He sought and was given to permission to comment directly over the game like this because there were a hundred kids in the hall and he wanted to make it interesting and at the same time educate the youngsters. It was also a fund-raiser that raised a huge amount of money for charity.

The game was a fundraising exhibition for Karpov. Those are two rich guys playing with Kasparov and Carlsen. It's all for fun and "that annoying commentator" is GM Ashley. He's there to support Karpov too. Karpov even shows up and talks himself. Some of you are making it seem like Ashley showed up uninvited to a serious match and just stood there talking. It's a fundraiser and all for show.

The commentator is Maurice Ashley, the first African-American chess Grandmaster in history, this was just a friendly game and Maurice has a really nice approach to chess. He also did a few DVD's and he travels all around the world trying to promote chess in various countries. He is also a friend of Josh Waitzkin :)

Much respect to Maurice Ashley as a player, his accomplishments and what he's done for chess and the Harlem community, but no worthwhile chess match should have this kind of obnoxious OTB commentary, it's disruptive to the players. A "non-serious" match featuring two world-champion class players is still potentially worthy of future study, so they should at least be allowed to properly concentrate. This is as bad as it would be to announce in earshot of elite pro golfers while making a putt!

I wouldn't like this for a proffessional game, like in a tournament. But it's nice to get the players reactions midgame like this. It was fun and engaging. It is a bit of pity Kasparov takes it too seriously .. but if you're going to lose no one better to lose to the world #1, who you've helped train! honestly, I thought Kasparov's style would benefit a less skilled player more, but surprisingly Carlsen's positional plays seemed to work out well with his partner.
