We can all speculate as to what the band may or may not have smoked before the concert but I think that, even by '65, they wouldn't have done Shea Stadium baked. It was the biggest concert of their life and they all talked later about how horribly daunting it was. Lennon has a lot of form in monkeying about when he's nervous. I think that's the simple answer. The experience of Shea also persuaded them to give up touring, so it can't have been that much fun, however it looked.

i always thoguht the story went that they lost power to the monitors which meant they couldnt hear nothing but the crowd. which they say was deafening. there was alot of edit work just to get the crowd noise down enough to hear them. but anyways a amazing job to play this good without being able to hear themselves. and yeah they probably were high too.

They could have smoked a joint before the show, I don't know, I'm just pointing out that there is a lot of variables here. The four of them seem pretty normal up until this point in the show. Laughing and having a good time does not always mean they're stoned, even if it's The Beatles.

This is just sheer fucking talent and balls out rock n roll.... the Beatles are jamming without on stage monitors, they have nothing to hear themselves with but their on stage guitar amps (which isn't much, especially in 1965 with the 100 watt amps they had), the constant crowd of 60,000+ screaming like a jet aircraft at full throttle without stopping for the whole show, and yet they were still very much in tune and on time. I challenge ANY band today to do this! ANY!

If you ever get the chance to play on a vintage 60's Vox Continental organ, they are fun to play on! They sound like that in the video and the keys are reversed color (black with white sharps) It truly was the keyboard of the day, all the bands had one or wanted one!
