 string Rickenbacker 330 ? thanx and nice playing! =)

  • Does anybody know how I could download this ?

  • @sergemontagne Google "YouTube Downloader." It's free. I think I got mine from Filehippo.

  • Your playing actually made my eyes moist :) I am so happy you covered one of my favorite songs and with a Rickenbacker no less!

  • The best guitar riff I've ever heard! Reminds me lots of wonderful moments.

  • Cool guitar. Nice sound and tone.

  • has johnny marr ever contacted you? just curious?

  • Daniel, you play beautifully. Thanks for posting all these videos.

I noticed you hold the pick in an "unorthodox" fashion. Do you hold it with thumb, index, and middle finger?

  • Yes, with most of the weight on the middle finger, and my thumb angled downward instead of aligned with the strings. It means I can keep the plectrum flat against the strings without having to bend my wrist up so I think it lets me play for longer without getting RSI (which so far I've luckily never had, despite typing on a keyboard all day).

By the way, the "orthodox" method is just what books for beginners say - the truth is you can play the guitar however you want to.

  • Cool. Thank you!

  • Thanks so much. Please tell me one thing. Where did you learn this ? This song has no tabs whatsoever on the internet...only chords that don't quite work. Did you just figure it out on your own ?

  • @mrpentium The Smiths Complete Chord Songbook (Wise Publications - London, 2005)

  • freaking amazing

  • Great cover! What tuning did you use? Nashville (Marr claims to have used Nashville tuning on this song) or Standard.

  • I absolutely love this.

  • Hey, Daniel! Can you tell us a bit about what your setup is to get such perfect ringing sound? Thanks so much for considering :-)

  • yeah mannnnn whats the setup dude!

    awesome cover!!!

  • Sounds like a Roland JC 120 Amp.

  • This is Johnny Marr if you didn't already knew..

  • I love your Smiths playing so much! I just bought a Rickenbacker 370 because of your videos, and I am going to someday be able to play this--I hope!

  • Gorgeous.

  • Hey i want to ask if you can play this guitar with 6 strings on instead of 12, like a regular 6string guitar

  • It's possible - see my cover of Spellbound by Siouxsie And The Banshees - same guitar with 6 strings on it.

  • AWESOME

This is my favorite Smiths song and you are true to Marr's sound - THANKS

  • Thanks for posting this! Seeing you play really helped me figure out a few spots that I couldn't get listening by ear. Cheers!

  • Oh, come on. You're obviously Johnny Marr. Stop trying to fool us, hero!

  • i love the sound in this video, its just lovely and simple...

please do more covers with the same recording set up, i just think the sound quality is just really natural...

ive subscribed anyway! but yeah more video's like this would be awsome!

  • what tuning is this in? not standard?

  • Standard, and notice the capo - admittedly the guitar may have been not in "concert" tuning cos I used to do it by ear, before some people complained.

  • I see, b/c I was looking up the tab for this today and saw the chord progression could be played a few different ways..one started off with a Gsus7th [or something] to an E7,then basics like a D to A then F-sharp to G etc..then saw other tabs starting from Bm..what exact progression is correct if you dont mind me asking?

  • Sorry, I just noticed in your profile you're not a fan of tabs lol I'm actually a drummer who's really a novice guitarist trying to learn tunes I enjoy for my own pleasure..including this one :)

  • Hi...

Yeah the tuning is slight ly flat. Just tune your high E down maybe half a turn (excuse the pun) and play the bit on the high E to match the recording. Once you get it right tune the rest of the strings to the new "tuning"

  • You play in fantastic way. Great tallent excellent song choises. The composer would be proud. Johnny Marr have to hear you play!

  • Damn good. Damn good indeed. The greatest thing is the way you made the guitar settings sound exactly like the original. Nice.

  • Stunning. Marr would be proud. =]

  • muito bom !

  • i said i like it here can i stay , i like it here can i stay ...and do you have a vacancy for a backscrubber?

  • this is amazing my friend. such a beautiful song and such a beautiful guitar mix well together. you are excellent.

  • you win man, good job.

  • sounds great

  • Every time I want to write that it's not quite right, then I realise that you're doing everything, not just rhythm, and I think: Wow!

  • And if you have five seconds to spare

Then I'll tell you the story of my life

  • i love you :D

  • Are you perchance a descendant of Humphrey Chimpden Earwicker, the central character in Joyce's 'Finnegan's Wake'?

  • I really enjoy your stuff, my friend. Its almost creepy how many of your videos are of my favorite songs. Keep up the great work!

  • quite, quite perfect..

  • perfeito!!!

  • You 2 guitars and it'll sound soooo much better. Craig Gannon perhaps. . .

  • nicely done

  • perfect.

  • very very nice

  • cool

  • I like your version. It's interesting that you play it with capo on 2nd fret. I should try that too. I always wondered about the correct way of playing it. I play it in standard tuning without capo. However, it sounds to me like the original is in alternate tuning. Does anyone have an idea?

  • The chords in the background are definitely being played on a 12-string, if that helps. It must be tricky to get it in the right key without a capo - could you post a video of how you do it?

  • I just posted a video response. You can see it's really not tricky at all to play it without capo. I admit yours sounds closer to the original, but I just love that ringing open E chord.

  • what effect do u use on william

  • Nice job... really clean and full sound w/ great reverb. This is one of my favorite Smiths songs. I enjoyed the performance. Thanks!

  • No, that's a good point. Well, I never liked that song anyway.

  • The ric is plugged straight into a VS2480CD, which has onboard effects, so I put it through a guitar amp modelling called "clean twin" which supposedly sounds like an old tube amp, and a delay effect. Then the output goes straight into a MacBook's digital optical input.

I will try "Heaven knows I miserable" next...

  • bravo! next heaven knows im miserable now!

  • Nice playing, what amp/settings are you using to get that sound?
