I run barrels,poles,etc.It isn't cruel whatsoever.People just go by stereotypes.I use a whip on lazy horses.I don't use a whip on horses who like to run fast they don't need it.I wear spurs because that's in how I cue.I'd love trying some more western sports.I'd also love trying English,One of my best friends ride English and barrels.Will you people saying that crap about cruel.Like that above comment says:You can't kick a horse harder than another horse kicks him out in the pasture.Not possible

Barrel racing is not just running in three circles or around three barrels and it isn't cruel either i think if you can't comment good thing than why watch videos and stuff you cannot handle what so ever. i used to Barrel Race until my Father got in a Bull riding accident and made me sell all of our Horses from his little mistake and i never barrel raced since so i do not want to hear oh, it is cruel blah blah blah. so cram it, and Enjoy the videos your watching(=

Why are people saying barrel racing,and any other horse sports are cruel?? If you use a whip,its used a cue,or guide to let the horse know that it needs to go faster. and the spurs,they are also just used as a cue or guide to let the horse knows that it needs to do a certain action.

Excellent video. I'm an older barrel racer that doesn't do it anymore, but I can definately tell you that the love of this will NEVER leave you. So enjoy every minute of it. Your best support is your fellow barrel racers. I am friends with quite a few of them on FB and while we are now the moms we still like watching this sport and talking about it. Barrel racing is one of the few sports that horses actually kinda do while in the pasture by them selves. Running and turning on a dime.

OK let me tell you all somthing im not trying to be rude but if you think barrel racing is so "cruel" but if you ride english and are commenting on just how "cruel" barrel is you shouldnt be because obvisouly you dont know a thing about barrel racing! i have jumped my horse bareback and dont get me wrong its fun but to MAKE a horse jump when they really dont want to is just as cruel as barrel racing! Which in my opinion barrel racing IS NOT cruel! There are some horses that love to do both these

Barrel racing isn't cruel who ever said that dosnt know what there talkin about(: I barrel race and it's the most amazing thing ever! All the horses that barrel race love there sport or they wouldn't listen or do anything the rider tell's them to, I have a horse, he's my baby.. we barrel race all the time... ome people think it's wrong to use a whip or spur's but think of it this way... Horses have very tough skin they can barly feel it... i dont use a whip but i do use spur's my horse is lazy(:

If barrel racing is cruel then show jumping and dressage are just as cruel. When will you ever see a horse naturally jump 6 feet just because or canter in a circle to look fancy? You wont, in the end the horses that are doing these sports love what they do an that's why they are the best at it and are competing successfully in it.

Love how people say it is cruel when i can through my horse in a arena with nothing on him and no rider and he will go run the barrel pattern all by himself if it was so cruel and he dint like it he wouldnt do it. you have no clue what your talking about so just be quiet !

I also barrel race. I don't believe in using spurs and whips unless it is absolutly needed. Some times my horse needs a little reminder, i will put the spurs on for a couple of minutes trotting or cantering in figure 8s or circles (they are spurs with a small nub on the end. no spikes). I never wear them in the arena because i feel if the horse needs them in the arena then you arn't doing something right out side of the arena. Am so tired of seeing ppl spure the crap out of them.

What I think, barrel racing CAN be cruel if you beat it REALLY hard with a whip and kick it's sides really powerful with spurs, and also jerking it's head really hard around the barrel. So barrel racing doesn't HAVE to be cruel. I actually love watching people barrel race if they do it "humanly". But, in english we don't really KICK our horses, we do it using "contact" and certain cues. and we don't use a whip, which is long, we use a short crop and just tap them with it to get their attention.

I barrel race i dont use a whip i dont use spurs either (nothing is wrong with either i just dont use them) If its bc some pple use a whip and spurs think about this...You cant hit or kick a horse any harder than they're kicking eachother in the pasture.

@countrygirl9519 Is she trying to anticipate the barrel?? If so lope her to it, and instead of going around it, make a circle the other way. then go around the barrel. (in practice) she should stop anticipating... I had the same problem, and played around a little bit... I'll try and get a video up when i get back to my home state...
