"not real durable" is not my first choice of qualities for an off-road vehicle to have. :D it is the impression i've always gotten from Nissan vehicles, though - they've always seemed to me to be built out of very flimsy materials, which is why i've never even considered owning one. big tires and a winch bumper on a Nissan just looks to me like lipstick on a pig. it's nice the Xterra is as capable as it is, but choosing one for off-roading seems to me like choosing a VW bug for drag racing.
Guys, you really scare me with broken diffs. I want to buy an X-Offroad now I have big doubts. I'm not going to abuse or jump with the truck, just backroads, steep places and some mud. Still can break with no abuse?
Thanks! The X is great on and off road, Front and rear diffs are weak links. If you jump one and hit the ground with wrong wheel RPM the front diff will explode. Also the IRS will not stand up to abuse. You really need solid front/rear axles for jumping and bashing around. THe X crawls rocks fine, but you must be very careful and smooth onthe gas to avoid diff problems. Since the video, the front diff broke - covered under extended warrenty, but be careful. The X is great but not real durable.
Hey fellas please don't troll or get over protective. I really love the xterra but alot of forums say they break down all the time during off road, how ever minor it is. Is this true? I am seriously considering buying an xterra for my first car so you can imagin i'll be doin some jumps off hills and curb stomping to steal the parking at the next isle.. Is this suv the best choice for me considering my type of abuse and small wallet? please msg me some solid facts or a list love xterra tho
@strapinhotpockets any vehicle you abuse will break, regardless of make. if you jump this car, i would be surprised if it didn't break... if your wanting to abuse something get a beater.
Nice vid; garbled talk on the soundtrack. I have an 'o8 with 185's General ATII grabbers and 2" lift by LevelLift; have 11 1/2" min clear. I Made the full component of skid plates from the pics myself. I don't have the rear locker but was AMAZED where my X would go, competing favorably at Moab on the difficult rated trails w/ a the Jeep Rubicon. I never found anything we couldn't do. I welded in a front receiver onto my existing front bumper cross brace; made new bumper w/ receiver for rear.
It's an auto, which may help. Be careful leeting the clutch out too quickly on steep, rocky climbs. The shock to the front diff may contribute to a failure.. BTW, Nissan replaced the entire rearend assy at no charge, even with the lift, winch and other accessories already installed.
It's been several years since I used it, but I think it's located behind a panel behind the right rear fender well accessed from the inside . Not a great jack. If you are going off road, invest in a Hi-Lift jack.
Hi have a question bout the calmini 2 inch lift. Is it difficult to install and can it be done at home, I just want to install the spacer in the front and the brackets for the rear leafs.

The weak diffs were fixed in 2007 so if you buy a 2008 - present you will be fine...

Was it still under warranty when you lifted it? I want to lift my 09 X but I do not want to mess up warranty

@norcalsav
Yes and both diffs have been replaced after the lift under warrenty. I do have the extended drive train coverage.

@strapinhotpockets find yourself a good used Jeep Wrangler (TJ or later). tough as nails and absolute billy goats off-road.

Have you broken any front differentials on this rig?
w3855 2 years ago
No! Had a rear diff spider gear break - Nissan replaced the entire rear axle assembly.
backcountrydriver 2 years ago
That's encouraging. I just bought an 06 manual trans 4x4 xterra. I've read a lot of horror stories about broken front differentials.
Your X a manual or auto?

Where is the jack located in the xterra? I just got one and i cant find the jack for the life of me.

isn't it under the rear seats? flip the seats up and its under the carpet
cowtrippin10 1 year ago
@backcountrydriver I have a 2008. The jack and tire tools are under the rears seat cusion about in the center, and under a velcro-secured cloth flap.
roynash 1 year ago
under the back seats. Have to flip them down to see the little cubby hole for the jack.

It's not too hard to install if you have the right tools like a coil spring compressor. Follow the instructions and give yourself a few hours.
