@mikedd56 If you understand the grueling process that it takes to becomes a professor, you would take back what you said about "she made out well from this". That is the reason why most professors choose to stay out of spot light - especially politics. In universities, professors are treated with respect - in total contrary to what was on display in that hearing, where witness and victim were treated as criminals, and subject to humiliation without a defense lawyer.
...sexual harassment. And what are you talking about 'grueling process' all you have to have is a left wing mentality & your a shoe in for a professor. Case in point, admitted terrorist Bill Ayers. And what do you mean she didnt make out well, she got a book deal, got to be a professor, she did a 60min, she was treated like a national celebrity who brought awareness to the sexual h. issue. All she had to do was sit thru the hearings that she instigated.
@mikedd56 Sexual harassment leaves a permanent scar. 10 years means nothing. And to see a person who humiliated you and displayed his supremacy toward you, to be a Supreme Court judge - or the president of the US, is the ultimate insult. To see him preach about justice, when you know he is anything but, how would you react? Oh, and again, 20 years ago, for a women to rise to high position beside men, you have to do repulsive things too. Like work with the person harassed you. Or no job for you.
...Clinton is too much. Clinton has a mile long list of women all claiming he molested, harassed, raped, etc. And how bout Linda Tripp who exposed this sexual deviant who was getting blow jobs from a 23yr half his age in the white house. She did the right thing the media destroyed her life. She didnt get a book deal, or treated with respect, or a professor, etc. You wanna explain why Hill is a hero & Tripp is a bad guy. Dont bother, the media attacks the right & protects the left.
@mikedd56 There is a clear difference between the branches of offices. Clinton, while being acquitted of perjury, and obstruction of justice, agreed to to a five-year suspension of his Arkansas law license, and thus was automatically suspended from the United States Supreme Court bar, from which he then chose to resign.
OK so if your practicing law then its not cool to sexually harass your female subordinates but anyone else like the president for example its cool. And what about all the women who accused Clinton of harassment. What about their 'due process' what about their justice. B/c the only case that saw the light of day was Lewinski and that was consensual.
As for Hill she reported her 10yr old allegations to the FBI. And then, what a shocker, the interview was leaked to the...
The ability to govern, based on our (the left) understanding, has little to do with sex. But the ability to practice law, an entirely different matter, stands in strict contrast to the charge.
I did not once judge Justice Thomas. The complain I have is the process. Sexual harassment is a serious charge, which should be resolved in court, not in a Senate hearing where conflict of interest run rampant, and left the accuser without a lawyer. This is MY MAIN POINT.
...press. How on earth did that happen I wonder. Ur right tho they never should of had these hearings, only the FBI should have dealt with it. If they did you never would have heard of Anita Hill, b/c they never would have taken it to court, b/c there was nothing to take to court. All she claimed was he asked her out a bunch, something about a pubic hair on a coke can & he talked about ridiculous porno films including bestiality. I gotta say even at face value that...
...one is hard to swallow. I couldnt imagine anyone in any job talking about animal porn w/ co-workers. Am I right, who the hell would do that. Let alone up in white collar polite society & to a female, esp. since he was supposedly trying to get in her pants.
But w/e putting all that aside & assuming it was all true there is nothing criminal about any of it.
Why do you keep talking about an absence of a lawyer like they forbid her from having one. How many times do I...
@mikedd56 Thomas had never once face his charge. He instead derided "the attack from the left". The charge was thus never resolved. His strategy, while protect his chance of being appointed as Supreme Court Justice, left a permanent scar on the prestige of justice itself - his own credibility was never restored by legal process. And the Supreme Court, instead of the main pillar of justice, became the joke of the nation. If he is innocent, why not resolve the charge in court?
...need to say it she isnt in trouble, shes like a witness. Witnesses dont have lawyers when they testify in court, do they. Or do u think she needs a lawyer to protect her feelings from getting hurt. These hearings are only being held b/c of what she claimed so its a lil late for the victim card. Her timing is like an ex-wife showing up after you won the lottery saying she still loves you. Its called suspicious, so boo hoo they questioned her story.
@mikedd56 Again you call me left wing. This is not a matter of left or right, this is a matter of Justice and due process. This is the matter of sexual harassment being a serious charge and a violation of law or not. She was not protected by a lawyer, she, the accuser, was treated as the accused. She is not merely reporting crime, she is reporting a crime while being the victim. The simple due process of law requires that.
...so concerned w/ due process & all wouldnt Thomas be innocent until proven guilty in court, yet your sure Hill is the victim. Actually it amazes how so many assume Thomas is guilty & how so few even bother to get the details. Like I said all she really accused him of was being a creep & I've seen tons of comments w/ stuff like they hope Thomas dies from cancer & suffers horribly from it. I guess they think he raped her I mean WTF
@mikedd56 You also guilty of jumping to conclusion yourself, so don't blame me. I was merely point out her reason of going public ~if~ the charge was indeed true. That huge ~if~ can only resolve in a court of justice with all due process. You do not understand how the legal system works and due process, and I understand. Its OK. You don't understand the seriousness of the charge, its also OK. But it is absolute unacceptable for a Supreme Court Justice - the symbol of Justice.
@mikedd56 I mentioned Clinton simply to quote his ideas on governing. Don't confuse the sex and the charges. Read the book. And then we can have a serious discussion. I have read The Conscience of a Conservative. And although I don't agree with some of the point, some makes senses. We all disagree at some points - just don't defend your ideal at all cost. Even at the cost of our conscience - or justice.
@mikedd56 One of the most gentlemen - with the best manner I know happened to be a black person - he is French though. Barack Obama is black. And he is one of the most intelligent person I know. Dr Martin Luther King is one of my personal hero, and one of the great intellectual of the 20st century - some of his speech are true classic.
@mikedd56 I have absolutely no problem with being black - sometimes being minority even make them to be more inclined toward understanding the point of others. - the thing I have problem with is modern conservatism. The viciousness of modern conservatism to achieve its goal is unprecedented - such as in this fine display of male power.
@mikedd56 The amount of hate speech and character assassination, where you care more about naming individuals with colorful names than having civilized discussion on policies, find out what work and what doesn't, is revolting. If you can name one individual that can repulse all or more than half the ideas put forth in the book "Back To Work" written by Bill Clinton, I am willing to have a serious civilized discussion. And leave the name calling out of this. I am older than a 10 years old kid.
What kind of Inquisition is this? Is there any investigation on conflict of interest here? A Republican Congressman act as the Judge, the defensive lawyer and spokesman, while shutting others' right to speak. "She has a problem of being rejected by men she was attracted to". Who give him the right to say what SHE think - who does he think he is, a psychologist? A psychic? A psychopath, more like.
A psychopath?! Nah thats not overly dramatic at all. Plus he didnt even say that retard, he was reading from the report. Listen right before he says 'on page 3.' Why are you so sure shes telling the truth. You realize this happens to republicans all the time ESPECIALLY black republicans. The media cant stand them. Almost everytime a republican is about to get a higher position or an election is near. Its always the same story out pops someone with dirt on said republican. I mean...
...the alleged harassment took place 10yrs ago. The vetting process was over & he was about to become a Supreme Court Judge when..
'oh oh wait dont let him in yet, Thomas s. harassed me'
'oh great, stop the induction now we have to deal with this shit'
Certainly not suspicious timing. 10yrs & its right now you come forward. And after he supposedly harrassed you you stayed at the job and even followed him to another job. And even after you stopped working for him you called him...
Even his wife, "Ginni," Virginia Thomas never addressed her husband's, the most Honorable Justice of the Supreme Court, shlong as 'long' or 'John' or even 'Silver.'
Clearly, Ms. Hill had harbored lewd, lascivious and socially unacceptable fantasies that were not fulfilled.
Is this not clear to every clear thinking American--(read Tea Party acolyte)?
What does a horny judge have to do with being in the Supreme Court? are you afraid he'll get a hard-on when interpreting the Constitution in a case involving strippers?
I'm no fan of Thomas but Hill had not a speck of evidence for her claims. Case closed. All the rest is just gibberish. Any person can make up crap about someone famous that supposedly happened years ago and cause a media stir. But at the end of the day without proof its just a topic for 5 minutes of chatter on some useless show like The View or Glenn Beck.
Politics is SO B.S.! If Thomas was a Democrat nominee, Specter would be on the side of Anita Hill. And Vice Versa, Democrats would do the same to her as the republicans. That is why so many bills can't pass in the senate -- despite their own opinions, senators have to debate/vote on what their party does... I HATE POLITICS!
Arlen Specter is an asshole, Biden was a pussy rollover here, and thank God for Ted Kennedy, of all people, to stand up for her.
Mrs. Thomas has stirred up a shit storm. It was obvious that he was lying then and it's obvious now that he was lying. Impeach the bastard. It was a good ol' boys' club and he played the race card.
@Shali2707 --u r right. Biden was a wussy kiss ass, and Thomas, who achieved much of his success due to affirmative action, then became a right winger, lastly goes back and uses race card.
Misogyny at its finest. Kudos to Specter for perpetuating the "she asked for it" mentality rampant in our collective thinking about sexual violence.
Anita Hill should be a household name. All women in the United States owe her great thanks, and should strive to be as strong in conscience and effort as she was before, during, and after the hearing.
Women in the workforce owe Anita a debt of gratitude, she put up with a lot of garbage to bring this issue to America's attention, obviously, I think she's telling the truth.
Thomas has never written one important postion all these years. He is nothing but a rubber stamp for the far right. He might as well phone in his votes. Hill was the victim here, and Thomas is a pig. And a poor judge. Everyone knew that Thomas was hitting on her in a disgusting way. She didn't want to pursue this, but she felt she had to because Thomas was so awful. Specter acted like a good pit bull turned loose by the GOP. Thomas wife is in denial that her husband is a pig.
This is a disgusting line of questioning by Specter. What a piece of garbage he is. Hill had nothing to gain, and everything to lose by this.. Thomas and his uselessness on the supreme court, prove he is lacking mentally and would be capable of this. Maybe the worst judge the court has ever seen.
@harwicke You clearly have no understanding of the Court. Justice Thomas has performed very well during his time on the bench (BTW, I am a professional historian of the U.S. Supreme Court). And while Hill may have had nothing to gain, she was a dupe of the Democrats, who convinced her to put together her "story."
@talltom1973 Certainly he wins. A Supreme Court justice could sleep through trials, and he/she would STILL be on the bench. A job for life is pretty nifty.
Arlen Specter----what a guy! Strokes his own ego by claiming Hill's credibility was destroyed. She was far more credible than Thomas, even though Biden gave Thomas softball questions, unlike what Hill faced. specter wsa on the Kerner Commission that come up with a BS conclusion that there was no conspiracy to assassinate JFK (real credible). And then to show what a politician he is---he switches to Democratic party to save his seat.
@loyaldude10 Specter was counsel to the Warren Commission. The Kerner Commission was set up to investigate the race riots of 1964-67, giving rise to the words, "We are becoming two socities, one white, one black, separate and unequal."
Clarence Thomas should not be on the Supreme Court. She described, in painstaking detail how he had harassed her. At a later point a co-worker, John William Carr testified that Hill had told him what was happening in 1981. Also waiting in the wings were other women who insisted that Thomas had harrassed THEM also. There was a preponderance of information available to suggest that Clarence Thomas lied under oath when he denied harassing her. He shouldn't be a judge in ANY court.
@jbugko --there was more than a preponderance of evidence. And people forget that Hill did not come forward on her own. She told other people about her experiences w/ thomas, and some of them apparently went public or contacted the right people. IIRC, they came to Anita Hill, not other way around.
This happens all the time some1 on the GOP conjures up allegations or pretends to be a whistle-blower on the republican party b/c they have such 'high morals' & its never against the Dem. party & its always at opportune moments politically. Just look at what happened I would of bet the lives of my entire family that a book deal would follow, in fact she wrote numerous books this is her career now she appers on talk shows, writes columns blah blah blah
She is a law professor who is a former faculty member of the University of Oklahoma College of Law who waited ten years before she wrote a book. "Speaking Truth to Power" which was not widely publicized at all, you imbecile. And she is more interesting even while waiting for her nails to dry than you could ever hope to be your entire life because you are nothing but a misogynistic moron whose comments are idiotic and smell worse than wet dogsht, mikey.
Try 7 yrs regardless she still wrote a book, did 60 minutes, a # of other shows, wrote for NY Times shes obviously a media whore & w/o her accusations none of it would have happened & btw her allegations were NOT validated by the hearings they basically wrote her off as a liar. But u get points for creative insults thanks for the laugh. I actully had to look up misogyny FYI I love & respect women & absolutely dispise men who think they can abuse or harrass women sexually thats why...
...I get so pissed off women who lie about it making it harder for the ones who really were abused, I love this country & love that theres nothing a woman cant do anymore b/c of gender. And I doubt if the democrats paid her to do this but they certainly would have benifited from the fiasco if it worked but it didnt thomas got his confirmation, those kinds of stunts r nothing new if u really beleive it never happens ur a moron
@Razersun -How ironic that you have a metallica performance on your pageconsidering that there is someone in that group happens to know a friend of mine who is a female attorney - a civil rights attorney as a matter of fact. You should take a look at the entire hearing. Perhaps you already have, which would mean that YOU are what would be considered an awful excuse for a human being - to have witnessed such abuse of a woman and then to insult her. You should be ashamed.
She's a lair. If you can't see it that's your problem. My friend's brother, a law professor, had a fling with Anita Hill and she told him in confidence that she made the whole thing up under pressure from the democrats. She was well paid for the story she made up. The dems did not want another conservative on the supreme court, simple as that. The professor had pictures of him and Anita HIll which clearly showed them in a relationship, and I have no reason to doubt his story.
Wow. I love Arlen Specter, but this is not one of his high points. He "demolished" her credibility, alright. Poor Anita Hill. Judging by the sweat, its clearly not fun being run over by a United States Senator on national TV.
You know the guy at work that has an opinion on everything, has no rational thought or reasonable arguement for it, he just continues to repeat himself until everyone just gives up......that's who we have elected.....
I suppose an attorney has to be careful not to come across as the aggressor when questioning a woman and especially one of a different ethnicity. Very skillful! Awesome tone and technique in my opinion.
this is one of the lowest moments in US history. the democrats could not stand that a conservative black man was nominated to replace Justice Marshall. Shame on the democrats for stooping so low. Anita Hill probably never expected to have to testify - she was probably told that Thomas would avoid the embarassment and drop out of the nomination. When Thomas fought on, she must have been beside herself...she embarssed herself and the nation!
@scales57 what are you talking about. Regardless of the democrats unwillingness to have a pro-life conservative black man as a supreme justice, sexual harassment is a crime of discrimination and if what she said was true, he should have been punished or embarrassed publicly in some way.
@nomadicbears1234 ......see...even you have doubts about if it was true or not...a crime? really....improper conversation in the workplace is a crime? really? no, i don't think so....maybe there is some civil liability, but not a crime....
@nomadicbears1234 ...and anyway, it that what our country has reduced itself too? embarrassing people for there actions? maybe we should tar and feather him...i'm sure you are ok with that
@scales57 actually im not okay with tar and feathering someone. and actually i dont think clinton should have gotten impeached for it or anything else, i think america should have gotten its head out of its ass and looked across the ocean at the middle east so that we wouldnt have missed the terrorists who were plotting against us. so please dont shove words in my mouth, its okay to have different opinions, thats the whole point of democracy
@nomadicbears1234 ...and while i'm at it......lol....if he were a liberal, do you think that kennedy and his liberals democrat friends would have raised the issue "because it is a crime" (as you say) or to embarrass him? yeah, right.....it's politics nomad, nothing more and nothing less...and the dems in this case, made it a three ring circus, just like the republicans did to clinton with his behavior...meanwhile, the radical islamic groups were plotting against us....should i go on and on? lol
to this day Spector has a hard time treating women with respect. He is one of the bed wetters club of old men as still see things as a mans world and women as inferior to men. especially in the world of politics..
Also, that part where Joe Biden interrupted Specter......what Specter was doing was questioning Hill about specific statements contained in the FBI report. Hill, up to that point, had not seen that report and didn't know what all was in it. It is the questioning about that report, before Hill saw it, that shows she was clearly lieing. In other words, when she had to answer difficult questions, without the benefit of being prepared by her lawyers, she couldn't give a straight answer.
I lived in DC at the time and I remember watching this live on C-SPAN. I thought Specter and other Republicans absolutely destroyed her. There was no question whatsoever that she was lieing about the whole sexual harassment charge, no doubt all. Of course, the news media had a field day with the liberals championing her and the conservatives damning her. But remember, on the facts, not a single allegation she ever made, in any remote sense, come close to being proven.
Keep in mind, Arlen Specter was an on the fence Republican at the time, and he even voted against Justice Bork. He was impartial to both sides and he looked over the evidence fairly carefully. In the end, he did get the impression Anita Hill was lying. Even as a Democrat today, he still believes that Hill lied. Keep in mind however, this was a he said she said case, and we never will know who was telling the truth.
Clarence Thomas is a sexual harrasser for sure. Arlen Spector was engaged in a hatchet job. What possible motive would she have for lying about Thomas? A "lynching"? Yes- of Anita Hill, not the sanctimonious poster child for affirmative action who denies it to anyone else.
What possible motive would she have? I'm sure Robert Bork would explain it to you. And it was a lynching. So nice to see bullshit tactics thrown back in the Dems faces!

@mikedd56 Secondly, John Doggett, a friend of Thomas and acquaintance of Hill, said that Hill had
fantasised about Doggett’s romantic interest in her: “It was my opinion at that time, and

indication of the fact that she was having a problem with being rejected by men she was

...one is hard to swallow.
How many times do I...
mikedd56 3 months ago
@mikedd56 Thomas had never once face his charge. He instead derided "the attack from the left". The charge was thus never resolved. His strategy, while protect his chance of being appointed as Supreme Court Justice, left a permanent scar on the prestige of justice itself - his own credibility was never restored by legal process. And the Supreme Court, instead of the main pillar of justice, became the joke of the nation. If he is innocent, why not resolve the charge in court?
hereiam2005 3 months ago
@hereiam2005
...need to say it she isnt in trouble, shes like a witness. Its called suspicious, so boo hoo they questioned her story.

mikedd56 3 months ago
@mikedd56 Again you call me left wing. This is not a matter of left or right, this is a matter of Justice and due process. This is the matter of sexual harassment being a serious charge and a violation of law or not. She was not protected by a lawyer, she, the accuser, was treated as the accused. She is not merely reporting crime, she is reporting a crime while being the victim. The simple due process of law requires that.
hereiam2005 3 months ago
@hereiam2005
...so concerned w/ due process & all wouldnt Thomas be innocent until proven guilty in court, yet your sure Hill is the victim. Actually it amazes how so many assume Thomas is guilty & how so few even bother to get the details. Like I said all she really accused him of was being a creep & I've seen tons of comments w/ stuff like they hope Thomas dies from cancer & suffers horribly from it. I guess they think he raped her I mean WTF
mikedd56 3 months ago
@mikedd56 You also guilty of jumping to conclusion yourself, so don't blame me. I was merely point out her reason of going public ~if~ the charge was indeed true. That huge ~if~ can only resolve in a court of justice with all due process. You do not understand how the legal system works and due process, and I understand. Its OK. You don't understand the seriousness of the charge, its also OK. But it is absolute unacceptable for a Supreme Court Justice - the symbol of Justice.
hereiam2005 3 months ago
@mikedd56 I mentioned Clinton simply to quote his ideas on governing. Don't confuse the sex and the charges. Read the book. And then we can have a serious discussion. I have read The Conscience of a Conservative. And although I don't agree with some of the point, some makes senses. We all disagree at some points - just don't defend your ideal at all cost. Even at the cost of our conscience - or justice.

@mikedd56 One of the most gentlemen - with the best manner I know happened to be a black person - he is French though. Barack Obama is black. And he is one of the most intelligent person I know. @mikedd56 I have absolutely no problem with being black - sometimes being minority even make them to be more inclined toward understanding the point of others. - the thing I have problem with is modern conservatism. The viciousness of modern conservatism to achieve its goal is unprecedented - such as in this fine display of male power.
hereiam2005 3 months ago
@mikedd56 The amount of hate speech and character assassination, where you care more about naming individuals with colorful names than having civilized discussion on policies, find out what work and what doesn't, is revolting. If you can name one individual that can repulse all or more than half the ideas put forth in the book "Back To Work" written by Bill Clinton, I am willing to have a serious civilized discussion. And leave the name calling out of this. I am older than a 10 years old kid.

Clearly, Ms. Hill had harbored lewd, lascivious and socially unacceptable fantasies that were not fulfilled.

2taggs2 1 year ago
Arlen Specter is an asshole, Biden was a pussy rollover here, and thank God for Ted Kennedy, of all people, to stand up for her.
Mrs. Thomas has stirred up a shit storm. It was obvious that he was lying then and it's obvious now that he was lying. Impeach the bastard. It was a good ol' boys' club and he played the race card.

Maybe the worst judge the court has ever seen.
harwicke 1 year ago
@harwicke You clearly have no understanding of the Court. Justice Thomas has performed very well during his time on the bench (BTW, I am a professional historian of the U.S. Supreme Court). He shouldn't be a judge in ANY court.
jbugko 1 year ago
@jbugko --there was more than a preponderance of evidence. And people forget that Hill did not come forward on her own. She told other people about her experiences w/ thomas, and some of them apparently went public or contacted the right people. IIRC, they came to Anita Hill, not other way around.

The professor had pictures of him and Anita HIll which clearly showed them in a relationship, and I have no reason to doubt his story.

this is one of the lowest moments in US history. the democrats could not stand that a conservative black man was nominated to replace Justice Marshall. Shame on the democrats for stooping so low. Anita Hill probably never expected to have to testify - she was probably told that Thomas would avoid the embarassment and drop out of the nomination. When Thomas fought on, she must have been beside herself...she embarssed herself and the nation!
scales57 2 years ago
@scales57 what are you talking about. Regardless of the democrats unwillingness to have a pro-life conservative black man as a supreme justice, sexual harassment is a crime of discrimination and if what she said was true, he should have been punished or embarrassed publicly in some way.

In other words, when she had to answer difficult questions, without the benefit of being prepared by her lawyers, she couldn't give a straight answer.
rwalden2007 2 years ago
I lived in DC at the time and I remember watching this live on C-SPAN. I thought Specter and other Republicans absolutely destroyed her. There was no question whatsoever that she was lieing about the whole sexual harassment charge, no doubt all. Of course, the news media had a field day with the liberals championing her and the conservatives damning her. But remember, on the facts, not a single allegation she ever made, in any remote sense, come close to being proven.
rwalden2007 2 years ago
Keep in mind, Arlen Specter was an on the fence Republican at the time, and he even voted against Justice Bork. He was impartial to both sides and he looked over the evidence fairly carefully. In the end, he did get the impression Anita Hill was lying. Even as a Democrat today, he still believes that Hill lied. Keep in mind however, this was a he said she said case, and we never will know who was telling the truth.
