Loved the scene when he appeared in one of the mirror universe episode in front of Quark as a real person :-) right before he was shot by mirror universe Julian Bashir. Really funny scene.
The Character Vic Fontaine was an excellent edition to DS9 for a few reasons. He was an excellent entertainer and he provided the audience with some scope, as we gain enjoyment from watching the exploits of the characters they themselves would not attain the same level of entertainment from their day to day activities to them it would be second nature. However a character like Vic could be likened to someone playing a video game at the end of a long day to unwind, he brings us scope and realism.
@RushLimborg those two got girls. They just couldn't stop pineing for Dax.
Wait! who does quark end up with? Roe Laren??? Am I crazy or wasn't that the name of that bejorian girl on Next Generation? You're not telling me Quark ends up with her, are you? How are they alike? I'd like to know what happened with the cardasian natima or his ex-wife the Klingon. Quark even had a clothed ferengi girl, but he only liked females of other species to be more equal. He only liked female ferengi naked.
@RushLimborg Ro Laren! But Ro Laren was even more bad-tempered than Kira! How could this even be possible? Well, she's quite a rogue too... And Quark loves his women to have a punch... Maybe... No! It can't work. I just can't imagine Ro giving umox to Quark.
The best version of this song is by MaxQ, when they sang it to win the 2007 International Contest in Denver.
You can watch a rerun performance at another event here: v=VRFD6XK1PFI — this video is poor quality, but you can get an idea from it. The original is MUCH better!
Oh God... I hate scientists who try to watch Star Trek. IT'S A TV SHOW FOR KIRK'S SAKE! IF YOU WANT REAL SCIENCE, GO READ A BOOK OR SOMETHING! By the way, great video, pal. Thanks for sharing!
It could be worse, you can be in a movie theatre watching Monthy Python's Holy Grail. Everyone will be quoting every line and really messing up the movie.
I liked the Vic Fontained character & singing but agree the concept of a singing hologram is ponitless. Consistency also wasn't the writer's strong suit in explaining how they worked - initially they're supposed to work like replicators - converting energy to matter (which is why a holographic bullet with safeties off can kill) but then they're photos with "forcefields." However, you can touch or feel a hologram and it feels real? Doesn't make sense.
I never really got the point of these, from the POV of the Trek characters.
These were holograms, animated by the Holodeck computer.
It was roughly analogous to listening to a MIDI file these days. Who would care? It would only be showing off the talent of the Holodeck scenario programmer.
Wouldn't listening to real musicians be more rewarding? Riker played a mean trombone, for instance. Out of the 999 other crew, certainly there would've been enough for a small jazz combo!
True he has no place within science fiction but he's called relief. Relief is a concept used by story writers to add some sort of escapism or an element of fun to an otherwise sincere, serious or muddy plot. Like Dixon Hill was briefly used in Star Trek VIII. It differs from COMIC relief as the escapism is more general and not necessarily comic.
I think the Vic Fontaine episodes in DS9 are brilliant. I don't know what you're talking about saying he doesn't belong (come on, he's only in it a couple of times anyway), those episodes are classics! :D
Besides, he got Kira and Odo together so we have to be eternally grateful!!
2. I know exactly who he is. His real name is James Darren and he was a popular singer/actor in the 60's.
3. Mom DOES remember him (i.e., James Darren, not the hologram). She thought it was nice that he's singing again, and that a new audince got to see him.
Great song for Valentine's Day. :)

Don't worry, Bashir and Quark. You won't be "losers" for long.
Quark will get the girl in the relaunch novels--Ro Laren, to be exact.
And of course, Julian will find peace in the arms of the lovely Ezri Dax!

Vic Fontaine was a great character. He was fun, he was charming, and he added a bit more life to the station.

No he was worse than Janeway.
Like it or not she had a character. He didn't.

Vic had class, and he was definitely a precursor to the doctor.

How so? One was a stupid pointless singer that ruined the series and the other was a hologram gradually gaining humanity.

you have to watch the episode where nog gets back after loosing a leg, vic starts to evolve. At least he didn't start out as I whiny medkit

I've seen every episode. He doesn't change at all apart from having even MORE screen time. That episode was terrible.
And you get episodes like the last one where they ruin the entire feeling by spending 14 minutes at Vics.
He's just a terrible character
IGiveAndYouTake 3 years ago
and he sings a lot better too.. :)

You could create an entire orchestra from the Red Shirt army, however they'd all be killed off by the end of the overture.

He has no place in a sci-fi series, but he's still great! My mom remebers him from back in the day. I'm glad he found work again.

Please tell me that was a joke.
You DO know Vic Fontaine is not a real person.
And if you think thats Sinatra.. God help you..
