Although I'm no expert, but no matter how you look at it, oil which could only be converted into energy through combustion cannot possibly be sustainable. Reducing CO2 emissions does not make it sustainable. It's like saying we're not harming the environment as much as we would before, therefore we're helping to restore it. No! you're merely damaging it slower, which doesn't solve the problem at all.

My car runs on oil from the middle east but I wish it didn't. The tar sands are for export mostly to the United States and China. Altogether I think you are missing the point of why the tar sands are unsustainable and a really poorly thought out direction for humanity as a whole.

@justanoldman1 The big picture is that fossil fuels are destroying our environment and these tar sands expediate that process. Whether the fuel comes from Saudi or here it is still dangerous and contaminate our ground water, heat up the earth and demands dependancy. Alternative energy is the inevitable future.

@Xwowplaya You have fallen prey to the global warming scam. CO2 is not a polutant, it is needed by plants to grow. Millions of years ago the CO2 levels were much, much higher than what we have now and the earth was covered by rich greenery and very large animals. We have gone through many warming and cooling period and nothing we as human can do the change that. Man made global warming is a scam, now water and air polution is real and we should do something about that.

@justanoldman1 It amazes me that big oil has corrupted so many minds into believing that anthropologic climate change is a hoax. We know its real; in the 70's we eradicated acid rain by implementing regulations on SO2 emissions. Decades later people now think that CO2 isn't a greenhouse gas, next you'll tell me fossil fuel emissions don't contain CO2.

Look up the temperature of Venus and the constituents of its' atmosphere to see what CO2 does with trapped thermal energy.

@justanoldman1 You make so many good points but fail to understand fossil fuels. You obviously don't want your water polluted by waste in urban areas yet you fail to regard the fact that the tar sands use 6 litres of oil for every 1 litre of oil produced.

The molecular geometry of CO2 allows radiation past it, but it absorbs thermal energy thus "trapping it in our atmosphere. I did an experiment in grade 11 to prove it. Coupled with massive deforestation I wonder what will soak up the extra?

@Xwowplaya They are recycling the water now so they use very little compared to the past. Our current levels of CO2 are at 285 PPM and during the jurasic period they were over 3000 PPM. Volcanic activity has a lot to do with the levels. I am not worried about CO2 it is a natural eliment in the atmosphere whereas there are lots of other polution you could be worried about. In the mean time, Canada needs the tar sands to be independent of the middle east and thier blood oil.

@justanoldman1 CO2 emissions are putting millions of lives in danger. As the earth warms, the icecaps are melting, raising sea levels and changing weather patterns. Evidence of this is apparent with droughts and floods in Australia, larger hurricanes in the atlantic and countries fighting over the newly thawed arctic. The past saw larger levels of CO2 but was that world suitable for mammals that need considerably larger amounts of O2 for cellular respiration?. Our behaviour is affecting climate.

There have been several iceages and of course heating in between and I persume the same will continue to happen. The electric car has already been patented but rebuked from the market by GM who confiscated over 5000 of the cars from the road in 2001. alternatives can be implemented but big oil is lobbying to extinguish them, solar cells on the white house have been removed even though they were already working! When our children write there history books, I wonder who they will speak favourably of?

@Xwowplaya The government of Ontario is paying 80 cents per KW for solar energy and selling it to us at 6 cents. Wind power is almost as bad, they pay 42 cents and again sell it to us at 6.

The green energy is not working, it is just too expensive and not reliable, we still need full backup for when the sun does not shine and the wind does not blow. If you have the back up why waste the money on these more expensive sourses?

We still need the oil and lets make it Canadian oil.

@justanoldman1 Where do these numbers come from? Your ass? The only costs associated with wind and solar is the capitol investment. It is impossible to know the cost/Kwh unless you know the lifespan of the infrastructure which could last 50 years or more, so where do those numbers come from and how is the capitol put into coal not the same? With a large enough grid, there is always wind or sun energy to be captured. Not to mention the power of conservation.

@Xwowplaya Where do you live, on mars? Most western countries have tried solar energy and have given up on it as it is just too expensive and unreliable as well.

The figures I quoted are from Ontario Hydo One, llok it up for yourself. The Ontario Government passed what they call the green energy act and spent $7 billion dollars of solar panel and said it would creat 20,000 jobs. So far it has generated 300 jobs, that means if job is worth about 2.5 million dollars.

Government waste is everywhere, if we dismissed what political assholes do with our money, we wouldn't have a country at all. ie.$1 billion on G20 summit which was 2 days long! Then you can look up their hydro rates, looking at my bill, non peak rate is 5.9 cents per kWh. The green energy act allows Hydro One to pay 80 cents for solar and 42 cents for wind powered energy. This is a liberal government that just does not know how to save money, they just increase taxes all the time.

@justanoldman1 I have read the list of prices consumers pay but not the 80 and 42 cents you said. If that is legal for ontario, it doesn't mean that Is what the energy is being produced at. Once again, when the infrastructure is in place there are no additional costs besides maintenance, we do not have to buy fuel also. FYI the national debt has double under Harper, not entirely his fault but the right wing economic policies is what brought the states to their knees, now he's doing the same.

Our government unionized workers earn about 1/3 more that anyone in private industry and they have pensions that no one in the private sector can even come close to.

Our health care is in it's death grip because of unions taking all the money and not giving service in return. The hospitals are dirty and unkept and the cleaner sleep in the lockers.

I am not naive enough to think that countries like Iraq or Iran will ever pose serious threats to world peace. To think that Canada had a large military just waiting to go fight Germany is absurd.
