What I love best in bassoon high range is the little "click" sounds you get when changing ranges... I can't describe it in fancy terms but I hope other people hear what I hear.
bavo! i only wish i could one day play with musicians of this skill. you can tell good musicians by the way they look when they play and these guys got it!!!
Gustavo rocks. This is just beautiful. The Rite of Spring is still the greatest piece of 20th century music ever written. You will find pieces of it stolen and put into all kinds of film music, TV music, et. al. I used to listen to a recording Michael Tilson Thomas made with the New York Phil every night for a year.
To add on, he has a truly enviable level of control over his instrument. He is able to taper the high notes so flawlessly and effortlessly. Such control is of the highest level indeed. It's as if he has all the technique locked in his mind, and he just goes upstage to let loose his talents and musicality.
I hope I will reach his level one day! Truly amazing. Can't help listening to it over and over again.
@eduardocalzada: somehow, the bell (the top of the instrument does NOT look like that of a Heckel German-style bassoon. Rather, it looks like a French-style instrument à la Buffet-Crampon (and this from a non-bassoonist who however has seen pictures of these instruments!).
Corrections would be welcome. Otherwise, I marvel at ALL the orchestral sound so far heard (notably the sopranino-trumpet and the English-horn- really-musically played both!!!). Where is the video of the whole concert?
An amazing interpretation... Nunez truly is one of the best bassoonists in the world today. Of course, we cannot forget the amazing orchestra accompanying him!
I might have commented before-but I'll do it again: this is just about the best it can be when it comes to the Rite of Spring bassoon opening line. Gustavo is el hombre! he is THE MAN!
Thank you for posting this! I heard Chailly and the CGO with Sacre on radio when I was young, and til now it's my favorite version of the piece... where can i get the full video or cd??

very very beautiful playing. only thing is that Stravinski was quoted as having said shortly before his death that if he knew that high school kids would be playing this and that it would be played so beautifully, he would have composed it up at least another 3rd. where do you go with that? again, beautiful playing.

wow it's such a tender sound, i can't believe Saint-Saens walked at the premiere out saying it's a "misuse of the bassoon".

@CatFlashBlue Bassoon in the high range requires heavy use of the thumbs, so the notes sometimes lag a little.

You can feel him connect with the music from the first note. That's what makes a great musician. Simply stunning!
