@TheGreaterGood80 No it shouldn't. We're a republic, the UK, Canadians, and Australians are a democracy. A Republic has more even representation and a Democracy is majority rule.
I'd love to have question time every year. Last year when Obama spoke to the house republicans I was hopeful for more of them. It was really good to see them interact that way.
If US Politics were Parliamentary as it is in the UK, I can imagine every Black rapper becoming politician. Every debate would be a rap battle... And it would be one of the most entertaining things to watch on Television...
If our President had all of the power, then we would be no different than any other government. We fought for independence so we wouldn`t have to deal with a Tyrant. Like Mel Gibson said in the Patriot, "Why would I want to stop 1 tyrant 3000 miles away, compared to three thousand tyrants one mile away?"
I think a mix of both for both countries would be good. Televised debates for Britain, and a more Parliamentary approach for America, concerning the PMQs. Although, I doubt any of our (America's) politicians could keep up with people like David Cameron or Ed Miliband. However, it will obviously never happen.
British politic use the parliementary system(like here in Canada), so the prime minister and his ministers have to face the opposition. It's what we called ''Ministerial responsability''. In the USA Presidential system, the president and his Secretaries doesn't have to defend themselve at the congress BUT, U.S. president and his secretaries have less power in their own contry, than the British PM or any other PM that are far more powerfull in their contry.
@hop208 you kidding??? someone is going to bring a gun and start shooting the place...believe me some politicians are only smooth talkers, but dont actually have a degree in science, mathematics, world news ect politics is all they know and probably only got elected because of the people they know
so put a man on the spot like this and he will be desperate LOL
UK Prime Minister David Cameron’s forebears have a long history in financial racketeering. He was the director of the Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China. - PLEASE Watch these videos - Lyndon LaRouche explains start of WW III . or - The Obama Deception. here on youtube. As an American, I would love to see "question time" over here. We shouldn't need it, but since the media refuses to do their job and question the current administration, it would be nice to actually see The Chosen One have to answer some tough questions.
As an American, I watch my TV's channel of CSPAN (House and Senate broadcasted debate channel) every once in a while. It actually isn't that exciting in America though, because they don't say "yeah" to every point. I suggest they offer it though, due to giving people an option to view.
Live tv debates are rubbish. All the audience does is sit there like a robot and stare and tv debates replaced morning journalist questions. Of course a debate would suit Cameron. He does good on tv but if hes faced with a canon of questions by political journalist he shrinks.
I think there should be 1 or 2 live Debates only during the election. BTW i love how David Cameron thinks that this is to boring for the public to watch well..... DAVID 21,868 (current view count ) PEOPLE IS A LOT OF PEOPLE!!!!
i watch it but i think that it is terrible. even in america when they have live debates on tv the people are all lying and not even answering the questions. all they do it talk bad about the other person or people they are debating. All the promises they give are lies and they have no intention of carrying them out. They are just saying those things to get into office. So even if the U.K. had live debates it would be the same thing and all the stupid people would vote them
LOL Little does Cameron here know, he's actually about to shoot himself in the foot. Without the TV debates he'd be sitting in government right now with a Tory landslide.
Well, this sort of debate in Congress could certainly be interesting. Ever try watching C-SPAN? Even one interested in politics is bored to the point of contemplating drinking paint thinner. There SHOULD be passionate people in Congress debating, shouting, exchanging witticisms- politics and patriotism are very personal. As long as it doesn't degenerate into "reality TV" and pre-teen melodrama, it could actually get people more interested in politics, maybe even vote more wisely.
I think they should have debates live in every country. America gets it right on debate. Have it out on t.v.
A lot of stuff can come out of the live debates. 2 debates per week and various styles from open talks to exacting questions. People want the policy condensed and in 1 hr not rambling on and on days after days
all that will ensure is lowering university standards, giving more of our jobs away for immigrants and taxing of the rich that will mean they can employ less people.

Either I'm reading your comment wrong or you completely misunderstood me. I live in the US like you (or at least what your profile says) and I want the United States Congress to have debates the way they do in Parliament in the UK.
Because it's an actual debate and not people using shallow talking points the way our politicians do. Plus when someone is publically proven wrong or even humiliated, they can't get away with using the same uncorect talking points over and over again. Although considering how over inflated the egos are of our politicians and how deserving of respect they think they're owed, I doubt it would be very long before this sort of exhange came to blows.
@jazzx251 as I just said, the president isn't part of the legislature as is the case there. It is not a parliamentary system. The founding fathers wanted a different system of government. We do not vote for parties in the US.
@nothingtoobig: The problem is that after generations of formal discussions, would the American politicans really have the ability to shout at each other willy-nilly? I know they have the raw potential for that but it's just would they really be able to let it out like this in public? Kind of the opposite of our British, we're rather reserved but in debates like this we just erupt in a loud debate like this.
@nothingtoobig American's should have British style address's to the government......British should have there Prime Minister's should have American style presidential debate's........Not like any of it matter's because the same bank's that control the American government are the same bank's that control the British government
@nothingtoobig first of all the President of the United States has bigger things to do then receive questions from 1 average joe..that's why we Vote for our local representative, he goes to Washington, and he votes on our behalf
Brittan should televise their candidate debates in front of people, but with the audience more free and vocal, which they stopped doing here. I'd love it if America started debating like they do in the House of Commons! The problem with Washington is that there's too much monologues and not enough dialouge!
The Conservatives won the 1992 election because they kicked out Thatcher, Labour are going to loose the 2010 election because they're too weak to kick out Brown.
@NewLabour1 Throwing Brown out would make the party look unstable and would cause deep rifts and divide. The only thing that the party could do to have any chance at the next election was to keep Brown in or face certain defeat
@NewLabour1 Why vote for people who throw money at people who refuse to work, and then make the people who pay the taxes for the benefits pay for even more wasted government expenditure
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
6th Jan 2010
PMQs ended with Cameron embarrassed and at times face in his hands.
All his points back fired and he achieved nothing via damaging Labour. It actually ended with damaging Conservative front bencher's showing his Leadership is a joke.
I think 6th Jan 2010 will be remembered as the day when, during the continuing civil war inside the PLP, the Labour rebels once again tried and failed to remove their own Prime Minister.
@NewLabour1 Don't trust a tory? That's pretty rich coming from you. Lying to go to war, cash for honours, open border immigration purely for the political purpose of 'rubbing the right's nose in diversity' (look it up if you don't believe me), distorted treasury figures, the abolition of the 10p tax, selling gold reserves on the cheap, constant spin, and yet after all that you still vote labour. You're a fucking idiot. I didn't bother voting this year, too disheartened with british politics.
I think I see why the Brown is so unpopular in the UK, he's a coward. He changes the subject every time a unique or difficult question is put forth, and simply makes a half ass attack on Cameron, who comes off as aggressive, fresh, and more importantly bold. As for the issue of American Style Television debates in Britain, I can see the demand, but I think it will continue to reinforce the idea, that the British Monarchy is outdated and should be abolished.
What do we put in place then? We have unique traditions that date back centuries. They may not be that great, but if we lose them, what do we fill the gap with? It's like cutting down an ancient Yew tree and replacing it with a little sapling.
If i did a TV programme on the BBC it would be called Rogue MP's and i think it is a very good idea that Sky News are doing a Leaders Debate live on television and i'm a Conservative voter i will say Gordon Brown Get Out of no 10 and David Cameron should be the next prime minister in 2010
One of the things I love about American politics is the debates. But I think America needs to adopt a form of Prime Minister's Questions. I agree with DigitalPrace7, the Brits do keep it real! :-)
PMQs are far, far superior to the American style debates.
The outright lies that political parties in the US get away with telling are disgusting. You do not get away with lies in PMQs, you will be called out.
The country is already a democracy (has been for over 300 years). The question is whether to have party leaders debating each other, on an equal footing, outside the crucible of Parliament.
We do have democracy, the problem is it does not represent the people very well, in the last GE the Labour party won on 36% of the vote but somehow managed to get over 60% of the seats, it desperatly needs reforming, FPTP system worked fine until voting was allowed by everyone. We need preportional representation in the HoC, if you get 36% of the vote you should get 36% of the seats.
Come on now. All of that bullshit you guys make up, like public option healthcare being a secret plan to kill off grandma would be brought out to light, and you would be humiliated in front of the country. You couldn't have some governer that resigned under scandal(Palin) or Speaker of the House who resigned under scandal (Gingrich) making snipes on their blog pages, totally lying, without having to defend it.
In Congress theres limited time to talk with no open challenges of debate. No heat in that Kitchen. George Galloway is a piece of garbage but he's House of Parliament trained and I saw what he did to that congressional hearing. Shredded it.
um, america has a congress too! there are three branches of government! The executive branch (presidents) get the most attention because it is lead by one person and his cabinet and he represents the head of state.
This isnt a congress in the same sence as america's. Each person in tha room has been voted as a representative of a constiuency withing the UK (England, Wales, Scotland or N.I). Our head of state in the monarch (King or Queen) although, they do not have asmuch poer as the used to. Its the PM and the biggest party in the house which has the power.
you're right. although there are similarities in both governments, accusing the PM of a lie or openly debating with him/her doesn't necessarily justify what Rep. Joe Wilson did to Obama. The difference is that the PM in Britain isn't the head of state, unlike the President of the U.S. who IS the head of state. Calling out the President is supposed to be like calling out the Queen, so to speak. And I'm pretty sure that would be more frowned upon. I wish the U.S. was more lively like this though.
Although I would like to see better debates here in the US, where political leaders would have to account for their lies, the problem with Joe Wilson yelling 'liar' was really decorum. Obama was addressing a joint session of congress, on national television, which is usually followed by opposition response also on tv.
Nooo! Live television debates would be terrible. The American onces do not ask the questions that need asking - they seem useless to me, and seem to much of fame.
I love how it is now. Teenagers, waiting for their right to vote enjoy these 'exchanges' at the moment. Much more entertaining.
Why can't Britain have both? People seem to think by adopting American style debates we will have to get rid of the pmq. FYI the two don't cancel each other out.
Lord no. Please please please don't adopt our style of debates. While I can understand why the relatively more telegenic and verbally nimble-footed Cameron would appreciate just another chance to pummel Brown, our presidential debates were highly processed, bland products for television. PMQs are for all purposes better: more entertaining and lively evidence of a strong parliamentary democracy at work (if at times slightly vitriolic)
Piers Morgon himself is always spouting: "You guys", "cool", and "no way baby"! This is from the most reprehensible camera whore asshole Britain contains! I mean... he's not only embarrassing his own children but us the British public just because he wants to succeed in America by trying to be cool like an old embarrassing dad! He knows jack**** about talent on BGT and should just move to America and be ripped apart there when the U.S. finally realizes what a c**t he is!!! We don't want him!
wow British politics are awesome. If they had that in America it would be on Spike tv and Hollywood would end up putting a boxing ring around it and making it a reality show.
I think he has a good idea...Doing Live Tv debate you see what your Party guy is all about..Stuff come out only in Live Debate.Even though there is corruption no matter what style of debate you have. Both country need to MIx their debates styles into eachother. I thnk that would be great. Combine america style debates and Britain style and i think it would Be sweet. Cause i would love too see Rep too kick Obama ass in question..Cause he could not take it week after week of question from theright
YOU CAN KEEP PMQs !!!!! WHY DOES EVERYONE THINK ITS ONE OR THE OTHER???!!! THE DEBATES WOULD BE DURING ELECTION CAMPAIGNS AND THE PMQs WOULD BE WHEN PARLIAMENT IS IN SESSION!
Just like Tony Blair was, you mean? Blair was supposedly accountable to the rest of the house but oddly nobody made a move on him even though the people wanted his guts for garters.
We really dont have to see a telivised debate, primarily because we get to see them debate every day on BBC Parliament, and its just not worth watching :p
Canada has both! We have Question Period EVERY day, and during elections we have at least 1 debate in French and 1 debate in English. It makes the party positions so much more clear and makes our system so much more transparent.
we have BOTH! We have question period every day of the week, and during the election campaigns we have debates between the leaders of the main parties!! You don't need either / or you can have BOTH!
Our parliamentary system has served Britain, and therest of he world very well, we should be pround of our indivitualsism, and embrace what remains of our tattered british culture and not further destroy it in Americanisation of everything our forefathers worked hard to create, our system is one of the best in theworld, i'd hrdly say the American system comes even close to what we have achieved
it wont, however i wish each house of our congress would all sit together and debate like this, there's not much of a debate when you have the speaker at a podium and they're speaking to a near empty house.
Why only leaders of three parties? They have their time during PMQs. Actually such debates would be worthwhile if leaders of parties that aren't repre
What an unbelievable lack of civility and decorum.
No wonder their ancestors used to draw and quarter criminals and innocents alike.

We should. Cameron is right - why can't Gordon Brown answer a straight question?
I also think that we should have party leadership election televised debates.
And perhaps (but this is only a suggestion), we should have a slightly reformed electoral system:
Each major party (Lab, Con, LibDem) visits each county each week and publiclydebates in town halls, etc.

Then an opponent gets to ask a tough question.
Then a friendly.
Then an opponent.

@jazzx251 as I just said, the president isn't part of the legislature as is the case there. It is not a parliamentary system. The founding fathers wanted a different system of government. We do not vote for parties in the US.
histre101 1 year ago
@nothingtoobig the president is not part of the legislature as the pm is in the UK.
histre101 1 year ago
@nothingtoobig yes you do....they're called elections. If you do not agree with his policies, don't vote for him/her.
histre101 1 year ago
@nothingtoobig: The problem is that after generations of formal discussions, would the American politicans really have the ability to shout at each other willy-nilly? I know they have the raw potential for that but it's just would they really be able to let it out like this in public? Kind of the opposite of our British, we're rather reserved but in debates like this we just erupt in a loud debate like this.
kanenkitten 1 year ago
@nothingtoobig the president in the US system of government is not a legislator as the pm is.

@nothingtoobig American's should have British style address's to the government......British should have there Prime Minister's should have American style presidential debate's........Not like any of it matter's because the same bank's that control the American government are the same bank's that control the British government

Brittan should televise their candidate debates in front of people, but with the audience more free and vocal, which they stopped doing here. I'd love it if America started debating like they do in the House of Commons! The problem with Washington is that there's too much monologues and not enough dialouge!

All his points back fired and he achieved nothing via damaging Labour. It actually ended with damaging Conservative front bencher's showing his Leadership is a joke.

FIGHT CRIME with LABOUR! Just shoo the horrible ratboys and burglars away, whilst punishing the retaliating victims for their brutality!
Liberal-Leftists tend to excuse high crime on the grounds of economic recession. Even during the boom years.
If I ruled the world, the criminals could be tended to by the liberals all they want. Indeed, I'd have them sharing
the prison cells for all the damage they've done to the nation!

YNot1989 2 years ago
What do we put in place then? We have unique traditions that date back centuries. They may not be that great, but if we lose them, what do we fill the gap with? It's like cutting down an ancient Yew tree and replacing it with a little sapling.

We do have democracy, the problem is it does not represent the people very well, in the last GE the Labour party won on 36% of the vote but somehow managed to get over 60% of the seats, it desperatly needs reforming, FPTP system worked fine until voting was allowed by everyone. We need preportional representation in the HoC, if you get 36% of the vote you should get 36% of the seats.

beevers48 2 years ago
um, america has a congress too! there are three branches of government! The executive branch (presidents) get the most attention because it is lead by one person and his cabinet and he represents the head of state.
robnum1 2 years ago
This isnt a congress in the same sence as america's. Each person in tha room has been voted as a representative of a constiuency withing the UK (England, Wales, Scotland or N.I). Our head of state in the monarch (King or Queen) although, they do not have asmuch poer as the used to. Its the PM and the biggest party in the house which has the power.
Erech01 2 years ago
sovreignty lies with the pm, some think hes too powerful
spincrib 2 years ago
Soverignty lies with the queen. The PM has seemed to have assumed a lot of that soverignty though
cook119 2 years ago
you're right. although there are similarities in both governments, accusing the PM of a lie or openly debating with him/her doesn't necessarily justify what Rep. Joe Wilson did to Obama. The difference is that the PM in Britain isn't the head of state, unlike the President of the U.S. who IS the head of state. Calling out the President is supposed to be like calling out the Queen, so to speak. And I'm pretty sure that would be more frowned upon. I wish the U.S. was more lively like this though.
arawatbituin 2 years ago
Although I would like to see better debates here in the US, where political leaders would have to account for their lies, the problem with Joe Wilson yelling 'liar' was really decorum. Obama was addressing a joint session of congress, on national television, which is usually followed by opposition response also on tv.

Why can't Britain have both? People seem to think by adopting American style debates we will have to get rid of the pmq. FYI the two don't cancel each other out.
ClassValedictorian 2 years ago
