The primitive way to convert is to project film (assume you have a projector; can probably rent one) onto a screen, and then "film" it with a digital videocamera that's on a tripod to avoid shake. Or you can go online and have someone professionally convert. Good luck!
My dad took movies for abc news and the movietone news reels. I have several reels of really good riot footage. I would be glad to post, but need some info on how to convert to digital format.
Weird, I was there! My father was taking me to Ancon School (we were Americans living in the Panama sector). I remember him making his way slowly through that crowd finally stopping at a line of garbage cans separating Panama from the Canal Zone. The protesters must have seen his dilemma and had some sympathy for this little father-son team because I remember him finally waving and shouting some slogan in Spanish then floored it raming through the garbage cans and the Panamanians applauding!
What grade were you in at the time; I was in second grade. Do you remember getting tear-gassed that day? They released school early and as we were led out into the street the tear gas wafted back over the school and sent a couple of hundred kids screaming and running to find their parents! Funny now, not so much then.
I was in 4th grade (Mrs. Holden) and I remember the chaos but not the tear gas. I remember that scene with my dad like it was yesterday. I had never witness that side of him before, or since! But rest of the day is pretty hazy. Funny how selective memory is. I searched your video in vain for our car. It was quite distinctive - a VERY old black Chevy convertible with just a hole where the grill belongs (my dad was a mechanic). Much thanks for posting that video, what memories!
Dude- this is actually interesting footage, but you need to generate a better transfer. you would be doing a great historical service. What is this? A video of a projection onto a screen? You can do better.
you are correct; this is a poor transfer, but I just don't have the cash to take 8mm film to digital. Yes it is historic footage; I and a ton of other US kids managed to get tear-gassed when riot troops shot it too close to the American elementary school nearby...
Sorry, but you are wrong. May 1958 riots were not anti-american. They were a student's protest against the panamanian government turned sour when Jose Manuel Arauz a young student was killed by police causing a national chaos.
