Yes you can.. make sure that you have enough water to boil them in a pressure cooker. so I will not get burnt.. (it's difficult to check how much water you have left in a pressure cooker..since you can't open it while you are cooking..)
I tried making this twice. The first time came out like soup because I just left it. You cannot overcook it or else it will be watery, you got to keep watch and right when it becomes squishable, remove it from the heat! So then you'd get a thicker paste. It took me only 2hrs to get it to squish. Also, you got to use Adzuki beans, not just any red bean, buying from a bulk food store is the best and freshest since those packages at asian markets are most likely pretty old.
Maybe you put too much liquid when you ground the cooked beans.. Just keep cook the bean paste ..so the liquid will be evaporated and the paste become thicker.. keep stir it.
I thought of it too.. but I didn't try it yet.. so can't tell the result.. we don't have canned beans in Korea like here (America)... so use use dried beans or fresh beans.. another thing.. is My husband said.. he never saw the red bean from can.. I mean..the same kind of red bean I used for this recipe... the red bean from can in usa is different kinds of bean.. so the taste will be different.
when i cook the beans if the beans break when i rub them but there is still hard bits in the beans does that mean i still have to cook them and what can i do if its a bit runny?
yes.. no worry your beans become mushy when you cook...it's important to cook completely.. you don't want to raw beam flavor from your red bean paste.. so make sure..it's cooked.. thanks
LOL, that is so sweet and I just subscribed to you because I really like Korean food/dishes and I really like that you have a channel to teach us how to cook them! but I just wanted to say - you shouldn't say 'mushy' like that to a German person unless you want to get laughed at. ^^
I just finished making my red bean paste, but it seems to be a little runnier than what it looks like in the video. It is still hot as it has just come off the cooker. Will it get a little more solid like a paste once it has cooled?
The time for cooking the bean can be various depending on the power (heat) of your stove... so as I showed in this video.. cook the beans until the bean breaks easily with your fingers when you rub them. ^^
aeri' i want to make jajangmyun/jajangbob..but i cant find black bean paste at my nearest grocery..and u said that this method cannot be used to make black bean paste right..? So can u make a video/write on your blog on how to make black bean paste? Please.. ^-^

@aeriskitchen This looks good. I bought your cookbook for my kindle and am excited to cook korean at home! I work at a Korean restaurant but the cooks don't have time to show me how to make everything :)
Dear Aeri, when i go to my favourite korean bbq restaurant, they have a side dish of spicy seaweed. The seaweed is not stringy, but leafy and the spicy paste is very sour and sweet. I can't find a recipe for it online, would you please give me an idea of what this side dish could be? Thank you!!
anyoung aerie! thanks for all of your time and effort to show us these wonderful recipes - i have already tried many of them and they are all so delicous :) i was wondering if you make the bean paste for the cannellini cookies the same way as you make this (but only with white beans? keep up the good work! loads of love from denmark
thanks for your comment.. about your question..yes..very similar..but there are some different parts.. such as.. you have to peel of the skins for the white kidney beans. I will post the recipe too.. thanks
it doesn't matter..which water you soak in.. i used cold water.. the longer you soak .. the shorter you will need to cook the beans.. I did 3 hours..but you can do over night..
Can i ask how do u make the red bean ice cream out of this paste?? cuz i saw at the beginning of the video u said that we could use it for ice cream... but i have no idea how.... :( plzz reply me cuz i really want to know how to make the red bean ice cream so i could make for my "special person" :P... Thanks a lot!!!
Just wondering why you didn't just soak the beans over night, close to 24 hours. Would have cut your cooking/boiling time way down. Saving on $/fuel for cooking.
Just an idea doll. Love the recipes, keep them coming.
Thank you so much for this recipe! I have made it before but mine always came out runny... This is a much better recipe than the one I tried! Going to make some today!!! (^_^)
I think.. each beans have different taste and texture to it... so I recommend you try red bean for this recipe.. there are similar group of beans though....
This looks great! If you do not mind me asking, is there a spicy version to this recipe? Is there any specific type of hot peppers that should be used? I'm thinking of making my own hot pepper infused oil to fry the beans in, something to add more flavor than heat. Or is it better to add peppers directly into the beans? I've never tried to make this myself before. Thanks!
@aquia80 most of the time, if not all the time, red bean paste are used in asian desserts..i dont know why you'd want to add peppers in it lol! a lot of the time asians use beans for sweet dishes rather than savoury like the in the west..
@srainy I have seen seen it used in Korean, Thai, and Chinese style cooking. Adding a little dab to sauce will give it a great flavor. I live in the Asia-Pacific and see it in foods all of the time at restaurants or food stands. I don't care if its are traditional or not, it tastes so good. There are no rules to cooking- everything goes! :o)
Oops,, to be honest, I don't see a recipe.. combining red bean paste and hot pepper... maybe close thing I can think is.. red bean prroidge.. we eat it with kimchi which is spicy food..but again..the hot peppers are not not in the red bean paste dish itself though..
Can you sub white sugar for brown or honey??
