They use the most accepted (or sometimes easiest) sign. They have a list of ASL consultants in the credits of every show.

Oh, thanks. Most of my ASL vocabulary comes from New York or Arizona, I picked up "lost" from the New York dialect.

Actually the sign for LOST that you are describing means you LOST at sports. Not winning is not the same concept as losing an item. :)
