  • this song kind of reminds me of the book of eli. (the beginning at least)

  • seems like an excellent system of defense

  • dude, i have been training Goju for 20 years, its nice to see we are doing similar bunki, when i say training i mean training hard twice a week, we have a lot of contact in our club but it makes it fun and bruises heal

  • I do have to disagree with everyone. The music is awesome! lol. The video is also awesome! It's so great to see fellow Goju-Ryu practitioners at their best!

  • @1983jreid

Sir, your taste is impeccable. Many thanks. :-)

  • i agree this music suck, thanks i now have a headache.

  • @greensnakeeyes93

See my reply on #9. This is Bluegrass from your country, part of your heritage, it should be in your blood. :-))

  • The music is annoying! Otherwise, good vid.

  • Nice practical demonstration of a very good discipline

  • thats the worst music ive ever heard no offense

  • @ninjasniperassassin

Non taken ninjasniperassassin. Each to his own, mate

  • That crotch grab and lift in the beginning was just wrong. You could've left him with one gonad at least, LOL.

  • @deek77

Apparently he has no use for them. Anyway, he is now "Not as other men" and speaks highly..

  • @fumikomgeri ROFL, I would think so. Awesome stuff BTW, Cheers.

  • This is a great demonstration of Karate period!! I've been practicing Shotokan for a long time now and now because of the school I'm going to now will be practicing Goju Ryu so thanks for the heads up on what I'm in for it looks more very dynamic and practical looking forward to doing this.

  • nice techinques!

looks like a good club to be part of

  • Beautiful goju ryu, there ist a good a video strog, slowly and lethal, the slowly and the stron the water of rivers and raidens.

(Thank you zenkenshu, very poetic.Sadly,I don't speak Spanish but, with modern technology, I can translate you words.)

  • Goju Ryu is beautiful - lethal but inherently good for anyone doing it.

    Horrific music on this though.

  • It sure is kentstott1. Goju ryu I mean. The music?Well, we all have different tastes don't we. :-)

  • AWESOME VIDEO...no tag in Goju Ryu.I'm a student/instructor of Seigo Kan Karate Do(Goju Ryu) and was quite impressed with your bunkai and spirit.

  • so, who said, that there is no defense against grappling in karate? And else i wanted to say som things about traditional schools - many people don't knows nothing about karate and then they say's that traditionals does not realy fight - it is not a true. You just see some training and say that that's it, ut there are kumite too and pure traditional schools are better than sports, becouse sports is for show, but traditional karate is for real fighting

  • This is the first time I have viewed your posts and I wanted to commend your club/association. It is rare to see such practical and traditional karate these days. Nice one.

  • @Aiki421

    Glad you enjoyed them.Cheers:)

  • These are good - Keep them coming. I love to see, learn and practice froam all Martial Arts, trouble is, it takes a lifetime to learn one.

  • I enjoyed watching what you all presented.

  • Im a Shuri Ryu man and I have to say I love what you guys are doing and really enjoy your videos.Thank you for posting them.

  • this is not bunkai,it s a bad interpretation of kaisai!

anyway better job than most of the staff you can find on youtube.

    shorei kan student

  • @goju974

    23Nov09

    Thanks goju974. Don't talk wet!

If this isn't bunkai then I, all the people I've met all over the World for the last 20 years, the other contributors to Youtube & Sensei Higaonna are wrong. But you, a 22year old from Oz are putting us right. Ah,

the arrogance of the young (sigh)

If you think it's a bad interpretation ,fair enough.Kaisai translates as either settlement, or holding a meeting.

Perhaps you could clarify your statement

so I'm more able to understand:) Ta

  • hey,i didnt want to be arrogant.

many people believe that the kuryu kata are the strict representation of fighting technique but that s wrong the kata derived from the real thecnique.each karate school after the world war 2 create kata to protect their better tehcnique.

anyway, i practise shorei kan which is a style creqte by toguchi sensei.he develope bunkai and kiso kumite to help us to find the real tehcnique which are hide in kuryu kata

watch shorei kan 974 on youtube

    it my school

  • @goju974 Please read this quote

The techniques of the kata were never developed to be used against a professional fighter, in an arena or on a battlefield. They were, however, most effective against someone who has no idea of the strategy being used to counter their aggressive behaviour.

    'Choki Motobu'(19th Cent.Okinawan Karate Master)

I watched the vid & now see what you mean. We aren't interested in presentation but the practical use of the principles of the kata in combat (cont)

  • @goju974

i.e. against untrained armed attackers. That's what karate was devised for,not for karateka to engage in a skilled exchange. We leave presentation to others, that's not what we're about. "Presentation" doesn't exist when you're attacked. There are no kaisai in what we do,it's all there in the kata but you do have to look for it, or be shown.

There is nothing secretive or mystical about karate if you use your imagination.

Don't be bound by one application to a kata technique.Cheers:)

  • agree with what you say, nothing mysterious about karate if we work hard..

but some people had good level in battlefield specific tehcnique had to be developed to fight efficiently to keep energy.the real purpose of karate is to be able to protect himself at 20 year old but also at 70 years.

anyway, i m not oz , i am from reunion island a french territory.

i v got a shorei kan school, and try to preserve the original karate that my father give me..

    competition destroy the karate..

    cheer

  • Sweet action!

  • Nice very nice make me feel a bit more motivation toward Goju ryu.

  • 2Nov 09

    Thanks Lamarent, much appreciated.

Do you practice Goju or just thinking of starting?

  • Yes I practice Goju ryu But I havent gotten deeper into it. I was Very busy So I dont have time to go back to the Dojo Now I have some free time So I want to go back to the dojo. I miss it : )

  • i like this art its one of the non bullcrap arts goju up there with kyokoshin teakwondo and filipino martial arts, jeet kune do etc etc

  • Mmm. I remember seeing Sensei Bakkies Laubsher in South-Africa. Long time ago. It is unbelievable what Goju-Ryu can be capable of.

I would have liked to see him in a real kumite competition.

I was looking all over the internet for anything from him. Thanks for the post.

  • PART 4:

i know that's to idealistic but i would love if karate masters from all styles would combine the arts into ONE TRUE karatedo. Put together all the best techniques, their experience and knowledge to form one martial art. i actually despise all those styles and the arguing about which one is the best. Shotokan sucks, Kyoukushinkai rules etc. pp. what comes from a common root, should merge again i think.

  • finally a true karate and not this sport shit. because of that, people thinks that karate is worthless. very nice vid. i like the exercise you do.

  • 24/09/09

    Thanks initdialog,but please don't write

the sporting side off.Granted it may not be very effective in the street but I believe if it were not for the sport, and its popularity "traditional"karate would have withered away, known only to a few (less as time passed) on some little island near Japan.Maybe Funakoshi realised

this, so Shotokan went the "sporting" way

to suit the Japanese Martial Arts

    authorities of the era. Cheers.

  • PART 1:

true. but there should be ONE karate like Funakoshi always said. his students called it Shotokan. they should teach the true karate to people and then they can use only allowed moves for competitions. if i know all karate moves, i can limit myself to specific ones in sport. if i were to learn ONLY sport karate moves, i would probably lose against true karateka and on the streets.

  • PART 2:

for me martial arts are a form of self-defense. an martial art should help the user to defend himself in the most effective way. sport versions castrate the true arts. i know that sport is more popular but to create "only sport karate" styles is wrong in my opinion. also there are dojos which learn only the sport versions. if somebody want to be a professional karateka, he can easily use his knowledge to compete.

  • PART 3:

if someone who learned true karate can't restain himself from using forbidden techniques in a competition, than he should rethink about his attitude and skills.

  • i mostly agree with you but karate has something for everyone, what they do with THEIR karate is of no concern to me. and truthfully if you tally it up...sport fighters win a lot more fights than traditional fighters do. sport arts like judo, muay thai, sport karate..etc produce great fighters. alot of traditional schools don't really fight. not all, but alot of them. it also depends on the competition, is it a kyokushin tournament? sabaki? or some ISKA point karate with 30 second kiai's?

  • i agree... i cant stand that mma shit man... im of the mind that yes u should learn as much as u can so that u can be ready for anything that is thrown at u but u should have one true art

  • first, you will need to spend years to defend yourself properly with only one art. even if you are good at boxing, you lose against a judoka on the ground. if you can't fight on the ground, you should learn to be really good against tackling. even so, one day you can be taken to the ground.... then what to do?

traditions are good, but today are a lot of hybrid matial arts that help to defend against all kind of fighters. what is the use of karate if it doesn't help against grappling?

  • q suerte q exciste la edision porque se ve al principio q el defensor del ataque tiene la pierna puesta afuera de la del atacante corrigiendose en el cuadro siguiente. muy mal eso.

  • 17Sept09

I'm sorry ezeytube "no habla Espanol" is all I know of Spanish,so unfortunately I can't make a proper reply. Can anyone help, please?

  • I train under Bakkies sensei here in South Africa, and hve had the "honour" of being on the recieving side of his demos a few times. He just moves waaay to fast for a normal human being. :)

  • 14Aug09

You're right there elmarm88.For a big bloke he certainly can.

  • Try grabbing both ankles instead and pulling his feet out from underneath him. its risky but it does work...

Thanks for your comment 8dahar1. May I point out karate is for use against untrained attackers, therefore what you suggest would (imo) be unlikley. However your point is taken. Sorry to be so long in replying, just returned from holidays.

  • who says karate is for use against untrained attackers, thats bullshit, i know theres allot of crap written about this, but thats all it is crap.

karate/kung fu/ martial arts in general can be used to your own limitations.

you can be an excellent karateka who trains hard and becomes a lethal weapon, with hands like sledgehammers, or you can become the grade hunting karateka, who can walk through his kata, cant use it, wears an xxl black belt, with hands like a new born baby, its up to you

  • @singhakabuttar grade hunting karateka, who can walk through his kata dude you are so right, pisses me off, there are so many people who say what do i have to learn for the next grade, i just say karate

  • Liked everything but the knee takedown. I know some people who can pivot and give you their left knee while falling down. But great job otherwise!!

  • Great video. I had the good fortune to attend a gasshuku with Bakkis Sensei, and he is an amazingly strong and exceptional martial artist. Great video. Thanks!

  • This was excellent, thank you. I enjoy all of your postings, some of the most practical Goju I have found...I have been practicing J.K.F. Goju Ryu, I am wondering what differences there are opposed to I.O.G.K.F.?

  • i moved house (and thus dojo: jfk to iogkf) last year, so all i can say is that the jfk dojo was more competition-based, whereas the okinawans put more emphasis on hard physical training (chishi stone, makiwara, etc).

this is just my experience; i´m happy to be corrected.

  • Hi I am a shitoryu guy. Seiyunchin, saifa, seipai, saifa, gekisai are all in our syllabus, though with variances. Still, five stars applications!

  • Thanks makai2006. Have you been studying Shitoryu long?

  • i would have watched it all if it werent for that annoying music

  • OK kungfufreddy,

Many thanks for your comment.Oh, by the way, you could have always turned the music off or down. Still, no matter. Thanks again

  • Somebody told me goju ryu is the best karate there is. I doubt it , it can't be better than shotokan or kyokushin or can it and explain me why.

  • I studied Goju ryu a while back, and while I sadly don't remember too much, I do remember that everything had a reason. Stances were versatile unlike (for instance) tang soo do where you normally sit in a locked-in and ready to kick sort of stance. We'd be expected to explain the purpose of each move from forms. It is also a very practical, self-defense oriented martial art, as opposed to many others that are designed more for show or tournaments. It's still exotic and interesting though!

  • So, its a very good karate. But, do they even have sparring?

  • Yes, definetely. I didn't mean that they don't compete in sparring (they do - and the do very well). What I meant was that it isn't a style which was designed specifically around tournaments - meaning that it is a good karate for the "real world". ...Not that I've ever actually had to defend myself.

  • Do you think you can use Goju Ryu in the ring?

  • Look up Sensei Gavin Mulholland. He's put students trained only in Goju in Cage Rage.

  • Most fights (real fights) only need one or two effective technique to end it. Goju Ryu is about breaking the fight down to the basics. If a fight takes dozens of techniques and the opponent is still fighting back, then I would guess the techniques are not very good. Agree??

  • In a real street fight the situation is fluid and the first technique you use may miss or only be partially successful. The idea is to keep you thinking in a stressful situation and adapting to find a technique which is effective in any given situation.

No true Karateka wants to fight, but if they must then they fight to overwhelm the opponent no matter what that takes.

    All imo of course.

  • goju has many dangerous techniques like, eye gouges, groin rips, throat/spine attacks, joint attacks, etc that cant be used in sparring, for this you have bunkai. bunkai is the practice of kata in a broken down format. some schools do spar and enter tournaments aswell, some even enter the cage rage matches. as far as goju ryu is concerned its versatile to be used anywhere. the street is its home.

  • its not better or worse than shotokan or kyokoshinkai, there are some differences in the kata, goju is more for close range applications and circular movements, shotokan has more linear movements, kyokoshin has elements of goju and shotokan within the style, it would be more beneficial to learn/add from each of these styles to your own chosen style than to decide which ones the best, the old masters learnt from each other, so can we!

  • a real eye-opener! enjoyed every second.

  • Pure brilliance!!!

  • outstanding !!! * CLAPS *
