i don't quite understand... when do u switch the strings? at what knot? it's just confusing... i read somewhere that when you do a forward-forward knot or a backward-backward knot you must end up with the strings switched... so it u have.. let's say a red string on the right and a white one on the left shouldn't u end up with the red one to the left and the white one on the right? please explain :)

btw... i'm quite aware of the term hitch (half knot) so you can use that in the explanation ;)

you need craft thread. its thicker than sewing thread but thinner than knitting thread.

you can buy this at walmart or michaels. sometimes its called embroidery floss.

Oh, I see what you mean now. Ok, so, you would make a forward knot with whatever the string is, and then make a backward knot with that same string. So for example, using the colors I used for the forward/backward knot. You would make a forward knot with the red string, and then make a backward knot with that same red string.

Yes, you have to make double knots for any kind of friendship bracelet unless specified.

You can either go from left to right and tie a forward knot on each strand using the leftmost strand which will result in a bracelet like the Candy Stripe or you can tie forward knots with one strand at a time and switch at any time you want to create different colored swirls and that will result in a bracelet like the Chinese Staircase.
