What difference does it make? I've seen guys shift both ways. Is there a specific reason why you should shift first, then split as opposed to the other way around?

simply think of a six speed but once ur ready to go to 7 u move the shifter to first and hit the splitter

Depends on the maker.

Fuller/Eaton has the Roadranger, THE one (a handful of models). This is a five speed with four speeds regurarly used for normal driving and then a hi range change and then the same position over (like a nine speed or without the first, LOW, one, an eight speed) then an OVERDRIVE split in ALL of those normal "holes", ergo, 4 plus 4 plus 4 imn overdrivbe plus that low, equal 8 x 5 = 13!

Spicer (in an old 1974 manual, pardon the pun, I found at LA"s Richard Riordan Library), had a model with four holes, three and range chane and spliiter in BOTH, plus (sound familiar?!) a extreme low in first.
