I love that the libertarian corporate apologists always link to the Reason magazine to cover their corporate overlord's (Occidental Petroleum) lies. Yes, the School Board bought the land for $1, and as Lois stated in this, the state & feds were not honest in the level of contamination readings.
But, Hooker NEVER:
-Fought the School Board in the Courts.
-Admit that other sites would leak due to ground water & water table issues.
-Admit that the metal drums would eventually leak.
Recently a good wife and loving mother of 2 and my youngest sister died of cancer that invaded her entire body, no doubt tied to the chemicals. People are still and always will be affected by this tragedy. I moved away from that area in 1984 . Glad I did. Sad. RIP sis. I miss you.
Lois Gibbs did a lot, however, the School Board covered up the fact that they and the city where the first to compromise the containment of the Canal by Hooker Chemical CO. The City punctured it with sewer and storm drain construction and a highway to the southern end where the most chemical was contained!! Hooker TOLD the school board that it could not be disturbed. Lois Gibbs with all of her good intensions mainly blames Hooker Chem Co. - WRONG.
I remember all this as a young man in the late 70's. Lois makes a good point, we have not made much progress in being pro active for all of the US citizens over the last 30 years
It really is awful how big business and the almighty dollar is forever placed as #1 priority. How those bastards could live with themselves knowing families were living on top of tons of toxic chemicals is beyond me. Did you know Hooker Chemical plant sold the area for $1 right after they buried their toxic waste? So simple. Dump some chemicals. Bury them. Put some soil on top. Seed w/ grass. Green grass grows. Appears fine. Sell for a dollar. DISGRACE.

@TheWinkBoss Hooker advised against it. They fully disclosed what was in the dump site.

What happened to the people at Love Canal was a criminal act on behalf of the government and a terrible tragedy on behalf of the families.
